Volta packs an 8,000mAh power bank into the handle of a camera rig

13 Nov
A new Indiegogo campaign is seeking funds for Volta, an 8,000mAh power bank packed into a camera rig top handle. The product features multiple 1/4″ and 3/8″ screw mounts, a removable ‘handle component,’ and two interchangeable 21700 batteries, which are the same power cells used by Tesla.

The top handle design is presented as a convenient way to tote around an extra power bank — one that, in the case of Volta, features a USB-C port on the front of the handle offering 7.4v versus the 5v commonly offered by commercial external batteries. When Volta isn’t needed as a handle, that component can be removed to use it as an ordinary power bank.

The team behind Volta presents the device as being akin to the combination of an NPF-970 battery and a top handle, but as noted by DIY Photography, the claim doesn’t quite hold up. The 8,000mAh capacity comes from two 4,000mAh power cells wired in series, which works out to 29.6Wh; Sony’s 6,600mAh NP-F970 7.2v battery, on the other hand, features 47.4Wh.

Regardless, the Volta is available to back on Indiegogo with pledges starting at $ 32 USD. Shipping to backers is expected to start in December 2019, assuming the campaign is successful and everything goes according to plan.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets can now handle a 192MP image sensor

12 Mar

Mobile cameras are getting more powerful all the time but the technical advancements are not only down to sensor manufacturers and camera module designers. Mobile chipsets also have to support the new imaging components and be able to process the ever increasing amounts of captured image data.

As spotted in the XDA Developers forum, chipset maker Qualcomm has now updated the specs for a range of its Snapdragon chipsets and it looks like the Snapdragon 670, 675, 710, 845 and 855 models now all support a pretty outrageous camera resolution of 192MP.

There are some limitations, however. In order to process such a large image the camera cannot use any multi-frame processing, for example for HDR or noise reduction, or a zero-shutter-lag. The 192MP limit is also only valid for single-camera setups and not for multi-camera devices. Not even a front-camera would be supported.

Given there are currently no mobile image sensor available that come even close to such a high pixel count, these are mostly theoretical considerations of course. Still, it’s good to see Qualcomm is future-proofing its chipsets and making the spec information readily available to developers and other interested parties.

MindShift’s new ‘Exposure’ messenger bags are built to handle Mother Nature’s worst

12 Apr

MindShift Gear, the sister company of ThinkTank Photo, has released its all new Exposure messenger bag lineup. Like its backpacks, the MindShift Exposure lineup is made with outdoor photographers in mind, complete with water-repellent material and a rugged bottom.

The Exposure shoulder bags come in two versions: the Exposure 13 and the Exposure 15. As the names suggest, the Exposure 13 can fit a 13-inch laptop, as well as one ungripped DSLR with a 24–70mm F2.8 attached and 2–3 extra lenses depending on your setup. Moving up, the Exposure 15 can fit a 15-inch laptop, as well as one ungripped DSLR with a 70–200mm F2.8 lens attached and 2–5 extra lenses depending on the glass you’re packing. Both bags can also hold up to a 10-inch tablet inside a zippered pocket.

As for looks, the bags are available in two color schemes: Black and Solar Flare, the latter of which is essentially gunmetal grey with orange accents.

Here’s a closer look:

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_1110310960″,”galleryId”:”1110310960″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Looks and capacity aren’t the Exposure lineup’s selling point though; these bags were purpose built to handle inclement weather.

The Exposure 13 and 15 were constructed out of durable water-repellant (DWR) fabric and lined with a polyurethane coating, with integrated waterproof sailcloth panels for increased protection from the elements. And for those times when you need to set the bag down, MindShift has constructed the bottom of the bag with Tarpaulin, a strong waterproof fabric that shouldn’t have a problem keeping your gear dry. Finally, if the weather gets even more demanding, there’s also an included rain cover.

The Exposure 13 and 15 messenger bags are available now for $ 160 and $ 170, respectively. To learn more, visit the MindShift Gear website.

Novoflex’s new TrioPod PRO75 modular tripod can handle ‘immense load’

15 Mar

Novoflex has announced an expansion of its TrioPod tripod product line with the launch of the TrioPod PRO75 model. This is a high-capacity advanced spider tripod, according to Novoflex, which claims that the PRO75 model can be used “for even the heaviest photo and video equipment.”

Novoflex explains that its new PRO75 tripod is constructed with 8-layered carbon fiber legs alongside reinforced components. Buyers have a choice between three or four-section carbon fiber legs, as well as a pair of mini legs. The PRO75 model also supports existing TrioPod legs.

The PRO base by itself will run you over $ 880 USD.

