Taking Their Lumps: 12 Bitter Sweet Abandoned Sugar Mills

14 Sep

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

Obesity epidemic notwithstanding, the world boasts more abandoned sugar mills than you can shake a peppermint stick at.

The former Delta Sugar Company mill in Clarksburg, Yolo County, California was constructed between 1934 and 1936… it took two years because the mill was transported by railroad, piece by piece, from its original location in Utah. By the early 1990s the mill became uneconomical to operate and in 1993 it was closed.

After lying abandoned for over 7 years, the “Old Sugar Mill” began to show some signs of life when some sections were upcycled into a grape-crushing and wine-tasting facility for several local wineries. Kudos to Flickr user Mark Brooks (cal_gecko), who exquisitely photo-documented the complex in late July of 2010.

Falling Like A Domino

The iconic Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn, NYC’s Williamsburg neighborhood was built in 1882 on the site of an even earlier sugar mill that opened in 1856. At one point the plant employed over 4,000 workers and supplied half the sugar consumed in the United States. By the year 2000 when the factory closed, however, only 225 employees still worked there. The Domino Sugar Refinery was sold to developers in early 2014 and the wrecking ball began swinging in October.

Sugar Beaten

The Great Western Sugar Company mill in Longmont, Colorado closed in 1977 and – possibly due to the dearth of wineries in the region – has sat derelict and abandoned for well over thirty years.

The factory opened in 1903 and processed locally-grown sugar beets. Rumor has it the mill is haunted, perhaps by sweet-toothed ghosts. Flickr user Sheila Dee (sheiladeeisme) visited the decrepit factory in January of 2013.

American Paia

Paia, on the island of Maui, Hawaii may be “The World Capitol of Windsurfing” but the town of 2,668 (as of 2010) has another claim to fame: it’s where the once cutting-edge Haiku Sugar Mill processed sugar cane into brown sugar.

Opening in 1861 and powered by a steam engine, the mill only operated for 18 years and has sat abandoned for well over a century. These days its ruins are a popular wedding photography and reception venue. Flickr user Maria Caridad snapped some of the more obscure areas of the abandoned mill on June 28th of 2009.

Sweet Dreams: Nightmare Robots Replace Hotel Employees

11 Aug

[ By Steph in Boutique & Art Hotels & Travel. ]

robot hotel 2

In this edition of ‘Androids Are After Our Jobs,’ a Japanese hotel replaces all of its front desk clerks, porters and other employees with robots, including a hairy nightmare dinosaur wearing a bellboy cap. In fact, should you choose to stay the night here and approach the desk furthest to the right in the lobby, you might question for a moment whether you accidentally ingested some LSD and are mentally recreating a scene from “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”

robot hotel 1

robot hotel fear and loathing

Don’t want to face this guy when you check in? Too bad, because he’s the only one who speaks English. “If you want to check in, push one,” he says, and you type your information into the touch screen and let it snap your photo. The porter robot accompanies you to your room with all of your luggage onboard, and you’re allowed entrance once your identity is verified with facial recognition software. Is that cute little bedside concierge watching you as you sleep, or evaluating your performance in other activities? You’ll never know.

The Henn Na hotel is a real place in Nagasaki, Japan, that aims to slash costs by automating nearly all services with a whole lot of help from technology. Owner Hideo Sawada runs the hotel as part of an amusement park, and says that while the robots may be a tourist draw, they’re not purely gimmicks. Cutting down on staff enables the hotel to rent rooms for as low as $ 80 a night, a rarity in the country.

The technology that makes this actually work is still in progress, so naturally, the robots can’t do nearly as many things as human employees, like calling cabs or giving you directions. You’ll have to figure that stuff out yourself. Mentioned almost as an aside is the creepy fact that the few human employees who are present in the hotel are hidden, watching you silently  through a series of security cameras as you pass through the hallways and common rooms. Please enjoy your stay!

Buzzkill: 10 Sweet Abandoned Apiaries & Busted Beehives

11 May

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned apiaries 1
Honey, I’m not home! These abandoned apiaries and busted beehives once dispensed sweet liquid gold but now lie deserted, de-pollenated and depopulated.

abandoned apiaries 1b

abandoned apiaries 1c

Fancy some honey? The charming red brick building housing The Altamaha Apiaries in Gardi, Georgia dates from 1900 and originally served as a post office / general store. At some point a local family took over the property and set up an apiary. Now gently deteriorating and festooned with flowering vines – descendants of those that once provided fancy pollen, perhaps – The Altamaha Apiaries no longer offers honey but serves instead as a favorite photographic subject for abandonment addicts.

