Rotolight’s new NEO, AEOS RBGWW flashes output 16.7 million colors

17 Oct

Lighting manufacturer Rotolight has announced updates to its NEO and AEOS ranges of continuous/flash lighting units that add RGBWW LEDs and touch screen controls.

The NEO 3 and AEOS 2 lights use five-color LEDs to offer a mass of cutom color options as well as a collection of 2500 pre-programmed filtration effects. Both units now have a color range of 3000-10,000 Kelvin, while the NEO 3 more than doubles its maximum output from the 1652 lux of the NEO 2 to 4541 lux. Rotolight claims this makes the NEO 3 the most powerful on-camera LED available. The AEOS 2 can manage 9230 lux – a step up from the 5750 lux of the original model.

As well as continuous lighting both units have a flash mode, and they can use their RGBWW LED mix to flash in the same number of colors as they can put out in continuous mode. The NEO 3 can sync with shutter speeds of up to 1/8000sec, and can output a maximum burst of 10,700 lux at 1m – to deliver an exposure of f/10 at 3ft with ISO 100 according to company figures. The 17,800 lux AEOS 2 can manage f/13 with the same settings, and offers the same max sync speeds.

The AEOS 2

Thankfully the NEO 3 uses a rechargeable lithium ion battery, so you no longer have to fill it with AAs. It can be powered via AC as well, of course, and the AEOS 2 also offers both power options.

The units have Elinchrome’s Skyport system built-in for wireless triggering, can produce 100,000 full-power bursts per charge and boast a ‘0sec recycle time’. A new touch screen is said to make operation much easier and a new app allows control of both units and firmware updates via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.

Rotolight has also introduced a new adapter that allows users to use Bowens-mount modifers, while the AEOS 2 incorporates the SmartSoft feature from the company’s Titan models that offers adjustable diffusion, focus and spread.

Both lights are being launched via a Kickstarter campaign, and are due to ship in March next year. The price of the NEO 3 starts at £352/$ 479 while the AEOS 2 starts at £825/$ 1119.

FiLMiC Pro update brings Clean HDMI output to Android, iOS smartphones

10 Sep

Professional smartphone video capture app, FiLMiC Pro, has received a new update that adds the ability to stream a clean HDMI output to external livestreaming and recording solutions.

FiLMiC Pro version 6.12 supports a clean HDMI output over compatible HDMI adapters or over Wi-Fi using AirPlay (limited to iOS devices). You can even use multiple smartphones at once running FiLMic Pro to create a multi-cam setup that can be controlled by a livestreaming program such as OBS Studio or a hardware solution such as an ATEM Mini from Blackmagic Design. When paired with the FiLMiC Remote app (Android, iOS), it’s also possible to control each of the cameras wirelessly for more fine-tuned control.

A screenshot from the above tutorial showing how you can use FiLMiC Pro to turn your smartphone into a webcam with the help of an USB HDMI input adapter.

In addition to livestreaming and recording options, this functionality also means you can use your smartphone as a webcam when paired with an HDMI input device, such as an Elgato CamLink 4K. Output resolutions are limited by the devices being used, but in general, Lightning-based iOS devices are capable of 1080/60p output, USB-C iOS devices are capable of 4K/60p and select Samsung devices can max out at 4K DCI 60p.

FiLMiC Pro is available for both Android and iOS devices for $ 15. The update is free for existing users. If you want to find out more about FiLMiC Pro, head over to FiLMiC’s comprehensive support page.

Fujifilm adds Raw video output, gimbal support and Film Simulation modes to GFX100

30 Jun

Fujifilm has issued firmware updates to the GFX100 and GFX 50 models, with the 100MP camera gaining the most significant improvements.

The GFX100 will gain the ability to output a Raw video stream that can be encoded in Apple’s ProRes RAW format by an Atomos Ninja V recorder. This provides a much wider degree of processing latitude than the gamma-encoded, compressed files the camera saves internally.

In addition, the firmware expands the camera’s USB control protocol, giving more control over the camera’s settings when shooting tethered, and allowing remote control of various camera features when mounted on a drone or gimbal.

