No Mas Presents: Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No by James Blagden

30 Jul

In celebration of the greatest athletic achievement by a man on a psychedelic journey, No Mas and artist James Blagden proudly present the animated tale of Dock Ellis’ legendary LSD no-hitter. In the past few years we’ve heard all too much about performance enhancing drugs from greenies to tetrahydrogestrinone, and not enough about performance inhibiting drugs. If our evaluation of the records of athletes like Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens, Marion Jones, and Barry Bonds needs to be revised downwards with an asterisk, we submit that that Dock Ellis record deserves a giant exclamation point. Of the 263 no-hitters ever thrown in the Big Leagues, we can only guess how many were aided by steroids, but we can say without question that only one was ever thrown on acid. Sadly, the great Dock Ellis died last December at 63. A year before, radio producers Donnell Alexander and Neille Ilel, had recorded an interview with Ellis in which the former Pirate right hander gave a moment by moment account of June 12, 1970, the day he no-hit the San Diego Padres. Alexander and Ilels original four minute piece appeared March 29, 2008 on NPRs Weekend America. When we stumbled across that piece this past June, Blagden and Isenberg were inspired to create a short animated film around the original audio. www.nomas-nyc.com buy Rufus Thomas (Do The) Push and Pull – Part I and II here: bit.ly

Test Shoot: Brynlee

30 Jul

Test Shoot  (n) by Jake Garn

1.5 to 4 hour shoot just for fun.  I test out new equipment, new models, new ideas… usually with no professional styling. I tell the models to bring a bunch of their own clothes and we improvise. Rarely do I have a single idea pre-planned.   A very good exercise in creativity. I highly, highly recommend doing them as often as you can.

Here is my latest.  Three days ago Brynlee and I shot for just over three hours, it turned out to be one of my favorite test shoots of all time.  (By the way, the drawings in the top two images are Brynlee’s creations)

Equipment used to achieve these images

Classic lighting from both sides, put the softboxes as close as you can to the model and expose accordingly.  For this one I put the left-strobe slightly behind the model and the right-strobe slightly in front of her, the ratio of each strobe is about 1:1.

The Original Onyxia Wipe Animation ============================ This is an animation I made back in April 2006 about an unsuccessful, but yet disturbingly hilarious, attempt to defeat the dragon Onyxia from World of Warcraft. The audio was created by “Dives” from the guild Wipe Club, I had nothing to do with its creation, I only made the animation. Note: This was made pre-BC. That’s right, the level cap was still 60, so you couldn’t solo her back then. PS: Cheers to the guys from “Wipe Club” (link not available) for making the sound clip! ============================ Credits: Orlando Bloom – Pirates of the Caribbean ‘Priest’ comic – Flintlocke’s Guide to Azeroth (pc.gamespy.com Audio – “Dives”, Wipeclub (link not available) ============================ Additional Info: – DKP: Dragon Kill Points: essentially a barter system where you gain points for killing bosses, attending raids, etc and use them to buy items that are dropped by said bosses. – Why is Orlando Bloom the whelp? Because in “Pirates of the Caribbean”, Captain Jack and Barbosa have a conversation in which they refer to Will as a whelp. – The song in the background is “Marco V – Godd”, or so I’ve been told. I can’t confirm this, as I’ve never heard the song myself (except, of course, during the video).
