6 April, 2013 – The Changing Magazine Business

06 Apr

I read about a dozen print magazines a month. But I never buy them in a store or receive them in the mail. For the past year or so I’ve been reading them on my iPad instead.

This trend is the most recent and dramatic change to happen in magazine publishing since the start of the Internet. Our friend, magazine publisher Nick Rains,  along with his magazine-publishing colleagues have addressed this challenge with an entirely new product. Have a read of his latest essay The Changing Face of Magazine Publishing to find out how.

"Every time I go back to a module I had already seen, I learn additional things.  I have never seen tutorials that have the excellent mix of what the features are,
how to use them, enough of the under-the-hood information
and concepts so that I can utilize the features creatively and efficiently,
and just enough humor to keep the motivation level high.  Wow!"

Kurv Magazine White Story + BTS Video

29 Jan

The Video

Shot and Edited by: Marty Martin

In keeping with my commitment to stay true to my vision and to continue shooting in a style that is my own, I shot this white story for Kurv Magazine’s spring issue in a way I’ve always wanted to see a White Story.
I’ve done plenty of white stories over the years, but I always sort of compromised here and there because whoever I was shooting for didn’t want to go exactly in the direction I wanted to take it in. In the end, I was always a bit disappointed in the results. But not this time. This shoot, I’m fairly pleased with.

Again, I collaborated with Rodney Burns from Church Boutique in Hollywood, California. I can’t even begin to describe how amazing it is to work with Rodney. He’s on my DVD, I write about him all the time, and yet every time I work with him it feels so magical, as if it’s the first time we’re collaborating and I can’t believe my eyes! He’s THAT good! He pulled these pieces from designer Furne One that truly blew my mind. And he coordinated the clothing to compliment the pieces. I trust his eye completely and just KNOW that my shoots are going to rock because of his amazing taste.

I wanted two blondes for this shoot. I’ve worked with Sarah Deanna before and she’s just amazing. She’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the out! She also is publishing a book soon called Model Skinny. She writes about her healthy secrets on how one can get skinny and stay skinny the healthy way! I love a girl who gives back to our industry in a positive and loving way! I thought Jennifer was a good match for Sarah Deanna because, well ,she’s a stone cold fox as well! Both girls were on point and really knew how to emote for the story. James from Photogenics helped me cast this shoot. It was nice to work with “the old team”, so to speak.

I worked with make up artist Camille Clark from AIM Artists. I’ve worked with Camille many times when I lived in LA and she’s a very talented make up artist. I was excited to work with her again and ended up using her on 3 out of 4 editorials that I shot in LA. Hair stylist Jonathan Mason came on board that day. This was actually the first time I worked with Jonathan and that day we sort of bonded to the point that now when I am in LA, he’s my go to hair stylist. Thanks again to Timothy Priano, owner of Artists by Timothy Priano, for making that introduction!

I used window light and Christmas tree lights behind a silk against a backdrop  as my lighting sources. That’s it! I know, I’m sorry I don’t have some great big lighting set up to break off for you. This is my lighting and how I see fashion shot and I never have liked seeing things over-lit. I’ve said that numerous times. Over and over, I’ve reiterated how I use one light, or “less is more” or keep it simple. Well, I’ve gone even more simple now, using available light from a window or the continuous light from the room we are shooting in as my key or main lighting source.

Of course, I used the Nikon D3 and my 85mm lens for the shoot. I also used my 24mm lens and a 50mm lens as well. I think what makes this shoot really work is the amazing styling from Rodney and the emoting from two very professional models, Sarah Deanna and Jennifer. And me staying true to my vision! More to come and excited to continue to share with you my vision! Keep it real! xoxo

This issue plays around the conceptual universe of Marcel Duchamp. Not his life, nor his works, just some of his concepts.

