Sony announces new A-mount to E-mount lens adapter with built-in screw drive support

Sony has announced the impending release of the LA-EA5, its newest A-mount to E-mount lens adapter. In addition to changing mounts, the new adapter provides autofocus support for Sony A-mount SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) lenses, SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) lenses, and even non-motorized screw-drive lenses in still shooting modes.

Despite the ability to power non-motorized screw-drive lenses (limited to the a7R IV and a6600, at least for the time being), the LA-EA5 features a compact form factor, thanks to clever internal gear and motor positioning. Sony says the adapter provides ‘full support for focal plane phase-detection autofocus (stills only), wide-area focal phased detection autofocus (stills only), Real-time Eye AF for both humans and animals, Real-time Tracking and AF/AE (auto exposure) tracking for SSM/SAM lenses on nine most recently introduced E-mount cameras at up to 11 frames per second depending on the camera model.’ The supported camera models, as of this press release, are as follows:

  • Sony a7 III
  • Sony a7R III
  • Sony a7R IV (up to 10 fps)
  • Sony a6100
  • Sony a6400
  • Sony a6600 (up to 11 fps)
  • Sony a9 (up to 10 fps)
  • Sony a9 II (up to 10 fps)
  • Sony a7S III

Sony says the LA-EA5 will be available in October 2020 for a suggested retail price of $ 250 / $ 330 CAD. You will be able to find a full compatibility list on Sony’s support page (currently shows ‘Coming Soon’ as of posting this article).

Using the new LA-EA5 A-mount adaptor, users can now access the acclaimed autofocus and high-speed shooting capabilities found in Sony’s latest E-mount camera bodiesi with A-mount SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) and SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) lensesii, as well as A-mount lenses that do not have internal focus motors.

Full support is provided for focal plane phase-detection AFiii, wide-area focal phase-detection AFiii coverage, Real-time Eye AF for both humans and animals, Real-time Tracking and AF/AEiv (auto exposure) tracking for SSM/SAM lenses on nine most recently introduced E-mount camerasi at up to 11fpsv depending on the camera model. When used with the Alpha 7R IVvi or Alpha 6600vi, for the first time, these capabilities are possible with lenses that do not have internal focus motors, such as the Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA and Planar T* 85mm F1.4 ZA.

The LA-EA5 combines a compact design, featuring an aperture drive unit and a newly developed compact AF drive unit. To ensure comfortable operation when used on an E-mount camera body, the new adaptor’s diameter matches that of the A-mount, perfectly aligning with the edges of the mount. The LA-EA5 allows easy operation on full-frame E-mount bodies, even when a vertical grip is attached to the camera body.

Fujifilm is developing a 400TB tape media drive

When thinking about storage technology in 2020, one rarely thinks about tape media. However, magnetic tape media is critical to archiving data. As data demands continually increase, Fujifilm is working on a new technology that will be a massive breakthrough in linear tape-based storage, offering up to 400TB of storage in a single drive.

As PetaPixel notes, tape-based storage technology is primarily Linear Tape-Open (LTO). Currently, LTO is in its eighth generation, LTO-8, and has a maximum capacity of 12TB, far below the maximum capacity Fujifilm is developing. LTO-9, slated to arrive later this year, maxes out at ‘only’ 24TB. A 12TB (native) Fujifilm Ultrium LTO-8 drive is shown in the leading image of this article.

The driving force behind this potential leap in magnetic tape storage capacity to 400TB is due to a new coating on the tape. LTO-8, and upcoming LTO-9 drives, feature tape coated with Barium Ferrite (BaFe). Down the line, Fujifilm is intending to use Strontium Ferrite (SrFe) instead, due to its superior magnetic qualities. In a 2018 document on LTO, Fujifilm states ‘…the majority of the magnetic properties of SrFe are superior to those of BaFe, which will enable us to reach a higher level of performance whilst further reducing the size of the particles.’ With respect to reducing the size of particles, this is no easy feat. Fujifilm continues, ‘…it is extremely important to carry out a very precise control of the nucleation of the particles.’

