Video: Drone operator helps rescue fisherman he saw being attacked by a shark

Matt Woods was relaxing on his balcony in Bondi Beach, Australia, when he decided to launch his DJI Mavic 2 Zoom drone and capture some footage. To his horror, he discovered a lone spear fisherman in the water using a speargun to ward off an aggressive mako shark. The ordeal lasted 30 minutes, until help arrived.

Woods, 36, took off from his beachside balcony around 4:00 pm. He expected to capture some scenic footage of the swimmers and surfers that frequent the beach on a daily basis. Occasionally he would spot whales but up until that moment, he hadn’t witnessed a shark.

‘I spotted the shark straight away as there was a big bait ball of fish and as I got closer I could see it was also circling the diver in the water,’ Woods revealed to the UK’s Daily Mail. ‘The diver was fending the shark off and poking it with his spear gun. The shark then went after his float that is attached to the diver. He was charging it and trying to bite it, thrashing it about.’

Instead of being a helpless bystander, Woods took action. He grabbed his girlfriend’s cell phone and alerted nearby lifeguards to the conundrum before he resumed filming the battle. After clearing swimmers close to the shore from the water, lifeguards arrived to the scene on jet skis to rescue the beleaguered swimmer – roughly 30 minutes after Woods’ initial phone call.

‘I felt as if we helped as best we could,’ he revealed. ‘We got on the phone to the lifeguards straight away… while I stayed over the shark on my drone the whole time so we could guide them in. I was pretty happy once the lifeguard came out and I could see the diver had managed to scramble onto the rocks and reef.’

Woods went out to the scene after the ordeal and attempted to locate the diver and show him the footage. He wasn’t able to find him. While there have only been nine recorded attacks from mako sharks on humans, since 1580, experts say the sharks are sometimes attracted to fishermen, in particular, if they’re carrying dead fish.

There are many great quotes about the relationship and importance of light to photography.  You’ve read how the very word photography is rooted in the Greek terms meaning “writing with light.”  You likely have heard of groups of photographers like Canon’s “Explorers of Light.”  Yet while we focus attention on the component of light, we sometimes fail to recognize the importance of areas without light, the shadows in a photograph.  As there can be no yin without yang, photography also must “embrace the Tao”, the duality of both light and shadows in photography.

Let’s explore the relationship in this article on shadows in photography.

You find what you seek

Beginning photography students are taught to see and seek the light.  Sometimes they fail to realize that to better see the effects of light, it can sometimes be easier to look at the shadows.

We use terms like hard and soft to describe the quality of light when what we are really describing is the line between light and shadow.  A sharp delineation between light and shadow, that’s what we call hard light.  A very gradual transition between the two and that’s soft light.  We need to look at both light and shadow to fully understand.

As with many things, you will begin to see…really see…what is there once you start to look for it.  Taking your camera out with the express intention of capturing shadows in photography is a great way to seek and see the light.

Shadow seasons and times

It’s late November as I write this, and at my latitude – about 43-degrees north – we’re getting into winter. The days are growing shorter, and the shadows are growing longer. With the winter solstice approaching on December 21, the sun will be the lowest in the sky for us in the northern hemisphere. For my friends down under in the southern hemisphere, that same day will be the longest and the middle of summer.

Of course, the time of day plays a big part in that too, regardless of the time of year. One reason photographers favor early morning and late afternoon/evening is not just for the golden hour, but for the low light angle and more dramatic shadows.

Yes, you will find shadows at any time of the day, but their size and characteristics will vary with time of day and time of year.

Then there’s artificial light. You can’t control the sun, but you can control artificial light sources. You can control their intensity, color, and direction, and with the use of modifiers, the quality of shadows.

With regard to shadows, remember that the hardness/softness of shadows is a factor of the size of the light source relative to the size of the subject.

A softbox makes for soft shadows because it increases the size of the light source relative to the size of the subject. You will also get softer shadows when you move the light closer to the subject (which also increases its relative size).

All photos contain both light and shadow. Seeing it, and learning to best use it, is the key.

The shadow shows

Looking at a photo, studying the shadows can tell you about:

Direction

Look at a photo and study where the shadows are falling.  The light source will be exactly opposite from the directions the shadows fall or from the darkest side of the subject.

Shape and form

The way light and shadows fall, give us clues as to the shape of a subject. Photography is a 2D medium we use to capture a 3D world, and light and shadow help add depth, dimension, and form to subjects.

