Leaked government memo claims DJI is spying on the US for China

01 Dec

Drone maker DJI’s security troubles continue to grow, as a newly leaked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) memo claims the company may be spying on the US on behalf of the Chinese government. Per the memo, DJI drones and mobile apps are possibly being used to gather data on critical US infrastructure, law enforcement, and more.

The ICE memo was issued on August 9, 2017, and is unclassified. In it, the memo claims that DJI is “likely” providing the aforementioned data to the Chinese government, an assertion that is “based on information derived from open source reporting and a reliable source within the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) industry with first and secondhand access.”

The claims aren’t a certainty, according to ICE, which says in the memo that Special Agent in Charge Intelligence Program (SIP) Los Angeles has “moderate confidence” that DJI is providing law enforcement and critical infrastructure data to China. However, the memo claims that SIP LA has “high confidence” that DJI is “selectively targeting government and privately owned entities within these sectors to expand its ability to collect and exploit sensitive U.S. data.”

SIP Los Angeles makes some alarming claims about the DJI GO and SkyPixel mobile apps, saying in part that they grab facial recognition data even if the feature is disabled. The collected data, which is said to include sensitive personal info like full names, images and videos, phone numbers, and computer credentials, are automatically uploaded to unspecified “cloud storage systems” in Hong Kong and Taiwan “to which the Chinese government most likely has access.”

The memo goes on to state that SIP LA has “high confidence [that] a foreign government with access to this information could easily coordinate physical or cyber attacks against critical sites.”

Sources of information (SOI) have informed officials, according to the document, that:

The Chinese government is using DJI UAS as an inexpensive, hard-to-trace method to collect on U.S. critical assets … directorates most likely receiving the data from DJI’s cloud are the offices responsible for defense, critical infrastructure, traffic controlling, and cyber offense…

This isn’t the first time DJI has been the source of security concerns. Earlier this year, the U.S. Army issued a memo, as pointed out in this most recently leaked document, that ordered its units to immediately cease use of DJI products over security concerns. Additionally, security researcher Kevin Finisterre recently claimed that DJI threatened him after he submitted a bug bounty report highlighting serious security issues he had discovered with the company’s system.

For its part, DJI has released an official statement on the leaked ICE memo, saying:

The bulletin is based on clearly false and misleading claims from an unidentified source. Through the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery, DJI provided ICE a detailed rebuttal of the report, explaining why the data behind its conclusions is deeply flawed.

As DJI explained to ICE, the allegations in the bulletin are so profoundly wrong as a factual matter that ICE should consider withdrawing it, or at least correcting its unsupportable assertions. DJI further urged ICE to consider whether the source of the allegations may have had a competitive or improper motive to interfere with DJI’s legitimate business by making false allegations about DJI.

The company states that some of the claims in the ICE memo can be “easily disproven,” including with “a simple internet search,” while other claims are said to be “unsupported by facts or technical analysis.”

That said, the ICE memo claims, “Much of the information collected [by DJI products] includes proprietary and sensitive critical infrastructure data, such as detailed imagery of power control panels, security measures for critical infrastructure sites, or materials used in bridge construction.”

DJI is allegedly “focused on targeting” the utility companies that provide drinking water in four big locations: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New Jersey. The memo claims the drone maker is also focused on railway companies located in Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Omaha, the Milan Army Ammunition Plant in Fort Riley, Kansas, and it is allegedly also providing the Chinese government with data to help it determine which assets to acquire in the U.S.

The complete ICE memo can be found here.

Terry Richardson banned by major magazine publisher, according to leaked email

28 Oct

Following a scathing piece by The Times, a leaked Conde Nast email reveals that controversial photographer Terry Richardson has been banned from working with the company’s many publications—including major names like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Glamour, and GQ. The leak comes via The Telegraph, which claims that the email was “circulated within the media group Conde Nast International”, and follows years of sexual misconduct allegations against Richardson.

Richardson has long been one of the photographers of choice in the fashion industry for his ‘raw’ style, this despite the allegations against him. Entities working with Richardson were recently called out by The Times, which asked why the photographer is still ‘feted by fashionistas’ despite being known as ‘the Harvey Weinstein of fashion.’

