Frio v2.0

29 Jun

Just a quick heads-up that the frio double-locking cold shoe, which I consider to be the safest way to mount your speedlight to your swivel adapter, just got an upgrade: the female socket on the bottom (shown here) is now ¼” to 3/8″ adaptable. This should make some of you Euro folks happy, as 3/8″ is more of a standard there. They are shipping now.

Also, they have those little double-male posts you need if you are gonna swap out your Justin Clamp cold shoes to frios (or any other shoe.)

50mm Focal Length: Weekly Photography Challenge

29 Jun

7We’ve written many times about why we like 50mm lenses here on dPS (for example here, here and here) and every time we do we get a heap of readers telling us that they love them too.

So this week your photographic challenge is to take and share an image taken with a 50mmm lens (or if you don’t have one – taken at around the 50mm mark on your zoom lens).

Feel free to take any kind of photo – just make sure you’re shooting at 50mm!

Once you’ve taken your 50mm photo upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPS50mm to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Low Light challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

29 Jun

splash_trigger.jpg

Triggertrap’s new flash adapter activates any hot shoe-equipped flash from an iPhone using a specialized mobile dongleflash adapter and iOS app – ideal for freezing high-speed action using your off-camera flash. If you’re trying to catch a bullet mid-flight, it is very difficult if the flash is connected to your camera, but Triggertrap’s sound-activated system makes it a little easier. Learn more about how it works on connect.dpreview.com.

SunTimes/DarkTimes blog highlights effect of Chicago Sun-Times layoffs

29 Jun

A new Tumblr blog, SunTimes/DarkTimes is documenting the effects of the recent layoffs at the photo department of the Chicago Sun-Times. The blog is posting comparisons highlighting the difference between photo coverage in the Sun-Times to that of the Chicago Tribune. The results certainly seem to reinforce the views of many commentators who warned that the Sun-Times’ photo coverage would suffer as a result of the cost-cutting. Click through for some images and a link to the SunTimes/DarkTimes Tumblr.

Carl Zeiss drops ‘Carl’, becomes ‘ZEISS’

28 Jun

shared:Zeiss_logo.png

We’ve all been there – your friend Carl is over by the fridge, getting some ice, and there you are with an expensive new Carl Zeiss lens, and you’re describing it to someone, and Carl keeps saying ‘What? What did you say? Do you want ice?’ It’s confusing. No wonder then that German lens manufacturer Carl Zeiss has decided to officially drop the ‘Carl’ and will henceforth be known simply as ZEISS. According to the manufacturer’s blog, the decision was taken to ‘create consistency’ across its brand communications. Click through for more details (and no more terrible Carl puns, we promise).

Captive Imagination: Terrifying DIY Prison Tattoo Machines

28 Jun

Prison Tattoo Machines

When famed tattoo artist Scott Campbell visited a prison in Mexico to ink people held inside, he didn’t bring a tattoo machine – he made his own, the same way the inmates would, using the materials that can be found within the prison walls. The artist then immortalized these DIY creations in a series of realistic black-and-white watercolor paintings called ‘Things Get Better.’

Prison Tattoo Machines 3

The title refers to the ‘things’ that the guns are made of: hair picks, plastic utensils, telephone cords, batteries and ballpoint pens. Campbell spent two months visiting the prison, where he worked with the inmates and tattooed them. Since he wasn’t allowed to bring tattoo equipment inside, he had to use what was available. He donated “a few VCRs and a beaten old guitar” to the prison rec room to help the process along. The motors from the VCRs and the guitar strings, which were then used as needles, proved extremely useful for his creations. The needles were sharpened on the grout between tiles.

“I like the idea that inspiration can come from limitations,” Campbell told Life and Times. “There’s a general notion that inspiration is a sort of expansion of awareness or broadening of creative range. This work is inspired by parameters. The openness of a blank canvas and the infiniteness of the possibilities that canvas may contain can be paralyzing.”

Prison Tattoo Machines 4

“When I have limitations –a confined range of materials –and a specific task to fulfill, it creates a little world that I can get lost in and walls to push against. These paintings are created within parameters that we can imagine ourselves in and, in that way, are relatable. The watercolors are humble and sweet in their simplicity.”
