Jenga-Like Hotel Made of Stacked Shipping Containers

24 Apr

Hive Inn Shipping Container Hotel 1

Shipping containers plastered in stark graphic branding are stacked in a Jenga-like configuration within a steel frame at the Hive-Inn, a concept hotel by OVA Studio. Individual units can easily be moved in and out for a constantly-changing design, with one-of-a-kind hotel suites traveling from one place to another.

Each container gets a unique interior design created by a brand, whether a luxury fashion house like Louis Vuitton, a tech company like Samsung or a celebrity like Lady Gaga. The advertiser’s branding is also painted on the exterior, creating an experience that immerses the occupants in the sponsor’s chosen visuals.

While some people aren’t crazy about feeling like ads are being force-fed to them, it’s not hard to imagine die-hard fans of companies like, say, Ferrari, jumping at the chance to stay in one of these rooms.

OVA envisions the containers being leased to individuals or companies who need temporary space, used not just as hotel rooms but also offices or retail stores. The containers plug into a grid system with a service core and slots for small terraces.

Submarine Suite: Private Luxury in Submersible Yacht Hotel

luxury underwater hotel

Nemo and his companions on the Nautilus would find themselves quite at home in this self-contained underwater retreat, complete with wraparound views and dupped Lovers Deep.

luxury above the water

A project of Oliver’s Travels, the vessel can help the rich and famous sneak away from prying eyes, submerging itself then depositing its passengers on a remote romantic island, or simply treating its hidden guests to secret seafood dinners under the sea.

The interior features a full kitchen, bar and living spaces with long horizontal windows to take in the scenery and wildlife. Chefs and concierges, located on the upper level but available on demand, can be provided as well to help customize the experience.

However, unless you, like the eccentric protagonist of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, can offset the cost of your voyage via hidden stashes of wealth, you may have a hard time paying the $ 100,000+ per-night price tag this vessel demands.

Hanging Hotel: Camp in a Trunk-Friendly Tree House Retreat

08 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Boutique & Art Hotels & Global. ]

tree house in context

Without harming the forest that supports it, this streamlined tree house design is stabilized by a central trunk but ultimately suspended from the branches above to minimize negative environmental impacts.

tree house shade structure

Tree houses typically rely on being either attached to trunks or translating their loads to grounded supports – in short: they either harm trees or are not truly ‘treehouses’. Farrow Partnership Architects proposes a middle path, relying on the tree without constricting its growth.

And while the structures are open-air for a camping-style experience, they are not lacking in luxuries (at least in terms of what one normally expects from architecture in trees: bedroom, bathroom and living room spaces complete with composting toilet and graywater shower.

tree house wood structure

tree house night module

The streamlined bent-wood structures are designed to be oriented around site-specific views, hung with thin metal wires and covered in semi-translucent material to provide a degree of shade and privacy while letting in natural light during the day (and becoming a kind of glowing lantern at night).

This series of sky villas is set to be deployed in a national park near Toronto, Canada. Plans call for them to be sufficiently spaced out so that residents of one structure will not see the other, but simply the forest through the trees.

Mobile Hotel: Converted Double-Decker Bus B&B Still Drives

24 Jan

bus hotel with tractor

Quintessentially British, this boutique suite sleeps six, features a wood-burning stove and much more, but perhaps most amazing of all: the vehicle remains road-worthy, despite its conversion to a sweet retreat.

bus boutique road worthy

The Big Green Bus was originally part of the west midlands metro transit system and purchased by its new owner (and renovator) Adam Collier-Woods for approximately $ 7,500 at auction on eBay.

The still-working bus, driven back into the countryside by its buyer (and moved around on demand), required more than $ 15,000 to be turned into a unique three-bedroom accommodation, including a functioning kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Currently set on a “glamping site in the heart of the Sussex countryside,” the bus has its own decking area, a fire pit and all this next to a beautiful pond.” The rural property can accommodate extra campers for parties larger than six who wish to enjoy a stay. In addition to pantry essentials (tea, coffee, milk, herbs and olive oil), logs for the fire pit or stove are available on request.

More from its maker and operator about its present location: “A gorgeous 15 minute walk away through country lanes to Chiddingly is the Six Bells pub, a classic traditional country pub, luring all sorts of music, poetry and arts lovers to its various festivals. Brighton is close by too with all its various charms, is 25 minutes drive down the road, or leave your car at Glynde and take the train. Lewes has more trains per hour, Make sure you get to the Lewes Farmers Market on the first Saturday morning of every month.”

Sleep with the Fishes: Floating Underwater Hotel Room

26 Nov

[ By Steph in Global & Travel & Places. ]

Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 1

Watch eerily illuminated sea creatures swim past your windows at night as you fall asleep on your own ‘private floating island,’ an underwater hotel room at the Manta Resort. This special getaway is a two-story floating wooden structure with a submerged bedroom, a surface-level deck that lets you dive into the sea, and a rooftop lounge area.

Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 2

Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 5

Located off the eastern coast of Africa near Pemba Island, the artificial floating island has virtually everything you’d want from a resort – as long as you’re okay with near-total seclusion. That means no other guests, but also no waiters or other attendees. You might be okay with that, given the scenery – but no worries, you can always take a boat back to the main resort to enjoy the restaurant and spa.

Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 4

Designed by Swedish firm Genberg Underwater Hotels, the three-story structure is envisioned as a private getaway for a couple. It’s anchored to the sea floor from its four corners so it won’t float away, bobbing gently on the sea. Guests can enjoy views of all sorts of marine life, and coral reefs. After dark they’re still visible thanks to underwater spotlights beneath each window.

POD in Singapore: High-Class Hostel Meets Capsule Hotel

11 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Boutique & Art Hotels & Global. ]

pod hotel bedroom capsules

Full of small surprises, this minimalist modern urban retreat blends elements of a free-for-all hostel of bunk beds for college backpackers and high-end hotels catering to business executives.

pod capsule bedroom details

At The POD in Singapore, designed by Formwerkz, guests stay in variously-sized capsules reminiscent of radical pod hotels in places like Tokyo or Hong Kong, but with warm materials (primarily wood and stone), soft lighting and tactile finishes one might expect from a traditional suite in Kyoto or Beijing.

pod hostel room types

pod hotel interior design

The bedrooms are semi-private affairs – slots in the walls you can slip into with a curtain you can pull down for privacy, but no actual door or solid space divider. A private desk folds down from the wall and private reading light lets you set your own hours for sleeping at night.

pod hotel amenities various

For security, separate cubby lockers below beds and shoe lockers in the main space let you keep valuables out of reach. Common areas provide both lounge and meeting spaces as well as private office pods for getting work or calls down out of sight.

pod space common rooms

pod hotel bathroom

The washrooms with basin sinks and broad mirrors are open and shared, but the bathroom stalls inside of them (including a smaller sink, shower, toilet and mirror) are closed and private, resulting in a blend of semi-public yet also personal restrooms .