The leaked Conde Nest email mentions neither The Times’ piece nor the allegations, instead reportedly stating:

I am writing to you on an important matter. Condé Nast would like to no longer work with the photographer Terry Richardson. Any shoots that have been commission[ed] or any shoots that have been completed but not yet published, should be killed and substituted with other material.

The Telegraph claims the email was signed by Conde Nast International Executive VP James Woolhouse.

The publication itself has not made any official comments about the matter; however, a representative for Richardson issued a statement about the report to the Huffington Post, saying:

Terry is disappointed to hear about this email especially because he has previously addressed these old stories. He is an artist who has been known for his sexually explicit work so many of his professional interactions with subjects were sexual and explicit in nature but all of the subjects of his work participated consensually.

Polaroid Moto Mod leaked, straps an instant printer to your smartphone

17 Oct

Leakster Evan Blass has tweeted an image showing two Moto Mods, one of which is said to be a Polaroid instant print camera module for printing photos directly from your smartphone. As with any Moto Mod, this particular module will be compatible with the Moto Z handsets, including the Moto Z Play and Moto Z² Force Edition.

The Polaroid module is a device that connects to the back of a compatible Motorola smartphone to give it extra functionality—in this case, printing small instant prints and essentially turning your phone into an ‘instant camera.’ Blass didn’t provide details about the module, but presumably it would use the same ZINK (Zero Ink) inkless printing technology as Polaroid’s existing instant digital camera.

For now this is just a leak, but it’s not the first time we’ve seen the Polaroid Moto Mod; late last month, two images of the same device appeared on the website Technoblog. So it does appear that this attachment is the real deal.

GoPro Hero6 leaked again: Shoots 4K at 60fps, 1080p at 240fps, and costs $500

Newly leaked photos of the GoPro Hero6 form a Best Buy in Canada. Photo credit: The Verge

Days after the first photo of the upcoming GoPro Hero6 action camera leaked online, showing that the little cam will finally be able to shoot 4K at 60fps, another set of images has appeared after the camera was put up (by mistake, we assume) at a Best Buy in Canada. The photos were sent to tech site The Verge by a tipster who got to see that camera, and the leak reveals two more tantalizing details about the Hero6.

In addition to confirming the 4K 60fps news, the photo shows that the Hero6 will also be able to shoot FullHD 1080p video at 240fps slow motion, and the camera will sell for $ 650 CAD, or approximately $ 500 USD when it’s released.

The Verge is also reporting that GoPro will no longer use an Ambarella processor from the Hero6 onwards. Instead, the new camera will reportedly contain a custom-built processor known at GoPro as the “GP1,” leaving many to hope that this new chip will translate into better battery life and higher performance from GoPro’s future models.

Finally, the last piece of the puzzle is a release date, which was also leaked today. According to Twitter user Konrad Iturbe, who was able to gain access to GoPro’s staging website, the announcement/release date is set for September 28th.

Photo of GoPro Hero6 leaked, will be able to shoot 4K at 60 fps

15 Sep

We’ve already knew the GoPro Hero6 was on the way thanks to company CEO Nick Woodman, who revealed the camera’s existence back in February. But a newly leaked photo of the Hero6 reveals one very exciting feature we didn’t know about: the little camera will allegedly be able to shoot 4K at 60fps.

The leaked photo was sent to Photo Rumors by a reader of theirs, and as with any unofficial leak, it’s worth taking the image with a grain of salt. But if it is legitimate, this is what the GoPro Hero6 will look like in its final packaging:

If the packaging is legitimate, we can see that the Hero6 is waterproof to 10m, takes 12MP photographs, and can shoot video at 4K and 60fps. The current Hero5 maxes out at 4K 30fps, which puts it at a disadvantage when you compare it to cheaper action cameras like the Yi 4K, which shoots 4K 60fps and costs just $ 340.

The Hero6 will very likely cost more than this—even the Hero5 still goes for $ 400—but with more accessories to choose from and a brand name people recognize, it might just convince some Yi fans to return to the mothership.