In the same document, Fujifilm states that it began research on SrFe in 2012 and has performed research and development solely on their own. In 2015, Fujifilm achieved a 220TB coating on a single tape and as of 2018, believed they could further reduce the volume of particles by 40 percent. The technology is still quite far from retail availability, however, as Fujifilm has aimed to introduce SrFe LTO by 2027. As per Blocks & Files, Fujifilm’s SrFe tape media has achieved 224Gbit per square inch, which results in the 400TB capacity mentioned earlier.

It’s easy for many of us to ignore the importance and proliferation of magnetic tape storage. In a 2018 article by Bloomberg Businessweek, director of technology services for the data management firm Iron Mountain Inc., said magnetic tapes are “part of what’s keeping the world running.’ At that time, Iron Mountain had stored more than 85 million square tapes across 210 warehouses and old mines. The article continues, ‘Although the century-old technology has disappeared from most people’s daily view, magnetic tape lives on as the preferred medium for safely archiving critical cloud data.’ Even as our storage technology becomes more modern from a front-facing perspective, a fundamental foundation of it all remains magnetic tapes.

Availability, performance and the overall lack of traditional usability of LTO cassettes render the technology far outside the purview of most photographers and videographers. However, the technological advancements of Fujifilm, and the only other tape media producer, Sony, are critical for the long-term storage and safety of our data, especially data we want to be backed up to cloud servers around the world. It’s amazing how far a storage technology originating in the 1950s continues to be pushed over time.

Plugable launches 512GB version of its Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive with read speeds up to 2,400MB/s

Back in November 2019, accessory manufacturer Plugable launched its 1TB and 2TB Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drives. Now, roughly three months later, Plugable has announced it’s now offering the same drive in a 512GB capacity for those who don’t need as much space or prefer to keep their content spread across multiple smaller drives.

Like its larger counterparts, the 512GB Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive is powered entirely through its integrated Thunderbolt 3 cable and features sequential read speeds up to 2,400MB/s and write speeds up to 1,800MB/s. The drive works at full-speed with any Thunderbolt 3-compatible macOS or Windows computer and is backward compatible at USB-C speeds on computers without Thunderbolt 3.

The drive is constructed of aluminum and weighs just 173g (6.1oz).The 512GB Plugable Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive will retail for $ 200, but is currently available for a launch-special price of $ 180 (when you clip the coupon code).

SanDisk reveals 8TB SSD prototype and Ultra Dual Drive Luxe 1TB flash drive

SanDisk has introduced a sleek new flash drive that features an appealing metal body and a very practical dual-connector design. The new SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe thumb drive will arrive later this year, offering users a large storage capacity in a small form factor.

As its name suggests, the Luxe drive features both USB-C and USB-A connectors, making it possible to use the drive with the majority of newer smartphones, tablets and laptops on the market. In addition to its high level of durability due to the metal build, SanDisk’s new drive has a slot for attaching the device to a keychain or securing it within a bag using a lanyard.

According to Engadget, SanDisk will release this model toward the end of 2020; the price hasn’t been revealed at this time.

In addition to the upcoming flash drive, SanDisk also showcased a prototype portable SSD with a massive 8TB capacity capable of 20Gbps transfer speeds. According to Engadget, the drive is slightly larger than the SanDisk Extreme External SSDs, though it’s still small enough to stuff in a pocket.

Though it would be the highest capacity portable SSD if it were to come to market, it only exists as a prototype at this time. It’s unclear when SanDisk anticipates launching the product and how much it will cost, though it’s likely to be quite expensive. The company’s existing 2TB Extreme Portable SSD model costs $ 270, for comparison.

LumaFusion 2.1 video editing app adds external drive support, new aspect ratios and more

Mobile video editing app LumaFusion has been updated to version 2.1 to take advantage of new iOS 13 and iPadOS features. With LumaFusion 2.1, users can import and export media from external drives, including SD cards, flash drives, and portable HDDs/SSDs. In addition, the updated app also adds support for the iOS 13 system font selector, 27 new blend modes, aspect ratios and resolutions for the latest iPad and iPhone models, and an improved iOS 13 Dark Mode.

In addition to the new features, LumaFusion 2.1 brings a number of improvements, including dozens of UI ‘refinements,’ the ability play and pause previews with a single tap, rapid clip previewing using two-finger swipes, default ‘recommended’ export settings, improved project package format and exporting process, and the ability to long-press to quickly remove Network Drive servers.