Mutiny On The Botany

abandoned apiaries 2

Abandon a commercial beehive box for 8 days and you might not notice much difference. Abandoning a hive for 8 years is another story, however, and since every picture tells a story (thanks, Rod Stewart), kindly shift your gaze to the vine-encrusted hive above. According to The BeeHolder, this British bee box “had been neglected due to the beekeeper being hospitalised 8 years ago.” Hopefully the cause wasn’t being stung multiple times by his honey-making servants.

In The CatBee Seat

abandoned apiaries 3a

abandoned apiaries 3b

Better not bug this cat, it might start shooting bees out of its mouth. That would presume the ginger feline had been eating bees, mind you, and considering it’s resting in the midst of an abandoned apiary you’re free to draw your own conclusions. Kudos to Flickr user brainfeet, who captured this slightly surreal scene on May 17th of 2010.

OM sweet OM: Olympus OM-D E-M10 review

18 Mar

omd_em10_beauty.jpg

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 is the third incarnation of Olympus’ popular range of high-end mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. The E-M10 boasts some impressive DNA, using the same excellent 16MP Four Thirds sensor as its E-M5 sibling. We’ve been shooting with it extensively over the past few weeks, hoping to find out whether this ‘digital’ OM is as capable as the two that preceded it. Those are two solid acts to follow – how does the OM-D E-M10 perform? Find out in our review

Candy Corn-ucopia! 9 Sick Sweet Seasonal Snack Spinoffs

13 Oct

[ By Steve in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

candy corn flavored foods snacks
Ahh, Candy Corn… we can’t seem to get enough of it or get rid of it fast enough. Take (or give) these 9 pancreas-pulverizing variations on a sugary theme.

Archer Farms Candy Corn Coffee

Archer Farms candy corn coffee(image via: Yankee Candle Sisters)

Did you know that for a limited time only, you can enjoy “the sweet, fun flavor of your favorite Halloween treat” piping hot in your favorite mug as you dig into a plate of breakfast bacon & eggs or a bowl of Kellogg’s Candy Corn Pops, depending on your household? Yes indeed, friends and neighbors, Archer Farms Candy Corn light roast ground coffee adds a jolt of Halloween horror to your morning caffeine rush; it’s what we’d ALL be drinking if coffee was made & marketed by kids. Speaking of which, note the “Save The Children” logo/legend at the bottom of the bag… maybe rugrats really are running the show at Archer Farms.

M&Ms White Chocolate Candy Corn

M&M's White Chocolate Candy Corn(images via: Cre8tive Compass Magazine and Sean Weber’s SnackFixation)

Introduced in October of 2011, M&M’s White Chocolate Candy Corn promises a tantalizing mix of natural and artificial flavors (it says so right on the front of the bag) which begs the question: is the true flavor of candy corn natural or artificial? Maybe M&M’s is just covering all the angles because really, what else can you say about oversized white chocolate drops in orange, yellow and white candy shells?

M&M's White Chocolate Candy Corn(image via: Infinite Hollywood)

A sweet-toothed reviewer from Infinite Hollywood had a few things to say about M&M’s White Chocolate Candy Corn, none of them good. Newton, as he calls himself, soured on the concept before even biting into one – he’s peeved there are too few orange M&M’s in relation to the yellow and white ones. First world problems! Once he did bite the bullet, so to speak, Newton experienced a letdown of Great Pumpkin-esque proportions when he discovered the interiors of M&M’s White Chocolate Candy Corn, regardless of the color of their shells, tasted like run-of-the-mill white chocolate. Gee Newt, you say that like it’s a bad thing.

ACT II Candy Corn Popcorn

ACT II Candy Corn microwave popcorn(images via: X-Entertainment and Half-Assed Productions)

“I don’t see why people are taking the worst tasting Halloween Candy and making it into different products,” fumes Greg Muschong of Half-Assed Productions. A fed-up Muschong goes on to demand of everyone and no one in particular “Please, stop making candy corn products. Enough!!” Disparaging though he may be, Greg still took one for the team by microwaving and reviewing a mini-bag of ACT II Candy Corn Popcorn.

The verdict? According to Greg, “not horrible,” which seems to be the upper limit of praise when it comes to rating candy corn flavored foodstuffs. As Candy Corn Popcorn doesn’t appear in ACT II’s current online microwave popcorn lineup, Greg may have gotten his wish… at least as far as popcorn is concerned.

Sweet Home Chicago

26 Feb

Ein Beitrag von: Christian Hamann

Noch nie habe ich so gefroren und mich gleichzeitig so wohl gefühlt. Wie jedes Jahr bin ich im Winter wieder in Chicago unterwegs. Windy City, Chi-Town, Heart of America, Second Home.

Patina wohin man schaut.