Face and eye detection AF is said to be improved, as is the performance of phase detection AF in low light. New focus bracketing options have also been added.

Finally, the GFX100 gains the Classic Neg and Eterna Bleach Bypass Film Simulations introduced since its launch.

GFX 50S and 50R users also gain Classic Neg, along with the original Eterna Film Simulation mode in an update to their cameras. This update also adds the subtle skin-smoothing feature from the GFX 100.

Canon announces the EOS C300 Mark III with 4K/120p dual gain output sensor, modular design

21 Apr

As part of today’s ‘Imaging Unleashed’ virtual press conference, Canon has announced the Canon C300 Mark III, its latest Super 35mm cinema camera with a new Dual Gain Output (DGO) sensor and a modular design based on the same frame as Canon’s C500 Mark II.

If the outside of the Canon C300 Mark III looks both different and familiar, there’s a reason why: it uses the exact same body as Canon’s C500 Mark II camera. This design not only allows for more modularity within the C300 line but also means all accessories designed for the C500 Mark II will also work with the new C300 Mark III. Canon has also added anamorphic desqueeze support for 2x and 1.3x lenses, as well as a user-swappable lens mount accessory that makes it easy to swap out lens mounts without the need to take it to a service center (it comes with an EF mount, but can also use EF cinema lock and PL mount lenses with the optional kits).

An illustration from Canon’s virtual press conference that shows how each pixel on the sensor is split into two different diodes.

At the heart of the C300 Mark III is a new 4K Super 35mm DGO sensor powered by Canon’s new DIGIC DV7 video imaging processor. The new DGO system allows the sensor to capture up to 16 stops of dynamic range by splitting each pixel into two diodes that simultaneously capture two images at different gain levels. Helpfully, this is a completely different ‘dual gain’ concept to the one used by most other camera makers, in which all the sensor’s pixels use one of two gain modes.

These two diodes within each pixel are also used to power the phase-detection of Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which will now work at up to 120 frames per second (fps) with the new C300 Mark III.

Also new is support for Canon’s Cinema RAW Light format, which Canon first announced alongside the EOS C200. The Cinema RAW Light format is a more lightweight version of its Cinema RAW format that captures Raw video data in files as little as 1/5th the size of a standard Cinema RAW file. Canon Europe has a great breakdown of its Cinema RAW Light capture format.

The sensor is capable of recording 4K DCI/UHD video at up to 120fps, as well as 2K at up to 180fps with 4:2:2 10-bit XF-AVC recording. Canon has also included Canon Log 2 and Log 3 support, 12G-SDI output over a single BNC cable, timecode I/O, genlock input BNCs as well as User LUT support for applying custom LUTS in-camera and two CFexpress card slots.

Without the included grip, the modular frame measures in at 183mm (7.2”) for both width and height and 149mm (5.9”) deep with a weight of roughly 1750g (3.9lbs).

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_2469912995″,”galleryId”:”2469912995″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Canon says the camera will be ‘available later in 2020’ with an estimated retail price of $ 10.999. The camera will come with 13 accessories, including a 4.3” LCD monitor, the GR-V1 grip, a BP-A60 battery, a battery charger and more. It is currently available to pre-order on Adorama and B&H.

The ‘KD-K1’ keyboard manages to pack in multiple USB ports, an HDMI output and an SD card reader

25 Feb

Minimizing desk clutter is a seemingly impossible task to achieve on the regular, but you might find yourself one step closer with the help of the Kolude KD-K1, an all-in-one keyboard that manages to pack in not only a full-size keyboard, but also a number of ports, including an SD and microSD card slot.

The KD-K1 reached its funding goal on Kickstarter in just 12 hours and has amassed roughly $ 117k in funding from 895 backers as of publishing this article — over ten times its initial goal. The keyboard effectively combines a USB-C hub with a keyboard to create a simplified solution to all forms of input and output for your computer.

Specifically, the KD-K1 features three USB-A 3.0 ports, one USB-A 2.0 port, two USB-C ports (including one Power Delivery port for charging your connected computer/tablet), an SD card slot, a microSD card slot and an HDMI port (4K/30Hz). In addition to the HDMI slot, the USB-C port can output video as well, up to two 4K/30Hz displays.