Users can also expect general stability and performance improvements, as well as fixes for the level meters and the addition of text and color markers in library search. LumaFusion is available for iPad and iPhone from the App Store now for $ 29.99.

Fujifilm updates X-T3 firmware to fix an issue that can occur when shooting in ‘S’ drive mode

Fujifilm has released a small firmware update for its X-T3 mirrorless camera that fixes a specific ‘phenomenon’ that can require you to turn your camera off and back on again.

Firmware version 3.01 (previously version 3.00) addresses an issue wherein a message reading ‘turn off the camera and turn on again’ can appear when shooting in the ’S’ drive mode while repeatedly taking photos within a short timeframe.

Aside from that, Fujifilm doesn’t mention any other fixes in this update, even basic bug fixes.

Trump’s New Tariffs Could Drive Up the Prices of Cameras and Lenses

President Donald Trump made waves last week when he announced new tariffs on Chinese goods via Twitter.

Trump writes:

“Our representatives have just returned from China where they had constructive talks having to do with a future Trade Deal…Trade talks are continuing.”

Trump goes on to explain that “the US will start, on September 1st, putting a small additional Tariff of 10% on the remaining 300 Billion Dollars of goods and products coming from China into our Country.”

In other words, certain goods will be taxed before arriving in the US.

For photographers, this is an especially painful blow.

Up to this point, photography equipment had largely managed to avoid any import taxes. But the new 10% tariff will be largely levied on electronics, including computers, phones, and camera gear. And it may cause serious consequences for American consumers of photo equipment.

You see, prices of camera products exist in a delicate balance. When the cost to import the gear goes up, prices go up with it, in order to offset the cost paid by resellers. This cost is often felt by consumers.

While companies like Canon, Nikon, and Sony are based in Japan, a significant number of their imaging products are made in China. It’s these products that will be hit by the tariffs, and it’s these products consumers should be worried about.

Trump does promise that his administration will work toward a trade deal with China. However, you should note that these new tariffs follow on the heels of previous tariffs, which left camera gear largely untouched. If the trend continues, things are likely to get worse before they get better.

Of course, this news is only relevant to American readers. Prices in countries other than the US will remain unaffected. But for photography-lovers in America, you may want to purchase any China-made camera gear now, while you can still get it for cheap.

President Trump’s tweet indicates that the new tariffs will come into effect on September 1st.

So pretty soon, prices will be on the rise.

How to Move Your Lightroom Library to an External Drive

Many photographers put their pictures on their computer’s internal hard drive. This can be a great solution since even laptops now have fairly generous storage options compared to their counterparts in days gone by. It may take you a while to fill up a 1TB or larger internal drive even if you shoot in RAW, but at some point, you’re going to run out of space, and you’ll have to address this problem. Cloud storage is a good solution but often involves a monthly or yearly fee, and upgrading your internal drive can be expensive and time-consuming. One perfect solution is to migrate your entire Lightroom library to an external drive. While this might sound difficult and intimidating, it’s quite simple and is something that anyone can easily do.

Choosing your storage

Storage space is fairly inexpensive, but not infinite. There are always going to be physical limitations when it comes to how many images you can store on a single piece of media. This is true whether it’s a traditional hard drive, a solid-state drive, or a mix of both such as Apple’s Fusion Drives.

Thankfully, external drives can offer vast amounts of storage space for relatively little money. With the fast transfer speeds of USB-3, which is common on most computers today, you won’t lose anything in terms of editing efficiency by having your pictures stored externally.

The first step in migrating your pictures to an external drive is to buy an external drive, and you have several options:

Traditional hard drive made with spinning platters. If you take this route, I recommend one with a transfer rate of 150mb/sec (megabytes per second) and an RPM speed of 7200. As I write this in early 2019, a four-terabyte drive, which can hold around 200,000 RAW files or half a million JPG files without breaking a sweat, can be found for US$ 100 to US$ 150.

Storage is inexpensive and prices are falling all the time. This 4 terabyte hard drive was only $ 90 when I bought it in the spring of 2019. (Guitar pick shown for scale.)

Solid-state drive with no moving parts. These aren’t as cheap as traditional drives, and they don’t hold quite as much data. However, with prices falling all the time, it won’t be long until solid-state drives are the norm and traditional spinning platters become redundant. Transfer rates on these drives are going to be plenty fast enough for any photo editing.

