Astropad announces Luna Display for Windows, turning your iPad into a wireless display for your PC

01 Oct

Astropad successfully funded Luna Display for Mac on Kickstarter in late 2019. The company is back with another project, Luna Display for Windows. The new project was fully funded in its first hour on Kickstarter. Luna Display for Windows allows iPad owners to turn their Apple device into a wireless PC display.

Astropad states that Luna Display for Windows is the only hardware solution available to turn any modern iPad into a wireless second display for a PC or Mac. You can connect your iPad via Wi-Fi or with a wired connection. For a physical connection, you can select between USB-C or HDMI Luna Display units. Astropad promises ‘lag-free lightning-fast speeds’ and compatibility with any Windows or Mac application

Luna Display for Windows is fully compatible with external keyboard and mouse peripherals, full iPad touch gestures and supports Apple Pencil pressure sensitivity. Astropad promises low latency and a ‘crystal clear’ display.

When working on a single display, especially a smaller notebook display, it can be difficult to fit your entire workspace. With a second display, you can instantly and easily expand your workspace, allowing additional flexibility when working. If you don’t need a second display but would like to be untethered from a desktop computer, you can use Luna Display wirelessly to work on your iPad anywhere you can connect to your Wi-Fi network, such as in a more comfortable room in your home or maybe even outside.

In order to ensure a low-latency and clear wireless image, Luna leverages its own custom video compression technology, LIQUID. The rendering system adjusts in real-time to prevailing network conditions to ensure fast performance. Luna Display promises latency as low as 16 milliseconds, which is considerably faster than the 204ms of Windows Connect and 64ms performance when using Apple’s Airplay technology. Further, LIQUID uses GPU acceleration when available to ensure stable performance.

Luna Display requires the use of a small device, which you can plug into an HDMI port (Windows compatibility only) or USB-C (compatible with Windows and Mac). The device’s size varies slightly with the selected port type, but in either case, it weighs a little over an ounce.

Once your Luna Display is inserted into your computer, you will need to open a dedicated Luna Display app on your computer and your iPad. As soon as the applications are running, you’re good to go.

Luna Display for Windows requires Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit, Build 1809 or later. It requires an Intel or AMD processor with 64-bit support that is 2 GHz or faster. As for RAM, Luna Display requires at least 4 GB. Luna Display for Windows is compatible with Intel HD Graphics 520, AMD Radeon RX Vega 3, NVIDIA GeForce 820m or later; or an equivalent DirectX 11 compatible GPU. On the iPad side of the equation, nearly any iPad will work. Luna Display is compatible with iPad Mini 2 (2013 or later), iPad Pro (2016 or later), iPad 5th generation (2017 or later) and iPad Air (2013 or later). Your iPad must be running iOS 9.1 or later and 32-bit devices are not supported.

You can pledge $ 49 USD to support Luna Display for Windows and save up to $ 31 off retail price. Luna Display for Windows is scheduled to begin shipping in May 2021. For additional information and full pledge details, head to Luna Display for Windows Kickstarter project page.

Luna Display now lets you use an old Mac as a secondary display

18 Oct

Products like Luna Display, Astropad or Duet Display have been offering the ability to turn iPads into secondary displays for the Mac for quite some time. However, with its latest macOS version Catalina Apple has integrated this feature into its own operating system, MacOS, making the third party solutions pretty much redundant.

Duet Display has responded to the challenge by making the feature work with Android tablets in addition to Apple’s iPads. The latest update of Luna Display, version 4.0, now brings the ability to use a second and/or older Mac as a secondary display. Luna Display calls this the Mac-to-Mac mode.

Apple’s in-house solution only works with macOS Catalina and the iPad. It is also limited to newer Mac models. This is where Luna Display adds value. In addition to the iPad you can use an old Mac as a secondary display, and it also works with older Mac computers – the main Mac has to run macOS El Capitan or later – and the secondary Mac which is used as the external display can run the even older macOS Mountain Lion which was launched in 2012. This makes Luna Display a good way of making use of an old and unused Mac that might otherwise be collecting dust hidden away in storage.

Luna Display comes in the shape of a hardware dongle that plugs into the main Mac and is available in USB-C or Mini DisplayPort versions. On the software side of things the Luna Display has to run on both machines. For the system to work both computers have to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Luna Display is available now for $ 69. Early adopters can benefit from a 25 percent launch discount. More information is available on the Luna Display website.

