MIOPS launches Kickstarter campaign for Flex, its featured-packed smart camera gadget

MIOPS, makers of the Smart Trigger and Mobile Remote, is back on Kickstarter with another new product designed to make it easier than ever to capture unique images. The Flex is a ‘smart camera gadget’ photographers can use to create timelapse videos, capture photos of lightning strikes, breaking glass and more.

Flex attaches to your camera’s hot shoe and communicates wirelessly with an accompanying app for iOS and Android. Flex offers many different features and shooting modes, including:

As you can see, timelapse is an important aspect of Flex’s feature set. As MIOPS says, ‘Flex is one of the most powerful devices for making timelapse videos.’ A large part of what makes Flex such a promising tool for timelapse creation is that the application shows you a live preview of your timelapse video during the shooting process. When capturing a timelapse in changing conditions, Flex can automatically change your camera’s settings as well, allowing you to capture a ‘holy-grail timelapse,’ which is a timelapse with smooth day-to-night and night-to-day transitions. For high-speed photography, such as capturing lightning strikes or capturing the perfect moment of action, Flex incorporates numerous helpful features. When photographing lightning, Flex automatically captures photos as soon as its sensor detects lightning. For photographing something such as a popping balloon, breaking glass, or a falling object, Flex includes a sound-activated shooting mode and it has a laser sensor that can be tripped to trigger image capture.

Flex includes new features for more traditional photography applications as well. From the Flex app, you can remotely adjust your camera’s settings and capture images. MIOPS says, ‘Go ahead – put your camera in hard-to-reach places to get that amazing angle.’ With customizable shutter speed control, Flex can also be used to capture very long exposure images, beyond what your camera can capture on its own. Further, you can see what your camera sees via live view from your smartphone.

VALOI 360 Kickstarter campaign promises affordable way to digitize film

A new Kickstarter campaign for VALOI 360 promises to deliver an affordable, high-quality way to digitize rolls of 35mm and medium format film.

VALOI 360, which is over halfway toward its roughly $ 74,000 USD goal, is a system of modular physical components you can use to digitize 35mm and 120mm film negatives using a digital camera. There are three main components in the 360 system. There is the VALOI 360 35mm Holder. The holder keeps 35mm film flat while allowing for a backlight to shine through. It is constructed of injection-molded plastic and has an S-curve film path to flatten the film without touching the image area.

The other holder, the VALOI 360 120 Holder, holds 120 medium format film up to 6 x 9cm frames. Like the 35mm holder, it allows light to shine through, is made of injection-molded plastic, and has an S-curve film path. Both holders also include rubber dome feet to make sure the holder sits flat on the light source underneath.

The third component is the VALOI 360 Film Advancer upgrade. You place a film holder inside the Film Advancer and the advancer allows you to quickly forward to the next frame by rotating a knob. The frame and axle are made of steel and the rollers are rubber. It comes with screw-in rubber feet with long threads which can be used for leveling. As part of the Kickstarter campaign, the Film Advancer upgrade is only available alongside holders, but VALOI plans to sell it separately later.

To use the VALOI 360, you must have a digital camera (or, in a pinch, even a smartphone) and a light source. An ideal setup involves a digital camera, tripod, and a stable, color-consistent light source. The VALOI 360 holds your film flat, you capture an image of the film and if you’re digitizing a negative, you use a computer to invert and process it. The primary challenge that VALOI hopes to overcome with its 360 system is how to hold film flat and stable in front of a light source. This is the problem that VALOI founder, Arild, first tried to address with various prototypes. Arild used plywood, acrylics, LEGO components and more in pursuit of building something affordable and easy to use when digitizing film. He even learned how to build 3D CAD designs. Mechanical engineer Wicher van Lambalgen, VALOI co-founder, came on board to turn Arild’s ideas and early designs into a commercially viable prototype.

Assuming the campaign reaches its funding goal, by pledging €19 backers will receive the VALOI 35mm Holder. For €29, you can select the 120 Holder. The €44 pledge includes the VALOI Holder Pack, which includes both the 35mm and 120 film holders. For photographers wanting the VALOI 360 Film Advancer, you must step up to the VALOI 35mm Kit at €129 (the €139 kit includes the 120 Holder instead). A full kit with all three components is also available for €179. All pledge options include a scanning tutorial to help beginners learn how to best use the VALOI 360 system to scan their film. CAMERADACTYL creator launches Kickstarter campaign offering camera files for 3D printers

Ethan Moses, creator of the Homonculus 69 camera introduced last summer, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for CAMERADACTYL Brancopan, a 3D-printed panoramic camera that supports Mamiya Press lenses and 35mm film. Specifically, Moses is seeking funds to cover the costs of releasing the STL files for the camera, enabling 3D printer owners to print and assemble their own cameras.

In his Kickstarter campaign, Moses explains that increased demand for his cameras has resulted in considerable time spent printing, assembling and shipping the units. This has taken up time that would otherwise be spent researching and developing additional cameras.