RAID array or Drobo. These are much more expensive than traditional storage options but offer redundancy in case of data failures, but they might be overkill for non-professional photographers. Besides, no matter what external storage solution you use, you should always have at least one off-site backup even if you do use a RAID array.

For most people, I recommend a simple USB-3 external drive, as it’s the most cost-effective solution and easy to backup onto another drive as well.

Once you have an external drive, there are two methods for getting your photos in Lightroom copied over to it. I’ll walk you through each of these methods as well as the positive and negative aspects of each so you can decide which is right for you.

Method 1: Use Lightroom

This process works well if you don’t have a large photo library. It doesn’t involve a lot of heavy lifting on your part because you can do everything within Lightroom. If you have a lot of images (a few thousand or more), I’d recommend against this because I’ve read reports that it can become a little unreliable when working with that many files. Your mileage may vary though, but know that you ought to proceed with a bit of caution when using this method.

First, locate your Folders pane on the left side of the Library module of Lightroom. Then click the + button in the top-right corner and choose “Add Folder…” This is going to let you create a new folder for storing your images. In this case, navigate to your external drive and create a new folder at that location.

Navigate to your external drive and create a folder on it that you can use to store your pictures. In the screenshot below my external drive is called “Untitled” and my folder is called “Lightroom Pictures.”

Once done, you should see the new folder show up in Lightroom, but it will be empty. This action also creates a new folder on your external drive, which you can see if you navigate to the external drive using Finder or Windows Explorer.

The final step in moving your images from the internal drive to an external drive is to drag-and-drop them from Lightroom. From the Folders panel, click on a folder that you want to put on the external drive and drag it from your internal drive to the new folder you just created.

Click the Move button and Lightroom transfers everything over to the external drive, with no extra effort required on your part. If you have thousands of pictures, this could take a while. So be patient. In the end, your images will be on the external drive and also removed from your internal drive.

Method 2: Copy files manually

If you don’t mind doing a little bit of work yourself using Windows File Explorer or the Macintosh Finder, this is the option I generally recommend. That’s because it not only gives you the most control over the copying operation but helps you understand exactly where to locate your pictures. This method also lets you decide when to delete the original images on your internal drive because you copy them to your external drive instead of moving them. The first thing you need to do is navigate to your Library module within Lightroom and look for the Folders pane. This module tells you where to locate your image files on your computer.

I’ve got images in Lightroom going back to 2013, and each year’s pictures are stored in a separate folder on my hard drive.

Right-click, or control-click on a Mac, on the name of one of the folders in your Folders pane and choose the option that says “Show in Finder.” If you are using Windows, this says “Show in Explorer.” This takes you to the location on your computer where your images are stored.

If you have multiple folders with images in them, do this operation one at a time for each folder. In this example, I started with the 2013 folder in Lightroom, and selected “Show in Finder.” Then it brought up the actual folder on my computer labeled 2013 that contains my images from that year.

When you get to this step, right-click (or control-click) the folder and choose Copy. Then navigate to your external drive and choose Paste. This makes an exact duplicate of the folder on your external drive which might seem redundant, but this is only temporary. A bit later in the process, you can delete the original folder on your internal hard drive once you are sure that everything worked with the copy operation.

Repeat this copy/paste process for every folder listed in your Lightroom Folders pane. After you are finished copying everything to your external drive, rename the original folders by giving them a suffix such as “2013-Original” or “2013-Old.” Again, this is only temporary, and you end up just deleting these folders entirely. But for now, you don’t want to get ahead of yourself and start deleting folders before you are confident that everything has worked properly.

Locating your missing folders

After you rename the original folders, Lightroom may have a bit of a fit because it suddenly won’t be able to locate all your images! With the folder names changed, it won’t know where to look for your pictures even though they are all still intact. The next step is to tell Lightroom where to find your images on the external hard drive instead of looking on your original internal hard drive. As soon as you rename the original folder, the icon in Lightroom changes to a question mark since it no longer knows where to locate your pictures.

Right-click on the folder with a question mark and choose “Find Missing Folder” to rectify the situation.

