Nikon 18-55mm VR Review: An Under-estimated Lens That May Surprise You

21 Dec

www.artoftheimage.com – The Nikon 18-55mm VR (as well as the non-VR version) is a lens that many over-look due to it’s low price and designation as a kit lens, but this lens is severely under-estimated and may surprise you.

It’s a Fujifilm S2950 HD video test. I tried to zoom as much as I can. Other sounds are a little bit annoying but hope you enjoy. I think this camera has pretty good video skills. Check out my Flicker account for some examples of macro and scenery. www.flickr.com And a little recommendation for the ones want to buy this camera, you shouldn’t buy this camera for auto mode you should use manual because machine doesn’t thinks in the way of a photographer’s thinks. You can get good photos with the good settings.

No you can’t. 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 means that at 18mm your max aperture is 3.5, and at 55mm your max aperture is 5.6. So with a kit lens, at 50mm, you simply cannot go to 1.8 or even 3.5 because the limit itself. What you said ‘you can go on any aperture’ means that you can go into higher f number at any focal length, ex: 18mm you can get f/8 or f/11, or even 55m f/8 f/11 f/20.

Actually, it’s Boke** if it’s the Japanese spelling. Bokeh is the more Americanized spelling so people say it phonetically correct.
O’s are pronounced long in Japanese, and E’s are pronounced ā
Thus you get. . . Bo keh (Your phonetic version)
    . . . That is all.

Awesome video! It really helped me out. I am looking for a lens for my father based on his descriptions. Do you have any recommendations for a macro zoom lens? I have not been able to find this. Does such a lens exist?

Hi there, have you heard about “Photo SFXart Tricks” (just do a Google search for it…)? On their website you will find a smart free video showing the right way to shoot fantastic pictures. This made it easier for Matt to shoot photographs that leave you with that wow-effect when you take a look at them. Hopefully it will help you also…

i was wondering that if i get a nikon 18-55 f3.5-f5.6 kit lens, will i still be able to go lower or higher than the lens provided by the lens (in this case 3.5-5.6)? if so, then what does the 3.5 – 5.6 f mean, i mean if u can go on any aperture with any lens, then what does the aperture limit written on the lens mean? and also, if i can go to any aperture with a kit lens, why would i need a f1.8 prime lens? wouldnt i get the same result by setting my kit lens to 50mm and f1.8? pls explain

The main pro for a 50mm f1.8 lens is its wide aperture and low price around $200. f1.8 will allow you to shoot in low light situations and it’s a wonderful portrait lens which will allow you to blur backgrounds.

Just bought one with VR on ebay for $104, including shipping. It was new and taken from a D5100 kit. The 18-105 that came with my D7000 went rolling off the table on a second-floor balcony at a resort in the Philippines and ended up on the stone pathway below. I liked it, and obviously the internal focusing is nice, but I figured if I was going to replace it with the same thing I might as well do an 18-200 or the new 18-300. As an f8 AF walking-around lens in sunny Florida, this should be fine.

How close does it focus? like how close can you put the camera to something and get a sharp picture?

Had my D7000 for a year and a half now and it turns out that I have all the lenses matt recomended. The 18-105mm kit, 35 mm prime, 50mm prime and the 55-300mm VR. All I need even though I just got the Sigma 8-16mm ultra wide for landscapes. I tend to prefer the primes when I can because to my eyes they are so sharp.

Well, this lens is a peace of crap, it came with my camera, i used it till I bought the 50mm E-series Nikon lens. Now it`s in a bag full of unused stuff. E series old, cheap to buy second hand, but good, glass and metal.

I love my D3100 and this is the kit that came with it. Good multipurpose lens. As this is my first dslr it may be a while before the limitations of this lens has me adding another to my camera bag.
