Guerrilla Signage: Designer Fixes Street Parking Sign Stacks

signage evolution deciphering

Anyone who has parked in a major metropolitan area has seen something like this: a vertical array of signs that provide a confusing (sometimes even self-contradictory) instructions about when you can park based on time of day or year, type of permit and other conditions.

crazy sign stack

sign hack test run

Nikki Sylianteng, having gotten one too many parking tickets, decided to do something about the problem, developing, refining and ultimately deploying a solution on the streets to get actual feedback.

Titled To Park or Not to Park, this ongoing project started as an independent and informal attempt to see if there were better options out there but has since progressed to a council motion in Los Angeles to test such signs in a more official capacity.

street sign send out

For additional feedback, Nikki has sent copies of the modified signage to people in other parts of California and Minnesota to see how they fare in different cities and settings.

Combining various signs into one, the time is presented along the y-axis and the date on the x-axis. Green bars indicate acceptable times to park and red bars are used to indicate otherwise. Sometimes additional complexity needs to be addressed when permits come into play or the school year is factored in the mix (not always corresponding just to days of the week).

sign stack analysis

From the project’s creator: “My strategy was to visualize the blocks of time when parking is allowed and not allowed. Everything else was kept the same, the colors, the form. My intention was to show how a small but thoughtful change can make a big difference by save drivers a lot of time, stress, and money. I tried to stay mindful of the constraints that a large organization like the Department of Transportation might face for this seemingly small change.”

Tribute To Fashion Designer Ruth Tarvydas

20 May

Ruth Tarvydas Tribute on Fashion Photography Blog - FashionPhotographyBlog.comThis weekend saw the mysterious passing of an Australian icon, Ruth Tarvydas. The Perth-based Lithuanian-born fashion designer had been known to produce glamorous and sexy evening dresses and special occasion gowns – quality garments that appear both sensuous and body hugging in their design.

She will always be remembered for accessorising her kohl eye liner and captain’s hat. Tarvydas, like her self-labelled designs, were adventurous and bold having expanded her label internationally, starting in Australia and expanding all over the globe such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the UK, France, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and the USA. Tarvydas was the first Australian fashion label to export overseas.

Her designs have also attracted the attention of celebrities in and outside of Australia, like Rihanna, Emma Watson, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Kelly Rowland, Kim Wyatt, Dani Minogue, Melanie B & Geri Halliwell (former Spice Girls), Rebecca Finch (Miss Universe), Rebecca Twigley, Cassie Davis, Natalie Bassingthwaite, as well as pop acts such as Javine and Girls Aloud. Age was no barrier for Tarvydas, even in her 60’s she was still designing for fashion shows.

I wanted to take the time to write a tribute to the designer and to share my condolences to her family and friends. I won’t spend too much detailing cause of death, as there is already enough media attention going around currently to covering that information, however all I can say is that there is an investigation that is currently being undertaken but the authorities are ruling out foul play.

What was known was that Tarvydas was struggling with financial hardship, made known when she was forced to close her flagship store in Perth in 2012. In the press she shared that high rental rates and ongoing road works had forced her business into administration.

This raises a point in my eyes. It’s really easy to believe that the fashion industry exists in a bubble, impervious to the socio-economic landscape happening all over the world but the reality is that the very nature of the fashion industry has always been influenced by the factor of change when you think about it.

Ruth Tarvydas Perth Fashion Show 2012 Fashion Photography Blog

Each fashion era at the time from the flappers in the Roaring Twenties to the excess shoulder pads of the 1980′s were a social reflection and commentary of the political and economic environment at the time.

With government policies constantly changing and rental rates continue to increase for commercial properties in inner city locations, such was the case for Tarvydas, the presence of physical retail stores are on the road to decline with the street filled with vacant lots as retail store owners are forced to either close up business, relocate into the suburban areas or to jump online as e-commerce stores.

One can witness that there is this mass exodus of businesses occurring and cannot help but wonder how this wave of businesses leaving the city centre going impact the fashion industry that have traditionally relied on stores to sell garments, let alone, how this will affect the greater economy. With the fluctuating state of local economies, even long standing iconic fashion labels like Tarvydas are susceptible to economic whims, and can stumble or even fall.

I want to once again dedicate this article to the late, Ruth Tarvydas, and hope that her family, friends and loved ones can find comfort during this sad time. I also want to thank Ruth Tarvydas for her contribution, support of the fashion community in Perth as well as assisting and mentoring upcoming and local fashion designers in Western Australia.

Bottle & Sell It: 14 Designer Bottles that Break the Mold

17 Apr

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

Designer Bottles Main

Most companies are primarily concerned with price when it comes to beverage and liquid product packaging, but what if designers were given free reign to tweak the standard designs so they’re more user-friendly? These 14 packaging design concepts solve annoyances like caps that are difficult to open, bottle shapes that force you to crane your neck to drink and the frustrating inability to reach those last drops of product in the bottom of a soap bottle.

Soft Hanging Soap and Shampoo Bottles

Designer Bottles Soft Hanging

Soft bottles with suction cups to attach them to the shower walls eliminate all the clutter that various toiletries can create in the bathroom. These bottles are made from cornstarch vinyl, so they’re easy to squeeze, and making them transparent may help distinguish between different types of products stored inside.

