Tamron developing lightweight, compact 100-400mm F4.5-6.3 lens

Third-party lens maker Tamron has officially announced that it is working on a new tele-zoom lens for full-frame cameras: the 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035).

Thanks to the use of magnesium in key areas of the barrel, Tamron claims the lens is both durable and, weighing in at just 1.12kg, the lightest in its class. The optical design incorporates three low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberration and Tamron’s eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) coating to minimize reflections and flare.

Tamron also included a high-speed Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) control system, which works in conjunction with Tamron’s Ultrasonic Silent Drive focusing motor to deliver AF speed and precision.

The lens will be compatible with Tamron’s 1.4X teleconverter and the Tamron TAP-in Console that lets you fine-tune and adjust focus and stabilization, among other parameters. An Arca Swiss compatible tripod mount will be available as an optional accessory.

If everything goes to plan, the 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD will be available by the end of 2017 in Canon and Nikon mount versions.

September 15, 2017 – Commack, New York – Tamron USA, Inc. announces the development of a new ultra-telephoto 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD zoom lens (Model A035) for full-frame DSLR cameras. The advanced optical design of Model A035 includes 3 LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements for greater aberration reduction and Tamron’s original eBAND Coating for superior anti-reflection performance.

At 39.3 oz., the new lens is the lightest weight in its class[1] and features magnesium material in key areas of the lens barrel to improve weight reduction, strength and portability.

The Model A035 delivers fast and precise autofocus performance and consistently powerful VC (Vibration Compensation) benefits thanks to the high-speed Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) control system that is found in the latest Tamron lens models.

Model A035 is fully compatible with Tamron’s 1.4X teleconverter and the Tamron TAP-in ConsoleTM that enables lens customizations for focus adjustments, VC mechanism adjustments and more. Additionally, an Arca Swiss compatible tripod mount is available as an optional accessory.

This combination of features and optional accessories join to create a lens that photographers everywhere will enjoy using in various shooting situations, including low-light conditions that require handheld operation as well as those where convenient attachment to a tripod is preferred.

3 Legged Thing launches low-cost, lightweight universal L-Bracket

UK tripod manufacturer 3 Legged Thing has introduced a new, lightweight universal L-Bracket that offers full cable port access for a range of Canon and Nikon cameras, and which has a thread on its upright so users can attach accessories such as mics or flash brackets.

The QR11-L is designed to make switching from landscape orientation to portrait quick and easy when using a tripod. It is made from magnesium alloy, to be lightweight while still protecting the camera, and features a large cut-out area that offers varying degrees of access to microphone, headphone and USB/HDMI ports located on the camera’s end panel depending on the brand and model of camera. Each axis has a strap lug and the base rail is shaped to be clamped into Arca Swiss style heads. For storage, the two plates come apart using a supplied tool and the whole kit fits into a drawstring bag for transportation.

The Airdog ADII is a lightweight, autonomous ‘extreme sports’ drone

Helico Aerospace has launched its new Airdog ADII camera drone on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, seeking funds for the sequel to its original Airdog drone launched in 2014. This next-generation Airdog packs both intelligent features and a portable, durable design, the combination of which makes this model suitable for ‘extreme sport’ activities, according to Helico.

The ADII camera drone sports a built-in ‘enhanced’ gimbal system that is compatible with the GoPro HERO 5 Black action camera. This gimbal system includes a trio of brushless motors, as well as an adapter that charges the GoPro while it is connected. The drone is equipped with a start/stop recording function, as well, that is triggered upon take-off and landing.

The main selling point of the Airdog ADII is that it offers hands-free operation through a combination of software and hardware that enable automatic follow modes.

The ADII can be set to follow a specific perspective or remaining locked onto that angle, via a mode called ‘fixed follow.’ The drone also offers an ‘adaptive follow’ mode, tracking a specific subject as they move. Dynamic shots are also possible thanks to a ‘circle’ mode, which causes the drone to circle around a specific subject.

Tracking and precision, meanwhile, are made possible via an array of sensors, including: GPS, gyroscope, magnetometer, accelerometer and LiDAR. The drone is suitable for use in wind speeds ranging up to 30 knots, and boasts a top operating speed of 45mph / 72km/h and a maximum operational ceiling of 11,500ft / 3500m above sea level.

The ADII’s battery is rechargeable and interchangeable, able to power the drone for between 10 and 20 minutes per charge.

The Airdog Kickstarter campaign is offering interested consumers a single ADII model for pledges of at least $ 1,200 USD; shipping to these backers is estimated to start in October 2017 and will be limited to ‘certain’ countries.

Tiny Atlas Solas ‘casual’ waxed cotton camera bag is lightweight and durable

Tiny Atlas Quarterly, a travel publication, has launched a new multipurpose camera bag, Solas, on Kickstarter. The Solas bag is made from waxed cotton canvas, making it both lightweight and durable, designed to be carried as an arm tote, a backpack or a shoulder bag. The Solas bag measures 17in / 43cm high and 11in / 28cm wide, while the accessories bag measures 8.7in / 22cm by 8.7 / 22cm and the lens pouch measures 6.7in / 17cm wide.

Solas is rain-resistant thanks to its waxed canvas exterior; it also features a pair of air-mesh organizer pockets and an internal key leash. The bag’s trim includes vegetable leather paired with metal buckles. An internal protective foam compartment is built-in for carrying cameras, while a padded sleeve can accommodate up to a 13-inch laptop. Additionally, Tiny Atlas says its bag features a cushioned internal frame for further gear protection.

The bag is offered in three color schemes: Natural + Yellow, ‘Color Block,’ and Black. Tiny Atlas has reached and exceeded its $ 14,000 funding goal on Kickstarter, where it offers backers an early bird bag for $ 175, among other pledge options.

Origami Footwear: Lightweight Lace-Free Shoes Wrap & Fit Any Feet

A Japanese designer and Italian shoemaker have taken a fresh approach to athletic footwear, adapting the minimalist art of cloth wrapping to form the basis of a flexible shoe that fits any foot shape.

Masaya Hashimoto worked with Vibram, the makers of foot-shaped FiveFingers shoes (with articulated toes), to create the Furoshiki series of shoes with wrapping soles that fold around feet without needing laces (a simple hook and and loop system).

A specially-engineered gripping system keeps the shoes in place and make it possible for the shoe to perform like ordinary footwear but with less weight and material.

The system has a number of advantages, including more flexible sizing than traditional shoes, easier packing for travel and the ability to skip socks comfortably.

From Vibram: “The concept for this type of footwear was derived from the Japanese custom of packaging items by wrapping them in cloth fabric. Furoshiki is the only sole on the market that wraps around the entire foot. Because the upper is constructed with stretch fabric, it will anatomically fit nicely on any foot type and the hook and loop closure system allows for a quick, easy fit.”
