FiLMiC Pro update brings Clean HDMI output to Android, iOS smartphones

Professional smartphone video capture app, FiLMiC Pro, has received a new update that adds the ability to stream a clean HDMI output to external livestreaming and recording solutions.

FiLMiC Pro version 6.12 supports a clean HDMI output over compatible HDMI adapters or over Wi-Fi using AirPlay (limited to iOS devices). You can even use multiple smartphones at once running FiLMic Pro to create a multi-cam setup that can be controlled by a livestreaming program such as OBS Studio or a hardware solution such as an ATEM Mini from Blackmagic Design. When paired with the FiLMiC Remote app (Android, iOS), it’s also possible to control each of the cameras wirelessly for more fine-tuned control.

In addition to livestreaming and recording options, this functionality also means you can use your smartphone as a webcam when paired with an HDMI input device, such as an Elgato CamLink 4K. Output resolutions are limited by the devices being used, but in general, Lightning-based iOS devices are capable of 1080/60p output, USB-C iOS devices are capable of 4K/60p and select Samsung devices can max out at 4K DCI 60p.

Atomos Ninja V adds ProRes RAW capture to GFX 100, Sigma fp over HDMI

Atomos has released the latest firmware update for its popular Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables ProRes RAW capture over HDMI with the Fujifilm GFX 100 and Sigma fp camera systems.

Fujifilm GFX 100

On a GFX 100 running firmware version 2.01 or later, the Ninja V can now record 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW video at up to 30p over HDMI. This marks the first time users can capture Raw footage on the large format camera.

If you don’t need the Raw video, the Atomos firmware update also enables 10-bit 422 ProRes and DNx 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) capture up to 30p or 4K DCI (4096?×?2160) at up to 24p. Multiple monitoring modes have also been added for viewing and playing back Raw footage.

Sigma fp

Moving onto the Sigma fp, the Ninja V can now record 12-bit ProRes RAW at 4K DCI up to 24p or 4K UHD up to 30p over HDMI using the full width of the sensor. You can even capture 120p (119.88p) 12-bit ProRes Raw if you knock the resolution down to 1080.

10-bit ProRes 422 and DNx can also be recorded at 30p and 120p (119.88p) at 4K UHD and 1080 resolutions, respectively, if you don’t need Raw footage. Like the GFX 100, multiple monitoring modes have also been included for viewing and playing back Raw footage.

Known limitations

SIGMA fp

• In some instances when using LUTs banding artifacts may be observed in some areas of the display on the Ninja V for

4KUHD video modes. (This behaviour is only limited to the display of the Ninja V and not the recordings).

• On occasion if the camera is. powered down whilst connect to the Ninja V and set to RAW mode, the Ninja V may enter a locked state.

– Switch between Record and Play back mode, Unplugging and re-plugging the HDMI, or Power cycling Switching will all resolve this issue.

• ISO metadata reported in Final Cut Pro X may occasionally be incorrect if using 1/3 EV ISO adjustments on the camera. – Incorrect for camera ISO setting 1000, 8000, 16000.

• Update in future firmware release for camera.
– White balance adjustment is not available in Final Cut Pro X.

FujiFilm GFX100

• Interaction with the EVF eye sensor may cause freeze frame or black frames in the recording. – Not using the EVF or tilting the LCD screen can resolve the issue.
– Removal of the EVF from the camera is advised to avoid issue.

• White balance metadata is not reported in Final Cut Pro X.
– Update in future firmware release for camera and Ninja.
– White balance adjustment is not available in Final Cut Pro X.

General

• RAW to HDR HDMI output – PQ / HDR10 output conversion may appear slightly incorrect.

Sony a7S III to get 4K/60p ProRes Raw capture over HDMI with Atomos’ Ninja V monitor/recorder

To coincide with the announcement of Sony’s a7S III, Atomos has announced it will release a firmware update for its Ninja V recorder/monitor that will enable it to record 4K/60p ProRes Raw video over HDMI.

The 16-bit linear Raw video output of the a7S III is sent via HDMI to the Ninja V recorder, which then compresses and records the video as 12-bit ProRes Raw at up to 4K/60p. The Ninja V will also be able to record the a7S III’s 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI video output as 10-bit 4:2:2 Log or Rec.709 video at up to 4K/60p in ProRes or DNx codecs.

Atomos to record 4Kp60 ProRes RAW over HDMI from Sony’s Alpha 7S III

Melbourne, Australia – July 28, 2020 – Atomos are today announcing RAW recording at up to 4Kp60 via HDMI from Sony’s new Alpha 7S III (ILCE-7SM3) full-frame mirrorless camera to the Ninja V HDR monitor-recorder.

