Last call: Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra photos

We’re thrilled by the submissions that we’ve already received and are putting out the final call for images to be included in our first-ever DPR community sample gallery. As a refresher, we’re looking for Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and (newly included!) S20 Ultra photos. By submitting your photos for consideration, you’re helping us understand these complex imaging devices better – and your photography will potentially be seen by tens of thousands of your fellow DPR readers.

To be considered, images should be uploaded to your DPR gallery with the tag s20-gallery. We’re looking for full-resolution images without post-processing – straight out of the native camera app is best. You can also rest assured that our gallery terms and conditions apply: you retain your image copyright (more detail below).

Instagram allegedly raked in $20 billion in ad revenue last year

YouTube, the most popular video platform on the Internet, didn’t manage to make as much revenue in 2019 as image-based social network Instagram, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Sources claim that Instagram made $ 20 billion in ad revenue last year compared to YouTube’s $ 15.1 billion in ad revenue during the same time period.

The $ 20 billion figure, assuming it is accurate, is almost unfathomable compared to the $ 715 million Facebook paid for Instagram when it acquired it in 2012. Facebook does not officially disclose Instagram’s ad revenue separately from its other products; the company hasn’t commented on the report. As of 2018, Facebook said that it had more than 1 billion users on Instagram.

At $ 20 billion, Instagram would have represented more than a quarter of Facebook’s 2019 revenue, according to Bloomberg. Facebook has made a number of changes to Instagram since acquiring the service, the most recent being its decision to hide public ‘likes’ on the platform. Sources claimed late last year that Facebook decided to hide ‘likes’ so that users will post more often, boosting ad revenue as a result.

Kodak’s film business saw a revenue increase of 21% last quarter, but overall profit is down

Eastman Kodak has announced that revenue for its film business grew in the last quarter by 21%, offering a rare glimmer of positive news in a generally shrinking market. The growth though is somewhat tempered by the fact that the company made a loss of $ 5 million over all in the same period, and that total revenue was down compared to the same quarter last year.

Much of the company’s business is tied up in the industrial sector with specialist printing and graphics applications, and a deal with Chinese counterpart Lucky has seen it off-loading a printing plate factory in China while securing licence fees from Lucky for the use of Kodak technology. The deal also ensures that Lucky will provide services to Kodak so it can fulfil its own customer demand.

It would be nice to think that the uplift in the film business came from a rush in demand from enthusiast and professional stills photographers through sales to Kodak Alaris, but it is likely that it is the movie industry that is driving that growth. A number of recent big-budget films have been shot using Kodak stock including Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Ad Astra and half of The Irishman – all of which have a run time of between 2 and 3 and a half hours. That’s a lot of film!

Hopefully this success will spur the company on to produce the 120 version of Ektachrome E100 that we’ve been waiting for since the summer.

Kodak Reports Third-Quarter Revenue of $ 315 Million and Growth in Key Product Areas

ROCHESTER, N.Y.–Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: KODK) today reported financial results for the third quarter 2019, including a net loss of $ 5 million on revenues of $ 315 million and growth in key print and film product areas.

Highlights include:

GAAP net loss of $ 5 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2019, compared to GAAP net earnings of $ 19 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2018.

Revenues for Q3 2019 of $ 315 million compared to revenues for Q3 2018 of $ 329 million.

Operational EBITDA for the quarter of $ 14 million compared to Operational EBITDA of $ 9 million in the prior-year period.

The Company finalized the establishment of a strategic relationship with Lucky HuaGuang Graphics Co, Ltd in the People’s Republic of China, including the sale of Kodak’s offset printing plates facility in Xiamen, China, a supply agreement to help Kodak fulfill its customer demand, and an IP agreement under which Kodak licenses its plates technology to HuaGuang to expand the market in China. The current quarter Operational EBITDA includes $ 13 million of license revenue received from this transaction.

Key product lines achieved strong year-over-year growth for the year to date:
Volume for KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates grew by 22 percent.

Annuities revenues for the KODAK PROSPER Inkjet Platform grew by 5 percent.
Revenues for the Company’s film business grew 21 percent year over year for the year to date.

The Company ended the quarter with a cash balance of $ 225 million.

“The Company will continue to concentrate on delivering industry-leading solutions to customers in our core print and film businesses,” said Jim Continenza, Kodak’s Executive Chairman. “Looking ahead to 2020, we will focus on generating cash by growing profitable revenue, making smart investments and eliminating unnecessary spending.”

