Shop in a Swimming Pool: Neglected Space Turned into a Store

13 Dec

[ By Steph in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

swimming pool store aoyama 1

Until recently, this indoor swimming pool on the vacant ground floor of a 1970s apartment building in Tokyo was just an empty space, dry and disused for years. Now it’s a pop-up shop by Nobuo Araki known as ‘The Pool Aoyama‘ hawking clothing, accessories and swim-themed promotional items. The designers left the pool almost entirely intact, installing a glass floor that mimics the look of water.

The shell of the abandoned pool and its steel ladder have become key elements of the final design, with the pool walls defining the space of the shop. Wooden stairs on either side of the pool meet to create a sort of bridge across the glass. White shelving units are mounted along the edges to display goods, and U-shaped stainless steel clothing racks hanging from the ceiling echo the look of pool hand rails.

The designers were drawn to the soft light, charm and quirkiness of the space, and the shallow depth of the pool lends itself well for adaptation into a showroom. A newly installed glass ceiling floods the room with natural light, and the bathrooms were turned into fitting rooms.

Entering the shop feels a bit like gaining access to a secret underground space that few are savvy to, as the door is simply marked with an inconspicuous sign reading ‘The Pool.’

1 November, 2013 – Kevin and Michael’s Toy Shop

31 Oct

A few months ago Michael, Kevin and Chris were part of the instructor team on a Phase One PODAS workshop in the Kimberley Region of Austrailia.  The trip took place on the True North, an amazing expedition ship with an onboard helicopter that allowed us to explore some incredible locations.  While on the cruise we did a number of video interviews as well as a video on the whole trip.  Watch for all of these soon.  In the mean time enjoy a video with Michael and Kevin discussing the gear they brought on the trip. Priceless: Banksy Shop in NYC Sells Art to Clueless Public

15 Oct

Banksy New York City Sale 1

A few lucky people had no idea what they were actually purchasing when they bought black-and-white graffiti works on canvas from a street stall in Central Park for sixty bucks a pop. Those works of art are worth thousands of dollars each – because they’re Banksy originals. The elusive street artist held an unannounced sale in New York City on the thirteenth day of his ‘Better Out Than In‘ residency, and most people failed to notice the incredible bargain right under their noses. But don’t bother coming back tomorrow: this was one a one-day-only sale, and you (and everyone else) just missed it.

Banksy New York City Sale 2

That’s not only because the stall was manned by a bored-looking old man who sat around for four hours before making a sale. Banksy knock-offs can be found all over the place, and these canvases hardly stood out as anything different. But they’re signed, original, 100% authentic works of art worth as much as $ 30,000 a piece.

Banksy New York City Sale 3

One guy, purchasing art for his Chicago apartment, walked away with four – we bet he’s happy about that decision today, if he even realizes what he has are originals (in which case one has to wonder why he did not buy more). Murals by the artist, removed from the urban settings in which they were painted, routinely fetch as much as half a million each, with one even netting $ 1.1 million.

Banksy New York City Sale 4

The clueless public who passed on these original Banksy canvases won’t get another chance – it was a one-time deal. Banksy will be in town for the rest of the month, adding to the stencils, installations and mixed media pieces he’s already put up during his time in the city. Those works include two mobile pieces, like a delivery truck converted into a garden, complete with a waterfall.

Modular Bright Idea: Colorful São Paulo Sidewalk Tea Shop

colorful storefront

A blend of fun, flexible, efficient and honest, The Gourmet Tea shop design in Brazil’s biggest city is both regional and universal, responding to everyday needs for opening and closing while also attractive to passerby pedestrians.

colorful modular street vendor

Designed by Alan Chu (images by Djan Chu), the storefront is a patchwork of brightly-colored squares and reflects the brand and its rich variety (35 flavors) of organic teas to be found within.

But the patches are more than decorative – they unfold in various ways to reveal everything from the store’s signage to its purchasing counter and shelves full of wares.

Despite its apparent complexity, it is ultimately built of inexpensive plywood and folds down into a space-saving box in a few simple steps, making it a cost-effective solution for street-side vending.

Waste Not: 1890s Urinal Turned into a Sandwich Shop

20 Mar

[ By Steph in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

Attendant Urinal Restaurant 2

Sit at a counter embedded into a wall of urinals and enjoy a nice sandwich at Attendant, an eatery in London built in a former men’s bathroom. While it’s virtually unrecognizable after an extensive $ 150,000 renovation, it’s hard to imagine how the owners were able to look into the trash-strewn pit of a subterranean restroom and think about food.

The Attendant restroom had been abandoned for more than fifty years before its two-year transformation. It now serves sandwiches, soup, breakfast, cakes and espresso drinks, with many ingredients plucked from the New Covent Garden Marketplace just down the street.

Partners Peter Tomlinson and Ben Russell removed 12 layers of paint dating back over a century from the ornate wrought iron entrance and removed a wall that separated the urinals from the attendant’s space. The urinals were polished, a counter was added and a kitchen was built. Green seating matches the original Victorian floor tiles.

Pat puzzling in the kitchen – Creative, Build-it Slideshow Tutorial using Paint Shop Pro by mimitalks, married w/children
visual art
kind of how this is achieved – slideshow made using the capabilities of Pinnacle Studio 12,
all visuals made using the capabilities of Paint Shop Pro 6 (my fav version so far, too bad they don’t make it anymore!). I would think any digital imaging program could be used to achieve this.

Check out the first comment for the settings close up and personal and still!

Like all tutorials, take what you understand and can deal with and play around with the rest.
There is never an absolute way to achieve anything here on earth. The joy is in the challenge
for moi.

Phantom Limb [Thomason]
visual art
Meta-art Thomasons are usually what one might call "achitectural je m’en fous"––architectural elements that once had, but lost its meaning due to neglect or oversight. So these severed tree branches and trunks entangled in fences, wires, and other artificial structures––being primarily a natural phenomenon––don’t quite fit the definition of a Thomason. But because of their visual peculiarity in the urban landscape, are one of the favorite type of Thomasons collected 🙂

What is a Thomason?

Corel Paint Shop Pro x3 FREE DOWNLOAD Photo Editing Application , Like Photoshop

05 Nov

bit.ly Click link to start your FREE DOWNLOAD What you get with the latest version of PaintShop Pro is a midlevel photo editor with a low learning curve and some very nice editing and output features. The easily navigable interface puts photos front and center and surrounds them with tools and menus. It doesn’t have all the pixel-pushing prowess of its pricier competitors, but PaintShop Pro X3 does add a few significant enhancements and new features. Support for HD video projects is the biggie here, as more users are investing in fancier digital cameras and in high-def computers and TV screens. Shutterbugs will also appreciate the new RAW feature (called the RAW Lab), which is a specialized editor for processing RAW images. It’s a feature similar to those found in Adobe’s Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Lightroom. Corel has also acknowledged an uptick in the popularity of social networks by baking in more sharing options, specifically for Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube. In addition to sprinkling some new editing tools into PaintShop Photo Pro X3, Corel has turned on the capability to import and export HD videos. The multimedia photo editor contains templates for photo projects found in other Corel products, like Corel Digital Studio 2010. Though the templates offer simple, visually exciting ways to get started on a photo book or a slide show, those who dip into them often will find themselves limited to the same handful of designs. It’s clear that PaintShop Pro X3 is
