AVID Media Composer 2020.4 update moves to 64-bit, delivering support for latest macOS and Mac Pro

AVID has released a new update for AVID Media Composer, its popular video editing software. The new version, AVID Media Composer 2020.4, includes numerous new features, but the biggest one for Mac users is that the software is finally 64-bit.

Apple’s macOS Mojave was the last version of Apple’s operating system to support 32-bit apps. Apple warned software developers for a couple of years that 32-bit apps would no longer be supported with macOS Catalina. As photographers and videographers alike have upgraded to macOS Catalina or purchased new computers such as Apple’s latest Mac Pro which ships with Catalina, they have had to deal with outdated software no longer being supported. Until AVID Media Composer 2020.4, that list of inoperable software included Media Composer.

In addition to being 64-bit, AVID Media Composer 2020.4 also includes a new Universal Media Engine (UME). This new UME speeds up the entire workflow, right from file ingest, by removing reliance on QuickTime. AVID promises that the new UME will be felt via improved performance during importing, playback, editing and exporting files.

Windows users can now create, edit, collaborate on and export Apple ProRes media natively. This includes full encoding and decoding support. However, per Cinema5D, it appears that this may not include support for ProRes RAW files. On AVID’s latest blog post detailing Media Composer 2020.4, there is no mention of ProRes RAW.

The updates in AVID Media Composer 2020.4 are not limited to under-the-hood improvements, the team has also worked on improving the user interface and making the software more efficient. Additions and improvements include a Timeline Sequence Map, which allows for a full view of 128-track sequence, color coding for bin tabs, Titler+ improvements, bulk editing capabilities, multi-select tools, faster sound separation, new 9×16 and 1:1 aspect ratio mask margins, new color space support, additional workspace customization options and much more.

Adobe tweaks Creative Residency program to launch $1M support fund for visual creatives

Adobe has announced the latest iteration of its Adobe Creative Resident program, one that has changed substantially in light of the coronavirus pandemic. This year, Adobe says that it will only select two Creative Residents, but that it will also launch a $ 1 million Creative Residency Community Fund intended to support creators during the economic downturn.

Adobe explains that this fund will be open globally and will be used to hire creatives for projects commissioned by Adobe over the next year, as well as personal projects. Creatives who get support from Adobe for personal and commissioned projects will also receive career guidance workshops, Creative Cloud memberships and other unspecified support.

Visual creatives interested in the fund will need to apply on Adobe’s website here. Applicants have the choice of applying for a creative project grant, which will range from $ 500 to $ 5,000, or for Adobe project commissions, which will also be valued at $ 500 to $ 5,000. Applicants aren’t required to propose a project when applying for commissioned work.

Adobe plans to run its fund for 12 months from May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021. Recipients will be notified about their inclusion in the program 30 to 60 days after submitting their application; the grants are issued on a monthly basis.

Adobe says that creatives can apply for the Community Fund even if they already applied for the Creative Residency this year but weren’t selected. The company is accepting applications from a variety of visual creatives, including professionals who work with 3D, graphic design, short-form online videos, photography, digital painting and drawing, motion design and UX/UI/VX/XD design.

As far as commissioned work goes, professionals who are selected for projects will receive work based on their portfolio, skills and what Adobe happens to need at the time. This could include artwork for social media or use in applications, or something like creating a video, writing an article or developing a tutorial, according to the company.

Beyond this, Adobe announced that Christina Poku and Maddy Beard are its two Creative Residents for the 2020-2021 year. It’s yet to be seen whether the coronavirus pandemic is over by the start of Adobe’s next residency period and what kind of impact that may have on the company’s future plans for its program.

Pixelmator Photo 1.2 update adds cursor support, ML Color Match, Split View and more

Pixelmator has released a 1.2 update for its powerful iPad photo editing app Pixelmator Photo that adds cursor support, an improved Split View mode, a Match Colors tool, a new copy/paste function and much more.