Easy Drink

Designer Bottles Easy Drink 1

This simple change in the standard water bottle design seems so obvious, it’s amazing that it hasn’t been implemented already. Moving the mouth of the bottle from the top to a 45-degree angle makes it much easier to drink and re-fill. No more craning your neck to get those last drops.

Dumbbell Bottle

Designer Bottles Dumbbell 2

Since you’re probably carrying a water bottle or sports drink while working out anyway, why not make it do more? The Dumbbell sports drink bottle won’t exactly get you ripped at just .5kg (1.1 pounds), but you could always fill it with something heavier when the drink is gone.

EasyOpen Tab-Pull Bottle Cap

Designer Bottles EasyOpen

Sometimes you’re caught without a bottle opener, and using your teeth isn’t exactly a good idea unless you’re willing to part with them. What if bottle caps had little easy-pull tabs on them? The ‘EasyOpen’ concept would certainly do what the name suggests.

Aqua Jar Turns Bottles into Pitchers

Designer Bottles Aqua Jar

The Aqua Jar by GH Lab extends the life of a plastic bottle by turning it into an easy-pour pitcher. It’s made from biodegradable and recyclable plastic, and fits the universal coil of any plastic bottle.

Eco Coke

Designer Bottles Eco Coke

“Same classic design, just greener,” says Andrew Kim, designer of the Eco Coke bottle. So what makes it different – and superior – to the current bottle design? Aside from being 100% plant-based, this bottle is also collapsible, making it easier to keep it on hand until a recycling bin is nearby. Since it has a smaller footprint, space for nearly two additional bottles is recovered within standard boxes.

Retap

Designer Bottles Retap

While some people will reuse plastic bottles a few times, they’re awkward to clean, and can leach chemicals into the water over time. Glass is safer – and nicer-looking. Retap is a designer water bottle concept that’s easily refillable, without any sharp corners to make cleaning difficult.

Futuristic Fashion: 35 Out-of-this-World Designer Looks

28 Jan

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

Futuristic Fashion main

Looking straight out of a gritty sci-fi movie, these 35 futuristic and sometimes bizarre high-fashion looks envision a future of metallic artificial hair, dresses that dispense actual cocktails, accordion-like protective headgear and outfits that would fit right in on an alien runway.

Metallic Hair by Junya Watanabe

Futuristic Fashion Metallic Hair Junya Watanabe

Human hair is replaced with sharp, shiny headwear in Junya Watanabe’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Functional helmets they’re not, and they certainly look a bit odd to our eyes, but imagine just pulling this thing onto your head every morning and walking out the door rather than spending time styling your hair.

Fashion Technogenesis by DZHUS

Futuristic Fashion DZHUS 1

Futuristic Fashion DZHUS 2

Ukrainian designer Irina Dzhus is certainly thinking outside the fashion box with her DZHUS concept collection, presenting pieces of clothing as ‘metaphysical objects.’ For all their striking weirdness, many of these garments appear to be quite practical, transforming or offering hidden storage. It’s not hard to imagine the accordion-like headgear being incorporated into a functional rain suit of some sort.

Hypnosis Collection by Ara Jo

Futuristic Fashion Ara Jo

The ‘Hypnosis’ collection by young designer Ara Jo looks like something out of a strange dream, especially the garments that stretch over the wearer’s heads and necks. Some look like medieval torture devices. Unsurprisingly, these looks caught the eye of fashion stylist Nicola Formichetti, who chose one for Lady Gaga.

Sharp and Monochromatic Looks from Gareth Pugh

Futuristic Fashion Gareth Pugh 1

Futuristic Fashion Gareth Pugh 2

Few designers deliver such consistently dark, futuristic and beautifully bizarre looks season after season as does Gareth Pugh. The Paris-based, London-born designer is known for his performance art approach to fashion, which frequently includes wearable sculptures and is based on visual themes like the apocalypse, aliens and carnivals.

14 Designer Dog Houses: Curating Posh Pup Architecture

04 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Famous architects have been known to dabble in other design disciplines, from furniture and interiors to products and packaging, but what happens when you task international icons like MVRDV and Toyo Ito with creating buildings for man’s best friend?

Beyond the cute facade of these canine dwellings, organized by Kenya Hara (images by Hiroshi Yoda), is a broader purpose: to provide free plans to pet owners who wish to replicate these structures in their own home.

Konstantin Grcic also plays to a particular breed – the poodle, famous for identifying its own reflection (and popularly known as a posh bread of puppy – perhaps reflecting the vanity of certain owners), gets its own light-up, dressing-room-style mirror to bask by.

Shigeru Ban, ever the fan of corrugated cardboard, has scaled down his approach to make a series of dog-sized space dividers.

Atelier Bow-Wow also had a specific species in mind for their creation: a ramp for smaller dogs that have difficulty walking up stairs or steep slopes, and which leads up to a level that allows them to sit face to face with their owner.

Other designs include mobile shelters, or roofs that serve as climbable landscapes, some patterned around a given type of dog and others based on the broader nature of the species.