Photograph an egg with the light source directly coming from the same direction the camera is pointing, and you will see a two-dimensional oval with little clue as to the depth of the egg.

Now move the light to a 45-degree angle, and the shadow will begin to give evidence to the true shape of the egg.

Move the light 90-degrees to the camera direction, and your perception changes again.

Whatever the subject, the direction of the light, and the areas in shadow are our clues to interpreting our subject.

Texture

Often we want to control how textured a subject looks in our photo. For some subjects, we may wish to emphasize the texture as much as possible. Hard light raking the subject from the side, behind, above, or below the subject will increase apparent texture by creating both lit and shadow areas.

Sometimes we want minimal texture, perhaps when making portraits. Large light sources like softboxes or nature’s lightbox, the sky on an overcast day, will soften shadows and minimize texture.

Mood and drama

What is in light and shadow, what is bright and dark, how and where the shadows fall – all of these work together to communicate the mood of an image.

This is another example of learning to see how both light and shadow work together.

We can also use light and shadow as we make portraits.

Standard three-point studio lighting can make for a pleasing portrait. Still, when we want to emphasize shape, form, texture, or create an edgier, moodier portrait, we will want to look at more dramatic light and, in particular, how light and shadow interplay.

If you have worked much with monochrome photography, you may know that one reason for choosing it over color photography is that without the added distraction of color in the image, a monochrome image can be more about the lines, texture, and tones in the photograph.

When doing shadow photography, you may also be looking for an emphasis on those same things. So, if you are unaccustomed to making monochrome images, you may wish to give it a try when doing shadow photography as the two techniques often complement one another.

All photographs will have areas of light and shadow.

A good photographer will pay attention to how both work together to enhance their image.  Sometimes, however, instead of simply having shadows be a component in your photo, you may want to try making shadows THE subject – the main focus of your image.

I said that you find what you seek, and going out with the specific mission of capturing shadows in photography is a great way to learn to see shadows better and understand light.

Go out with the intent of taking shadows in photography and you’ll find some interesting compositions.

So now it’s all yours… get out there with your camera and go on a shadow hunt.  You’ve always heard that photographers should seek the light.  “Mr. Kodak,” George Eastman obviously knew a thing or two about photography and he said –

Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.  – George Eastman

I heartily endorse his advice.  However, I would also suggest that while you learn about the “Yang,” the light, you do not overlook the “Yin,” the shadows.  They are immutably entwined, two sides of the same coin, both to be, to use Eastman’s words, embraced, admired, loved, and known.

To practice capturing shadows in photography will help you become a better photographer.  When you see the shadows, you will also see the light.

Facebook explains how its AI helps Instagram users discover new images

In a new technical post on its Artificial Intelligence blog, Facebook details the technology that determines which images Instagram users see in the platform’s Explore tab. According to the company, it had to develop ‘novel engineering solutions’ in order to select a relatively minuscule number of recommended images, videos, and Stories out of the billions of options each time the Explore tab is opened.

Instagram’s Explore tab is found by tapping the magnifying glass icon within the service’s mobile app. The content presented within this tab is a small selection chosen from the billions of images and videos uploaded by users. Instagram uses machine learning (ML) to determine which content is most relevant to the user, helping them discover the types of images and videos they’re most likely to care about.

Facebook explains in its new post that Instagram’s Explore tab is powered by a three-part ‘ranking funnel’ system that is capable of making 90 million model predictions in a single second. Engineers developed multiple systems to ensure that Instagram’s Explore recommendations are ‘both high quality and fresh,’ among other things.

Facebook explains:

After creating the key building blocks necessary to experiment easily, identify people’s interests effectively, and produce efficient and relevant predictions, we had to combine these systems together in production.

The overall recommendation system first engages in what Facebook calls Candidate Generation, which determines the accounts (‘seed accounts’) an Instagram user may be interested in based on the accounts they already follow. Using these seed accounts, the AI then uses embedding techniques to find other accounts similar to the first batch it found.

Using this entire batch of accounts, Instagram’s system then determines which images and videos those users engaged with (likes, shares, etc.), as well as the content they posted. Thousands of candidate posts are identified for each average person using the platform, according to Facebook.

Once the candidates are identified, the system takes 500 of them and ranks them using a three-part ranking infrastructure. The first pass in this ranking system uses a distillation model to select 150 of the highest-quality posts from the 500 candidates.