For the quarter ended September 30, 2019, revenues decreased by approximately $ 14 million compared with the same period in 2018. Kodak ended the quarter with a cash balance of $ 225 million, an increase of $ 27 million from the June 30, 2019 cash balance of $ 198 million when adjusted for the assets associated with Kodak’s offset printing plates facility in Xiamen, China being reported as assets held for sale. The current quarter revenues and Operational EBITDA include $ 13 million of license revenue related to the HuaGuang Graphics Co. Ltd transaction.

“We have strengthened our financial position by eliminating significant interest costs with the transactions completed earlier in the year,” said David Bullwinkle, Kodak’s CFO. “For the year to date we have delivered growth in SONORA Process Free Plates, PROSPER Inkjet annuities and our film business. We plan to build on those successes and drive further cost efficiencies to help achieve our goal of generating cash.”

NYC’s iconic 101 Park Avenue skyscraper was turned into a giant camera last month

Photographer Brendan Barry, founder and director of Positive Light Projects and creator of numerous unusual cameras, recently transformed the 46th floor of NYC’s 101 Park Avenue skyscraper into a massive camera obscura. The camera was part of the larger Skyscraper Camera Project installation that was live from May 13 to 16 in the iconic Manhattan tower.

Barry has crafted different types of cameras out of a variety of unexpected materials, including a medium format camera built in a pineapple, a 4×5″ camera that incorporates a log and a 35mm ‘butternut squash camera.’

According to the CBS affiliate WLNY, Barry gathered with 20 photography students on Saturday, May 11, to blackout 160 windows in the 46th floor of 101 Park Avenue. Lenses were installed in the dark space, enabling the team to project large images onto screens inside of the skyscraper. Below is a short feature WLNY created on the project:

The project was conceived by Favorite Child Creative founder and director Nicholas Kalikow, according to The Phoblographer. The 46th floor of the skyscraper was available during that time, offering a 360-degree view of the Manhattan skyline and the unique opportunity for this installation.

During the workshop, Barry and participants produced what may be the largest analog photographs of New York City; they measure up to 45″ x 93″. The photos were developed in an on-site darkroom. In addition to transforming the floor into a large camera, the team also created a functional camera replica of the skyscraper.

DxOMark report reveals just how far smartphone cameras have come in the last 5 years

DxOMark chart shows that overall scores for smartphone cameras have steadily improved over the last 5 years.

If you’re looking for the most drastic and impressive improvements in the world of imaging, the (sad?) fact is, you’ll want to look at smartphone manufacturers. And this is what DxOMark highlights in a fascinating retrospective titled “Disruptive technologies in mobile imaging” that looks back on 5 years of testing smartphone cameras.

Not that the Sonys and Nikons and Canons of the world haven’t made improvements—and who knows when the next generational leap in image sensor technology will take place—but as the saying goes: necessity is the mother of invention. Given the size limitations of our ever-thinner and lighter smartphones, its phone manufacturers who have had to be most creative when it comes to improving image quality.

That, in a nutshell, is what DxOMark breaks down in its retrospective, taking a close look at everything from how smartphones have improved their ability to eliminate noise without losing texture, to exposure improvements, autofocus, video stabilization, zoom, and the recent advancements in bokeh simulation.

Exposure is one of the areas that has seen drastic improvements. These images were captured at just 1 Lux, showing how the 808 PureView falls far short of the iPhone 5s, which in turn falls significantly short of the Galaxy S7 “thanks to better tuning and noise reduction.”

The area where smartphone cameras seem to have improved most is in their ability to toe the line between decreasing noise and maintaining texture. Without simply increasing the size of the image sensor, this is a difficult balance to strike if you’re using just image processing, so newer phones take care of this in three ways:

  1. Optical image stabilization to allow for longer hand-held exposures
  2. Temporal noise reduction (TNR) that combines image data from multiple frames
  3. Multiple camera modules (currently dual, maybe soon triple)

These techniques have helped manufacturers make huge leaps forward in the past 5 years:

This side-by-side comparison shows just how much better the iPhone X is at avoiding and cleaning up noise than the iPhone 5s. But even the iPhone6, which used the same camera module as the 5s, benefitted greatly from improved software.
But the iPhone X isn’t even the best at this trick. Here it is compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Google Pixel 2, and Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

DxOMark’s conclusion after sharing all of this data is unsurprising, and one of the reasons why we’re keeping such a close eye on the newest smartphone camera tech:

We can see that camera hardware and image processing have been evolving alongside each during the past 5 years, and at a much faster pace than in the “traditional” camera sector.

