Fujifilm developing 50mm F1.0 instead of planned 33mm F1.0

Alongside the announcement of the X-Pro 3, Fujifilm has said it is developing a 50mm F1.0 lens for its X-mount mirrorless cameras and cancelling the promised 33mm F1.0.

As part of the presentation, Fujifilm’s Head of Product Planning, Takashi Ueno said that the 33mm F1.0 had become too big and heavy as it was being developed. The latest prototype weighed 1300g (45.8oz), included 15 elements and necessitated the addition of a tripod foot.

Instead the company has said it will build a 50mm F1.0, that can be under 900g (31.7oz).

The result is a very different lens: a 75mm equivalent, rather than 50mm equiv. people were expecting. The two sponsored ‘X Photographers’ at the event suggested it could be useful for wedding and portrait photographers. One of these professionals, Bert Stephani, expressed a the hope that the company will re-work its XF 35mm F1.4: one of the first lenses in the X system, whose autofocus isn’t up to the same standard as the company’s more recent designs.

Ricoh is developing a flagship APS-C DSLR set to be released in 2020

An image Ricoh shared alongside the press release, presumably showing off a developmental version of its impending Pentax APS-C DSLR.

Ricoh has announced it’s developing a new flagship Pentax K DSLR camera with an APS-C sensor.

According to the press release, which is short and to the point, Ricoh will preview the camera at the ‘Pentax Meeting 100th Anniversary Special’ event that will be held in Japan on September 21, 2019. Ricoh says the camera is currently ‘under development for market launch in 2020,’ although no specific timeframe is given.

It’s been over a year-and-a-half since Ricoh announced the Pentax K-1 Mark II full-frame DSLR and over two-and-a-half years since its Pentax KP APS-C DSLR was announced. Rumors have been making their way through the grapevine that Pentax had something in store for 2019, but it seems we’ll have to wait until 2020 to see the new hardware.

Nikon developing D6 professional DSLR

Nikon has announced the D6, its forthcoming professional DSLR. Nikon and Canon tend to launch their flagship cameras around the time of the Olympic Games, which are occurring next summer in Tokyo.

Nikon has issued the photo above, and said it will be its ‘most advanced DSLR to date.’

Beyond this, it has shared no information about the camera, which it says will come at a later date. Now the countdown begins to see whether Canon will also update its top sports model with a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, or whether we’ll need to wait another four years for that.

Canon developing six new RF lenses, including ultra-compact 70-200 F2.8

Canon has announced the development of six RF lenses which are expected to be released at various points in 2019.

The most captivating has to be the RF 70-200 F2.8L IS USM. The lens is almost impossibly small, yet manages to be as fast as Canon’s EF model. The 70-200 will be stabilized, though we won’t find out how many stops of shake reduction it provides for some time, as Canon has not yet published specs for any of the upcoming lenses.

Canon will be offering two versions of its RF 85mm F1.2L USM: a ‘regular’ model and a ‘DS’ variant. DS stands for Defocus Smoothing, which Canon says ‘offers a combination of beautifully smooth defocused bokeh.’ While we don’t know exactly what that means yet, it seems likely that the DS model includes an Apodization element, of the kind we’ve seen before in ‘APD’ and ‘STF’ lenses from other manufacturers.

The dual model approach echoes Fujifilm’s decision to market two versions of its XF 56mm F1.2 – a standard model and an ‘APD’ variant optimized for bokeh.

Meanwhile, there are two fast zooms on the way: the RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM and the RF 24-70 F2.8L IS USM.

Lastly, there’s a versatile (but slower) travel zoom lens in the works too – the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM.

New Lenses Under Development Cover a Range of Core Focal Lengths

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 13, 2019 – Continuing with the message of “optics at its core,” Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc, is developing six new RF-series lenses, further displaying the company’s commitment to the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera system. Canon’s new RF mount allows for fast, light, and high-performing optics with a large opening diameter and short back focus distance. Each new lens in development will help fulfill the needs of amateur and advanced amateurs to professional photographers and videographers, covering critical focal lengths. In 2019, Canon’s already well-established optical lens heritage will celebrate a production milestone of 140 million EF and RF lenses and the celebration starts with the development announcement of these six lenses[i].

The six new RF lenses under development include:

“Optics are the critical piece of the visual puzzle that bend light and capture an image as the artist envisioned,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “That is why it is so important for us to strengthen our family of RF lenses for the EOS R camera system. With this collection of new lenses, customers will have more of the tools they need, for the images they desire to create.”

All six RF lenses under development are built around Canon’s new RF mount, which features a large 54mm diameter and shorter back focus distance than on current EOS DSLR cameras. In addition, the RF mount enhances communication and power transmission between the lens and camera body, which has helped Canon to achieve the world’s fastest autofocus speed for a full-frame mirrorless camera system[ii].

The details of the new Canon RF lenses under development are as follows:

The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM is a large aperture mid-telephoto prime lens. It offers excellent performance for advanced and professional portrait photographers and is a widely popular focal length and aperture speed combination for users.

The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM DS, with Defocus Smoothing lens technology, is a uniquely designed lens that offers a combination of beautifully smooth defocused bokeh. Featuring a super-fast F1.2 aperture, the lens will help produce breathtaking portraits that will surely stand out from the crowd.

The RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM is a high-performance, standard zoom lens for professionals and photo enthusiasts alike – ideal for shooting portraits, landscapes, documentaries or weddings.

