The cameras inside the iPhone Xs and Xs Max are estimated to cost $51.10

The cost benchmarking team at analyst firm IHS Markit has dissected an iPhone Xs Max in order to estimate the cost of components. For the 64GB version the team has calculated an estimated total bill of material (BOM) $ 390, a $ 20 increase from the smaller, previous-generation iPhone X.

With a starting price of $ 1,099 at the retail end of the supply chain this $ 20 increase in component cost translates into a $ 100 increase of retail pricing, however. As a comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ with 64GB of RAM has a BOM of $ 375.80 and retails at around $ 840.

The total cost of camera components inside the new iPhone models (the iPhone Xs and Xs Max use the exact same camera components) amounts to $ 51.10. This estimated total includes the two cameras on the rear of the device, the front-facing camera and the TrueDepth sensor used for FaceID, Apple’s face recognition feature. Without the TrueDepth module, the cost of the two 12-megapixel cameras on the rear of the camera and the 7-megapixel front-facing camera comes out to an estimated price tag of $ 37.60.

Combined, all of the camera components inside iPhone Xs and Xs Max devices represent approximately 13 percent of the total BOM, showing camera technology is becoming even more important on newer smartphones. On the single-camera iPhone 7 from 2016 the total cost of all camera components was only 9.6 percent of the total.

Leaked: GoPro to reveal entry-level ‘HERO’ action cam this week, will cost $200

A major leak earlier today confirmed what rumors have been claiming for over a week: GoPro is preparing to release an entry-level version of its HERO action cam. The new camera—ostensibly just called the GoPro HERO—will feature the same styling as its high-end HERO6 sibling but, thanks to some pared down specs, is allegedly priced between $ 180-$ 200.

According to this leaked PDF courtesy of Nokishita, the GoPro HERO will shoot 1080/60p and 1440/60p video as well as 10MP stills at up to 10fps, can capture timelapse video at 0.5 second intervals, is waterproof to 10m (~33 feet) out of the box, and features a 2-inch touchscreen on the back.

The PDF (which is in French) also specifies that the camera features WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, voice control, and compatibility with GoPro’s one-touch Quik Stories highlight video creation in the GoPro app.

The leak does not cover price or release date; however, Photo Rumors is reporting that the new HERO camera—also seen in the leaked images above—will cost between $ 180 and $ 200, and Nokishita writes that the HERO will be announced on March 30th. Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art will cost just $1,300, seriously undercuts Nikon

When Sigma announced the 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art lens, the company held off on sharing pricing or availability. Fortunately, Sigma didn’t make us wait long, revealing today that the ultra-wide angle zoom will ship in mid-March for the very reasonable price of $ 1,300.

Sigma is not being bashful about this lens. The press release announcing the price and availability of the new Art lens reads:

Designed for 50-megapixel plus cameras, the 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art achieves the legendary Art lens sharpness with three FLD glass elements, three SLD glass elements, and three aspherical lens elements, including one 80mm high precision molded glass aspherical element. With near zero distortion (less than 1%) and minimal transverse chromatic aberration, flare and ghosting, the new Sigma 14-24mm offers constant F2.8 brightness throughout the zoom range and delivers optimal image quality at every focal length and shooting distance. The high-speed, high-accuracy autofocus allows photographers to capture incredible, in-the-moment images that set a new standard in the era of outstanding high-resolution.

The lens is available in Canon, Nikon, and Sigma mounts, with the Canon version boasting compatibility with Canon’s Lens Aberration Correction function and the Nikon version featuring a brand new electromagnetic diaphragm. It seems Canon users have a new ultra-wide zoom option, while Nikon users have been handed 600 very good reasons to consider the brand-new Sigma over Nikon’s own 11-year-old AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm F2.8G ED that goes for $ 1,900.

Google’s long-awaited Clips Camera hits stores, will cost you $250

If you’ve been desperately waiting for Google’s artificial intelligence-driven Clips camera to go on sale now is your moment. The company has added the video clip shooting device to its store for US customers at the expected $ 250 price tag, with delivery expected between the end of February and the beginning of March.

The lifelogging camera was first revealed at the Pixel 2 event in October. It’s designed to recognize the best moments and composition, and to shoot automatically when it ‘thinks’ the occasion is right. The aptly named Clips camera shoots short ‘clips’ of video which can be reviewed in a Google Clips app. In the app, clips can be saved or deleted, and still images can be extracted from the clips as well.