According to Moses, if the Kickstarter campaign reaches its $ 12,000 initial goal, he will release the STL files for the Brancopan camera to Kickstarter backers first, then, later on, he will release them to the general public on May 1, 2020. As well, the files will be joined by videos that teach DIYers how to print the components, assemble the camera, calibrate it and then use it.

Moses explains on Kickstarter:

This Kickstarter is my shot in the dark, my test to see if people will pay for the R&D on an open-source project in a specific way. I am not sure that this will work, or how people will feel about it, but I do know that if the Kickstarter should fail, nobody gets charged anything and I can always go back to selling cameras through the mail, but if it does work it could change the way I work and the projects that I get to tackle, and the types of cameras and photographic tools available to the public now, and in the future.

The released files, assuming the campaign progresses to that point, will be licensed for personal use only. The estimated delivery date for Kickstarter backers is January 2020. Some Kickstarter pledge options include laser cut film counter dials, video chat troubleshooting and more.

Kickstarter campaign seeks funding for Alter RFS, a hinged lens filter adapter

Alter has launched a Kickstarter funding campaign for Alter RFS, a Rapid Filter System that attaches lens filters to a camera via a hinged adapter. The Alter RFS friction hinge supports 270 degrees of rotation, enabling photographers to lower a filter over the lens when needed, then quickly lift it out of the way again.

Alter RFS, which is made out of milled anodized aerospace aluminum, features a magnet for sealing the filter over the lens and a light shield for preventing light leaks. The adapter supports existing lens filters with universal threads and can be rotated to move the hinge to the ideal position for the user’s needs (from the top to the side of the lens, for example).

The friction hinge prevents the filter from falling back down over the lens even during rough camera movements. Alter plans to offer the Rapid Filter System in filter sizes 40.5mm to 105mm, as well as an RFS+ adapter model that includes a built-in step-up.

Alter is offering Kickstarter backers various discounts for pledging funds to the campaign, with those discounts starting at $ 67 USD for a single Alter RFS up to $ 59 USD each for three units and $ 55 USD for any additional units beyond that. The company anticipates a retail price of $ 79 USD, assuming the campaign is successful and the product is brought to market. Shipments to backers are estimated to start in September.

LIT wireless xenon flash Kickstarter campaign cancelled after project reevaluation

The Kickstarter funding campaign for the LIT wireless xenon flash has been canceled. The team behind the device detailed their decision to end the funding in a post published on the Kickstarter update page, where they state, ‘After doing some additional calculations during the campaign, we realized we won’t be able to make it a reality with just our initially set funding goal and newly uncovered product ambitions.’

As DPReview reported last month, the LIT wireless xenon 40W flash was intended for use with a smartphone, and would have—if everything had gone according to plan—included a built-in rechargeable battery capable of powering 200 full-power flashes. The device was also expected to feature HSS and support for smartphone shutter speeds as fast as 1/10,000s.

Though the Kickstarter campaign exceeded the $ 40,000 funding goal, the LIT team explains in the update post, ‘Based on the current funding rate, we might be able to push the product development and production through, but it would take considerably more funds to make it in a way that would meet our high standards.’

The LIT xenon flash Kickstarter project was canceled at just over $ 65,000 in pledged funding from 367 backers. The LIT team said in its post:

We don’t compromise and that’s why we’ve decided to cancel our campaign and maybe revisit Kickstarter at some later time with a new campaign. It feels so wrong doing the right thing.

Saying goodbye is the hardest solution to any problem. But sometimes it’s the only choice we have. It’s not forever, is not the end. It simply means we’ll miss you until we meet again.

We still believe that the future of image making is in your pocket. It is in our nature to work hard. To listen. To think. To question everything. To fail, stand up and change.

LIT will not collect the Kickstarter funds.

Kickstarter campaign presents Bokeh, a platform for privately sharing images

A Kickstarter campaign seeks funding for Bokeh, a new photo sharing platform that enables users to privately share images with friends and family. Bokeh is presented as an alternative to traditional social media services, offering users a focus on privacy and a lack of ‘creepy ads,’ according to Bokeh creator Tim Smith.

Bokeh is an ad-free image sharing service where accounts are set to private by default (the option exists to make them public), accounts are only searchable by username, and followers are hidden from public view. The platform includes features to help keep content private and users safe, such as an automatic prompt to block a user after their follow requests have been declined three times.

The Boken interface resembles Twitter profiles, at least based on the Kickstarter previews. Rather than selling user data and showing advertisements to fund the platform, Bokeh will charge users a fee to use the service. Individual accounts will cost $ 3/month with the option to pay $ 30 per year. Family accounts (up to five users) will be offered for $ 5/month or $ 50 per year.

Smith explains in his campaign:

I believe that your data shouldn’t be mined to sell you targeted ads, that your timeline should be chronological and not based on some algorithm, that tech CEOs shouldn’t allow hate groups to flourish on their platforms, and that we need more social networks that are privacy-focused and ethically sustained.

The Kickstarter funds would be earmarked to develop the service. As with any crowdfunding campaign, there are risks involved and a final product may never reach the market.