Astro HQ releases Liquid 3.0 video engine for Luna Display and Astropad Studio

25 Jan

Astro HQ has announced the release of Liquid 3.0, the latest version of its video engine for Luna Display, Astropad Standard and Astropad Studio. The updated software brings accelerated GPU support with up to four times better GPU performance over the previous version. As well, Liquid 3.0 slashes latency and screen refresh rates for up to two times faster responsiveness.

Astropad is a product that comes in Standard and Studio variants, both designed to transform an iPad into a full graphics tablet compatible with a Mac computer and any macOS app. Luna Display, meanwhile, is a small dongle-based system that turns an iPad into a small, portable second screen for Mac computers.

Both products utilize Astro’s Liquid video engine, which is Astro’s own proprietary technology. The company said in its announcement today that it focused on GPU performance optimization and latency reduction in its latest engine update. Product owners must update both the Mac and iPad software from their respective app stores to use the new engine.

Luna Display, the dongle that turns your iPad into a second screen, now available online

12 Oct

Luna Display, the little hardware dongle that turns your iPad into a second display, is now available to consumers. Luna Display was developed by the makers of the Astropad, an iOS app that turns your iPad into a graphics tablet for the Mac, and started out as a crowdfunding project on Kickstarter.

Luna is available for USB-C or Mini DisplayPort and works through a Wi-Fi connection. The device lets you use your Mac directly from the iPad with full support for external keyboards, Apple Pencil and Apple touch interactions including pinching, panning and tapping.

According to its makers Luna Display can tap into the processing power of your Mac’s GPU, allowing for a virtually lag-free user experience and images without glitching, artifacts, or blurriness which purely software-based solutions are prone to.

Luna Display requires a Mac running macOS 10.11 El Capitan (or later). For optimal performance a MacBook Air (2012 and later), MacBook Pro (2012 and later), Mac mini (2012 and later), iMac (2012 and later) or Mac Pro (Late 2013) are recommended.

The iPad must run iOS 9.1 or newer and should be an iPad 2 (or later), any iPad Mini, or any iPad Pro.

Luna Display is now available for $ 79.99 on the Luna website where you’ll also find more information.

Luna Display turns the iPad into a second screen, adds touch control to the Mac

24 Aug

The makers of the Astropad, an iOS app that turns your iPad into a graphics tablet for the Mac, have announced Luna Display, the first and currently only hardware solution that turns an iPad into a wireless second display for your Mac computer.

Luna is available for USB-C or Mini DisplayPort and works with your existing WiFi. The device allows you to use your Mac directly from the iPad with full support using external keyboards, Apple Pencil and Apple touch interactions including pinching, panning and tapping.

Its makers say that Luna, unlike software-based solutions, can tap into the processing power of your Mac’s GPU, allowing for a virtually lag-free user experience and images without glitching, artifacting or blurriness.

The team behind Luna is funding the project on Kickstarter where you can pre-order the device for $ 69. Delivery is expected for May 2018. The crowdfunding project has already reached its goal multiple times over, so production and shipping should go ahead as planned.

Luna is ‘world’s smallest’ 360-degree camera

09 Dec

As virtual reality grows in popularity, an increasing number of consumer-grade 360° cameras are hitting the market. Latest among them is Luna, a spherical camera that records 360° footage for viewing on desktop or through a cardboard VR headset. The team behind Luna is seeking funding on Indiegogo to cover design and production costs.

Luna features a pair of 190° fisheye lenses, and uses ‘artificially intelligent auto-stitching software’ to merge the captured 2K footage into a single 360° HD video. Finalized videos can be shared on social networks or YouTube, and can be viewed using the Luna app and a VR headset. A sample video reel shows relatively low image quality from the camera’s video mode, but it’s unclear whether this is representative of a final production version of the camera.

Integrated Wi-Fi enables live streaming, as well, and the camera itself is waterproof with an IP68 rating. Luna sticks to any metal surface via a magnetic adapter, and has an optional accessory pack including a monopod, universal accessory adaptor, keychain and docking station. At 170g/6oz and 6cm/2.36in diameter it’s very close in size and weight to a pool ball.

Memora, the company behind Luna, is accepting pre-orders through Indiegogo, where a ‘mega early bird’ unit is available by pledging $ 199. Shipping is available worldwide and estimated to start for backers in October 2016.
