Prairie Wind 16K HDR video was created using two Canon EOS 5DS cameras

Cinematographer Martin Lisius has detailed the creation of a 16K 15,985 x 5792 pixels HDR video titled “Prairie Wind.” The video was published on Vimeo, though the online version of the video is limited to 8K. According to Lisius, the project involved two Canon EOS 5DS cameras with Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art lenses and a custom-built calibrated mount.

“Prairie Wind” showcases weather over America’s Great Plains, according Lisius, who explains in the video description, “I’m fortunate to have grown up on the Great Plains of America where I can touch the sky often. A storm there can transform you … Finding new ways to convey this experience to others is important to me.”

The project involved four months of shooting footage across six Great Plains states and another three months of processing. Lisius estimates “Prairie Wind” contains around 6,100 16K images that were stitched using an 8-core Mac Pro workstation. “Making this short film taught me Jedi-like patience,” Lisius said.

Full details on the creation process can be found in the video’s description on Vimeo. Samples of the full 16K resolution are available to download for free through file-sharing site WeTransfer and licensing is available through Storm Stock.

Shaolin Flying Monks Temple: Wind Tunnel Facilitates Midair Kung Fu Fighting

Mixing modern architecture and traditional arena theater design, the Shaolin Flying Monks Temple features a massive wind tunnel that lets combatants in rural Henan, China, fly and fight in front of hundreds of fascinated observers.

The mountainous setting is home to the historical Shaolin Monastery (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and is considered the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and the Kung Fu martial arts practice (as well as the cradle of Chinese civilization more broadly).

Designed by Latvian architect Austris Mailitis, the pavilion is designed to be both contemporary while also deferential to the region and its traditions. The designer was commissioned based on a chance meeting at the Shanghai Expo in 2010.

The mounded shape of the complex and branching, trunk-like protrusion of the tunnel take their inspiration from a translation of Shaolin, meaning: mountain in the wood.

“The architectural and conceptual image pays respect to the beauty of surrounding nature and the historical heritage of the site. Developed in the shape of two symbols – mountain and tree – it serves as a platform for any kind of scenic arts focusing especially on flying performances.”

“The building method combines modern and ancient technologies,” explained the architect” — a laser-cut steel superstructure supports stone steps handcrafted using local quarry resources.”

Metallic Life Forms: Kinetic Sculptures Undulate in the Wind

There’s something alien about the way these metallic structures move, a fluidity that makes them seem as if they’re alive. Each one transforms so completely as it spins, the results almost seem like optical illusions. It’s really all a play of light and shadow on cleverly designed kinetic sculptures, which are engineered to spin effortlessly whether the winds are barely blowing or gusting with extreme force.

Working through many a night in his remote workshop on Orcas Island, Washington, Howe refuses commissioned orders, working only from his personal creative inspiration. Hundreds of his sculptures have sold to private and public collections around the world, including large-scale urban works in several cities.

“Kinetic sculpture resides at the intersection of artistic inspiration and mechanical complexity. The making of one of my nieces relies on creative expression, metal fabrication, and a slow design process in equal parts. It aims to alter one’s experience of time and space when witnessed. It also needs to weather winds of 90mph and still move in a one mile per hour breeze and do so for hundreds of years.”

Weekly Photography Challenge – Wind

It is one of those tricky concepts or subjects to photograph because it’s sort of invisible. So what can you do to capture an image of it? How about these ideas:

Sailing or sailboats
Kites
Trees, flowers or grass blowing in the wind

Clouds moving quickly across the sky

A person’s hair blowing off or across their face
Weathervanes

Eco Capsule: Mobile Grid-Free Home Harnesses Sun, Wind & Rain

With stylistic nods to classic rounded Airstream trailers, this next-generation mobile pod dwelling is powered by solar and wind energy and provides drinkable water by recycling and filtering the rain.

Designed by Nice Architects, the Ecocapsule shelter is intended to accommodate two people, providing basic necessities and bonus amenities including a fold-out bed, living and dining space, cozy kitchenette, working shower and flush toilet.

