Jason, thanks – I appreciate videos where someone actually gives a lot of good info about the topic being discussed without being repetitive or doing things that waste time, and your video was really great in this regard.

I’m starting astrophotography and I was considering getting a teleconverter to make some of the smaller objects larger so I don’t have to crop as much. It would all be compatible with the telescope and I’d be taking multiple long exposures at low ISO. Also I’m using a D800.
Can you see any problems with that?

I use the 300.mm lens first shown and didn’t know that a converter would not work, thanks for the advise as I think a new lens is on the shopping list.. Though the 300 is great

The best choice would be the TC-14EII.

Very good explanation – I noticed on Nikons web site they have a list of compatible lenses for their teleconverters and this explains why to me.

What about “Plan C = Crop”? The discussion of teleconverters (Plan A) vs. very long lenses (Plan B) often overlooks Plan C: Crop. If you have in mind to put your image on a poster (or billboard!) you may need all the pixels you’ve got, but if you’re heading for 4×6 or even 8×10, then a fraction of your sensor’s pixels may be plenty. (Example: 300 dpi x 6″ = 1800 dpi, cf. 5600 pixels on Canon 5D Mark II’s long axis), so 1/9 of the sensor area might produce an excellent 4×6 print. Reactions?

Very helpful. I’ve considered purchasing a teleconverter for some time. You’ve confirmed some of the concerns that I had. This was educational. Thanks.

the largest lens is the 70-200 f/2.8 AFS G VRII Nikkor. There are no limitations with F-mount Nikon bodies and TC’s, the issue is simply lens compatibility.

Is the lens on the right a 70-200? Would the teleconverters all work with a D7000 or do you have limitations with cameras? Thanks for a great video. Miss the podcast!!!