In the screen that pops up next, navigate to the folder on your external hard drive where your pictures are. This is the folder you copied over at the start of this whole process, and its name should be unchanged. Select it, to make it show up in Lightroom. All your photos should be fully intact.

Repeat this process with all your folders. When finished, your images will have successfully migrated to the external drive. You can verify this by scrolling through your Lightroom library and looking for any images with a question mark. If you don’t see any, then everything is fine. If you do, then Lightroom is having trouble locating the original image, and you might need to double check that all your pictures have copied to the external drive successfully.

When you are satisfied that you have completed the operation without error, you are free to delete the original images on your internal drive. However, I’d recommend keeping a backup of them just in case. When it comes to photos, you can never have too many backups!

Catalog vs. Photos

It’s important to know that your Lightroom pictures are not the same as your Lightroom Catalog. The latter is a reference file which keeps track of all your edits to your pictures, leaving the originals fully intact and unchanged. I recommend keeping your Catalog on your internal hard drive since Lightroom uses this for all your editing operations and internal drives are likely to be faster than external drives. However, it’s up to you. If you’re not sure what to do, just don’t even think about it, since moving your Catalog to an external drive is an entirely separate operation altogether.

The Catalog stores all the changes to your images and only takes up a few gigabytes of space. Your actual images can take up hundreds or even thousands of gigabytes.

Remember to Backup

A final step in moving your pictures to an external drive is to make sure you have a good backup plan in place. If you are on a Mac and have your computer backed up via Time Machine, it will not automatically back up your external hard drives, and you might also find yourself quickly running out of space on your Time Machine backup drive. I recommend keeping a separate backup of your external hard drive and using a program like Carbon Copy Cloner to make sure you sync everything correctly.

Windows has options available as well, but the bottom line here is that you can never be too safe when it comes to backing up your images. Hopefully, this tutorial helps you understand how to go about reclaiming some of the space on your internal drive and setting yourself up for success in the long run when it comes to external storage options. However, all will be for naught if your images aren’t properly backed up and your computer fails.

Once you have all these pieces in place, it’s time to get off your computer, start shooting photos, and know that you’ve got plenty of storage space for years to come!

Researchers recover photos from a USB drive that spent a year frozen in seal poop

A USB flash drive recovered from frozen seal scat has been reunited with its owner, according to New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). The organization revealed its findings in a post early this week, when it stated that a functional USB drive with recoverable photos and at least one video had been found in thawed seal poo.

According to the NIWA, seal scat is ‘as good as gold’ for researchers who study the creatures. Volunteers with LeopardSeals.org collect these samples and ship them to the researchers, who then freeze them until they’re ready to analyze the droppings.

In November 2017, the NIWA says marine biologist Dr. Krista Hupman received a sample collected by a local vet. The scat was placed in a freezer, only to be removed last month by volunteers with the organization. The sample was defrosted, rinsed, and then broken apart to study.

Amid the expected findings was one concerning discovery: a USB flash drive. After being left out to dry, the researchers connected the drive and were surprised to recover images of sea lions, as well as a video showing the tip of a blue kayak and a mother and baby sea lion in the water.

NIWA shared the video on its Twitter account on February 4 in an attempt to reunite the USB drive with its owner.

The amusing story went viral, and it only took a day for owner Amanda Nally to claim her property, according to The Project NZ. The hardy USB drive’s make and model remain unknown, but it’s safe to say regardless of official specs the flash drive was indeed weather ‘sealed.’

Lexar’s new USB 3.0 flash drive uses your fingerprint to keep your photos safe

Lexar has announced a new flash drive that features a fingerprint reader to protect its content from unauthorised access. The JumpDrive Fingerprint F35 can record up to ten fingerprints to allow it to be shared between users, and it comes with the fingerprint software already loaded.

Lexar claims recognising a user’s fingerprint takes less than a second, and the drives have read speeds of up to 150MB/s. While normal memory is compatible with Mac, PC and Linux, the fingerprint software is Windows-only.

The JumpDrive Fingerprint F35 will be available in capacities of 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB and will cost €29.99/$ 32.99 (32GB), €44.99/$ 49.99 (64GB), €79.99/89.99 (128GB). The 256GB version will arrive later this year, and will cost €149.99/169.99. Each of the drives comes with a three-year limited warranty.