Sony claims top spot in full-frame interchangeable lens camera market, launches ‘Be Alpha’ campaign

In a press release issued this morning, Sony announced it has sold more full-frame cameras than any other brand in the US over the past six months, measured both by units sold and by value.

Perhaps more impressively, the company is also celebrating occupying the top position in the overall mirrorless market, a spot it has owned for the past six years thanks to the huge success of the a6000, as well as sales of the a7 series.

That’s all good news for Sony, yes, but it’s probably no coincidence that Sony was the last brand to release a mass-market full frame camera. It’s been a year since Canon’s last entry in the category, and a similar amount of time since Nikon announced the D850. And either way, we don’t recommend getting too invested in brand market share, but that’s just us.

Sony’s also taking the opportunity to launch a brand new ‘Be Alpha’ campaign, which will comprise a number of in-person events in major cities, starting on August 19th in New York City to celebrate World Photography Day. The initiative also includes an ‘Alpha Female’ program, which will include grants, mentorship and events to address “the imaging industry’s well-documented diversity challenges.”


Sony Celebrates No.1 Overall Position in U.S. Full-frame Cameras with Launch of Historic “Be Alpha” Campaign

Kamlan 28mm F1.4 APS-C lens unveiled with upcoming Kickstarter campaign

Chinese company Machang Optics is preparing to launch its new Kamlan 28mm F1.4 MFT lens on Kickstarter, where the company currently has its project listed in draft. The latest Kamlan lens is billed as an inexpensive alternative to pricier lenses while offering the same “premium optical quality” paired with a versatile focal length, super-low chromatic aberration, and a full metallic body.

The Kamlan 28mm F1.4 APS-C lens features 7 groups in 8 elements, 11 circular blades, 0.25m minimum focusing distance, 0.15x max magnification, manual focus, 52mm filter thread, and a 348g / 12oz weight. Machang Optics says the manual aperture ring is de-clicked for smooth changes during video recording.

Despite its budget-tier cost, Machang claims its new Kamlan lens provides a “neutral, accurate color rendition” and excellent center sharpness. The company plans to offer its latest model in Canon EOS M, Micro Four Thirds, Sony E, and Fuji XF mounts.

Once live, Kickstarter backers will able to pledge $ 149 USD to the campaign for a single Kamlan 28mm F1.4 lens. Shipping to backers is expected to start in August, and the lens has an anticipated $ 199 USD retail price.

In addition to its new 28mm offering, Machang has revealed a product timeline for future lenses it plans to launch: 21mm F1.8 APS-C, 50mm F1.1 Mark2, 32mm F1.3 APS-C, and 15mm F1.8 APS-C. The company indicates it will launch these new lenses later this year.

Viral KFC ad campaign turns fried chicken into flames with Photoshop

New York City-based advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather’s latest ad campaign for KFC Hong Kong is on fire… so to speak. Tasked with advertising the release of KFC’s Hot & Spicy chicken, the agency created a clever collection of images that morphs the flaky breading and orange tint of crispy chicken into smoke and flames.

The clever Photoshop jobs include compositions of the spicy chicken with space shuttles, power rangers (we think?) and a rocket-toting drag racing car, but the concept has taken on a life of its own as all good memes do. A few Twitter users around the world have started Photoshopping their own versions of fried-chicken-as-fire.

The series of advertisements picked up attention from the Post-Production Ads Reference Awards for the clever campaign—a well -eserved accolade. Below are a list of contributors to the campaign, as seen on the Ogilvy and Mather agency’s Behance collection.

Meyer Optik launches Kickstarter campaign to fund third Trioplan lens – the 35+

German lens manufacturer Meyer Optik Gorlitz intends to produce the ‘last chapter’ of its ‘Trioplan Trilogy’ if it gets enough funding from its latest Kickstarter campaign to build the Trioplan 35+. The new lens will sit alongside the company’s 100mm F2.8 and 50mm F2.9 Trioplan ‘Soap Bubble’ lenses and will have a maximum aperture of F2.8.

As with the 100mm and 50mm models, the 35mm lens will be based on a historic optical design but will use modern coated glass from Schott and Ohara. This time though, the construction will shift away from the traditional three-elements-in-three-groups of the standard Cooke triplet and will have an additional pair of elements at the front to adapt the design for full frame sensors. The original Trioplan 1.8in lens this one is based on was designed for 8mm film and was telephoto for the format, according to the company, so some changes had to be made to alter it to be a moderate wide for 35mm-style sensors. The extra two elements account for the + in the 35+ name.

The new lens will focus to 0.3m and its 12-bladed iris will provide a minimum aperture of F22. Meyer says it intends to make the lens in a range of mounts:

  • Nikon F
  • Sony E
  • FujiX
  • Micro Four Thirds
  • M42
  • Pentax-K
  • Leica M (rangefinder not supported/focusing via live view)

The ‘soap bubble’ name comes from a characteristic of the design that renders out-of-focus highlights in dramatic style when the lens is used wide open.

But Meyer-Optik engineers designed the new lens according to the historic Cook Triplet design but added two elements to boost the lens.