The 12MP camera has a shutter button too for human driven activation, but the main idea is that it is placed somewhere it can see what’s going on, and it does all the work for you. The main idea is that using Clips in its automatic ‘intelligent’ mode allows the user to be in the pictures instead of having to be behind the camera.

Below is a sample clip posted to the Google blog, with the video captured by the camera on the left and the still extracted from the video on the right. Stills are extracted using the Google Clips app.

The camera can record at 15fps, and uses a lens with a 130° angle of view. Images are stored in the 16GB internal memory, and the camera can run for three hours on a single charge. Connection is via USB-C, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

As reported before, professional photographers were consulted to help the company understand what makes a good or a bad picture, so the after analyzing what’s happening and where the elements are in the frame, the device’s brain decides whether to record or not. The camera also learns about the people you mix with, and will take more clips of people it sees often, as it will assume they are closer to you. Thankfully, it will also get to know your cat, to save you the bother of photographing it yourself.

Panono’s new owner offers camera to original backers at production cost

Despite raising about $ 1.25 million in a crowdfunding campaign, now-defunct company Panono GmbH went bankrupt after failing to deliver its 360-degree camera to many of the people who had backed the product. The company was bought by the Swiss-based private equity investor Bryanston Group, which acquired most of its assets but none of its obligation to Indiegogo backers.

Bryanston Group AG has brought back the Panono camera under a new holding company called Professional GmbH. Despite stressing that it doesn’t have any “liability or obligation” resulting from its assets acquisition, the company has said that it feels it has “a moral obligation to compensate the project’s early supporters.” For that reason, the company is offering the project’s original backers the opportunity to purchase the resurrected Panono camera at production cost.

About 2,000 Indiegogo backers who received neither refund or camera have been sent this offer, according to the company, which says the production cost is about half-off the camera’s retail price. In addition, these former backers are also offered unrestricted access to Panono’s cloud features, which is said to have about a $ 600 value.

According to the Verge, this discounted rate means backers who take up the offer will pay around $ 1,120 to $ 1,240 for the production-cost camera bundles available. This is on top of the $ 500 or more these backers already spent on the camera (they never received) as a pledge during the original Indiegogo campaign.

Professional GmbH is limiting discounted Panono camera sales to 50 units per month; customers are limited to one discounted camera each. The Panono website lists the Panono camera set, which includes a case, stick, tripod adapter, and messenger bag, at 1899€ / $ 2,250. Cheaper alternatives exist, though not necessarily with comparable specs, such as the Ricoh Theta V.

The Voigtländer Nokton classic 35mm F1.4 for E-Mount ships in February, will cost $750

Sony shooters will have a new manual-focus lens to play with soon. After announcing the lens as ‘in-development’ way back in February, Cosina Japan has revealed pricing and availability for the E-Mount Voigtlander Nokton classic 35mm F1.4 lens. According to the translated webpage, the lens is scheduled to ship in February of 2018, at a price of ¥ 85,000, or approximately $ 750 USD.

This, just a couple of weeks after announcing pricing and availability for another E-Mount Nokton that was “in-development” in February: the Nokton 40mm F1.2.

The Nokton classic 35mm F1.4 is an E-mount version of the M-mount Nokton that Voigtländer has been selling for many years, and we actually got to see this lens in person at CP+ last February. Unfortunately, the 35mm was the only lens under glass that day, so we couldn’t get a true ‘hands-on,’ but we expect it to be built to the same high standard as the older M-mount version.

A fully loaded iMac Pro will cost you $13,200

It’s official! As we reported yesterday morning, the iMac Pro is now officially on sale in the United States, starting with the two base models—the 8-core and 10-core variations—and a price tag of $ 5,000 for the ‘standard configuration.’

Up until now, that’s the only price we knew for this behemoth of a computer—what Apple calls “the most powerful Mac ever”—but now that the iMac Pro website is official and the product is up in the store, we can find out how much a fully loaded version costs. And let’s just say you should hold on to your wallets.

If you go to Apple’s store website and trick out the computer, going all the way up to the 2.3GHz 18-core Intel Xeon W Processor with Turbo Boost up to 4.3GHz, 128GB of 2666MHz DDR4 ECC memory, a 4TB SSD, and a Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics card with 16GB of its own HBM2 memory, your price tag goes up to.

