Fujifilm has filed a patent for an image sensor that uses a novel layout, with green and clear rectangular pixels which are larger in area than their neighboring blue and red pixels. The idea behind it is apparently to reduce luminance noise at the expense of color noise, on the grounds that the human eye is less sensitive to the latter. Learn more
We all like having different resources at hand, be it graphic design, getting inspiration or just plain images to embed into articles. It would be so good if we didn’t have to be looking for resources in different websites until we find what we want, wouldn’t it? Here’s where Freepik comes into our lives, giving us those much needed graphic Continue Reading

This week Mark Wallace explains the difference between RAW and JPEG. There’s no right or wrong answer to the question “should I shoot RAW or JPEG?” but Mark will help explain the advantages of each format.
Plies – “Me Ho” from his mixtape “You Need People Like Me” (hosted by DJ Scream). Special thanks to Ben Evans and Jose Delosangeles who assisted with the shoot. Video Rating: 4 / 5
www.Berger-Bros.com One of the most frequently asked questions posed by students new to the world of digital photography is this “What is the difference between a jpeg file and a raw file?” Yvonne Berger, head photography instructor at Berger Bros Cameras in long Island, New York, explains the difference between jpeg and raw files and breaks it down in a simple and easy to understand explanation. A jpeg file is a basic file that every digital camera is capable of taking. So, whether you’re using a point and shoot or a digital slr, chances are the default setting is a jpeg file. The jpeg file gets processed within your camera. However, a raw file gets processed “post process” with an editing software program. Why shoot jpeg vs. a raw file? A jpeg file is easier to use and can be emailed, etc. A raw file needs editing software, like Adobe Photoshop Elements, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom…even Picasa…in order to be read. Benefits of jpeg 1) it’s quick 2) easy to use, and 3) ready to go Benefits of raw files 1) better quality than jpeg So, which one should you use? Well, if you’re using a lower end point and shoot camera then chances are you can’t use raw…so you’ll need to go with jpeg files. Some of the higher end point and shoot cameras can shoot raw by using the setting “jpeg plus raw”. Video Rating: 4 / 5

Don’t remember what you named a recent file or what folder / location you placed it in? Use a date modified search.
It has happened to all of us. You recently created or modified a file in some application in Windows 7, but don’t remember its name or what folder in which you placed it. You can try going back to the original application and hope the filename is in the recently used file list by selecting the “File” menu, but what if the file is not there? All hope is not lost!
Modify Windows 7’s “Send To” menu to send files to other applications including Notepad.
Since many file types do not have associated programs and you may not want to set up associations for all of them, it may prove useful to try determining the contents by viewing or editing such files in Notepad or another text editor.
To aid with this, right-click on a file in Windows 7 and a “Send To” menu appears. Select this option and you can copy the file to the Desktop as a shortcut, compress the file, send it to an attached CD/DVD drive (if applicable), and other options may be present. Why not add Notepad or your desired text editor to this list for easy access?…
Show or hide a variety of icons on the Windows 8 Desktop: Computer, Control Panel, Files, Network, and/or the Recycle Bin.
By default, the Windows 8 Desktop is fairly sparse, only showing an icon for the Recycle Bin so you can quickly view deleted files that have not been completely removed from the system.
While you can access your Computer, Control Panel, the network, and your user files via the Explorer icon in the Taskbar, you might find it more useful to have Desktop icons that you can double-click for instant access to these locations. …
Simple Data Backup is a freeware backup application for Windows that can be configured to turn on your machine automatically to run backups at off-hours.
Most of us could do a better job making backups of our files to ward against hard drive failure, spyware or malware attack, or other disasters. One option for doing this is the freeware Simple Data Backup application for Windows, which can be set up to backup files every day. Depending on your computer setup, it can even wake up your computer to activate and shutdown when done, so you can perform backups at three in the morning, for example.
Files can be backed up directly or compressed as .7z or .zip files. Other options include forcing certain programs to close before backups occur (to help ensure files aren’t locked due to being in use), placing a shortcut to the backup options on your Desktop, and deleting files from the backup if they no longer exist in the source directory. The software even supports a variety of command-line switches….
