Narwhals are famous for their long ivory tusks, which reach lengths of up to nine feet. Documentary filmmaker Adam Ravetch and Fisheries and Oceans Canada used video captured by drones to discover a previously unknown use for the tusk: it’s used to tap and stun fish before eating them.

Graphic designer Jessica Hische has developed a tool to help creatives respond to requests for work. Made with designers in mind, photographers who are frequently asked to work ‘for exposure’ or very little pay might find it appealing too. The choose-your-own-adventure style tool helps you build a letter based on the client and the proposed budget – none, very low or good. It will also help you negotiate other tricky situations like an ambiguous timeline or very quick turnaround.

Hische’s tool creates a letter that’s polite but firm, and more than just saying ‘no,’ aims to inform the asker why creative professionals must insist on being paid for their work. It also offers terms for taking on no-budget projects for charities and friends.

There’s no peace quite like death, a fact that seems to have inspired this coffin-shaped, sensory-dampening hood encouraging you to “say goodbye to everything” no matter how chaotic your environment may be. The ‘Wearable RIP’ fits around your head, with padding for your shoulders and a kangaroo pocket for your hands, so you can get some (hopefully not eternal, just yet) shuteye, even in airports or on the bus.
What kind of burial do you want? That’s a serious question, because the hood will give you three options that change the type of music that auto-plays when you lean back enough to activate the sensor behind your head. Select the glory of a burial by fire, go deep into the silent earth, or float with the echo of the ocean in your ears.
Designers Ting Wu and Yu Ting Chang want you to “cut down the connection between you and reality,” burying yourself in a world of your own choosing. There’s some heavy philosophy in their description of the project: “‘Lived-body’ is the alive body that you can perceive; ‘body as image’ is just the object, the shape of the body. If you can perceive the object, does that mean the object is alive to you? In contrast, if you can’t perceive someone, is he/she still alive?”

Solving a series of long-standing issues associated with taking out the typical fast food trifecta, this clever carrying case is a useful alternative to Happy Meal boxes, bags and cupholders that work better for cars than people traveling on foot or by bike.
The solution is more subtle than it might first appear – yes, it solves the timeless question of how to hold a drink as well as a meal, but it also separates out the warm foods (french fries and hamburger above) from the cool drink (soda or shake suspended below), then unfolds into a ready-to-eat spread. Thin cardboard makes the entire container easy to collapse as well.
Customers can hold the package in their hand or slip it over the handlebars and continue cycling unencumbered. Targeted initially toward markets in two bicycle-friendly cities (Copenhagen, Denmark and Medellin, Colombia), the company is also looking to give these a go in Amsterdam, Holland and Tokyo, Japan.
For now, it is a trial redesign that is as much about marketing toward young urban bikers, but if the packaging is sound there seems to be no obvious reason for McDonalds not to ultimately deploy these around the world (and for other fast food chains to follow suit).

The website Lenstag bills itself as a tool for helping photographers find lost or stolen gear, but now it’s branching out to help people find images used without permission, too. Lenstag maintains a database of a user’s lens, camera body and accessory serial numbers and then trolls the web looking for photos posted with those registration numbers in the EXIF data of a photo. Reuters photographer Kai Pfaffenbach found himself unexpectedly on the other side of the lens at the IAAF World Championship Men’s Shot Put Finals. His photo of Germany’s David Storl was used as evidence in a decision that overturned a ‘foul’ call and awarded the athlete a gold medal. When it was called into question whether Storl stepped outside of the ring in his attempt, Pfaffenbach discovered that his remote camera clearly showed Storl’s attempt to be fair.
