18 February, 2014 – Fuji X-T1 Field Report

18 Feb

Possibly the most innovative camera maker today is Fujifilm. From unique sensor designs, to unique viewing systems, Fuji is constantly exploring new ways to help photographers capture images. Now, with the soon-to-be-released Fuji X-T1 the evolving X system has reached a maturity of sorts. Our contributing editor, Nick Devlin, recently traveled to the US Southwest and Canadian Midwest with an X-T1, and gives the net’s first field report on this exciting new camera.

16 February, 2014 – Panasonic GM1 Field Report

16 Feb

The new Panasonic GM1 is a tour-de-force of miniaturization. It takes most of the capabilities of the GX7 and squeezes them into a body smaller than just about any interchangeable lens camera ever made. But, is this a "good thing"? Find out in Michael’s hands-on report from Antarctica and Chile.

13 February, 2014 – Fuji X100s Review

14 Feb

There is one camera company that is really getting noticed these days, and that is Fuji. They seem unstoppable as they continually are releasing new cameras and lens at a very fast pace. They stand apart with their APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor. It all started with the X100 and since that introduction Fuji has followed with numerous other X branded cameras. Not forgetting where their roots are they released the next generation X100s a few months ago. This little camera has a huge following and if there is a camera that has done retro right it is the X100s. Alain Briot a regular contributor here on Luminous-Landscape switches gears from his regular essays and does a Camera Review Of The X100s.

We are very excited about the new Fuji X-T1 camera recently announced. In addition Fuji has made a number of new lens announcements. We are eager to try out the new 10-24mm zoom. This lens combined with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm zoom will make a formidable kit. We will be posting articles and information on all this in the near future.

Are you planning on attending this year’s WPPI Trade Show and Convention in Las Vegas March 3-5? If so drop us an email. Kevin and Chris will be there reporting on the show and it would be great to meet some where and say hi.

10 February. 2014 – Photographing The Arctic

11 Feb

This July Peter Cox, Kevin Raber along with Morten Jørgensen will lead two small ship tours to the Arctic region around Svalbard, Norway.  This is a very unique workshop as it is a small ship trip with 11 participants on each trip.  This area is known as Land Of The Polar Bear.  We will be photographing landscapes, wildlife and polar bears.  Ten years ago Iceland was hardly a blip on the radar for photographers.  That was until Luminous-landscape did some workshops there.  We feel that Svalbard is the new Iceland.  This is your chance to be one of the first to explore this region and come back with some amazing images.  The small ship we will use is ideally suited to photograph polar bears in this region since it has a main deck close to the waterline.  To get a better idea of what you can expect from a trip like this, read Peter Cox’s article Photographing In The Arctic – Svalbard 2013.  This is a trip log from a trip we did this past August.  And when you are ready to sign up for this year’s trip you can find out more information HERE.

The NEW Phase One IQ250 has received a lot of press in the last few weeks.  We had a chance to work with this new back as well as share it with a number of participants on our recent Antarctica workshop. Look for an article on how it performed soon. Today, Doug Peterson of Digital Transitions shares a behind the scene look at what it took for Phase One to bring this new CMOS chip back to market. Read Doug’s article – The Phase One IQ250 CMOS Fully Realized.

3 February, 2014 – Back From Antarctica

03 Feb

We are back in Chile after a very successful and incredible adventure to Antarctica.  The Luminous-Landscape team of Michael, Kevin and Chris as well William Neil lead a group of 63 photographers on a non-stop adventure.  We had the most incredible weather making every day perfect for photography.  We couldn’t have asked for a better group of participants and the Antarctica XXI Expedition team was absolutely the best.  We are now working our way back north and to home over the coming days. Once we get our feet on the ground we will have a lot more about this trip as well as a lot of other news. There are only a few berths left for the second Antarctica Trip in 2015.  After experiencing this this trip I would highly recommend that you sign up now as we are sure once we start publishing images and the trip log that these remaining spots will go fast.

23 February, 2013 – From Passion to Vision

22 Feb

Our regular contributor and essayist, Alain Briot begins a new series today titled Vision.

Sean Reid has just published an in-depth analysis of image quality from the new Leica M (240). Reid Reviews is a subscription site, but no one else on the web or in print delves as deeply into the subjective aspects of image quality as Sean.

My own review of the new M Leica will have to wait till I return from Mexico. Getting a prototype through the Byzantine world of Mexican Customs was too much to bother with. It also now appears that release of the new M has been delayed until at least late April. My own hands-on review will be completed by then and will appear at around that time.

Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be, but when it comes to cameras that I used in my youth, I’m a sucker.

Today’s exclusive essay is a look at one of my favourites, the Rollei 2.8F by István Nagy.

Lives there a photographer who doesn’t want to see a book of their work in print? Likely not. But publishers are reticent, book markets are contracting, and the costs of self-publishing are high. So how to finance such a venture?
