6 March, 2013 – Using the NEX-7 as an M Leica Surrogate

06 Mar

What’s a Leica M lens user to do while waiting for the new Leica M (240)? Put his lenses on a NEX-7, of course, and that’s what I’ve been doing for the past few months while living and shooting in Mexico this winter.

How has that worked out for me? Read Waiting For The New M and find out.

I will be reviewing the IQ260 next week. Watch for a review soon.

26 March, 2013 – Leica M (240) Beta Impressions

26 Feb

I have been a beta tester for Leica for several years, but the timing of the availablity of beta cameras this winter coincided with my being in Mexico, and therefore I was unable to take delivery of a testing sample of the new Leica M due to Mexican customs’ Byzantine restrictions.

But my friend and colleague Sean Reid has been testing the as-yet unreleased camera for a couple of months now, and today provides us with some insights on what we can expect from the new M.

I will do my own hands-on field review in the weeks ahead once I have access to a full production review sample.

Adobe Labs has released updates to Lightroom and Camera Raw with new camera support, including completely revised support for Fuji X-Trans sensor cameras. Great news for Fuji fans.

"Every time I go back to a module I had already seen, I learn additional things.  I have never seen tutorials that have the excellent mix of what the features are,
how to use them, enough of the under-the-hood information
and concepts so that I can utilize the features creatively and efficiently,
and just enough humor to keep the motivation level high.  Wow!"

March Fashion Photography Workshop in LA

06 Feb

There’s one thing that I have noticed from doing my workshops that is quite endearing: I watch the workshop students forge friendships from the weekend long seminar that carry on for months afterwards. I see them add each other on Facebook and continue to encourage each other along their individual paths towards becoming fashion photographers. It’s been really sweet for me to watch this! I see them commenting on each other’s pictures and keeping in touch with one another through skype and email, because they comment about it! Very cool! We all need to have people on our team when we’re starting out. People who we trust to critique our work as we develop as photographers and people who root us on and tell us to keep going, even when we feel like sacking it in and giving up! It’s been a wonderful PLUS to see this happening in my workshops.

This March, in Los Angeles, I will hold another Fashion Photography Workshop. Held at BoxEight Studios in (the now very hip) downtown LA, BoxEight becomes our home for two days of intensive learning. Saturday we’re going to cover how to light beauty using different modifiers strictly for lighting the face and we’ll learn how to position the light for optimum benefits. After lunch on Saturday we learn lighting for fashion. We try 4 or 5 different lighting set ups, going from basic catalog or look book lighting, to showing you some much edgier, editorial lighting. The great thing about Los Angeles in March is that the weather is fantastic! The great thing about BoxEight is there is an outdoor studio which makes it perfect to take the shoot outdoors at the end of Saturday and conquer some outdoor lighting set ups!

Sunday is all about honing your retouching skills. We teach you about dodging and burning instead of using filters and plug ins. We take your work to a whole other level! A much more professional one! In the afternoon, I teach about the business of fashion photography and what it takes to get your foot in the door. It’s a whole afternoon of lecture and Q & A. This is the time when you can ask me anything you have ever wanted to know about fashion photography but were afraid to ask!

You can read about the entire workshop by clicking on the link here. Tickets are selling fast as we posted loosely about it on our launch post. So don’t delay! Come join us in one of the most exciting cities in the world, Los Angeles! And let’s take your work to The Next Level!

See you there!

** NIKON D70s PICTURES USING 18-70mm Kit lens – SLIDESHOW – MARCH 27th 2010 – DSLR CAMERA **

27 Nov

This is a video slide show of some pictures I took with my D70s, which was the successor to the D70. I got this camera a couple of weeks ago as a backup for my D90. I went to London yesterday and thought I would take some pictures and see how this 5 year old D70s performs. I was actually really pleased with its performance. Every picture that was taken was a handheld shot, and I used ISO 200 during the day, and ISO 800 for the night shots. The only lens used for all the pictures was the 18-70mm nikon kit lens. The D70s has been known to shoot 13 to 14 times what it’s been rated, some have even shot over 150000 shots with it and it’s still going. I have to say this camera is built like a tank.

Astronomical Adventures in Tenerife – March 2009

22 Oct

A week in Tenerife doing Astronomy in March 2009, represented as a single night. Using a 24″ Dobson for observing and imaging using an 80mm EPO refractor and an unmodded Nikon D300 DSLR. Movie composed using stills from the Nikon. The video starts with the clouds descending with the falling inversion layer as evening approaches, giving crisp, clear skies just right for observing. We watch the sky darken and then see the Zodiacal Light shining brightly below the Pleiades star cluster. The winter constellations are now on display giving some great nebulae and clusters for imaging in my 80mm refractor, or just a camera lens. As Orion sets, the winter Milky Way is too low to observe and we enter the realm of the galaxies. We also spy Omega Cantauri, an enormous globular cluster, which is breathtaking through a large scope, filling the whole field of view. As morning approaches Scorpius rises bringing the Summer Milky Way with it and a host of bright nebulae. All too soon, the Sun rises over the lunar landscape of Tenerife and we see Mt. Teide covered in snow. Six clear nights out of 7, at 2150 meters above sea level, boy was it cold!!! Can’t wait to go again.

Time lapse of the opening day at Safeco Field, seattle mariners. Shot on a nikon D300, 12/24 mm zoom. In HDR.

23 March, 2010 – Lightroom 3 Public Beta Two Released

11 May

Adobe has today released a second public beta of Lightroom 3. There’s a lot that’s been improved behind the scenes, and quite a few new features – and of course it’s still free – at least until it ships as a commercial release some time later this year. You do not need a serial number or to have owned a previous version of Lightroom.

My colleague Ian Lyons has just published an in-depth preview of Beta Two, and since Ian knows the product just about as well as anyone I know, this is the place to go for a look at what’s new in the download of Lightroom 3 Beta 2.

This site is about the art and craft of photography, and I rarely if ever use it as a platform for social or political commentary. But I can’t help but congratulate the U.S. on the passage of its historic national health care bill.

The U.S. now joins just about every other country in the developed world in having (at least the beginnings) of a national health care program for its citizens. This is a day of significance for the American people, and I for one am very pleased to finally see it come to pass.
