Canon patent application details hybrid speedlight with active cooling via internal fan

A recent patent application from Canon details the schematics for a hybrid speedlight that has built-in cooling for keeping the speedlight cool with continuous use.

Japanese patent application 2019-185021 shows various ways in which a fan underneath the flash head of the speedlight would pull in air from the ambient environment, direct it over the front of the main flash tube and cycle it out to keep temperatures at a more manageable level. Interestingly, the patent also shows a pair of LED lights above and below the main flash tube, the reason we consider this a ‘hybrid’ speedlight.

Various illustrations in the patent show how the air would be channeled through the flash head depending on where the flash tube is located inside the speedlight. This particular example shows how the air would flow in front of the flash tube (and LED lights, labeled 102 and 104) and cycle out of the speedlight via the empty space behind the flash head and LED lights.

The patent doesn’t specify whether or not the cooling mechanism is more for the main flash tube or the LED lights. But, considering fans aren’t necessarily a requirement on traditional speedlights and the incredible amount of heat LEDs can put out — especially in a confined package without much passive cooling — we believe it would make the most sense that this fan would run at times when the LED lights would be on for extended periods of time, where heat could built up without the chance to dissipate in a reasonable timeframe.

As noted by Canon News, who first broke down the patent, the detailed drawings and tech specifications for this speedlight indicate that quite a bit of work has gone into it already. As with all patents, it might never see the light of day, but it’s an interesting concept nonetheless.

ZTE Nubia Red Magic 3 comes with 8K video recording and cooling fan

Just like their computer-counterparts, gaming smartphones are more powerful than your average device in order to smoothly run the latest hardware-hungry games and applications.

With the new Nubia Red Magic 3 Chinese manufacturer ZTE is taking things to a new extreme, however, by building a cooling fan into the handset, in addition to a copper heatsink. The company says the fan can spin up to 14,000 rpm but still runs quietly. Overall the phone’s heat transfer performance is a claimed five times better than conventional passive cooling. So, if you’ve ever found your phone to run hot, or even crash, while playing the latest mobile blockbuster, this might be just the device for you.

The Red Magic 3 comes with some other features that are typically limited to gaming devices, such as customizable capacitive shoulder triggers and an RGB LED strip on the back, but otherwise offers pretty conventional flagship smartphone specifications. This includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage and a very beefy 5,000mAh battery. Gameplay (or photos) are viewed on a 6.65-inch FHD+ AMOLED HDR display.

Despite clearly being targeted at gamers, the Nubia has something quite unique to offer in the camera department as well; it is the first smartphone to come with 8K video recording. Additionally, the camera can record slow-motion video at a whopping 1,920 frames per second although no resolution has been specified yet for this ultra-slow-motion mode. In terms of camera hardware the Nubia comes with a single-camera that uses a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor and an F1.7 aperture, but lacks optical image stabilization.

So, while other camera specs aren’t anything out of the extraordinary the 8K option should make the Nubia interesting to anyone who is creating high-resolution video. It will launch in China on May 3rd and start from approximately $ 430 for the version with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. The top-of-the-line model with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage will set you back $ 640. A launch in other regions, including the US, Canada and Europe is scheduled for the end of May but no pricing information is available yet.

Cooling Cities: L.A. is Painting Streets White to Combat Heat Island Effects

Thanks in part to heat-absorbing materials and colors, cities tend to be warmer than their natural surroundings, and in hot places with lots of dark roads like Los Angeles that can prove a serious public health hazard.The mayor has pledged to reduce temperatures in the city by 3 degrees over the next 20 years, in part by dealing with urban heat island effects in new and different ways.

As part of this promise to help make bring down temperatures for its millions of residents, LA is trying something that could dramatically change its urban landscape: repainting roads in white. The aim is to reflect rather than absorb heat and so far the results are extremely promising.

“We found that on average the area covered in CoolSeal is 10 degrees cooler than black asphalt on the same parking lot,” said Greg Spotts, the assistant director of the Bureau of Street Services for San Fernando Valley, an area with particularly severe heat problems.

It’s not just about open public spaces either: reducing exterior temperatures has impacts on adjacent interiors. Heat reductions outside and mean cooler spaces inside area homes and businesses. In turn, this can help residents and owners save on cooling costs. It also isn’t just a daytime problem: heat captured during the day is released into the night air, keeping things hotter around the clock.

The process doesn’t come cheap, however: each coat lasts for around seven years but prices out around $ 40,000 per linear mile. If it works, though, the cost could be offset in part by savings on other fronts, in addition to making for a more healthy metropolis all around. Meanwhile, other strategies are also in play — the city is looking to make roofs brighter, for instance, and bring more green into the mix. (via Inhabitat and L.A. Power struggle: Hauntingly beautiful images of abandoned cooling towers

A look inside active and abandoned cooling towers

Belgian photographer Reginald Van de Velde has made a project of exploring the inner workings and mechanisms of some of Europe’s awe-inspiring, dormant giants: cooling towers. His images document both active and decommissioned cooling towers, as well as towers slated for demolition.

The interiors of the towers yield astonishing vistas, and as they’re abandoned he’s able to enter explore them, document and admire them. In his imagery he searches for patterns, a sense of scale, repetition, and disruption, rendering landscapes within the massive structures.

‘One thing that fascinates me extremely is the fact that not a single cooling tower is the same,’ Van de Velde says. ‘Each and every one of them has a unique interior design and build! They all look the same from the exterior, but with each visit to a new cooling tower I’m always surprised by a different interior, time and time again.’