DSLRs and mirrorless system cameras are still clearly ahead in some areas, but in terms of image processing, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and the other players in the DSC market are behind what Apple, Samsung, Google, and Huawei can do. Thanks to their hardware advantages, the larger cameras don’t actually need the same level of pixel processing as smartphones to produce great images, but there is no denying that the performance gap between smartphones and DSLRs is narrowing.

This vlogger is the guy behind last week’s Canon G7 X Mark III hoax

Italian vlogger and designer Breccia, telling his audience to Google Canon G7X Mark III and let him know if they see anything… suspicious.

Last week, much of the photography blogosphere went nuts when a series of “leaked” images purported to show a not-yet-announced Canon G7 X Mark III. The high-res photos immediately spread like wildfire, spurred on to even greater sharability because they seemed to show Canon was planning to put 4K video into the little compact camera.

There’s just one problem: they were 100% fake. And now we can be pretty much certain that the creator of the fake images is Italian vlogger and graphic designer Breccia.

Here are the images Breccia “leaked” to the photography press:

We decided not to share the “leaked” images on DPReview, as several members of the staff pointed out that they looked like digital renders with several unlikely design choices… even the font wasn’t correct. Sure enough, within 24 hours the photos had been outed as fake, not just because of the unlikely design, but because the “photos” on the LCD screen were grabbed from the Royalty Free photo sharing website Unsplash.

But it wasn’t until this morning that Canon Rumors was able to identify Breccia as their creator, pointing to a vlog posted yesterday in which the YouTuber tells his audience to Google “Canon G7X Mark III” and drop him a comment if they see anything “suspicious.” That, by itself, isn’t exactly iron clad proof, but if you look at the fakes themselves, you’ll see he actually signed them:

This isn’t the first time Breccia has pulled a fake “leaked photos” stunt like this. According to CR, he was also behind a Google UltraPixel hoax from September of 2017, and a PS4 Slim hoax before that. The leaks are supposed to showcase his skill as a graphic designer, and possibly earn him some work… even if they do simultaneously earn him the ire of (in this case) hopeful Canon shooters.

Adobe will release the last update to Lightroom 6 ‘towards the end of the year’

The countdown to the end of Lightroom as a standalone product is officially ticking, and the deadline is drawing near. Earlier today, Adobe released a fresh compatibility update for Lightroom 6, but in addition to adding support for cameras like the Nikon D850 and Fuji X-E3, Adobe also answered a burning question in the release notes: Is this the last upgrade of Lightroom perpetual product?

The answer, it seems, is no… but that last upgrade will arrive “towards the end of the year.” Here is Adobe’s answer in full:

As we align our investments in the direction of supporting our subscription-based products, the last version of Lightroom 6 will be coming out towards the end of the year. If there is a camera not supported in Lightroom 6, you can use the DNG converter before importing your images into Lightroom 6.

Once that final upgrade goes live, Lightroom 6 will become an ‘unsupported’ product, and if you intend to keep using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom you’ll either have to subscribe to CC or deal with the less-than-ideal workflow described above… while you can. It might not take too many operating system upgrades before unsupported LR6 breaks entirely.

The Last Portrait: A moving tribute to a friend and neighbor

Photographer Jared Polin of Fro Knows Photo recently put together an incredibly personal photo story—a project he’s calling “one of the most powerful photo/video projects we’ve ever done.” The story features Arty, Jared’s neighbor of several years who was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

For Jared, Arty’s diagnosis struck a very personal note.

“When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it reminds me of my mom,” he explains in the video. “Because she passed away from cancer and I dealt with it in a different way from a lot of people, I chose to hide behind the camera.”

He told his mom’s story as a way to “show the good with the bad,” and as he got to know Arty and connect with him, Jared saw an opportunity to tell another story—to capture this man’s life for his friends, his family, and even complete strangers because almost everybody has been touched by this disease in some form or fashion. The video above and the photographs below were Jared’s way of capturing Arty, of writing down his personality in pixels and ink.

Behind the scenes with Nat Geo and ‘The Last Honey Hunter’

This month, National Geographic Magazine ran a long piece on the Kulung culture in Nepal, detailing the dangerous work of so-called ‘honey hunters’ as they set about harvesting large quantities of psychotropic honey. The process is harrowing, requiring hunters to scale large rock faces using ropes and little else, subjecting them to stings by the world’s largest honeybees and, if they’re not careful, certain death.

Accompanying the editorial is a gallery of images taken primarily by photographer Renan Ozturk, one of the subjects of a newly released behind-the-scenes video (above) showing the honey hunters in action, as well as the lengths Ozturk went to photograph them.

At about 9 minutes in length, the video is a short but raw look at the process and all the work that went into capturing this incredible photo essay. Enjoy.
