Nova: The First Ever Off-Phone Flash that Really Flashes

09 Jun

Extra photos for bloggers: 1, 2, 3

Who is that ghost haunting all of the pics you took last night? Oh, it’s you? There has got to be a better flash than that one on your phone.

There is! It’s the Nova, the first ever off-phone flash that syncs with your phone (and protects you from haunted photos).

It talks to your phone via bluetooth so it’s free to roam up to 20 feet away, light from any angle and still flash when you hit your shutter.

The Nova is so small it fits in your wallet, but it is packed with LEDs that make it mighty bright.

Use the Nova app to adjust the brightness and color of your flash. Add warmth when the lights are low to give your smiling face an attractive glow and keep ghostly creatures from creepin’ in.

Warning: “Strobist” Flashes

28 Jan

There is a disreputable company out of the UK and Australia persistently referring to their flashes as “Strobist Flashes.” Over my protest, they are deliberately implying an association with this site where none exists.

I have zero connection with either these people or their gear. Had they asked for any kind of endorsement, five minutes worth of research would have warned me off any association with them.

Of course, they did not ask. They merely appropriate the name and hope enough people are stupid enough not to know the difference. As such, they are merely using my company’s name and brand to try to get into your pants. Which should tell you all you need to know about the company’s ethics.

The flashes themselves are (surprise) rebranded Chinese mystery meat flashes. For the record, there are no genuine “Strobist” branded flashes. Even the LumoPro LP180, while highly recommended, is not a Strobst-branded flash. For many conflict of interest reasons, I do not sell gear.

I have asked them to stop, to no response. Clearly, they don’t give a whit about IP. Although they do of course claim copyright over the content of their site, natch. Intellectual property is important—when it suits them.

Please do not infer any type of endorsement of these (at best) bozos. I obviously do not trust them as far as I can throw them.

Disney’s Invisible Flashes

28 Jul

While visiting Disneyland Paris, long-time reader Paul Mason of Hartlepool, UK watched a Disney staff photographer work a room doing shots of kids with the characters.

He noticed a remote on the photographer's camera, but saw no flashes anywhere — until they went off.

New capacitor could make xenon smartphone flashes more popular

22 Feb

xenonflash.jpeg

A new, smaller capacitor could make Xenon flashes practical for use in ultra-slim smartphones. Researchers from a university in Singapore have partnered up with Xenon Technologies to develop a tiny capacitor for Xenon flashes that it claims is just as powerful as existing, larger versions. This is potentially big news for the smartphone industry which has primarily used LED lights in preference to Xenon flashes up to now. Few smartphones have incorporated Xenon flashes because of their higher power demands and larger physical size. Learn more about the tiny new capacitor at connect.dpreview.com.