The Alpha 7S III has a state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor and the Ninja V can record its full dynamic range in Apple ProRes RAW for maximum detail and latitude in post-production. Unrestricted RAW recording
RAW recording with the Ninja V from the Alpha 7S III is only limited by your imagination. The combination will record ProRes RAW video for as long as you have disk space on your SSD and power for the camera and recorder. The active cooling employed means that internal record time limitations can be bypassed making a perfect setup for performances and long interviews. Optionally, RAW video can also be captured on the Ninja V at the same time as compressed video is recorded internally to memory card on the Alpha 7S III, providing several workflow options and a useful backup

Making low light RAW video a reality
Alpha 7S III low light performance is especially impressive, with the data from the camera’s large photosites making recording RAW in dim conditions a practical option. The Alpha 7S III also has 5-axis optical image stabilisation that is available while shooting RAW video, allowing for amazingly stable and detailed handheld RAW shots.

16-bit Linear RAW perfectly captured as 12-bit Log RAW
The data-rich 16-bit linear RAW output of the Alpha 7S III is compressed and recorded in the Ninja V as 12-bit ProRes RAW at up to 4Kp60. The result is a high quality ProRes RAW file that combines the superb visual quality of the Alpha 7S III with the workflow advantages of RAW and the incredible real-time performance of ProRes. One key benefit, especially in low light, is that the ProRes RAW files allow you to take fine control of how noise reduction and sharpening is applied to images, tuning these precisely for each shot.

A defined standard
Atomos believes ProRes RAW is the new standard for RAW video capture, which is supported by an ever growing number of cameras outputting RAW over HDMI to the Ninja V. The format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows. Both ProRes RAW, and the higher bandwidth, less compressed ProRes RAW HQ are supported. Manageable file sizes speed up and simplify file transfer, media management, and archiving. ProRes RAW is supported in Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere and Grass Valley Edius, along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront and FilmLight Baselight.

10-bit 4kp60 Apple ProRes or Avid DNx for extended recording
For the first time in a mirrorless camera from Sony there is also a 10-bit 422 HDMI video output option available. The Ninja V and other current Atomos monitor-recorders can record this as 10-bit 422 Log or Rec.709 video at up to 4Kp60 into production ready ProRes or DNx codecs. These provide long record times and practical data rates when the additional flexibility of RAW is not required. This is ideal for situations where the camera needs to integrate into an established post workflow, or a fast turnaround is needed.

HDR monitoring perfection
The accurate 5” 1000nit HDR high brightness display of the Ninja V allows users to view the Alpha 7S III RAW signal in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats or view natively in Sony’s S-Log profile and used with LUTs. The monitor offers touchscreen access to tools like waveform, magnification and peaking so users can check focus and make adjustments to get the perfect HDR or SDR shot.

Launch film from filmmaker Philip Bloom
Renowned filmmaker Philip Bloom has shot a short film titled ‘The Paddleboarder’ to test the ProRes RAW capabilities of the Alpha 7S III with the Ninja V. Shot on the river Thames in just one day it clearly demonstrates just how filmic the RAW images look. In his time with the camera he has also shot ProRes RAW in various lighting conditions including near darkness.

He said: “Sony’s Alpha 7S III is incredibly powerful and does pretty much everything I need from a camera. Having the ability to record RAW over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V is the icing on the cake. Not only can I record at full quality 10-bit 4K internally to the camera’s memory cards, I can simultaneously record 12-bit ProRes RAW to an SSD which gives me more flexibility to grade and bypass things like the in-camera sharpening and noise reduction. This is especially invaluable when shooting at very high ISO where working with RAW allows me to adjust the noise in post processing with much more precision.”

The ‘KD-K1’ keyboard manages to pack in multiple USB ports, an HDMI output and an SD card reader

Minimizing desk clutter is a seemingly impossible task to achieve on the regular, but you might find yourself one step closer with the help of the Kolude KD-K1, an all-in-one keyboard that manages to pack in not only a full-size keyboard, but also a number of ports, including an SD and microSD card slot.

The KD-K1 reached its funding goal on Kickstarter in just 12 hours and has amassed roughly $ 117k in funding from 895 backers as of publishing this article — over ten times its initial goal. The keyboard effectively combines a USB-C hub with a keyboard to create a simplified solution to all forms of input and output for your computer.

Specifically, the KD-K1 features three USB-A 3.0 ports, one USB-A 2.0 port, two USB-C ports (including one Power Delivery port for charging your connected computer/tablet), an SD card slot, a microSD card slot and an HDMI port (4K/30Hz). In addition to the HDMI slot, the USB-C port can output video as well, up to two 4K/30Hz displays.

