Fotodiox’s new EF to L-mount adapter features AF, aperture and image stabilization support

Fotodiox has announced the release of its new Canon EF to L-Mount Pro Fusion adapter, which offers complete electronic control and communication between the lens and the camera it’s attached to.

The adapter works with both EF and EF-S lenses and converts them to L-Mount mirrorless cameras. It features an all-metal design with chrome-plated brass mounts and features a built-in Micro USB for updating the firmware of the adapter.

Fotodiox uses its ‘Fusion’ technology to add complete electronic communication and control between the lens and camera body, including autofocus, aperture control and image stabilization. EXIF and aperture data is also transmitted between the lens and camera. In the event you’re using a manual lens, the ‘Fn’ button on the adapter can be pressed to turn off all electronic communication between the lens and camera body.

Fotodiox notes continuous AF and video AF aren’t currently supported due to ‘unsatisfactory’ performance, but other autofocus modes should work with minimal issues. It’s also pointed out that some third party lenses, such as those from Sigma and Tamron might struggle with autofocus a bit more than first-party lenses.

The adapter is backed by a two-year manufacturer warranty, comes packed inside a padded bamboo box and is currently available to purchase for $ 179.95 (B&H).

Panasonic updates its L-mount lens roadmap with two new primes, drops the 100mm F2.8 Macro

Panasonic has published (translated) an updated roadmap for its Lumix S L-mount lenses. The updated roadmap adds two new prime lenses and is notably missing the 100mm F2.8 Macro lens compared to the previous lens roadmap, released back in August 2019.

Based on the information shown in the above roadmap graphic, Panasonic will be releasing three prime lenses and three zoom lenses in 2020:

  • 24mm F1.8
  • 50mm F1.8
  • 85mm F1.8
  • Wide-angle zoom lens
  • Standard zoom lens
  • Telephoto zoom lens

No details are given for the focal lengths of the zoom lenses, but based on the infographic, it seems nearly every focal length from around 24mm through 280mm will be covered.

Although no specifics were mentioned in our recent interview with Yosuke Yamane, Director of Panasonic’s Imaging Business Division, he did talk about the importance of working alongside Sigma and Leica to expand and improve the lens options for the L-mount alliance, going so far as to saying the trio is ‘discussing changes to the communication protocol between the cameras and lenses.’

Sigma Japan confirms the release date for its L-mount 40mm F1.4, 105mm F1.4 ‘Art’ lenses

Sigma Japan has confirmed (machine-translated)the L-mount versions of its 40mm F1.4 DG HSM and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lenses, will start shipping on December 20, 2019.

Sigma says the control algorithm for the two lenses has been optimized to ensure full AF drive and body communication functionality for L-mount camera systems.

The two lenses will retail for roughly the same price as their Canon EF, Nikon F, Sigma SA and Sony E mount counterparts. B&H currently has the 40mm F1.4 DG HSM for L-mount and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM for L-mount available to pre-order for $ 1,399 and $ 1,599, respectively.

All-new Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art coming to E and L-mount

Sigma has announced the newly developed 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN ‘Art’ for Sony E and Panasonic/Leica/Sigma L-mounts. The new lens joins the previously-announced 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art as the second of Sigma’s DN, or ‘Digital Native’ zooms designed from the outset for full-frame mirrorless.

The new 24-70mm has a total of 19 elements, including low dispersion, special low dispersion and aspherical glass. Sigma’s ‘Super Multi-Layer’ and ‘Nano Porous’ coatings have been applied to reduce flare and ghosting. Autofocus is driven by a stepping motor and the lens can focus as close as 18cm (7.1″).

The new 24-70 is weather-sealed, features a brass bayonet mount and uses 82mm filters. The L-mount version weighs in at 835 grams (1.8 pounds), with the E-mount version coming in a few grams lighter.

You can get your hands on the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens in just a few weeks. Pricing has yet to be disclosed, but it will naturally be compared against Tamron’s popular 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD, which retails for $ 850.