The second pass utilizes a lightweight neural network to pick 50 of the highest-quality posts from the batch of 150. Finally, the third and final pass uses a deep neural network to pick 25 candidates that are both most relevant to the user and of the highest quality. Those 25 candidates appear on the first page of the Instagram Explore tab.

The selection process isn’t quite as simple as it sounds. Facebook explains that its system predicts which individual actions users will take on any given post, such as whether they’ll ‘like’ or share it — or, alternatively, whether they’ll have a negative response, which is something like choosing to ‘see fewer posts’ like the one they were recommended. The system can be designed to give more weight to certain predicted actions than others.

Instagram’s Explore tab factors in the intention of showing users posts related to new interests in addition to their existing interests, according to Facebook, which explains:

We add a simple heuristic rule into value model to boost the diversity of content. We downrank posts from the same author or same seed account by adding a penalty factor, so you don’t see multiple posts from the same person or the same seed account in Explore.

The ultimate goal of Instagram’s Explore tab is helping users find new, relevant, and interesting content from other users. Facebook says that its engineers are ‘continuously evolving’ the discovery tab.

Open-source Intervalometerator helps DIYers create inexpensive remote time-lapse DSLRs

Sydney-based coder Greig Sheridan and his photographer partner Rocky have introduced Intervalometerator, an open-source intervalometer designed for deploying inexpensive remote time-lapse systems involving Canon DSLRs, Arduino and Raspberry Pi hardware. The system is ideal for DIYers seeking an inexpensive alternative to existing remote time-lapse systems.

According to the Sheridan’s ‘Intvlm8r’ website, the open-source intervalometer system can be used with a battery and solar panel remotely, in addition to ‘on-grid’ for less remote setups. The intervalometer was designed for the Canon 6D, 60D, and 600D models, Sheridan told PetaPixel, but the duo hopes ‘that over time other models and brands will be tested and found compatible too — it relies on gPhoto to talk to the camera.’

The Intervalometerator can be set up with Web access for remote control and is fully configurable, enabling users to choose the full camera settings, select the time/day when images are captured and interval. The software’s interface, a demonstration of which is available here, includes information on battery level, captured images, remaining storage, the time and date of the last image, as well as when the next shot will be captured and the camera hardware in use.

In addition to having a low power requirement of less than 1mA, the Intervalometerator can also automatically recover in the case of a temporary power loss. Sheridan estimates the Intervalometerator’s cost, excluding the protective housing, mount, and camera, at around $ 242. That is substantially cheaper than competing commercially available systems; the Titan2 Remote time-lapse box with solar power for DSLRs, for example, costs $ 4,700 USD.

Sheridan details the project on his blog and has shared the code on Github.

Free online tool helps photographers visualize and compare aspect ratios

Developer and photographer Christopher Kalafarski has created a free tool that enables users to compare and preview various aspect ratios with their own images. Unlike comparisons in an application like Lightroom, Kalafarski points out that his ratio.party tool is simple to use and offers a wide range of sample ratios.

Users can add their own image to the tool by dragging and dropping them onto the Web page. Ratio.party features an input format box at the bottom, which can be clicked to cycle through multiple format options. Users can enable and disable horizontal and vertical lines, and click lines to crop the image at them.

Though the tool works on mobile devices, Kalafarski explained in a Reddit post that he designed ratio.party for desktop browsers. The tool operates locally in the browser, meaning user images are not uploaded to a server.

This simple web tool helps you find the lenses you like best

If you’re having trouble deciding what lens to buy next, and diving into the technical details isn’t helping (we have no idea what that’s like… but we hear it happens), a simple web tool called What the Lens might be able to help. Created by photographer Willie Chik, the tool reveals your lens preference by having you pick your favorite photos from a gallery.

The site pulls images from 500px, automatically sorting them by brand—so you can use What the Lens to find your favorite Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sony FE, Sony A, Olympus, or Panasonic lens. Then, once you’ve selected your brand, you can further break down the gallery by category—selecting either Landscapes, Macro, Animals, Travel, People, and City.

Finally, once you’ve done all that, it’s time to pick your favorite 20 photos. You can scroll down as far as you’d like, loading more shots until you find 20 you really like, and once you’re done the site will reveal what lens suits you best. In my case, after selecting 20 canon portraits, it came up with this:

Of course, we prefer a more technical approach here at DPReview… one that’s not liable to be skewed by your post-processing preference, what kind of landscapes you like best, or the variety of other issues that come up when you really start to think about this tool as a buying guide.