The keyboard itself is constructed of 100-percent aluminum and uses chiclet-style keys atop scissor-switches. In addition to coming in both black and white variations, both models feature a white LED backlight to make typing and navigating easier in low-light environments.

Kolude says the keyboard was specifically designed with Apple devices in mind, the KD-K1 does have Windows and Android support as well. Kolude says the keyboard supports the following languages at this time, with more anticipated in the future: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Taiwanese/Hong Kong Cangjie, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese and Korean languages.

The first units are expected to start shipping in June 2020 for the ‘early bird’ backers. A $ 119 pledge will secure your spot in line for a Kolude KD-K1 when the keyboard will inevitably be funded in nine days when the Kickstarter campaign ends.

Sigma confirms Log picture profile, Raw over HDMI coming to its fp camera via firmware update

In an interview with Cinema5D, Sigma confirmed it’s bringing a firmware update to its full-frame fp camera that will add Log picture profile and Raw recording over HDMI.

The interview with Takuma Wakamatsu, Sigma’s product planner, took place during Inter BEE 2019. In the interview, Wakamatsu addresses a number of features that have already been confirmed to be on the horizon, such as in-camera CinemaDNG playback and still photo modes while recording video, but he also confirmed a future firmware update will include a Log picture profile in MOV mode and Raw recording over HDMI.

The Log picture profile should improve the dynamic range of the fp and offer more flexibility in post-production, while Raw recording over HDMI would allow external recorders, such as the popular Atomos Ninja V, to record ProRes RAW footage.

No specific timeframe is given for the firmware updates, but Cinema5D notes the updates will arrive in 2020 and be free of charge.

The Atomos Shinobi is a light, bright 5″ 1920×1080 HDMI monitor for $399

Atomos has released the Shinobi, a new super bright 5in 1920×1080 HDMI monitor designed with vloggers and photographers in mind.

The Atomos Shinobi weighs just 200g / 7oz thanks to its polycarbonate body and uses the same HDR display and color processing technology found in Atomos’ popular Ninja V monitor/recorder. It features a 1000nit screen for easy viewing in bright situations, has a pixel density of 427PPI, and includes a headphone on the side of the device to add external recording, even if the camera being used doesn’t have one built-in.

Atomos says the Shinobi comes color calibrated straight from the factory, but also includes calibration support using Atomos’ free software and the X-rite i1Display Pro probe. It features a six-hour battery life on a single Sony NP-F750 battery, which is cleverly placed in the middle of the device to help keep it balanced on top of cameras.

The device features Atomos’ AtomOS 10 touchscreen interface and all of the features that come with, including focus peaking, histogram, zebras, waveforms, guides, markers and magnification. There’s even a mirrored option for vloggers who will have the monitor facing backwards on their device.

Despite having just a 1920×1080 display with 60fps support, the Shinobi’s HDMI port can actually accept signals up to 4K (4096×2160) at 30fps. The screen displays 10+ stops of dynamic range when being used with Log or HLG HDR video and built-in gamma presets are included to match popular camera systems when shooting Log or HLG.

Up to eight LUTs can also be installed directly onto the Shinobi using its built-in memory, with the ability to add even more using the SD card slot. Once installed, the LUTs can be switched on-the-fly to compare one look to another.

The Atomos Shinobi is available now from B&H and authorized Atomos retailers for $ 399 USD.

Nikon, Atomos team up to offer 4K Raw capture over HDMI to the Ninja V external recorder

Atomos has announced it’s working alongside Nikon to develop PreRes Raw recording with Nikon’s Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras. This marks the first time any mirrorless camera will be able to output 4K Raw video over HDMI to an external recorder, in this case the Atomos Ninja V.

‘Capturing Apple ProRes RAW video with the Ninja V unlocks complete control of the video image at the highest quality possible,’ says Atomos in the press release. ‘The maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and detail is preserved, while at the same time every aspect of the video image can be controlled with precision for maximum creativity.’

Atomos explains the Raw video capture works by streaming Raw data across an HDMI cable to the Ninja V external recorder. That footage is then repacked into the ProRes Raw format and stored to a removable SSD drive inside the Ninja V.

When the SSD drive is full or shooting is completed, the drive is then removed and connected to a computer for post-processing. The resulting footage is decoded (debayered) on the computer, as it’s quite a processor-intensive process, and ready to be edited accordingly.

As previously noted, this is the first time 4K Raw video over HDMI has been seen in a mirrorless camera. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K offers Raw output both internally and over USB Type-C, but not over HDMI.