Drum roll please…

$ 13,200

If you do one of the more basic configurations, you’ll be able to get yours in the next 1-2 weeks. However, if you plan to shell out the aforementioned $ 13,200 for the fully-loaded 18-core beast, don’t expect to get the computer in 2017. According to the Apple store website, a fully loaded variation will ship in 6-8 weeks.

Gates unveils underwater housing for RED cinema cameras, will probably cost around $15K

You’d have to be pretty brave to immerse your $ 50K RED cinema camera beneath the waves—or very sure of the quality of your underwater housing. Fortunately, underwater specialist Gates has been making housings for cinema cameras since 1969, and they just released their newest (not their first…) housing for RED cameras last week.

The new Pro Explore from Gates Underwater Products is designed for Red’s DSMC2 series of bodies, and thus will look after and allow access to the controls of the Weapon, Epic-W, Scarlet-W and Red Raven cameras.

The company hasn’t released any detailed spec yet, but claims the new housing is lightweight and easy to transport and that small PL lenses and DSLR lenses can fit within its domed ports. There’s a rear door for quick access to memory and the battery, and 14 assignable buttons to control the camera’s features.

Gates says the Pro Explore will come with a housing for an external monitor as well as tool kits, spare parts and cables.

The Gates Pro Explore will go on sale in the next month or so, but the price has yet to be announced. I can’t imagine it will be cheap. The Pro Action housing, which can go to 200ft, costs around $ 15,000.

Sigma’s new 16mm F1.4 will cost $450, ships this month

We got to see the 16mm F1.4 DC DN |Contemporary lens in person at the PhotoPlus Expo last month.

Just before the PhotoPlus Expo in October, Sigma teased crop-sensor Sony E-Mount and M43 shooters with a new lens: the 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary. We got to see this “in development” lens for ourselves at the expo, and were left very impressed by its build quality, but had no idea how much it would cost or when it would arrive on the market.

Until now.

Announced earlier today, the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary will cost $ 450 and is scheduled to ship at the end of November. For Sony users, this lens represents a ‘world’s first’: “the first lens offered for Sony E-mount systems to feature a 24mm F1.4 focal length (35mm equivalent) and aperture.” On Micro Four Thirds systems, it provides a 32mm equivalent focal length.

Shooting with a used DSLR kit that cost me just $80

Cameras and lenses are expensive. Really expensive. Even the cheapest entry-level DSLR kit today costs $ 500 and upwards. But what if you would buy the cheapest possible used DSLR? A camera that is over 10 years old? How would it stack up against today’s modern cameras? I was curious about this, and decided to find out for myself.

After two weeks of watching classified ads closely, and missing a couple of good bargains because I wasn’t fast enough, I finally managed to purchase a Canon 400D(also known as Rebel XTi) with a battery grip and a Canon 50mm f1.8 II lens on it. All this for only $ 80. It seemed like a great deal to me. It even came with a 2GB CF card!

I took the camera for a long walk the same day I bought it, and to summarize my experience: I was amazed by how good it was!

The sensor outputs 10 megapixel photos, meaning that they measure roughly 3900×2600 pixels. This is more than enough for posting on social media or viewing photos on a computer screen. And what amazed me even more, was that with a fairly good lens, which the Canon 50mm F1.8 is, these pixels get utilized very well. A 100% crop looks very crisp and sharp in most cases.

The only major downside with using an 11-year-old camera is that the dynamic range in the sensor falls far short of my modern Sony A7. If you do not nail the exposure really well when you take the photo, you have far less latitude to correct it later. With my modern cameras I just shoot everything slightly underexposed, and lift the exposure later in Lightroom. That would not be a good idea with the Canon 400D.

This camera’s weak dynamic range also makes it hard to capture scenes with strong light and deep shadows in the same frame. But other than that, this $ 80 camera kit has already, after a couple of days, given me a lot of photography joy for the money. I will definitely keep this camera—it’s a fun tool to take out once in a while to add some variation to my photo walks.

This little experiment taught me that if you just want a good camera to take nice looking photos in your everyday life, and you don’t have professional needs (such as 50 megapixel files) $ 80 will take you surprisingly far. And as an added benefit, 10 megapixel files give you such a swift and fast editing experience in Lightroom!
