Video: The crowdsourced winner of MKBHD’s blind smartphone test might surprise you

21 Dec

Popular tech personality Marques Brownlee has published his latest blind smartphone camera test, this one featuring many of the most popular flagship smartphones from 2019, including the iPhone 11 Pro, Google Pixel 4, Galaxy Note 10+, Huawei Mate 30 Pro, and OnePlus 7T Pro.

Each smartphone camera was used to capture a basic profile shot of Brownlee in a natural lighting environment in front of a partly cloudy blue sky. Assessments of the results came from public opinion; millions of Instagram and Twitter users were asked to choose which images they thought had the best quality.

Brownlee reveals the results from these polls in his 2019 blind smartphone camera test video above. The results from the first polling bracket are surprising: the One Plus 7T Pro smartphone, for example, beat the iPhone 11 Pro in the court of public opinion.

Both the Samsung Note 10+ and the Galaxy S10e took the final two bracket slots, with the Note 10+ ultimately crowned the victor.

Surprise! Google hid a custom-built image processor inside the Pixel 2

18 Oct

Google’s Pixel 2 launch event on October 4th put a lot of emphasis on the new smartphone’s camera capabilities. However, the presenters at the event left out one very interesting detail: Google Visual Core.

Visual Core is a custom-built system-on-a-chip (SOC) designed to power and accelerate the Pixel 2 phones’ much-lauded HDR+ function that achieves better dynamic range and reduced noise levels through computational imaging. The new Pixel 2 phones already come with the chip built in, but it has not been activated yet. It appears Google ran out of time before the Pixel 2 launch to fully optimize Visual Core implementation in the device.

The good news is it will be activated at some point “over the coming months”, which should make HDR+ processing on the new devices even quicker and smoother than it already is (and it’s already far faster than on the original Pixels). According to Google, it will then be 5x faster and use less than 1/10th of the the energy,” a real advantage over the current general purpose processing. In the future the chip could also take over additional image processing tasks.

The company will also enable Pixel Visual Core as a developer option in its Oreo 8.1 preview, allowing access to HDR+ for the developers of third-party camera apps. All of this is currently limited to Google’s Pixel 2 devices, but there’s hope other manufacturer will pick up the Visual Core technology and associated software in the future.

flat pack wedding ring design

As soon as someone pulls out a ring box the (wedding bell) alarms start sounding, hence this ingeniously slim alternative that packs flat into pockets and still doesn’t reveal its purpose once presented to a significant other.

From its creators: “Clifton is a unique engagement ring case that can be easily slipped into the pocket or the wallet. The discreet design allows the case to be easily hidden without showing much profile. At approximately 1 cm thick, Clifton presents the ring with a delightful flower blooming effect when opened, enchanting the moment.”

While there are many other ways to surprise someone on this kind of special occasion, this approach seems particularly elegant as a solution. Its creator, Andrew Zo, is a packaging designer who delights in the unboxing process and has won awards and acclaim for this and other work done for both domestic (Canadian) clients and international businesses.

Nikon 18-55mm VR Review: An Under-estimated Lens That May Surprise You

21 Dec

www.artoftheimage.com – The Nikon 18-55mm VR (as well as the non-VR version) is a lens that many over-look due to it’s low price and designation as a kit lens, but this lens is severely under-estimated and may surprise you.

It’s a Fujifilm S2950 HD video test. I tried to zoom as much as I can. Other sounds are a little bit annoying but hope you enjoy. I think this camera has pretty good video skills. Check out my Flicker account for some examples of macro and scenery. www.flickr.com And a little recommendation for the ones want to buy this camera, you shouldn’t buy this camera for auto mode you should use manual because machine doesn’t thinks in the way of a photographer’s thinks. You can get good photos with the good settings.

National Geographic photographer’s surprise encounter with deadly predator

19 Oct

Leopard_Seal.jpg

National Geographic photographers can find themselves in unusual, extreme and potentially dangerous situations, trying to capture the ‘never before seen’ images the magazine is famous for. However, contributing photographer Paul Nicklen’s story of his close encounter with a huge Leopard Seal (one of the top predators in the Antarctic), shows there’s still opportunity for surprises in the job.