Olympus developing 150-400mm F4.5 Pro lens with built-in 1.25X teleconverter

Olympus has announced the development of a pro-level super tele-zoom lens, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS Pro. This hefty lens will have a standard focal range of 300-800mm equiv. on Micro Four Thirds bodies, with a built-in 1.25X teleconverter increasing those numbers to 375-1000mm equiv., at the cost of 2/3-stop of light. If you want even more reach, the lens will also be compatible with Olympus’ new MC-20 2X teleconverter.

The lens will be stabilized and will work with the 5-axis IS systems built into modern Olympus cameras for extra shake reduction. As one would expect, it will be fully weather-sealed and Olympus claims it should function at temperatures as low as -10°C/+14°F.

The 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS Pro will be available in 2020, and pricing has not yet been disclosed.

Fujifilm developing 100MP medium format with phase detection and IBIS

Fujifilm has said it is developing a 100MP GFX medium format camera that will include both phase detection autofocus and in-body image stabilization. The 4K-capable camera will sell for around $ 10,000.

The development was announced at the company’s press conference at the Photokina trade show in Cologne, Germany, alongside the unveiling of the 50MP GFX 50R model.

A mockup on display at the event shows it to resemble a dual-grip variant of the existing GFX 50S model but without the protruding hump at the back of the body.

No details beyond these headline specs were made available but the company said the camera would be available in 2019.

Nikon developing compact and lightweight 500mm F5.6 lens

Nikon has announced the development of the FX-format AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F5.6E PF ED VR lens. It uses the same type of phase fresnel element as the company’s AF-S 300mm F4E PF ED VR, which is 30% shorter and more than 50% lighter than its predecessor. By design, a Phase Fresnel element reduces chromatic aberration introduced by traditional refractive elements, while also reducing the overall length required to achieve high focal length magnification. This usually results in a decrease in total number of lens elements, as well as in overall size and weight.

Nikon hasn’t divulged any specifics, and more details, pricing and availability will be announced later this year.

The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR will be a high-performance super-telephoto lens that is significantly smaller and lighter than comparable predecessors due to the adoption of the same type of Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element found in the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens, introduced in January 2015. Despite its 500mm focal length, the lens is small and light enough to use hand-held in a wide variety of situations where a photographer must capture unpredictable and fast-moving subjects, including sporting events and wildlife photography.

Phase Fresnel Lens Elements

The Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element developed by Nikon effectively compensates for chromatic aberration utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon*. Compared to many general camera lenses that employ an optical system using the photorefractive phenomenon, a remarkably compact and lightweight body can be attained with fewer lens elements.

Report: Samsung is developing a 1,000fps mobile image sensor

According to sources who spoke to Korean publication ETNews, Samsung is planning to kick its mobile camera technology up a notch with a 1,000fps smartphone camera sensor that will compete directly with Sony’s similar sensor. This technology is called a “3-layered image sensor,” and Samsung has reportedly ordered special equipment necessary to start producing the hardware in November. Smartphones featuring this technology, like the Sony Xperia XZ, can record super-slow-motion video.

ETNews, which has a good track record in relation to Samsung leaks, claims that this 3-layered image sensor is comprised of TSV stacking technology alongside a DRAM chip and system semiconductor. Pilot production of the image sensors will start in October, the sources claim, followed by mass production in November. By comparison, Samsung currently uses 2-layered image sensors in its newest flagship smartphones.

It is the DRAM chip for temporary data storage that will enable the mobile image technology to capture at 1,000fps, and as we mentioned earlier, Samsung won’t be the first company to develop this technology for mobile devices. Sony was the first to bring this 3-layered image sensor tech to commercial devices, though the sources say Samsung will use TSV stacking rather than thermal compression to avoid the costs that come with licensing other companies’ patents.

Questions remain about which Samsung smartphones will receive the new 3-layered image sensors. Assuming mass production does start this November, it is reasonable to assume we’ll see the sensors implemented into the next batch of Galaxy smartphones the company will unveil in 2018.

Tamron developing lightweight, compact 100-400mm F4.5-6.3 lens

Third-party lens maker Tamron has officially announced that it is working on a new tele-zoom lens for full-frame cameras: the 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A035).

Thanks to the use of magnesium in key areas of the barrel, Tamron claims the lens is both durable and, weighing in at just 1.12kg, the lightest in its class. The optical design incorporates three low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberration and Tamron’s eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) coating to minimize reflections and flare.

Tamron also included a high-speed Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) control system, which works in conjunction with Tamron’s Ultrasonic Silent Drive focusing motor to deliver AF speed and precision.

The lens will be compatible with Tamron’s 1.4X teleconverter and the Tamron TAP-in Console that lets you fine-tune and adjust focus and stabilization, among other parameters. An Arca Swiss compatible tripod mount will be available as an optional accessory.

If everything goes to plan, the 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD will be available by the end of 2017 in Canon and Nikon mount versions.

Sneak peek: Adobe is developing a ‘curvature pen tool’ for Photoshop CC

Adobe is working on a new tool for Photoshop CC called the “Curvature Pen Tool,” and earlier today the software maker released this sneak peek video to show you how it will work.

The tool—which will be added to “an upcoming release of Photoshop CC” according to Photoshop Product Manager Meredith Payne Stotzner—is very simple to use. It works by creating curved lines between points in your selection as you create a path. Each click adds a new point, clicking a point twice turns it into a sharp corner, and once your path is complete you can add, move and toggle points between rounded and sharp edges without ever changing to another tool.
