Laurel

Wow! What a great lens! I would love to win a new lens like this. Over the past ten years, as my skills have greatly improved, I have upgraded my DSLR three times. I need to replace my aging 50-500 telezoom with a faster, more responsive AF lens with vibration compensation. Sadly, at this time, I cannot afford it. My passion and dedicated hobby is bird photography in all seasons. I love sharing the bird photos with my homebound parent and with others.

Should I win the A035 lens, it would be a dedicated lens for bird and wildlife photography. The challenge of shooting birds, who are mostly never quite still to flight shots of raptors and hawks, requires a rapidly focusing lens to clearly focus on the bird’s rapid wing movements of the tiniest hummingbirds to the largest raptors. I have reviewed the specs of the A035, and these are the strong selling points that stand out to me: highly responsive AF, APSC format for Nikon, handheld ability, moisture resistance with leak-proof seals throughout the whole lens barrel, the eband for reducing glare and ghosting, minimum distance of 1.5m, smoother background blurring, the USB connection to update lens firmware (never had that before on a lens), f stop of 4.5-6.3, the fluorine coating on lens. I also like the detachable mount for tripod, as I do use one from time to time. I am extremely impressed by this lens’ capabilities, which far exceeds my current telezoom lens. Thank you for reading my entry.

Mitzi

After a hiatus of many years, I am re-engaging in digital photography. Going through two major life transitions has pulled me back to my camera: I got sober in early 2016 and entered long-term alcohol recovery, and my Dad, an avid photographer for his whole life, developed ALS/MND in late 2016 and died in mid-2017 after a terrifyingly fast progression.

Something about these events made me want to get behind the lens again. The combination of the technical and creative aspects of photography helps with recovery (substance, as well as trauma/grief) by giving my brain something new and demanding to do, and the process makes me feel closer to my Dad.

Having a fast 35mm prime for my full-frame DSLR is a dream of mine. Travel and street photography are highest on my list of interests, and the ability to give context even to close shots would be fantastic. In this new stage of shooting, I find that I want to get close to my subjects more often than not (a change from my earlier days, when I loved to zoom), and the close focus distance would be brilliant for that. As well, my family has started a new tradition of traveling together at Christmas, and it would be so rewarding to have this lens to capture our memories for Christmas 2020. Finally, this is a new focal length for me and one that would spark new development/learning — which, as noted, I’ve discovered to be excellent therapy.

Thank you for running this contest and letting me tell these parts of my story.

Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Lens for Sony Review

14 Feb

The post Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Lens for Sony Review appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Suzi Pratt.

tamron-35mm-f2-8-lens-review-sony

Hot on the heels of Tamron’s widely successful f/2.8 zoom lenses comes a trio of f/2.8 prime lenses, specifically a Tamron 20mm, 24mm, and 35mm. I recently tested the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 and found it to be a surprisingly fun little lens.

Why surprising? Well, the 35mm f/2.8 may seem like an odd lens at first glance. There are faster versions of this focal length, such as the 35mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/1.4. And for those who shoot with a 16-35mm f/2.8 or 24-70mm f/2.8, this lens might seem unnecessary. However, there are a few clever tricks that the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 lens has up its sleeve to set it apart from the competition.

Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Lens for Sony Review

Tech specs

The official name of this lens is the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 Lens. It is made for Sony E-mount mirrorless full-frame cameras. Affordably priced at $ 349 USD, this is among the cheapest 35mm FE E-mount lens options.

Only Samyang makes a cheaper version.

All other FE 35mm options are over double the price of this Tamron. However, most of them have apertures of f/1.8 or faster.

  • Maximum Aperture: f/2.8
  • Minimum Aperture: f/22
  • Lens Mount: Sony E
  • Format Compatibility: Full-Frame
  • Angle of View: 63° 26′
  • Minimum Focus Distance: 5.9″ / 14.99 cm
  • Maximum Magnification: 0.5x
  • Macro Reproduction Ratio: 1:2
  • Optical Design: 9 Elements in 8 Groups
  • Diaphragm Blades: 7, Rounded
  • Focus Type: Autofocus
  • Image Stabilization: No
  • Filter Size: 67 mm (Front)
  • Dimensions (ø x L): 2.87 x 2.5″ / 73 x 63.5 mm
  • Weight: 7.4 oz / 210 g
  • Price: $ 349 USD

Compact size

Coming in at just 3oz, the Tamron 35mm 2/.8 lens is so lightweight, it may feel as though you forgot to attach a lens to your camera. Its size makes it a great lens for travel or street photography.

Since it isn’t terribly heavy, the lens does have a mostly plastic feel to it. However, the lens is still weather-sealed and even comes with a gasket in the bayonet to prevent moisture and dust from building up.

Tamron also offers a 5-year warranty with all of its products, which should help put your mind that ease.

Fun macro capabilities

Despite its light weight, the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 is a bit chunky – it’s definitely not a pancake lens.

But part of the reason for the lens’ size is its macro capabilities. As noted in the tech specs above, this lens has a minimum focusing distance of 5.9 inches (15 cm) and a macro reproduction ratio of 1:2. This means that you can get really close to your photo subjects for some macro photography fun.

When focusing at a close distance, the bokeh looks amazing, making up for this lens’ f/2.8 aperture.