But if you’re looking for a simple and possibly even fun way to determine what lens deserves to go next on your to-buy list, What the Lens might be worth a go. Just be careful with the “People” category… that one can get a bit not safe for work (NSFW).

This interactive fall foliage prediction map helps photographers plan for the season

Believe it or not, it’s already September. In 16 short days and some change, autumn will officially begin in the Northern Hemisphere, and photographers across the US (and the world) will go hunting for the perfect orange-and-red peppered photograph of the season. Well, if you’re in the United States, you’re in luck: there’s an interactive map available that will help you plan your trip to capture the best possible colors.

It’s called the Fall Foliage Prediction Map, and the 2017 version is officially live on SmokyMountains.com.

Using the map is straightforward: simply go to this link, drag the slider to your desired date and watch as the interactive map of the United States changes color to reveal when any particular area will be at No Change, Minimal, Patchy, Partial, Near Peak, Peak, and Past Peak fall foliage conditions.

The map isn’t perfect, of course, but SmokyMountains.com has been putting this resource together for several years now and many photographers swear by it. To check it out for yourself, click here.

Cinnac is a Tinder-style photo rating app that helps you discover your best photos

If you have trouble deciding which of your images to include in your portfolio, or which ones will get the most positive response on social media, the new cinnac app might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for. Cinnac is a social network for photographers that uses means-tested ratings from its community to help you filter your photos.

The app works by letting you upload so-called “mini blogs” to your account—basically just sets of 20 photos. Other users are then presented with pairs of images from your set and have to vote on their favorite. The end result is that you receive a crowd-generated rating for your images and a ranking, showing you which of your photos are most popular with the cinnac community.

For now, cinnac is still pretty bare-bones, but offers an easy and intuitive “Tinder-style” user interface and could turn into a genuinely useful tool once the community grows large enough for reliable ratings. For example, it could be a great way to decide which photos to add to a professional portfolio, or which will perform best when shared on major social networks like Instagram.

Apple patent shows camera system that helps you take better selfies

A newly granted Apple patent details a new type of camera system that aims to produce higher-quality selfies. The patent, first filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2015, describes using a wider field-of-view with the iPhone’s front-facing camera when taking selfies in landscape mode. The wider FOV wouldn’t be fixed, however, with the camera reverting to a narrower FOV when a selfie is taken in portrait mode.

These field-of-view effects are designed to improve selfies when taken both in groups of people and alone. In the case of groups, the patent explains that turning the phone sideways would expand the camera’s field-of-view to cover a wider angle, ensuring everyone in the group is featured in the selfie. A self-only selfie taken in portrait mode, though, would feature a more traditional aspect ratio such as 4:3 and a narrower FOV.

The camera system in this patent would also be able to intelligently prod the user to take better selfies by selectively narrowing the FOV in portrait mode, requiring the user to extend their arm further away. The system could also adjust the previewed image in such a way that the user will need to change the camera’s angle, the end result being an overall better selfie with a more natural look, reduced distortion, and other improvements.

Explaining that latter point, the patent says the camera system may ‘crop/scale/zoom/shift the image window to coax the user to hold the camera device in a more optimal ‘self-taking’ position.’ As with any patent, it is possible Apple will never implement this technology into a consumer product, but it’s good to know so much technical thought is being put into… selfies.

EyeEm Selects helps you find the best images in your camera roll for posting

EyeEm has rolled out an update to its mobile app for Android that brings the new EyeEm Selects feature. EyeEm Selects helps you find the best photos on your phone’s storage by scanning your camera roll and then using computer vision to suggest photos to upload. Selection criteria is based on aesthetics. The algorithms picks images that are composed particularly well, have the best quality, or highest chance of selling on the EyeEm stock image platform.

EyeEm is already using advanced computer vision technology on its servers for scanning of images that have been uploaded to the service and determine their content, relevant keywords, and aesthetic quality. The app update means that some of those algorithms can now be run on your locally stored images before uploading them. Running the process locally means users save bandwidth and battery power and don’t need to worry about any third parties seeing their images if they decide to not upload them.

Selects is integrated into the image uploader component of the app. Above the camera roll you’ll now see thumbnails of the images suggested for upload. EyeEm says the feature also provides an easy way for finding hidden and long forgotten gems in the depth of your camera roll that weren’t shared right after capture. Android users can download the updated EyeEm app from Google Play now. iOS users will have to wait a few weeks longer.