The keyboard itself is constructed of 100-percent aluminum and uses chiclet-style keys atop scissor-switches. In addition to coming in both black and white variations, both models feature a white LED backlight to make typing and navigating easier in low-light environments.

Kolude says the keyboard was specifically designed with Apple devices in mind, the KD-K1 does have Windows and Android support as well. Kolude says the keyboard supports the following languages at this time, with more anticipated in the future: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Taiwanese/Hong Kong Cangjie, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese and Korean languages.

The first units are expected to start shipping in June 2020 for the ‘early bird’ backers. A $ 119 pledge will secure your spot in line for a Kolude KD-K1 when the keyboard will inevitably be funded in nine days when the Kickstarter campaign ends.

Aputure’s new LS 600d prototype LED light offers 600W output

18 Sep

Filmmaking gear company Aputure revealed a prototype version of its upcoming LS 600d LED light at IBC 2019 over the weekend, introducing consumers to a model with an exceptionally bright output at 600W. The light is described as the next step up from Aputure’s 300d II model.

In addition to being shorter and wider than the LS C300II model, which Aputure says makes this model better suited for shooting in tight areas, the LS 600d light’s low-RPM fan is quieter than that of the 300d II despite the greater output.

The model has a 720W draw, while its companion controller can be run off a 48V DC input or four 310W V-mount batteries. Assuming the unit is run off batteries, Adorama reports the LS 600d can run non-stop for up to 1 hour and 45 minutes. The light features a Bowens-style mount, as well, for use with light modifiers and other attachments.

Cinema5D reports that the Aputure LS 600d likewise features three built-in effects: paparazzi, strobe, and lightning. The prototype version of the battery and control box will be slimmed down in the final production version of the device, according to Cinema5D, which reports that Aputure hopes to cut the size in half.

The Aputure LS 600d should be available to purchase in or around February 2020.

Rotolight Anova Pro 2 features improved output and ‘unrivaled battery’

23 Nov

Lighting manufacturer Rotolight has introduced a mark 2 version of its Anova Pro circular LED stills and video light. The Anova Pro 2 is the same size as the previous model, but according to the company, the new model features a 70% uplift in brightness, “unrivaled battery performance”, and up to 10,700 lux at 3 feet instead of 6,280 in continuous mode.

Like the previous model, the Anova Pro 2 also operates as a flash unit, and is capable of high speed sync at up to 1/8000sec. Rotolight says the flash mode has no recycle time and that the maximum output has been increased by 250%.

The Anova Pro 2 also has the Elinchrom Skyport system built-in to allow wireless radio triggering and control of the lights. The Skyport receiver has a range of 200m and provides remote access to light levels in flash and continuous modes, as well as color temperature and the built-in CineSFX cinema effects.

Gillian Anderson by Mark Mann Martin Scorcese by Mark Mann

Rotolight says the CineSFX effects—which create various flashing patterns to simulate the light from a fire or a TV, for example—have been improved to give them ‘enhanced realism’ with the help of Batman and James Bond visual effects cinematographer Stefan Lange. The unit also has variable color temperature settings that run from 3150 to 6300K, a CRI value of >96, and a Television Lighting Consistency Index of 91.

Although its rating of 72W uses more power than the original version, it still has the best power consumption ratio in the industry when the output is taken into consideration, says Rotolight. The light can be powered by a V-Mount battery or directly from the mains supply.

The Rotolight Anova Pro 2 will be available next month, starting from £1250/$ 1625/€1400 including integrated DMX, V-lock battery plate, wireless Elinchrom receiver, and 4-piece filter kit as standard.

For more information, visit the Rotolight website.

Press Release

ROTOLIGHT UNVEIL ANOVA PRO 2

Revolutionary LED Studio/location light

Rotolight, award-winning British LED lighting manufacturer, has announced the launch of Anova PRO 2; a pioneering continuous light and High Speed Sync (HSS) flash for creative image-makers. Redefining the standard for professional LED lighting in studio or location, Anova PRO 2 is one of the brightest LED lights ever launched in its class, delivering 10,700 lux at 3 feet. Packed with innovative features for television, film production, and photography, the Anova PRO 2 is the 4th generation of Rotolight’s award winning studio/location light.

