Silent Slaughterhouse: Pool Produces Infinite Reflections

18 Mar

To gain entrance to this darkened slaughterhouse chamber filled with seemingly infinite reflections, you’ll have to dial a phone number that produces a ripple on the surface of the water covering the building’s floor. Outside the otherworldly scene you’ll find a stack of business cards with instructions in two languages “to activate this artwork.” Your presence, the artist insinuates, is an interruption.

Even the title of the work, ‘Every Word is Like an Unnecessary Stain on Silence and Nothingness,‘ makes a statement on the potential sacredness of forgotten spaces, no matter what their origins may be. In this case, the charred room in which you’ll find yourself is the former cooling chamber of a slaughterhouse in Madrid.

Artist Eugenio Ampudia needs very little in the way of augmentation to create the atmosphere within this disused space. The water makes it seem to go on and on, and carries echoes so far that every little squeak of a shoe or muffled cough is amplified.

Ampudia explains that the work is a critique of modern communication. “It’s true that modern technology has allowed us to connect with thousands of people almost simultaneously. But what is happening with communication? Why is draft legislation eing put forward tov eto the flow of information among citizens? What is more disturbing: people trying to communicate something or people uniting with the same intent? Who is scared of the words ‘network’ and ‘community’?”

Abandoned Railroad Paris 1
Among the rusting vestiges of Europe’s Industrial Revolution, this 20-mile relic of a railroad in Paris has been abandoned since 1934, and while it has been retaken by nature in the ensuing decades, it will likely disappear altogether as the city grows. Photographer Pierre Folk has spent the last few years capturing what remains of ‘La Petite Ceinture,’ known as ‘Little Belt’ in English.

From the series, "By the Silent Line."

Completed in the 1860s, the railroad carried passengers around the City of Light until the underground metro system and personal automobile made it obsolete. At its peak, it was considered a hallmark of progress, with transfers to other Paris railway networks completed by horse-drawn carts. But once it was decommissioned, access was restricted, turning it into a sort of post-apocalyptic time capsule.

In the eighty years since it was last in use, La Petite Ceinture has become a habitat for at least 70 different animal species and host to over 200 varieties of plants. Folk’s photographs reveal a strange sort of in-between phase in which this stretch of railway in such a vibrant, metropolitan city is nearly forgotten, tangled with ivy.

As popular elevated parks like the High Line in New York City and Paris’ own Promenade Plantee prove, it likely won’t stay this way for long. Proposals have already been put forth to transform the rail from its current eerily quiet state into public space. Says Folk, “As a river, its shores constantly change over time, but it persists… an intimate place where past and modernity make their acquaintance.”

DIY ‘blimp’ case makes Nikon D800 silent and waterproof for $80

10 Jul

soundblimp.jpg

So-called ‘blimp’ cases are designed to greatly reduce the sound of a camera’s shutter, making it safe to take record shots during filming for TV and movies. Typically, commercial blimp cases cost upwards of $ 1000, but pro photographer Dan Tabár made his own using a Pelican case, some ABS pipe fittings, a wireless shutter release, and other simple parts sourced at a hardware store, for around $ 80. Click through to see how well it works for both sound suppression and underwater shooting.

silent tapes- Klong Toei project by silent tapes

11 Jun

When we stepped foot onto Bangkok’s Klong Toey slum, we had no idea what to expect or what we were getting ourselves into. A juxtaposition of feelings is what would best describe us at that moment. The further we delved in, the more we became overwhelmed by the lives and the spirit of its people. Life seemed so surreal there and somehow living with close to nothing seemed acceptable. It was absolute functioning chaos but shed a light on the excessive lifestyles of not just the west, but of people all over the world who cannot fathom living without the many luxuries they have.

silent tapes1

The railroad tracks were cluttered with tiny wooden shacks, most of them falling apart with little or no windows at all. Families and friends were gathered around in circles, having a beer or two and sharing food. Children played on what seemed to be a perfect playground for their curious little minds; throwing fistfuls of dirt in the air and jumping on roofless mattresses on the trackside. The drug addicted roamed about, adding a bit of intimidation to the place but keeping to them selves most of the time. A melting pot of people lived along this path, all of which surprisingly seemed harmless. We were even invited to dinner by one local man, but didn’t want to press our luck considering we were new to the area!

Deeper into the narrow alleyways were glimpses of family life, and their daily routines were no different from ours. It was close to sunset and the scent of Thai cooking was amidst! Every time we encountered a group of young teenagers, they took the opportunity to practice their English, so we’d exchange responses with them in Thai and learned a few new lines along the way. To our surprise, we even came across one young girl playing with a new Ipad!

We tried to capture simple moments that wouldn’t patronize these ordinary people who often become stigmatized by the rest of society. There were moments where it seemed these people were just making the best of their situation, no matter how dire it may be. In essence, we all share the same emotions and handle the lives we were born into accordingly. The people in this community were nothing short of welcoming and vibrant. Their energy was infectious. The following photos are part of a project in progress.

silent tapes is a series of projects by 2 photographers, Francis and Stephanie Lane, focusing on documenting the lives of people from different cultures in various slums around the world, and generating funds for those communities through their works.

The Silent Valley: Landscapes Overtaken by Urbanization

Silent Cities Yongliang 1

The rapid industrialization of China and its effects on the nation’s beautiful natural scenery are depicted taking over traditional landscape scenes in a stunningly detailed series of digital works by artist Yang Yongliang. The imagery of Song dynasty artists, who painted pastoral scenes filled with peaceful mountains and pristine waterways, is juxtaposed to disconcerting effect with futuristic megacities, leaving little land untouched by urban growth.

Silent Cities Yongliang 2

Silent Cities Yongliang 4

The viewer must get very close to each work to see all of the complexities contained within them. Yongliang has envisioned a future in which there is virtually no escape from the hand of man, with skyscrapers clinging to the sides of mountains and rivers clogged with boats. What might be a dark nighttime scene is hazy with light pollution, made even brighter by presumably smog-filled skies.

Silent Cities Yongliang 5

‘Sleepless Wonderland’, pictured above, even mimics the artistic style of 12th century Song dynasty painters with ‘cun’, traditional texture strokes that were used to outline trees and texture land surfaces. These Song landscapes have long been considered an ideal representation of the beauty of Chinese nature.

In other works, such as ‘Crocodile and Shotgun’, figures in traditional Chinese dress look out upon wasted landscapes filled with industrial remnants and land mines. ‘Bowl of Tapei’ offers two variations of the city: one idyllic, with hovering clouds, the other dystopian and steaming with factory smoke. See more at Galerie Paris Beijing.

Silent Hill 2 – HD Stereoscopic 3D (Anaglyph) – Various Cutscenes

12 Apr

READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING NOTE: Must have anaglyph glasses (red/cyan lenses) to properly view this video. Made possible with use of the IZ3D 3D driver. The IZ3D driver makes DirectX 9 and higher games in stereo 3D whereas Silent Hill 2 PC uses DirectX 8. Unfortunately I cannot adjust the seperation/convergence for the 3D depth with this game. It’s lucky this even worked but there are various glitches while using it: Anywhere James can and does use his flashlight “blacks” out the entire environment. An example of this is near the end of the video when James is shooting Pyramid Head through the closet. The light caused by the pistol flash glitches out whatever the light is touching.
