Star Wars Miniaturfotografie mit Lego

02 Apr

Star Wars?

„Ach was. Echt nicht? Kann nicht sein. Das gehört doch dazu!“ – „Krieg der Sterne? Mir doch schnuppe.“

Richtig. Jetzt kaufe ich mir die Star-Wars-Trilogie*.

Virtual LEGO Blocks: Build with Chrome, Set on Google Maps

05 Feb

[ By WebUrbanist in Gaming & Computing & Technology. ]

build with chrome page

Build with Chrome is the new, fast and simple model-maker in town, and this one lets you create structures faster than digital SketchUp or physical LEGOs ever could.

build lego google maps

Of course, this Chrome Experiment project would not be complete without Google Maps integration, allowing you to deploy your creations around the world and interact with others.

build lego online browser

Architecture seems the most obvious, but infrastructure, ships and other complex shapes are all ultimately possibilities as well.

build lego pirate ships

Like SketchUp (previously owned by Google), the tool set is relatively simple, except in this case the learning curve is even faster, making it possible for anyone to participate with ease.

build lego house architecture

Users can select blocks, change colors, rotate with a key click, drop them into place then keep on stacking, then save or reset at any time. From private estates to pirate ships, anything is possible.

LEGO Architecture Studio: Boldly Monochromatic Block Set

19 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Gaming & Computing & Technology. ]

lego architectural white sketch

A colorless LEGO kit may sound boring at first blush, but consider the spatial advantages of letting form, line and shadow stand apart from the profusion of colors normally associated with their iconic blocks.

lego architecture studio box

LEGO Architecture Studio‘s pigment-free approach is unusual for the company and intentionally so: it is made to create an experience that is more like pencil or pen sketching in three dimensions, a thinking-through-building process without the complications of shades and hues.

Though the all-white block series contains over 1,200 pieces uniformly absent of color, it also comes with a colorful 268-page book that shows aspiring architects (or simply interested kids) what is possible in the world of built environments.

lego color companion book

This companion volume features the work of famous designers and firms including REX Architecture, Sou Fujimoto, SOM, MAD Architects, Tham & Videgård, and Safdie Architects, covering a range of theory and practice, concepts and reality, all from a diverse group of professionals.

lego all white blocks

From FastCo: “At the end of each chapter, the lead architects will all sit around a table with Lego and play with the pieces! Only then is the reader invited to take part in a hands-on Lego workshop exploring some of the theories and concepts explored in the chapter, which can range from exercises exploring symmetry, mass, density, the use of negative space, modules, repetition, and more.”

lego no color kit

The target audience is also ambiguous – the set could be fun for kids, or ideal for teenagers who want to try their hand at architectural concepts and design before deciding on a college major or career path. In the end, perhaps adults will appreciate it the most, or at least best understand and appreciate the aesthetic understatement … then again, children often understand best that a limited palette of props leaves more to the imagination.

Pixelated Masterpieces: 3 Classic Paintings in LEGO Form

02 Jan

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

Classic Paintings Legos 1

Chances are, you recognize these images, even though they’re simply arrangements of a few dozen colored LEGO bricks. Squint your eyes, and three of the world’s most famous masterpieces come into hazy pixelated focus, your memory filling in the details that can’t be rendered in this form.

Classic Paintings Legos 2

Italian designer Marco Soldano interpreted two works by Leonardo da Vinci and one by Johannes Vermeer using official LEGO blocks. “All the children are authentic artists with LEGO,” he says.

Classic Paintings Legos 3

The works, of course, are (from top to bottom) the Mona Lisa, The Girl with a Pearl Earring and Lady with an Ermine. Subtle variations in tone suggest the highlights and shadows, the folds of fabric, the mountain landscape, even the subtle twist of the third subject’s posture.

Classic Paintings Legos 4

LEGO bricks continue to be a favorite medium for designers, who have used them to recreate everything from a 500,000-piece working water-powered hot rod to the entire borough of Brooklyn. See 20 more works of LEGO art (including another LEGO Mona Lisa.)

Lego Blocks + iPad = Classic 1984 Macintosh Computer

24 Dec

[ By Steph in Technology & Vintage & Retro. ]

Lego iPad Classic Macintosh

Technology comes full circle thanks to an iPad and a creative usage of Lego blocks. Oslo-based designers Jason Kinsella and Charlotte Bakken recreated a classic 1984 Macintosh computer with a modern twist, turning the light and sleek tablet into a bulky retro monitor.

The stop-motion film above shows how the technology/toy mashup was created, complete with a floppy disk slot and old school Macintosh logo.

The iPad simply slides in from the side, making the Lego housing a cool-looking place to dock the iPad so you can read or watch a movie.

The project brings Apple back to its early years, emphasizing how the brand has evolved over the past three decades. Of course, the Lego monitor is actually much smaller than the original, since it has to accommodate the comparatively miniature screen of the iPad.

LEGO Hot Rod: 500,000-Piece Working Replica Runs on Air

21 Dec

[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

LEGO Hot Rod 1

This hot rod might not be much faster than a bicycle, but the fact that it runs at all is extraordinary given that it’s made of 500,000 Lego bricks and is powered by air. Australian Steve Sammartino sent out a cryptic tweet asking potential investors to fund a mystery project costing $ 500 – $ ,1000, and the ‘Super Awesome Micro Project’ was the result.

LEGO Hot Rod 3

Other than the Legos, the only components of the car are a set of tires, gauges and a load-bearing frame. Believe it or not, four orbital engines with 256 pistons entirely made with Legos propel the car with compressed air, getting it up to about 18 miles per hour.

LEGO Hot Rod 4

The car could potentially go faster than that, but the creators were afraid of a “Lego explosion.” It was built in Romania before being shipped to Australia for its debut on the road. “It’s a hot rod design, mainly because hot rods are cool,” they add. See it in action above.

LEGO Brooklyn: Artist Recreates Borough with Plastic Blocks

22 Aug

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

LEGO Brooklyn Model 1

Familiar scenes from Brooklyn, from the local flower shop to the train station, are lovingly rendered in pixelated plastic by local resident and artist Jonathan Lopes. Lopes loves BK so much, he has filled his entire 400-square-foot living room with LEGO replicas of his neighborhood – and he does it without altering the bricks at all, working within the limitations of the retail sets.

LEGO Brooklyn Model 2

LEGO Brooklyn Model 3

The obsession started with a Star Wars LEGO model purchased a decade ago, leading to the design of his own creations. By 2011, Lopes had used a half-million bricks to mimic the Apollo Theater, trolleys in Red Hook, Firehouse Engine 226 and a gardening shop on Hoyt Street.

Lopes told the New York Daily News that he works out his ideas while riding on the subway. Some of the pieces, like a four-foot-tall model of the Williamsburg Savings Bank made of 12,000 bricks, go on display around the city, while others are dismantled almost as soon as they’re finished to build something new.
