Several Canon 1D X Mark III users are reporting issues with the OVF freezing in burst mode

A number of Canon 1D X Mark III owners have reported issues with Canon’s flagship DSLR, wherein the camera appears to lock up and fall asleep while shooting in continuous mode.

First reported nearly three weeks ago in the DPReview forums, users have noticed their 1D X Mark III cameras seizing up after a few shots, making the camera unusable for a few seconds until it appears to reset. DPReview reader Hamilton Pytluk made what we believe to be the first mention of the issue when he had the following to say (emphasis his) in the Canon EOS-1D forums:

“My only gripe so far [with the 1D X Mark III] has been what I believe to be a buffer “issue” when shooting through the OVF, which seemingly puts the camera to sleep after taking a series of shots (as few as 5 in my usage) and de-pressing the shutter (if you keep it half-pressed, it’ll stay “awake”). Everything shuts down — I can’t even open the menu — until the write (red) light stops flickering.”

DPReview forum member PrestoPhotographer responded to Pytluk’s post confirming they too were affected by this issue:

‘I have the same issue with the viewfinder ‘sleeping’. Incredibly frustrating when shooting soccer or any fast-moving sport. I’m sending mine back as it’s currently not usable for me. I’ve noticed the card access light going off randomly amongst some other bizarre things as well. I’m set up for an eventual exchange but no clue when they’ll get more stock.’

Pytluk responded with the following YouTube video, showing exactly what both users described: after ten shots in continuous mode, the digital markings on the optical viewfinder (OVF) went blank and shut off until the camera caught back up, at which point the shutter could be released again.

Follow-up posts in the thread confirmed this issue occurred regardless of whether or not a memory card was inside the camera.

We experienced a similar issue with a pre-production camera earlier this year, but have not replicated the problem with two production samples of the EOS-1D X Mark III currently undergoing testing at DPReview. Canon users are reporting front-focusing issues with the RF 70-200mm F2.8

Update: Canon has offered the following official response: “Canon has become aware of this phenomenon, which occurs when focusing on a close subject at 200mm,
and is preparing a firmware update that will be released as quickly as possible.”

Canon may have an issue on its hands as multiple users of its new RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lens report that it misses focus when used at the closest minimum distance. A thread on our forums as well as posts on Fred Miranda state that when used at the longer focal lengths, and with subjects at the closest focusing point, the lens focuses in front of the area under the AF point in use.

DPReview forum member pokesfan posted some tests which he says demonstrate that the lens focuses about 3cm in front of the active AF point when uses at the closest focusing distance while at the 200mm setting.

Tests carried out by users report the fault is most pronounced at the longer ends of the focal range and that it gradually reduces as the lens is brought back to the 70mm setting. More distant subjects also avoid any issues, as it seems to happen only close up.

The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 is said by owners to be exceptional in every other situation, but this will be something that needs attention. Forum member pokesfan says that his lens was sent to Canon to be checked and the service engineers claimed there was nothing wrong with it.

Nokishita is reporting Nikon’s Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct will cost $7996.95

Nokishita might be days away from closing down, but the Japanese site hasn’t stopped leaking information about upcoming camera equipment. In a recent series of tweets, Nokishita reported what it claims to be pricing information of the Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct lens as well as the rumored ‘Z50’ mirrorless camera.

According to Nokishita’s latest report, which is still speculation at this point, Nikon’s Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct lens will retail for a whopping $ 7,996.95. Nikon Rumors has been reporting this price since August 2019, so it’s not unexpected.

In addition to the Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct lens, Nokishita is also reporting what it says will be pricing info for the much-rumored Nikon ‘Z50’ mirrorless camera. According to the tweets, the Nikon Z50 mirrorless camera will retail for $ 856.95 for the body-only version, $ 996.95 for the kit lens version and $ 1,346.95 for the ‘Double Zoom Kit’ version. The kit lenses, according to the tweet, are the Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm F3.5-6.3 VR and the Nikkor Z DX 50-250mm F4.5-6.3 VR, which Nokishita claims will retail for $ 296.95 and $ 349.95, respectively.