A 750-watt wind turbine attaches to the exterior and the roof is clad in a series of built-in solar cells providing multiple means of generating energy for the home. Power can be stored in an onboard battery with close to a 10,000 watt-hour capacity.

The entire structure is road-worthy as well: just under 15 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet tall and weighing a bit over 3,000 pounds. It can be fit into a standard-sized shipping container or towed behind a vehicle. Currently in a prototype phase, the company plans to put these units on the market within the next year.

Its makers envision a great variety of potential uses: “Ecocapsule is a portable house offering an unmatched dwelling experience. With its immense off-grid life span, worldwide portability and flexibility it is suitable for a wide range of applications: from an independent research station or a tourist lodge to an emergency housing or a humanitarian-action unit.”

Springtime Paddling on Horsetooth Reservoir with Sea Wind Canoe

I started my 2015 paddling season on Horsetooth Reservoir in early February, but my favorite time is springtime: a lot of fresh green, wild plums and other bushes in bloom, high water lever with submerged cottonwood trees and little power boat traffic. The reservoir is more than 98% full at this time (see reservoir data.

Horsetooth Reservoir is 6 miles long, but I wonder how long would be a lap around the entire lake following closely the shore. 25+ miles? There is only one way to check it out. So far this year, I haven’t paddled more than 10 miles, always in Sea Wind canoe.

There are several access spots to launch your kayak, canoe or SUP:
1. South Bay – boat ramp
2. Inlet Bay – boat ramp
3. Satanka Bay – boat ramp
4. Sunrise Area from the Centennial Road (closed during winter).
5. North Eltuck Cove from the Lory State Park (trail access up to 0.25 mile at a low water)

I am avoiding boat ramps during power boat season. Off season, I am often using one of the South Bay boat ramps. It’s possible to park on a beach close to water there. Right now, boat ramps are very short and a regular parking is really close to water. I use Sunrise Area next to swimming “beach” mostly during summer. The shore there is quite rocky and not protected from waves and boat wakes. Access point 1-4 require Larimer County Parks pass and 5 – Colorado State Park pass for your car. I used to carry my light Thunderbolt kayak from the Lory State park or tow Sea Wind on snow.

Winter Season Paddling on Horsetooth Reservoir with Sea Wind Canoe

In a typical winter all lakes in northern Colorado are frozen, so I am paddling on the South Platte River. However, this winter I have not been on the river yet. All time I am paddling Sea Wind canoe on the Horsetooth Reservoir just west of Fort Collins. I didn’t paddle in January when the lake was partially frozen and there was no good access to open water.

The ice on Horsetooth is usually starting from its southern end. So, if the South Bay is covered by ice it my be still possible to launch in the north at Satanka Cove from a boat ramp or rocky tip next to the Horsetooth Dam. Sunrise Area on the eastern side would be perfect for winter launching, but is closed for a cold season. You would have to use a cart to transport boats from a parking lot down to the water or execute a pretty long portage.

Pictures below cover all my paddling from late November 2014 till late February 2015.

Converted Crane: 150-Foot-Tall Dutch Hotel Spins in the Wind

Featuring three suites toward its peak (and a spa pool to top it off), this boutique hotel is situated in one of the tallest and oldest maritime cranes in the world – and despite the steel frame weighing a whopping 250 tons, it still slowly rotates with the weather.

After three years of rehabilitation, code approval and other obstacles (include the search for a 500-pound bomb left from a previous World War), this remarkable transformation is complete and rooms are now open for rent at the Faralda Crane Hotel.

The lower part of the structure also features a conference, television and festival room that can be tied to renting out the rest of the spaces or used independently. If that isn’t exciting enough for you and your friends, guests can also bungee jump from the top of the crane as well.

The rotational effects (top able to move independently of the bottom) are not to be underestimated, demanding a great deal of engineering ingenuity: “Because the Faralda Crane hotel keeps spinning in the wind it is fit with a rotating shaft and a pivot bearing with gold. In the drag link are the gold connectors to guarantee the Internet connection to the Amsterdam Fire Department. The genius and always turning piping system has been specially designed for this Crane.”
