London Fashion Week just wrapped up, and a lot of the people I follow on social media were there, taking over brands’ social media accounts, taking pictures, looking good. I spent most of the past four days sitting around at home with absolutely no plans to go anywhere, and I think if you’d touched me, my relief would have actually Continue Reading

I’m currently sitting on a comfy chair in my bedroom with absolutely no plans to go anywhere this weekend, and I think if you touched me my relief would actually rub off Continue Reading

Nikon sets aside 1.8 billion yen to cover D600 warranty repairs

03 Jun

nikon_d600.png

Nikon has revealed that it allocated ¥1.8bn (~ $ 17.6m / £10.5m) to cover the cost of warranty repairs and replacements for its D600 SLR in the last financial year. The camera has been plagued since its launch by a tendency to accumulate oil spots on its sensor, resulting in Nikon offering to replace the shutter mechanism or even the entire camera for free if necessary. In an investor relations statement on its website, the company says that it is taking the matter very seriously, and ‘will be taking steps to restore confidence in the Nikon brand’.

About a week prior to Monday’s running of the Boston Marathon, and a year after the bombing at the 2013 marathon, photographer Gregory Heisler addressed a crowd of thousands gathered at the finish line. The group included runners, first responders and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, all ready to pose for Sports Illustrated’s ‘Boston Strong’ cover photo. Directing the crowd through a megaphone and standing on a raised platform, Heisler captured a portrait of 3,000 proud, resilient Bostonians. Take a peek behind the scenes of this large scale photo shoot. Learn more

Recovering Literature: Bold Classic Book Cover Redesigns

10 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

classic power of books

It takes a powerful book to survive decades or even centuries and stay prominently in the public eye. This pair of classics are a rarity in that respect, but like any books, one thing does change over time: their covers.

classic book cover remodel

First, Fahrenheit 451, reintroduced by designer Elizabeth Perez. In her words, it is “a novel about a dystopian future where books are outlawed and firemen burn any house that contains them. The story is about suppressing ideas, and about how television destroys interest in reading literature.”

classic fahrenheit 451 redesign

And what would be more apt than a book cover and binding that reflects that horrific world? The one becomes a match, and the spine becomes a striking surface, powerfully reinforcing the core message of the novel.

classic censorship cover concept

Then we have 1984,  part of a series of re-releases from Penguin designed by David Pearson – again, the message of censorship becomes boldly emblazoned right on the cover of the volume.

classic book smell perfume

But with physical books being, perhaps an endangered species, maybe you would like something new to swap into your collection but that also breaks traditional boundaries. Introducing: Paper Passion, a scent from Stiedl. It is a fragrance based on the smell of books – a powerful scent familiar with anyone who has revisited their childhood favorites.

(Cover) Lemon Tree – Fools Garden – One Man Band by Miguel P. Senent

05 Feb

Well, here is something I’ve been working on these last two weeks in my spare time. This song is simply awesome, everybody knows that, so I decided to do a full one man band cover 🙂 I started transcribing every sound I could hear in the original song, but I arranged it to be played using various instruments that are clearly not used in it, like my old Oboe, which I hadn’t played since I dropped it when I was 14! haha I recorded everything into REAPER using an M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface and the t.bone SC600. The electric guitars, bass, piano and synth were plugged directly into the interface via line in. Sadly I don’t own any drum set, so I had to do that using Addictive Drumms, a really cool vst plug-in. Guitar Rig 4 was used for both electric guitars and bass. The video was recorded using my Nikon D90 and edited in Sony Vegas. I hope you enjoy! And don’t forget to subscribe 😉 And thanks to my friend Jordi for the bass guitar!

Train – Marry Me (Cover by Michelle Lam)

31 Jan

Marry Me by Train Covered by Michelle Lam Please like and subscribe! Hi everyone. This one’s no where near perfect, you can hear the birds chirping outside my window and you can even hear my mum calling me from downstairs towards the end. ZOMG the upload for the high quality video just decided to abort itself and so now I have to upload a lower quality version. But it’s been so long since I’ve uploaded a cover. Amanda, I’m sorry I no longer sound like a little girl. =( A while back, you requested that I learn this song. So a month and a half overdue, here it is. For those of you who want guitar tabs/chords, I learnt them by ear on the evening that my friend requested the song, so I’m not sure if they’re all correct. But I just took a look around and these tabs look very good: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com Hope you all enjoyed the video =) xx michelle