Leica announces APO-Summicron-SL 50mm F2 L-mount lens

Leica has announced its APO-Summicron-SL 50mm F2 lens, which is designed for the L-mount system. The lens is smaller, lighter and, as you’d expect, cheaper than Leica’s F1.4 variant.

The 50mm F2 has twelve elements; three are aspherical and eight use an anomalous partial dispersion (APD) design to reduce chromatic aberration. Dual stepping motors can move the focus elements from their minimum focus distance to infinity in 250ms, according to Leica. The minimum focus distance is 0.35m (13.8″), with a 0.2x maximum magnification.

The lens is sealed against dust and moisture, and an ‘Aquadura’ coating prevents water from collecting on the front element.

The APO-Summicron-SL 50mm F2 lens is now available for $ 4495.

Leica releases firmware updates for its SL, CL cameras to add L-Mount lens support

Leica has released new firmware updates for its SL (Typ 601) and CL cameras to add compatibility with current and future L-Mount lenses from Leica and other L-Mount Alliance partners, Panasonic and Sigma.

Aside from the vague description that current and future lenses will be supported in this update, no other information is given.

Sigma announces pricing, availability of its MC-21 SA- and EF- L-mount adapters

Earlier this month, at CP+, DPReview got its hands on the Sigma MC-21 adapters, a pair of adapters that allow either Sigma’s SA- or Canon EF-mount lenses to be used on L-mount cameras. At the time we weren’t given details on pricing or availability, but today that changes. Sigma has announced the Sigma MC-21 SA-L and EF-L adapters will be available starting April 2019 for a cost of $ 169 USD and $ 249 USD, respectively.

As we were told at CP+, the SA-L and EF-L adapters can be used with 29 existing Sigma lenses, including 23 full-frame lenses and 6 APS-C lenses from the Global Vision lineup. This brings the total number of supported L-mount lenses to 40, including the 11 DG Art primes and and native L-mount lenses.

Sigma also confirms that data pre-loaded on the MC-21 adapters ensures autofocus and aperture control have been optimized for the supported lenses and says future lenses will hold the required data in the lens itself, meaning no firmware updates will be needed. The MC-21 adapters also support EXIF data transfer and various in-camera correction functions including chromatic aberration, peripheral illumination, magnification and distortion.

Additional features include an integrated tripod socket for mounting larger lenses without tripod support and an internal flocking that’s used to reduce internal reflections.

On the Foveon front, Sigma notes it ‘will aim to [eventually] replace its SA-mount lenses with the native L-mount versions, but until then, Foveon shooters can rely on the existing offering of Sigma MC-21 at a lower price point to ease the transition to the new system.’

CP+ 2019: Hands-on with the Sigma MC-21 SA / EF to L-mount adapter

One of the items on display at the Sigma booth at this year’s CP+ show in Yokohama was the newly-announced MC-21 adapter that allows Sigma lenses to be used on L mount cameras. There are two versions of the adapter: one that accepts Sigma SA-mount lenses and another that takes Sigma’s EF-mount lenses.

Here’ we’ve got an SA-mount version of Sigma’s 50mm F1.4 Art adapted to a Panasonic S1.

Adds compatibility for 29 Global Vision lenses

The company says both the SA- and EF-to-L adapters can be used with 29 existing Sigma lenses, including 23 full-frame lenses taken from the Global Vision range. These lenses span the Sport, Contemporary and Art series. It features a built-in tripod mount, but don’t be fooled by the pair of allen bolts on this example: we’re told this won’t be removable.

Single-AF only, for now

The MC-21 only allows AF-S mode to be used at present. This is likely to be a result of the existing SA and EF mount lenses being primarily designed for being focused by phase detection, whereas all the current L-mount bodies use variants of contrast-detection AF, which may lead to slower, less reliable performance.

Won’t need firmware updates for future lenses

The inside of the adapter features a black flocking fabric to prevent internal reflections occurring within the adapter tube. An LED on the side of the adapter shows whether the attached lens is compatible and whether it needs a firmware update. Sigma says the MC-21 comes pre-loaded with the data needed for the 29 listed lenses supported at launch but that future lenses will contain the necessary data, so the MC-21’s firmware won’t need updating to support future lenses.