The TrioPod PRO75 model can support a maximum load of 65kg / 143lbs and has a total of seven leg lock positions at 23-, 43-, 45-, 65-, 87-, 155-, and 180-degrees. The tripod is made with a high level of versatility in mind, offering support for most 75mm accessories and both 1/4″ and 3/8″ connections, a removable base plate for using a leveling ball, and a self-locking geared center column.

Of course, all of these capabilities are going to cost you a pretty penny. The TrioPod PRO75 base alone, without legs, costs a whopping $ 885.28. Add 3-section carbon fibre legs (plus 2 mini legs) to the kit and you’re looking at $ 1,476.64, while a set of 4-section legs by themselves will run you $ 663.52.

To find out more about the TrioPod PRO75 lineup or order some bits and pieces for yourself, head over to the Novoflex website.

Introducing the NOVOFLEX TrioPod PRO75

The new Modular Tripod of choice for discerning professionals looking for the sturdiest, modular support solution.

For almost four years, the NOVOFLEX TrioPod tripod collection has been lauded as the most innovative tripod system on the market. The Product Innovation Team at NOVOFLEX is proud to announce the expansion of this tripod series with a modular, high-capacity tripod system, the TrioPod PRO75.

Exceptionally stable and modular with immense load capacity.

The basis for the all-new TrioPod PRO75 is the advanced tripod spider, which offers exceptional stability and immense load capacity. Thanks to the reinforced design of the individual components and new 8-layered carbon fiber legs, this modular tripod can be used for even the heaviest photo and video equipment.

The system can be purchased with 3 or 4 section carbon fiber legs plus two mini legs for maximum versatility.

In addition to the recommended new tripod legs C3930 and C3940, existing TrioPod legs can also be used with the new TrioPod PRO75 as well. With the optionally available carbon leg extensions, a total height of 79 in./2.0 m is possible. Short 2-segment carbon fiber legs C2820 are also available allowing you to achieve completely new perspectives and are even compatible with the existing TrioPod and QuadroPod Systems.

Features

Maximum Load Capacity – 143 lbs/65 kg – Maximum holding capacity for maximum protection.

Removable Base Plate – A new feature of the tripod spider is the removable base plate that easily be detached and replaced with the optional leveling ball (MBAL-PRO75) or a geared center column (TRIO-CC-PRO75).

Unmatched Versatility – To build your tripod to meet the needs of any job the PRO75 can fit most 75mm accessories, even from other manufacturers. The optional leveling ball (MBAL-PRO75) can also be used with any other tripod you may have with a ¼” & 3/8” connection.

Self-Locking Geared Center Column – The innovative 3/8” studs on both ends of the geared center column provide an extra measure of security and compatibility by taking the load off the ¼” threads. The column itself can be adjusted by 19 in./48 cm.

7 Leg Lock Positions for Any Situation – For shoots on level surfaces, the TrioPod PRO75 spider allows the legs to be set at 23°, 45°, 65°, and 87°. Should you find yourself in a more confined space, a further locking position of 155° enables you to support the tripod against vertical surfaces. Particularly innovative is a new 43° angle that allows the tripod to flip upside down quickly for ground-level work, eliminating the need to reverse the center column and/or tripod head. For easy packaging, the legs can also be folded up at 180°.

Ground Level Work

Easy Packaging

The TrioPod PRO75 is available in two kits:

  • TRIOPROC3930 – consisting of TrioPod PRO75 tripod spider, (3x) C3930 3-segment carbon fiber legs, (2x) A1010 mini-legs, a tripod bag and multi-tool.

  • TRIOPROC3940 – consisting of TrioPod PRO75 tripod spider, (3x) C3940 4-segment carbon fiber legs, (2x) A1010 mini-legs, a tripod bag and multi-tool.

Vixari is the world’s most portable tripod, but it can still handle DSLRs

10 Nov

A new tripod called Vixari is attempting to launch on Kickstarter, where it is billed as “the world’s most portable tripod.” Vixari has an ultra-portable foldable design that’s only a little bigger than a smartphone, but despite its ultra-compact size, Vixari is still able to handle large cameras, including DSLRs that weigh up to 2kg / 4.4lbs.

Vixari isn’t the first portable tripod, but the team behind it claims that it is the most compact. The tripod features extendable legs that fold into the unit’s body, which itself doubles as a folding case. Each of the three legs have a maximum length of 105cm / 41in, while the body has three mounting options: a slot for smartphones between 6mm and 9mm in thickness, a mount screw, and GoPro tripod mount adapter. And since it can be used to trigger smartphones, it includes a Bluetooth remote shutter that supports Android and iOS.

The tripod body is made from polycarbonate, while the legs are made from aluminum alloy, the combination of which makes it durable and lightweight. The tripod will be offered in black, white, and dark blue colors, assuming it successfully makes it to market. Overall, Vixari measures 19cm x 6.5cm x 3.4cm / 7.4in x 2.5in x 1.33in and weighs 600g / 1.32lbs.

