Front-runner: Nikon D500 leads class in studio and dynamic range tests

27 Apr

At long last, a Nikon D500 has found its way into our office (thank you LensRentals!). We put the camera straight into our studio to find out what the long-awaited successor to the D300 is capable of. It’s only the beginning of course, but you can see for yourself below what the D500’s full ISO range looks like in our studio scene (cranked all the way up to ISO 1,638,400) and on the next page you’ll see the results of our dynamic range testing. There’s good news in store – in our initial testing the D500’s performance is class-leading with respect to low light (high ISO) noise performance, as well as dynamic range. In fact, it’s essentially ISO invariant, taking after Nikon’s own D7200 rather than the D5.

LensRentals tests Lomography’s Petzval lens

11 Jul

We recently published a look at the Lomography Petzval lens, a modern version of a 19th century portrait lens. It’s a niche product and not something we typically cover, but an interesting adaptation of a classic design. Roger Cicala and the team at LensRentals went one step further – when a couple of copies rolled through the door, they subjected the lens to their usual optics tests. Why? Well, because why not?

17 June, 2014 – Sony A7s Tests With Lower DR than A7r

18 Jun

Who do you trust? I trust my eyes. And so when I tested the Sony A7s the other day and found that I couldn’t see any dynamic range advantage over the A7r, that’s what I wrote. But, I was chastised by many because Sony claimed 15 stops of DR. Why the hell couldn’t Michael see it?

Now, two days later, DxO Labs has published their sensor test results for the A7s and indeed the A7s ranks almost a stop lower than the A7r. One may debate whether or not DxO and Sony use the same measurement criteria, but there’s no way to quibble about the fact that DxO has hundreds of self-consistent lab tests spanning years, regardless of the absolute numbers. I guess the eyes have it.

The full review is on the way but for now, read our shooter’s report, and compare the E-M10 to a growing list of cameras in our new studio test scene.

shared:DxOMark-logo-520.jpg

DxOMark has tested the Canon EOS 70D’s live view autofocus system in comparison to the Sony SLT-A77, looking at focus speeds and accuracy in both movie and stills modes. The two cameras offer an intriguing contrast in technologies; the 70D uses Canon’s latest ‘Dual Pixel AF’ on-sensor phase detection, while the A77 employs a separate phase detection AF sensor which receives light via a semi-transparent mirror. Click through to see how the two cameras fare in DxOMark’s head-to-head testing.

Nikon Zoom-Nikkor 43-86mm 1:3.5 Ai lens – Video Tests

31 Jan

In this episode I do a short set of video samples using the Nikon Zoom-Nikkor 43-86mm 1:3.5 Ai lens. This may be an old lens but it can still shoot some great video when coupled with a modern DSLR! Nikon 43-86mm 1:3.5 Ai Zoom-Nikkor lens: amzn.to This lens will work great on DX Nikon DSLRs for video or photos in Manual mode (‘M’ on the dial) only with Live view turned on. -soon I will post a video with a trick I found out to get them to work without Live View, comment if you need to know now! Please check your compatibility first! For Canon or other DSLRs, or micro four thirds cameras please look into lens adapters, they are a great option to get some inexpensive older Nikon glass on whatever you shoot with.