SA and EF mount support

Sigma had the MC-21 on show with representative models from its L-mount Alliance partners: Leica and Panasonic. Although there are references to it around the booth, there’s no sign of even a prototype of the full-frame Foveon camera Sigma has said it will make.

As usual, Sigma makes no claims when it comes to Canon’s EF-mount lenses, but they generally work well with its MC-11 EF-to-E-mount adapter.

Leica announces new APO-Sumicron-SL 35mm F2 ASPH L-Mount lens

Leica has announced its new APO-Summicron-SL 35mm F2 ASPH lens, an L-mount lens designed to be used with Leica’s SL mirrorless cameras as well as Panasonic and Sigma cameras as part of the L-Mount Alliance.

The lens features 13 elements in 11 groups, including five aspherical elements. The optical elements feature ‘high-quality coatings’ on the various lens elements to help reduce unwanted reflections ‘to an absolute minimum’ and also feature a hydrophobic Aquadura coating on the exterior lens surfaces. The body of the lens is sealed against both dust and moisture.

As with other lenses in Leica’s Summicron-SL collection, the 35mm F2 ASPH lens features a Dual Syncro Drive (DSD) steeping motor for fast autofocus. Leica says the lens ‘completely travels the entire focus range in just 250 milliseconds.’ The lens measures 102mm / 4.02in long and 73mm / 2.87in in diameter and weighs in at 720g / 25.4oz.

The APO-Summicron-SL 35mm F2 ASPH lens will go on sale in mid-April for $ 4,595 at Leica Stores, Boutiques and authorized retailers.

Sigma to release eleven Art lenses for L-mount along with SA/EF-mount adapter

Sigma has announced that eleven of its Art lenses will be making their way to the L-mount system this year. Soon, owners of the Leica SL and Panasonic S1 and S1R will be able to get their hands on these:

An LED on the adapter illuminates when a compatible lens is attached, and also notifies users when a firmware update is available. Data for the first set of lenses is built into the MC-21 and will be updated automatically when future lenses are released.

Note that the adapter does not support continuous autofocus.

Sigma Announces Art Prime Lenses in L-Mount & Mount Converter MC-21

The new products include 11 Art prime lenses for full-frame cameras in L-Mount and a converter for Sigma’s SA mount and Canon EF mount lenses on L-Mount camera bodies.

Ronkonkoma, NY – February 26, 2019 – Sigma Corporation of America, a leading still photo and cinema lens, camera, flash and accessory manufacturer, today announced 11 of its Art prime lenses will soon be available in L-Mount. Sigma also announced the launch of the Sigma Mount Converter MC-21, which will allow Sigma’s SA mount and Canon EF mount lenses to be used on the L-Mount camera bodies. The expansion of the beloved Sigma prime lens line along with the MC-21 converter will increase the extensibility of the L-Mount system and further Sigma’s role in the strategic L-Mount Alliance alongside Leica and Panasonic.

Sigma Art Prime Lenses in L-Mount

The L-Mount lineup consists of 11 Art prime lenses for full-frame cameras ranging from 14mm to 135mm, allowing Sigma’s award-winning high-performance lenses to be enjoyed by even more shooters on L-Mount cameras. The lineup features high-speed AF and is fully compatible with AF-C mode, in-camera stabilization and in-camera aberration correction. The native L-mount allows for a much more stable feel than using an adaptor. Additionally, the lenses are equipped with a surface treatment to enhance strength, a brass bayonet mount offering exceptional durability, and rubber sealing at the mount connection for dust- and splash-proof construction.

Sigma Mount Converter MC-21

Features:
The Sigma Mount Converter MC-21 allows Sigma’s SA mount and Canon EF mount lenses to be used on L-Mount camera bodies, allowing more freedom of choice for L-Mount cameras from Sigma, Leica and Panasonic. The MC-21 increases the number of interchangeable lenses manufactured by Sigma to be used with the L-Mount system by 29 lenses.