Nokishita also reported that the EN-EL25 battery and MH-32 charger for the rumored Z50 mirrorless camera will retail for $ 64.95 and $ 49.95, respectively. Obviously, all of this information is unconfirmed for now, but Nokishita has a good record of being right about this kind of thing, and it seems likely that we’ll know for certain soon enough.

Sony users are reporting issue using 128GB SanDisk Extreme SD cards with a7 III

According to multiple users on the Sony Alpha subreddit, Sony’s a7 III camera is having issues with a particular SanDisk SD card.

Reddit user “shadyashell” originally made a post regarding an issue they were having with their Sony a7 III camera and SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card (Class 3) memory card. In the text of the post, they wrote:

“Everytime I insert the card into slot 1 [I get] the error message ‘Unable to read memory card. Reinsert memory card. Slot 1’ appears. I’ve reset the camera multiple times, formatted the card both on slot 2 and my laptop. Any advice on solving this issue?”

Not long after posting, other Reddit users chimed in and echoed that they too had experienced an issue. Reddit user ‘iamtridluu3’ said “I’m having the same issue. All six cards. Identical 128gb Extreme Pro. I could use it in slot 2 fine. Just slot 1 of both my a7 III and all six cards. Something is wrong with these cards.”

Reddit user ‘dany74m’ claims to have contacted Sony and been told that “[Sony] officially recognize[s] the problem” and “the camera or the card are not defective [it’s] just an incompatibility with the SD extreme V.30 128GB.” Reddit user ‘dany74m’ added “[Sony] said they are aware and they are working to fix the issue with a firmware update in few weeks.”

DPReview contacted Sony regarding the issue. A spokesperson for the company kept it short and vague, saying “our team is currently investigating the claims.” We will update this article if any new information becomes available.

Kodak will lay off 425 employees after reporting millions in losses

Kodak recently disclosed its third quarter fiscal results, revealing that it had a GAAP net loss of $ 46 million on $ 379 million in revenues during its Q3 2017. This marks a sharp downturn of fortunes for Kodak, which saw $ 12 million in net earnings during the same quarter last year. “An overall print market slowdown and rising aluminum costs have impacted our commercial print business,” explained Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke in a release.

Clarke went on to explain that Kodak is, “taking immediate actions to accelerate cost reduction and reduce investments to sharpen our focus as we continue to actively pursue changes to the Kodak product and divisional portfolio.” According to New York Upstate, “accelerate cost reduction” translates to the Eastman Kodak Company cutting 425 jobs.

The quarter had its upsides for Kodak, however, which reports that its Kodak Sonora Plates saw a 24% growth in Q3 and its Flexcel NX revenue grew 2% year-on-year. Overall, Kodak’s CFO David Bullwinkle said the company anticipates generating cash during Q4 2017. “We plan to improve our cash balance through reducing working capital and through cost actions,” Bullwinkle explained, “including focusing investments in technologies most likely to deliver near-term returns.”

Google Pixel users reporting camera app issue

Google’s Pixel smartphones come with a range of innovative imaging technology and currently occupy the number one spot in the DxOMark smartphone ranking. However, shortly after the device launch some users reported a strong tendency of the Pixel camera to produce lens flare, and now it appears some devices are having trouble with the camera app, as well. 

In the Google Product Forum a number of users are reporting that their camera app is frequently crashing, sometimes showing pink and purple vertical lines. It appears the issue is mainly impacting international devices when the phone is in an area with poor signal reception. The error does not occur when flight mode is activated.

Google support staff has been instructing users who are experiencing the issue to clear the cache and data, and factory reset the device. However, none of these measures has solved the problem. It appears performing a soft reset by holding the volume down and power keys is currently the only way to get your device up and running again when the issue occurs.

We are currently testing the Google Pixel XL for our full review and, luckily, have so far not experienced the problem. That said, we hope Google can come up with a quick solution, possibly a software update, to help the affected users.