Atomos and Nikon are currently showing off the new 4K Raw recording feature at CES 2019 (Booth #14006), but there’s no official timeframe on when we’ll see this new capability publicly.

The new HDMI 2.1 specification (and cable) adds support for 10K, 8K HDR, and 4K at 120fps

Originally announced back in January and slated for a mid-year release, the HDMI 2.1 specification is just now making its debut on the world stage. Announced by the HDMI forum yesterday, the new specification offers users the ability to deal with 10K video resolution, as well as other data-intensive formats such as Dynamic HDR, uncompressed 8K HDR video, and 4K at 120fps.

A new Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable standard has also been announced that carries up to 48Gbps, and which is said to have ‘exceptionally low electro-magnetic interference’ to avoid conflict with other devices in the vicinity.

HDMI FORUM RELEASES VERSION 2.1 OF THE HDMI SPECIFICATION

A Huge Leap Forward Supports Resolutions Up to 10K and Dynamic HDR and Introduces New Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable

SAN JOSE, California – November 28, 2017 – HDMI Forum, Inc. today announced the release of Version 2.1 of the HDMI® Specification which is now available to all HDMI 2.0 adopters. This latest HDMI Specification supports a range of higher video resolutions and refresh rates including 8K60 and 4K120, and resolutions up to 10K. Dynamic HDR formats are also supported, and bandwidth capability is increased up to 48Gbps.

Supporting the 48Gbps bandwidth is the new Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. The cable ensures high-bandwidth dependent features are delivered including uncompressed 8K video with HDR. It features exceptionally low EMI (electro-magnetic interference) which reduces interference with nearby wireless devices. The cable is backwards compatible and can be used with the existing installed base of HDMI devices.

Version 2.1 of the HDMI Specification is backward compatible with earlier versions of the specification, and was developed by the HDMI Forum’s Technical Working Group whose members represent some of the world’s leading manufacturers of consumer electronics, personal computers, mobile devices, cables and components.

“The HDMI Forum’s mission is to develop specifications meeting market needs, growing demands for higher performance, and to enable future product opportunities,” said Robert Blanchard of Sony Electronics, president of the HDMI Forum.

HDMI Specification 2.1 Features Include:

  • Higher video resolutions support a range of high resolutions and faster refresh rates including 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz for immersive viewing and smooth fast-action detail. Resolutions up to 10K are also supported for commercial AV, and industrial and specialty usages.
  • Dynamic HDR support ensures every moment of a video is displayed at its ideal values for depth, detail, brightness, contrast and wider color gamuts—on a scene-by-scene or even a frame-by-frame basis.
  • The Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable supports the 48G bandwidth for uncompressed HDMI 2.1 feature support. The cable also features very low EMI emission and is backwards compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI Specification and can be used with existing HDMI devices.
  • eARC simplifies connectivity, provides greater ease of use, and supports the most advanced audio formats and highest audio quality. It ensures full compatibility between audio devices and upcoming HDMI 2.1 products.
  • Enhanced refresh rate features ensure an added level of smooth and seamless motion and transitions for gaming, movies and video. They include:
    1. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) reduces or eliminates lag, stutter and frame tearing for more fluid and better detailed gameplay.
    2. Quick Media Switching (QMS) for movies and video eliminates the delay that can result in blank screens before content is displayed.
    3. Quick Frame Transport (QFT) reduces latency for smoother no-lag gaming, and real-time interactive virtual reality.
  • Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) allows the ideal latency setting to automatically be set allowing for smooth, lag-free and uninterrupted viewing and interactivity.

The HDMI 2.1 Compliance Test Specification (CTS) will be published in stages during Q1-Q3 2018, and HDMI adopters will be notified when it is available.

LukiLink turns your smartphone into an external HDMI display for a DSLR

A new device called the LukiLink just popped up on Kickstarter, and it promises to transform your smartphone into an external HDMI displays for your DSLR.

LukiLink is very simple to use: just connect it to a DSLR camera via an HDMI cable on one side, and a smartphone/tablet via a USB cable on the other. Live video from the camera is then output to the smartphone via the LukiLink mobile app (Android and iOS). The system supports a maximum input/output resolution of 1080/60p.

The team behind the LukiLink, which resembles a simple dongle, explains that the system can be used to view live video from the camera with the smartphone serving as an ordinary external monitor. The system can also be used to livestream footage from the camera on platforms like YouTube, and to transform the smartphone (or tablet) into an external recorder.

LukiLink promises support for NTSC, PAL, and PAL-60 video format inputs, bitrates ranging from 3Mbps to “about 18Mbps,” as well as a maximum recording resolution of 1080/30p.
