Nikon Japan says it’s temporarily ceasing 58mm F0.95 S Noct pre-orders due to demand

01 Nov

Nikon Japan has announced (translated) it’s temporarily suspending pre-orders for its new Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct lens citing greater demand than the supply chain can currently handle.

In a press release published earlier today, Nikon Japan says it has ‘decided to suspend pre-orders,’ according to a machine-translated press release. ‘It is expected that it will take a considerable amount of time to deliver the product because we received many orders exceeding expectations.’

The press release goes on to say Nikon Japan is ‘working to resume orders, but the number of production of these products is limited due to the need for advanced manufacturing technology, and it may take time to resume orders.’

Nikon Japan concludes by apologizing for the inconvenience and saying it will further notify consumers when pre-orders resume.

At the moment, this appears to be a region-specific limitation, as other retailers around the globe still have the 58mm F0.95 S Noct available to pre-order. At the time of posting this, Adorama, B&H, Wex and Calumet still have pre-orders up. Neither Adorama nor Wex list an estimated shipping date, but B&H currently says the expected availability is November 27, 2019 and Calumet expects the first units to start shipping November 7, 2019.

We have contacted Nikon to see if this pre-order limitation will affect any other region. We will update the article accordingly if we receive a response.

Laowa opens pre-orders for new 17mm F1.8 MFT lens, set to ship later this month

21 Oct

Venus Optics has announced the Laowa 17mm F1.8 for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) camera systems is currently available to pre-order and will ship later this month.

The manual lens, which costs $ 149, is constructed of nine elements in seven groups, features a seven-blade aperture diaphragm, has a 15cm minimum focusing distance and a 46mm front filter thread. The 34mm full-frame-equivalent focal length offers a 65-degree angle of view and the lens weighs in at just 172g (6oz).

Venus Optics also notes the lens is ‘drone-friendly,’ due to the versatile MFT mount, lightweight design and its Frog Eye Coating (FEC), which allegedly repels water and dirt off the front lens element.

Below is a sample gallery of images Venus Optics has provided:

Lomography launches preorders for Berlin Kino B&W 2019 Edition film

11 Oct

Lomography has released its new Berlin Kino B&W Formula 2019 35mm ISO 400 film product. The new model follows the company’s previously released Berlin Kino Film, which it described as being inspired by the New German Cinema movement. The new film, Lomography says, offers photographers ‘an upgrade in their freedom of creative choice, no matter if they shoot with 35mm or 120 format.’

The most notable aspect of Lomography’s ‘refined’ Berlin Kino formula is its ability to offer ‘huge amounts of photographic details’ in heavily shadowed and bright environments, the company explains. The film has an ISO 400 native sensitivity but can be pushed to 800, 1600, or 3200 without compromising detail levels or tonal range, according to Lomography.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_4730008925″,”galleryId”:”4730008925″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

The 2019 Edition of Lomography’s Berlin Kino B&W film can be preordered for $ 8.90 USD per roll or in a 5-roll bundle for $ 44.50 USD. The company currently estimates that its new film will start shipping next month.

Company behind Lily drone shuts down despite $34m worth of pre-orders

13 Jan

When the Lily camera drone was announced in May 2015 it garnered a lot of attention for being one of the first drones capable of flying itself and tracking a user while capturing video footage for up to 20 minutes. As a consequence the company managed to secure $ 15 million in investment and an additional $ 34 million in pre-orders.

However, today the founders of Lily have announced in a letter and email to customers that the start-up is shutting down operations because it failed to raise additional funding to start production of its drone. The founders promise to reimburse all pre-order customers within the next 60 days.

“We have been racing against a clock of ever-diminishing funds,” wrote the company’s co-founders, Henry Bradlow and Antoine Balaresque. “Over the past few months, we have tried to secure financing in order to unlock our manufacturing line and ship our first units – but have been unable to do this. As a result, we are deeply saddened to say that we are planning to wind down the company and offer refunds to customers.”

The Lily drone was launched with a pre-order price tag of $ 499 and scheduled to ship in February 2016. Shipping was later delayed until summer and then again to early 2017. In the same time frame tracking drones from DJI, Zero Zero Robotics and Yuneec have all been brought to market successfully.