Kickstarter backers are offered the tripod, plus mount screw, mount adapter, remote shutter, and charging cable for pledges of at least £49 / $ 65. Shipping to these early bird backers is expected to start in February 2018.

To learn more or put down a pledge, head over to the Kickstarter campaign.

SanDisk launches ultra-reliable industrial memory cards that can handle extreme temperatures

07 Oct

Western Digital is working on a line of ultra-reliable, ultra-tough SanDIsk memory cards meant for automotive and industrial applications. There will be an automotive SD card for use in vehicles and drones, and three industrial cards in SD, microSD and XI formats, all of which are designed to withstand extreme temperature ranges and provide even better reliability than the manufacturer’s standard cards.

It’s safe to say you’ll have to encounter some pretty extreme climatic conditions to bring these cards to their metaphorical knees. The Industrial SD and microSD cards can be used in temperatures ranging from -13°F to 185°F, while the Industrial XI and Automotive SD cards can take temperatures between -40°F and 185°F.

At 80MB/s and 50MB/s, the cards also offer decent read/write speeds and come with a Status Monitor tool and a number of data protection features. According to a report on AnandTech, samples of the cards are in the process of being distributed to manufacturers. We’re just hoping the cards will also be available through retail channels at some point in the nearer future… photographers operating in extreme conditions would definitely appreciate this extra layer of reliability.

HP reveals insane Z8 workstation: Can handle 3TB of RAM and 48TB of storage

14 Sep

The rise of 4K (and 6K… and 8K) video, not to mention virtual reality and 360° content, means the computers of today need to grow up and they need to do it fast. 16GB of RAM, a decent video card, and 1TB of hard drive space just won’t cut it for many professionals any longer… but even those professionals who need boatloads of power will probably go wide-eyed when they hear the specs of HP’s new top-of-the-line desktop workstations.

HP revealed its new Z8, Z6, and Z4 workstations today, and the company is not joking when it says the new desktops are equipped with “extreme power.” In fact, the Z8 is being touted as “the most powerful desktop workstation on the planet.” Here’s why…

Inside this mammoth of a PC you will find dual Intel Xeon CPUs with up to 56 processing cores, which are running your real-time 8K video editing session off of up to 3 terabytes of RAM. That is not a typo. You also have access to 9 PCIe slots (7 full size, 2 ‘personality’ slots), dual 1GbE Ports, Thunderbolt 3 (optional), and USB 3.1 G2 Type C ports as well.

The fully spec-d out Z8 is probably out of reach for many creatives, which is why there’s also a Z6 and Z4. These workstations can’t handle quite as much in way of raw processing power, speed, and storage, but they’re still extremely capable machines.

The Z6 also sports dual CPUs, can handle up to 384 GB of system memory, and features dual M.2 slots for HP’s own Z Turbo Drive PCIe SSDs.

The Z4 is a bit weaker still, housing only a single Intel Xeon W CPU, 256GB of RAM, as well as dual 1GbE ports and dual M.2 slots.

The Z8 and Z6 will both be available in October, with the Z4 following shortly after in November. You can get the base model Z8 for just $ 2,440 but don’t expect that to be a fully upgraded version… for that you’ll likely need to shell out many thousands more. In contrast, the Z6 will run you $ 1,920 for the base model and the Z4 will cost $ 1,240.

To learn more, head over to HP’s website and have your bib ready… something drooling this way comes.

Super fast, tiny Samsung T5 portable SSD hits 540MB/s, can handle raw 4K video

16 Aug

Samsung has introduced a new ultra-fast, teeny-tiny solid-state-drive called the Samsung Portable SSD T5. This model boasts up to a 2TB capacity alongside transfer speeds that reach up to 540MB/s, making it suitable for editing raw 4K footage and other large files. This drive is notable for its use of Samsung’s 64-layer V-NAND technology, the driving force behind the rapid transfer speeds of this lightweight, pocketable model.

Compared to the company’s own testing with an external 500GB HDD, Samsung says its T5 SSD model is nearly 5 times faster, this despite measuring in at only 3 x 2.3 x 0.4-inches / 74 x 57.3 x 10.5mm. The South Korean company has also boosted the SSD’s durability by using a shock-resistant internal frame, one capable of handling drops from heights as high as 6.6ft / 2m.

The drive features USB-C, and is shipped with two cables, one featuring a USB-C connector and another featuring a USB-A connector.

The T5 drive is offered in two finishes: Alluring Blue, which comes in 250GB and 500GB capacities, and Deep Black, which comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities. All four models feature AES 256-bit hardware encryption and are joined by a companion app that makes them compatible with Android mobile devices.

The models are available as of today starting at $ 130 USD.