– the medium, as an intellectual tool which goes beyond its specificity mocking it.
– the work, regardless of its representative and interpretative character.
– “art”, in terms of conventions, as “amorphous” as possible.
– “construction”, in which the work is not it’s purpose, but an excuse.
– interpretations, or rather readings which can coexist despite being seemingly exclusive.
– objects “aesthetically anesthetized,” lapsed in their likely sight complacency; “rectified”, “assisted”, to give them a new –often unusual- significance. As with the choice of “ready-mades”: “based on visual indifference and a total absence of good or bad taste”
– works “definitively unfinished”.
– rrose sélavy, his alter (-) ego.
– chess, optic machines, mathematics, geometry, “artifacts”.
– “mental painting,” “precision painting”, the rejection of any element in which sight can be delighted.

– aesthetics: – text, – blocks, – photographs, + mixed-media, + painting, + illustration.
– the whole magazine, in spanish and english.

(download it. it’s free. and start enjoying summer -or winter-)

Banners from the Art & Law Exhibition:

The project takes its name from the latitudinal circle that divides the globe into north and south, the same circle that was used to draw the U.S. Mason-Dixon Line.
This historically important demarcation remains critical to global trade today, as a home to global economic centers and as a mediator of labor markets and migration.

The composition is constructed from visual references to global trade and labor. An initial interest in the African American Burial Ground in lower Manhattan lead to research on the quilt patterns used for communication in the Underground Railroad, a system of iconic visual communication that was integrated into trade routes.
Its pattern, inspired by quilt design, is populated by a hybrid iconography drawn from states’ flags and emblems as well as the logos of companies with a relationship to the 36 ° 30’ parallel, cumulatively weaving together a history of global trade.

Machinery (Abstract #2) by Paul Kelpe
visual art
What kind of industry does the man holding the levers control in Paul Kelpe’s painting Machinery. There are no hints; the smokestacks emit no smoke and no product piles up on the factory floor. In fact, Kelpe’s mechanism manufactures nothing. He was actually an abstract painter whose concerns were aesthetic. In his paintings for the Public Works of Art Project, he knew that he needed to somehow address "the American Scene." "As they refused to accept ‘nonrepresentational’ art," he said, "I made a number of pictures with geometric machinery." But Kelpe, unlike the many PWAP artists who factually depicted industrial scenes, studied no real-life factories. He created his own independent visual world, reflecting the kind of technological progress of which Americans were proud. The artist thoughtfully balanced large and small shapes, warm and cool colors, to create a harmonious mechanistic vision. A pattern of diagonal brushstrokes on the painting’s surface catches the light to suggest action. The wheels seem to turn with the soft hum of a well-tuned machine.

1934: A New Deal for Artists exhibition label

The shadowed worker in this painting appears to be controlling the structure, suggesting man’s essential role in industry and his ability to create massive, powerful machines. During the Depression, many artists celebrated human achievements in this way, to emphasize the importance of the working class and to boost morale. In 1934, Paul Kelpe worked for the Public Works of Art Project. The program did not accept abstract art, so he incorporated realistic elements such as figures, wheels, and buildings into his compositions. These images were still not "representational enough," however, and he soon gave up trying to please his bosses (Manthorne, Paul Kelpe, Abstractions and Constructions, 1925-1940, 1990).

Master of Rock-n-Roll Couture! Digital Photo Pro Magazine

19 Dec

My Interview and Work Featured in the
Master’s Special of DPP this Month!

I love Digital Photo Pro Magazine. And I LOVE their title for my story. You can only imagine my happiness when they sent me an email requesting an interview with me to do a write up about myself and my fashion photography for their Master’s Issue. You can read the Full Article Here. First of all, the word “Master” sort of hit me sideways. I don’t consider myself a Master yet, but I was very moved by the compliment. It isn’t every day that a magazine like Digital Photo Pro writes me and tells me that they think I’m a master and would like to do a story about me!

At any rate, enough said. I just want to share the article with you. And if you follow my work, it would be nice to pick up a copy of the magazine. If you have not heard of Digital Photo Pro, it is a great magazine for any photographer, honestly.  They write great articles featuring photographers like Indira Cesarine and David Alan Harvey, who also are in the Master’s Special Edition. they share the latest information on gear and technology as well as monthly profiles on photographers that we all admire. Not to mention, it has great business advice and tips for both photographers starting up their new businesses to people like myself who constantly need to stay in the know on the latest business practices. You can subscribe and save if you’re interested in getting DPP sent to you in the mail.

Enjoy the article!
