Dead Drops: Hidden USB Sticks Offer Anonymous File Sharing

07 Feb

usb dead drop

If you happened to notice a USB stick poking out of a brick wall in an urban space, would you be brave enough to connect your computer to it just to see what it might contain? Will it dump a bunch of malicious software onto your machine, or reveal something amazing? You just never know. The Dead Drops offline peer-to-peer file sharing project has been called “the nerd equivalent to glory holes,” bringing the sense of anonymity provided by the internet into the real world in a way that feels conspicuously sketchy.

Berlin-based artist Aram Bartholl took inspiration from the methods spies used to transfer information in a secret location. The process of accessing or distributing files on these networks is anonymous, you can share anything you want, and actually plugging your laptop or tablet into the drive sometimes requires bending at awkward angles or doing something that looks vaguely suspicious.

Bartholl notes that the ‘danger’ of participating in the project is no different from that of sharing files on the internet. People typically share photographs, art, poetry and videos. The drives range from 64 megabytes to a whopping 120 gigabytes. To install one of your own, just find or create a hole in a wall or other urban surface, remove the thumb drive’s plastic case and wrap the memory board with waterproof tape, place it in the hole with just the port exposed and cement it in with fast-setting concrete.

The project started in 2010 and has since grown to thousands of locations worldwide, according to a database that tracks where they’ve been installed. Some can be found in the busiest areas of cities like New York, while others are in abandoned buildings off the beaten track. You can find out whether there are any near you, or create one of your own using the Dead Drops site’s instructions.

The MSRP in the US is now $ 998, down from $ 1299, and prices in Europe have dropped as well (though it’s unclear if they’re official). It’s not known if this was a planned price reduction, or a reaction to the Panasonic FZ1000 which is about to hit store shelves at a list price of $ 899. Read more

Carl Zeiss drops ‘Carl’, becomes ‘ZEISS’

28 Jun

shared:Zeiss_logo.png

We’ve all been there – your friend Carl is over by the fridge, getting some ice, and there you are with an expensive new Carl Zeiss lens, and you’re describing it to someone, and Carl keeps saying ‘What? What did you say? Do you want ice?’ It’s confusing. No wonder then that German lens manufacturer Carl Zeiss has decided to officially drop the ‘Carl’ and will henceforth be known simply as ZEISS. According to the manufacturer’s blog, the decision was taken to ‘create consistency’ across its brand communications. Click through for more details (and no more terrible Carl puns, we promise).

Facebook.com – Become a Fan! Twitter.com – Follow Us! Get the deets on how Daniel Radcliffe is stirring things up in his new movie. It’s right now. Hey guys! Thanks for checking out to ClevverTV. I’m your host Dana Ward coming at you from our Hollywood headquarters. Today we’ve got news on Daniel Radcliffe’s upcoming movie. He’s set to star in the indie comedy flick, The Amateur Photographer, playing just that, a young amateur photographer!!! Thanks to Variety for the 411, Daniel’s character goes around his small New England town documenting the most intimate moments of his neighbors’ lives. Of course, the resulting photography causes a bit of backlash from the local authorities but there might be a little good in the form of a community revolution that also goes down. It’s cool that this takes place in 1970 so we won’t be seeing any high-tech digital photos being Twitpic-ed; we’ll be dealing with old school film. Love it. So that’s the latest on The Amateur Photographer and its star Daniel Radcliffe. Be sure to follow us on Twitter — that’s @Clevvertv — for more movie updates just like this one. Dana Ward here and as always, we’ll see you soon with more entertainment news!