Tamron 35mm f/2.8 review

Sony a7r iii with Tamron 35mm f/2.8. Focal length 35mm, 1/125 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400, Aperture Priority

Excellent image quality

I paired the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 lens with a Sony A7riii and found the resulting images to be pleasing. The images were sharp with excellent contrast, good bokeh, and just a small amount of vignetting.

The lens also performed well while shooting video. However, there is no image stabilization in the lens, so it is not an optimal choice for video shooters.

Laggy autofocus

After listing several high points of this lens, it’s time to talk about its downfall – autofocus.

Given Sony’s reputation for having fast and accurate autofocus in its cameras, this lens’ autofocus performance was disappointing.

When paired with my Sony A7riii, the Tamron often struggled to focus on both macro and non-macro shots. The autofocus problem worsened in low lighting. As someone with lots of experience with macro photography, I suspect that the slow autofocus is due to the lens’ macro capabilities. So in a way, it’s a trade-off – you can shoot macro with this lens but at the cost of slow autofocus.

In Conclusion

Should you get this lens?

If you are a beginner photographer looking for a compact prime lens to experiment with, the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 would be a great choice. It has a great price point and will help you develop an eye for photography, as the 35mm focal length is often recommended as the best lens for beginners.

Even experienced photographers may prefer this compact lens with macro capabilities for travel or street photography. However, if you often shoot fast-paced subjects or in low light environments, save up for the more expensive, faster versions of this lens.

Have you tried the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 lens? Share with us your thought in the comments section.

Tamron reveals it has three new, unannounced mirrorless lenses planned for 2020

11 Feb
The relevant section (the teal section, middle-right) of the above graphic has been altered to include the translated text.

Buried within Tamron’s full-year financial report was a little detail that hints at Tamron revealing three new, unannounced lenses for mirrorless cameras in 2020.

The new information can be seen in the above graphic within the presentation that shows Tamron has five models planned for 2020, two of which have already been announced: the 20mm F2.8 lens for Sony E-mount cameras (Adorama, B&H) and a compact 70–180mm F2.8 lens for Sony E-mount cameras that’s currently in development.

It’s unknown what the three new lenses will be, but Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting all three will be E-mount lenses.

Other details in the report include a statement claiming Tamron expects ‘the sales of own-brand [mirrorless lens] models is expected to increase the sales compare to the previous year’ and confirmation its 17–28mm F2.8 lens should no longer be backordered by the end of February.

Tamron’s new trio of compact, 1:2 macro prime lenses includes a 35mm F2.8, a 24mm F2.8, and this lens, a 20mm F2.8 for Sony’s full-frame E-mount cameras. We found that the lack of a super-fast maximum aperture is at least partially made up by the impressive close-focusing distance, and the lens is weather-sealed and affordable to boot. Take a look at what this lens can do on a 61MP Sony a7R IV, and catch a glimpse of some Seattle snow while you’re at it.

News: Tamron Announces E-Mount Prime Lenses for a Great Price

29 Nov

The post News: Tamron Announces E-Mount Prime Lenses for a Great Price appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Jaymes Dempsey.

News: Tamron Announces E-Mount Prime Lenses for a Great Price

Last month, Tamron announced three Sony E-mount lenses:

  • The 20mm f/2.8 Di III
  • The 24mm f/2.8 Di III
  • The 35mm f/2.8 Di III

These new E-mount lenses expand the range of glass for Sony mirrorless shooters while making the Sony full-frame lens lineup more affordable for those who can’t justify Sony prices.

In other words: If you’re thinking of switching to Sony but don’t want to pay a premium for full-frame E-mount glass, you have a way in. Each of these lenses is debuting for an ultra-low price of $ 349 USD; compare this to some of Sony’s full-frame E-mount lenses, and you’ll understand why these Tamron offerings are so exciting.

Of course, there’s always a question of optical quality. Can a sub-$ 500 USD lens really be equivalent to Sony’s current 24mm and 35mm glass? The answer is undoubtedly “No,” but not everyone requires the sharpest, fastest, most perfect lenses money can buy. And Tamron has proven themselves to be very capable lens manufacturers in the past, making me think that these lenses will be optically satisfying, even if they can’t go toe-to-toe with some of Sony’s fastest primes.

According to Tamron, we should expect “superb high-resolution performance,” and that “these lenses can be used with complete confidence for a wide range of applications from casual family snaps to serious professional photography.”

While these are bold words from Tamron, I wouldn’t dismiss them out of hand. Plus, Tamron has made sure to include some extra features that make these lenses impressively flexible. For instance, the lenses themselves are relatively small, which makes them ideal for walkaround shooting and travel photography. And all three lenses also offer 1:2 close-focusing capabilities. This won’t get you to true macro magnifications, but you’ll be able to capture some gorgeous close-ups, even as you use the lenses for more general wide-angle photography.

Speaking of wide-angle photography:

For me, the main drawback of this announcement is the lack of focal length diversity. While lenses in the 20-35mm focal length range are undoubtedly useful for a broad range of Sony photographers, I’d have liked to see a telephoto in the mix.

Here’s the bottom line:

For hobbyist and enthusiast photographers who like to work with lightweight wide-angle primes but don’t require f/1.2-f/1.8 apertures, these Tamron lenses are definitely worth a look. The 24mm f/2.8 is available for pre-order, while the 35mm f/2.8 has begun to ship. The 20mm f/2.8 should hit the shelves in January.

What do you think of this announcement? Are you interested in these lenses? Would you have preferred different focal lengths? Share your thoughts in the comments!