The update comes on the heels of Apple’s new iPad Pro models and accompany Magic Keyboards, which offer not only a tactile typing experience, but also an integrated trackpad that works alongside iPadOS 13.4 to bring mouse-like support to iPadOS apps. By adding support for the new cursor functionality, Pixelmator Photo adds yet another means of input for editing photos on the go (it works with third-party Bluetooth cursors and trackpads as well).

Also new is Split View support, which lets you use Pixelmator Photo alongside another app without interrupting your workflow, as well as a new ML Match Colors function, which allows you to ‘match the look and feel of one photo to another’ thanks to machine-learning. Pixelmator has also added a new intensity slider for color adjustments and presets and the ability to share images directly from the Photos browser within the app without opening each image individually.

Other improvements and fixes addressed in the 1.2 update include improved screenshot capture, new default color adjustment options, a collection of user interface changes and a handful of bug fixes to smooth out the overall experience.

Pixelmator Photo 1.2 is available to download in the iOS App Store for $ 4.99.

CamFi update adds wireless tethering support to Fujifilm’s most popular cameras

CamFi has announced the latest version of its application now supports wireless tethering for some of Fujifilm’s most popular camera systems.

The app update supports the following Fujifilm cameras: X-T2, X-T3, X-H1, GFX 50R, GFX 50S and GFX 100, and will work with the CamFi’s CF 101, CF 102, CamFi Pro and CamFi Pro Plus units. In addition to nearly instantaneous image transfers to laptops or mobile devices over Wi-Fi, the update also supports live view mode, remote capture, time-lapse, HDR and focus stacking modes.

CamFi has also added the ability to save a Raw image to the camera’s SD card while remotely transferring over the JPEG to the connected device, allowing for quicker transfers while still getting an image preview. A new USB connector for Fujifilm cameras has also been released, which CamFi says will extend the battery life of the CamFi unit’s battery from one hour to three hours.

The CamFi mobile app update is available to download in the Google Play Store and iOS App Store, where it’s rated 3.4 stars and 2.9 stars, respectively. The macOS and Windows desktop apps are available to download on CamFi’s website.

CamFi app update adds wireless tethering support for popular Fujifilm cameras

Guangdong, CHINA—April 8, 2020—CamFi, maker of wireless camera controllers, today announced that the new version of its app adds wireless tethering support for Fujifilm cameras. This feature allows the photographer to transmit photos from a Fujifilm camera to a laptop or a mobile phone via Wi-Fi automatically during a photo shoot.

“It is not very convenient to review the photos on a mobile device or a Mac while shooting by Fujifilm camera,” explained Mark Ma, CEO of CamFi. “The built-in Wi-Fi is too slow. Our new feature changes all that. Now, our device and app will speed up the workflow of photographers who use Fujifilm cameras.”

The new version of the app delivers a great deal of convenience to Fujifilm photographers. It supports the most popular Fujifilm cameras that are available after this update, including X-T2, X-T3, X-H1, GFX 50R, GFX 50S and GFX 100. The new version of the app also supports live view, remote capture, time lapse, HDR and focus stacking. Furthermore, this version allows photographers to save an image’s RAW file on the camera’s SD card and transfer the JPG file to the client device only. This capability can shorten the time required to review the photo.

All existing users of CamFi CF 101, CF 102, CamFi Pro and CamFi Pro Plus can upgrade their firmware with this version. Windows, Mac, iOS and Android platforms are all supported.

To prevent draining the battery of the CamFi device, CamFi also released a new USB connector for Fujifilm cameras. It will extend the work time of CamFi’s battery from 1 hour to 3 hours.

Fotodiox’s new EF to L-mount adapter features AF, aperture and image stabilization support

Fotodiox has announced the release of its new Canon EF to L-Mount Pro Fusion adapter, which offers complete electronic control and communication between the lens and the camera it’s attached to.

The adapter works with both EF and EF-S lenses and converts them to L-Mount mirrorless cameras. It features an all-metal design with chrome-plated brass mounts and features a built-in Micro USB for updating the firmware of the adapter.

Fotodiox uses its ‘Fusion’ technology to add complete electronic communication and control between the lens and camera body, including autofocus, aperture control and image stabilization. EXIF and aperture data is also transmitted between the lens and camera. In the event you’re using a manual lens, the ‘Fn’ button on the adapter can be pressed to turn off all electronic communication between the lens and camera body.

