31 July, 2013 – The Digital Print – a review and video interview

31 Jul

Our friend and colleague Jeff Schewe has written a new book titled The Digital Print. It has just been published and is available as of today from leading book sellers.

We now have a review of the book online. The page also includes a ten minute long streaming video interview with Jeff conducted by Kevin Raber.

"Having been to Antarctica with Michael and Kevin, I would say after having traveled the world and shot nearly my entire life as an exhibiting photographer,  it was one of my highlights in my life and I talk about it, all the time.  The images and experience of seeing something visionary and nearly extinct from the world, to see and experience the wildlife and scenery that does not fear humans is amazing.  The images I shot there won me two Smithsonian awards and nearly 18 other international awards". – Tim Wolcott

Leisure Dives: Planking Meets Parkour & Midair Photography

leisure dive suit drink

Parkour and free-running are fine for athletic types, while planking and the lying-down game are great for lazies, but suspended somewhere in between we find the leisure dive.

leisure dives with cocktails

Blending the action-packed art of diving and cavalier nonchalance of sipping a cocktail, the actual site (Leisure Dive) started as a Facebook phenomena with a few pictures and spiraled out of control from there.

leisure dive newspaper jump

Variants include: hopping off a bike in mid-jump, or holding something other than a drink. Other details aside, though, appearance is critical – the less you look like someone prepared to splash into a pool (or other body of water, or hard-packed dirt) a few moments after your photograph is snapped, the more convincing the effect.

leisure dives various photos

For those wishing to get in on the game, the instructions are as follows: (1) Grab some friends, a decent camera, and head somewhere chill near a body of water. A swimming pool works. A lake will do. A river? You crazy. (2) Put on a bathing suit. Or a linen suit. Or a koala suit. Anything leisurely. (3) Grab something that says you are just a chilled out individual. A piña colada. A pitching wedge. A harpsichord. Whatever. We all unwind differently. (4) Find a nice perch from which to jump. Make sure you have a leisurely backdrop and a safe landing. (5)Now jump in, and embrace the leisure. Tip your glass. Pop your elbow. And most importantly, look at the camera with a face that says, “Does this suit make me look awesome?” The answer is yes. And, SNAP.

Big Sur Stars

Big Sur Stars

Earlier this year I had quite the late night adventure driving the Big Sur coastline and photographing the stars on a moonless night.  I had some time to enjoy the vastness of the night sky as I was shooting a time-lapse. While laying there in the dark, the combination of hearing crashing waves and watching the stars provided an interesting juxtaposition. Visually I could get lost scanning the stars, but the ocean seemed to keep me anchored so as to not completely escape into the ether. While I’ve photographed the Milky Way atop tall mountains, volcanos and the desert photographing it on the coast has been the most surreal simply because the role the ocean plays breaking the silence.

CTRL+Console: One Cool Video & Photo Editing App

CTRL+Console - Video and Photo Editing App

CTRL+Console – Video and Photo Editing App

I have become a huge fan of Kickstarter and every so often you find a real gem of a project. Sometime ago I stumbled on to the CTRL+Console app (download link) and loved the idea. If you’re unfamiliar with the project check out CTRL+Console Kickstarter page, but note it is no longer active. In short the app acts as a GUI to a variety of shortcuts in Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Quicktime and soon for Lightroom.

CTRL+Console – Adobe Premiere Pro Editor

While a lot of Kickstarter projects feel or look like a do it yourself project this one is quite polished. The app was released yesterday on the Apple iTunes store and is now public. It is free to download with the Quicktime console being accessible out of the gate, but you’ll need to purchase/unlock additional editors with in the app. For the app to communicate with the programs on your computer you do need to download a program, but it’s of minimal effort to set up. Overall I think its a great concept and has been extremely well executed. To ground expectations though it did just come out and there are a couple of bugs for Windows users I hear, but they’re being tackled quickly.

One of the nicer touches that was included in the app for those that took part in funding the project was this very nice Thank You page in the app. Much to my surprise I actually found my name listed pretty quickly. A nice touch by Jeff Chow who made the app!

Life As We Know It

Springtime flower buds on nearly bare branches

These days it is pretty easy to lose myself in the stars with so many great images coming from NASA, the International Space Agency and others. It’s tough to resist day dreaming about what’s in the heavens and as a result become jaded with what is before us every day. While amazed by the constant flow of space photos it’s grounding to take a walk and appreciate what makes our oasis in the stars so special. This photo of springtime blossoms is a perfect example of the beauty and colorful universe right under our nose.

Lake Tahoe Blue

31 Jul
Lake Tahoe Blue

Blue waters of Lake Tahoe, California on a cool winter day

Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in California and North America, is also the second deepest behind Crater Lake in Oregon. The depth of the water is what provides its iconic deep blue color.  Adding to the beauty of the lake is its crown of peaks surrounding it. Personally I find Lake Tahoe to be even more beautiful with snow on the ground.

Lake Tahoe and Crater Lake are both amazing locations simply because the blue color of the lake is insanely intense. The bluer the sky the bluer the water. It’s an amazing thing to witness and a fascinating phenomenon tied to such incredibly deep alpine lakes.

SmugMug launches totally redesigned website

New-SmugMug-Gallery-Style---SmugMug.jpg

Photo sharing site SmugMug has rolled out a totally redesigned website, which was ‘rebuilt from the ground up’. The look-and-feel of the site is radically different, and somewhat resembles the recently redesigned Flickr. Some of the new features on SmugMug include a large selection of default templates for the consumer, plus the ability for pros to create their own custom designs. Organizing photos has been much improved as well, with a new drag-and-drop interface.  Follow the link to see what the new SmugMug looks like.

Photography campaigners close to saving Fox Talbot archive

31 Jul

Tiger.web.jpg

A campaign launched by Oxford University’s Bodleian Libraries to acquire a valuable archive of images by photography pioneer Fox Talbot has been thrown a £200,000 lifeline. Campaigners want to ‘save’ the archive of images, which has been transferred to a New York dealer with an eye to selling it on the open market. If the campaign is successful, the historic collection will remain in the UK. The massive £200,000 (~$ 300K) donation takes the campaign to within £375,000 of its target of £2.25 million. Click through for more details.