The Rotolight Anova PRO 2 embodies the pinnacle of LED technology, designed for the most demanding of professionals. Offering 70% more power output than its predecessor, Rotolight Anova PRO 2 provides the best power to consumption ratio in the industry, as one of the most energy efficient LED panels ever designed. With a mere 72W consumption, Anova PRO 2 reduces operating costs for TV studios, whilst providing unrivalled battery performance on location.

Anova PRO 2 delivers outstanding colour reproduction (CRI>96, TLCI 91) eliminating the need for expensive post production, whilst featuring electronically adjustable colour temperature in both flash and continuous modes (6300-3150K).

“The Rotolight Anova PRO 2 is the perfect light for working in the live television environment. We are able to light people accurately, very quickly, saving us time, mistakes on air and a lot of money” says Wesley Dodd, CEO Celebro Media.

Rotolight are the lighting provider of choice for Celebro, London’s first fully 4K television studio regularly used by global broadcasters such as the BBC, MTV, and the Discovery Channel. As an existing Rotolight customer, Celebro Media were keen to be the first in the world to get their hands on Rotolight’s latest lighting innovation.

“We are very excited to have placed an order for 200 of the Anova Pro 2 lights for our new studios opening this year in Washington, Moscow and Los Angeles” says Dodd.

Due to its powerful output, yet lightweight nature, Anova PRO 2 is also ideal on location, and has become the light of choice for Italian state broadcaster RAI TV, who recently acquired 150 Anova PRO Kits for their ENG production teams.

“Rotolight is a totally unique product, as it works equally well in the studio and the field. As we develop the Live OB side of our business, the Anova PRO 2 was an obvious addition to our equipment list. Having a lighting fixture with such a substantial increase in power output means we will be able to cope with the most demanding of locations or weather conditions, whilst its battery efficiency simplifies our setup. The addition of an RJ45 DMX connection allows us to install them in our studio, at a fraction of a cost with the same professional results” says Andrew Lebentz, Head of Production for Celebro Media.

For television and film production, Anova PRO 2 includes a customizable suite of Rotolight’s award winning CineSFX™ (Fire, Lightning, TV, Gunshot, Paparazzi etc) which eliminate the need for expensive, time consuming legacy ‘flicker-box’ workflows. Designed in conjunction with Stefan Lange, Visual FX veteran (Batman, James Bond ‘Skyfall’, Tomb Raider), the patented CineSFX™ suite has been updated with ‘enhanced realism’ and the addition of a ‘Chase’ FX capability, to simulate the effect of motion on static sets. The newly integrated wireless Elinchrom Skyport receiver enables wireless control of CineSFX, colour temperature and brightness from up to 656ft(200m).

For professional photographers, Anova PRO 2 also features an updated High Speed Sync (HSS) flash capability (1/8000th), with a 250% power boost in flash mode. With zero recycle time, you’ll never miss a shot, making it the perfect choice for today’s high frame rate capable cameras. Anova PRO 2 can be simultaneously a continuous ‘modelling light’ and HSS flash, allowing the photographer to easily acquire focus in dimly lit situations and optimise composition. The unique circular shape also provides a naturally soft, flattering light output, with Rotolight’s signature catchlight effect.

Celebrity photographer Mark Mann (Margot Robbie, Martin Scorsese, Benedict Cumberbatch) said:

“I’ve shot strobe my entire career, and had always been intrigued by continuous light, but never found any that I liked until the Rotolight Anova. The quality of light is absolutely beautiful, it gives you a very filmic feel. Versatile, consistent and reliable, it also looks good on set and I know it will always deliver in high turnaround environments. As a photographer who’s being asked more and more to shoot video and stills at the same time, Rotolight has really improved my work flow”.

Anova PRO 2 is available from £1249.99ex/ $ 1625/1399euro and ships as standard with integrated DMX, V-lock battery plate, wireless Elinchrom receiver and 4 piece filter kit as standard. A wide range of additional accessories and modifiers are separately available. Shipping December 2017, for more information visit www.rotolight.com