Fotodiox notes continuous AF and video AF aren’t currently supported due to ‘unsatisfactory’ performance, but other autofocus modes should work with minimal issues. It’s also pointed out that some third party lenses, such as those from Sigma and Tamron might struggle with autofocus a bit more than first-party lenses.

The adapter is backed by a two-year manufacturer warranty, comes packed inside a padded bamboo box and is currently available to purchase for $ 179.95 (B&H).

Apple’s latest beta suggests ProRes RAW support for Adobe apps is coming to Windows

Apple has released a version 1.0 beta of ProRes Raw for Windows that adds support for Apple’s video codec in several Adobe apps on Microsoft’s operating system.

In the support text accompanying the download, Apple says the beta release ‘enables playback of ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ video files in compatible applications on Windows systems.’ This includes Adobe After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, Adobe Premiere and Adobe Premiere Rush.

Assuming this support makes it out of beta and expands to other applications, this could help to make ProRes Raw a more useful standard for video work. The download, which comes in at 737KB, is available to download on Apple’s support page.

DxO PhotoLab 3.2 introduces improved local adjustment tools, new camera support and more

DxO PhotoLab 3 has been updated to version 3.2. The free update includes numerous improvements plus raw file support for five new cameras. Long known for its local adjustment tools, DxO PhotoLab 3.2 introduces new Duplicate and Rename features in the Local Adjustments Palette. The Repair Tool, used to remove distracting elements from your image, has a new display mode for better visibility. DxO PhotoLab 3.2 includes new multi-image keywords, plus Windows users now have access to renaming functionality.

Regarding improved local adjustment mask management, with the new Duplicate and Rename features, users can reproduce masks from image to image. Once applied to a new image, the mask can then be adapted as needed for each image. To aid in easy identification of individual masks you have created, DxO PhotoLab 3.2 adds the ability to rename your masks. You can also quickly move each mask with a single click when using the brush tool.

The simplified Repair Tool display mode interface has been redesigned to allow the user to see more of the background when removing objects. This means that it will be easier to make accurate and realistic looking repairs to your images. The area being retouched is now outlined with a thin line, as can be seen in the screenshot below.

In prior versions of DxO PhotoLab 3, users could add and delete individual keywords. In PhotoLab 3.2, users can now differentiate between keywords that are tagged to multiple images. As mentioned earlier, Windows users can also now rename keywords.

Capture One Pro 20 update adds support for 7 new camera bodies, 6 new lenses

Capture One has announced an update that adds support for seven new camera bodies from Fujifilm, Nikon, Canon and Olympus as well as six new lenses from Sony, Nikon and Pentax. A handful of bugs have also been squashed along the way.

As for new camera body support, Capture One version 20.0.3 now supports the Fujifilm X-T4, Fujifilm X100V, Nikon D780, Nikon D3500, Canon EOS M100, Canon EOS M200 and the Olympus TG-6. Capture One emphasizes in its press release (embedded below) the new support for the Fujfilm X-T4, saying it is the first company to offer ‘official support’ for Fujifilm’s newest APS-C camera system.

Below is a list of the lenses the update adds support for:

Nik Collection 2.5 update adds new color film emulations and Affinity Photo support

DxO has released an update for its Nik Collection 2.5 standalone app and plugin, bringing with it new film stock emulations and updated support.

Nik Collection 2.5, which DxO is teasing as the ‘Legendary Color Films Revival,’ brings along five new film stock emulations: Agfa Precisa 100, Fuji FP100C, Fuji Instax, Fuji Provia 400X and Lomo RedScale 100. In addition to the new film stocks, the update also adds support for the latest version of Serif’s Affinity Photo editing program, which we covered earlier today.

The 2.5 update works with Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Lightroom Classic CC, DxO PhotoLab 2 Essential Edition, Affinity Photo 1.8 and as a standlone app. It’s available for free to all current owners and is available to purchase for $ 149. The collection includes Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Dfine, HDR Efex Pro, Viveza, Silver Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro and DxO PhotoLab.
