Instagram is rolling out photo and video advertisements in Explore tab

28 Jun

Instagram rolled out its redesigned Explore tab in May, introducing topic shortcuts, direct access to IGTV, and more. In an update today, the company has revealed another addition to Explore: advertisements. Instagram users will begin seeing sponsored posts in the app’s Explore tab over the ‘next few months,’ the company announced this week.

According to Instagram, more than half of the accounts on its platform use the Explore tab every month to discover new content and 80% of accounts follow at least one business in the app. The company plans to bring these two realities together by introducing sponsored posts in Explore.

When an advertisement is encountered, users will see a direct link to purchase items from the company that paid for the ad, as well as a ‘Sponsored’ label below the brand’s name. Instagram presents the new addition as a way for advertisers ‘to be part of what’s culturally relevant and trending while reaching new audiences who are looking to discover something new.’

It’s unclear how many users currently see the advertisements, which Instagram says it plans to introduce ‘slowly and thoughtfully in the coming months.’ Users will simply start to see ads at some point over the next few months ‘as part of their browsing experience,’ the company said this week.

It’s unclear how often users can expect to see advertisements in Explore once they are fully deployed on the platform. The first advertisements will arrive today and direct users to Instagram’s own IGTV, The Verge reports. In the future, ads will include both images and videos. This marks an expansion of advertisements on the platform, where they can already be found in Stories and the regular user feed.

Sans Ads: See Tokyo Scrubbed Clean of Signs & Advertisements

tokyo ad free art

Tokyo seems inseparable from the banners, billboards, logos, slogans and other flashy neon alerts, except when seen through the lens of this French graphic designer in a startling black-and-white image series turned into a alternating GIFs.

Tokyo No Ads by Nicolas Damiens illustrates just how shocking the contrast is, particularly when switching back and forth between before and after versions. Each of the seven scenes here was meticulously edited with attention to every last pixel of graphics.

To outsiders, Japan’s capital is nearly synonymous with signage saturation, so stripping them away changes the character of the place dramatically. Promoting everything from TV shows and movies to local shops and businesses, it is almost impossible to find a place in the city not showered in advertising. Perhaps the biggest surprise: the landscape almost looks more alien without its characteristic adverts.

The Power of Paint: Mini Spruce-Ups Act as Advertisements

OBI Billboard Creative Advertising 1

Billboard-sized paint jobs on buildings that have seen better days give passersby a glimpse of how much fresher and brighter the structure could look with a little care – the ideal advertisement for paint company OBI. They may be promoting a product, but these miniature renovations get their message across by proving what the product can do rather than just plastering photos of it on ugly billboards.

OBI Billboards Creative Advertising 3

The campaign by Hamburg-based agency Jung Von Matt came about as a result of price wars between independent stores in Germany, causing a sudden increase in unsightly billboards all over the country. OBI, the largest DIY store in Germany, asked “Why do people advertise products that are supposed to make our homes look nicer using adverts that make everything look uglier?”

It’s a refreshing twist on the usual public advertisement, using the old show-don’t-tell method. In some cases, just half a window is included in the re-paint, making it glaringly obvious how much newer and more cheerful the building would look if the whole thing received the same treatment.

These days, as we collectively develop blinders that make conventional ads in public spaces virtually invisible, marketers have to get a lot more creative to be noticed. Check out 300+ shocking, brilliant and unmissable ad campaigns that force us to sit up and pay attention.

Useful Billboards? Advertisements Extend Into Urban Space

08 Jun

smart ideas for smarter cities awning billboard

At its best, advertising is entertaining, even useful. At its worst, it is invasive, abrasive, and perhaps even offensive. IBM’s new campaign from Ogilvy France skirts the line, featuring public objects that are useful but which somewhat invade the urban space.

The Smart Ideas for Smarter Cities campaign includes three billboards that extend out from city walls and into the urban environment. One is an awning of sorts, providing a dry space for residents to get out of the rain or a bit of shade to get out of the sun.

Another is a small bench which gives weary pedestrians the chance to sit down for a moment. The last is a ramp that covers a portion of a small staircase, letting cyclists or luggage-wheeling residents take an easier route.

The campaign is meant to inspire viewers to think differently about their cities and how some elements could be tweaked to be more useful for residents. It’s something of a risk, however, since this invasion of the urban environment may not be welcomed by residents who think that advertising is already too ubiquitous on city streets.
