Researchers create 100 billion FPS 3D camera with lens that mimics human eyes

A study recently published in Nature Communications details the creation of an ultra-fast 3D camera capable of recording at 100 billion frames per second. The development comes from Lihong Wang and his team at Caltech, where the researchers developed this new camera using the same foundational technology found in Wang’s previous 70 trillion frames per second project.

The newly detailed camera produces what the researchers call ‘single-shot stereo-polarimetric compressed ultrafast photography’ (SP-CUP), a technology that records video at insanely fast speeds in three dimensions. This is made possible, in part, by creating the camera to perceive the world in a way similar to how a human sees — with two eyes, or in the case of the camera, with a halved lens that simulates looking at the world with two eyes.

The result is a camera that records video at insanely fast speeds in three dimensions. The technology is able to capture ‘non-repeatable 5D … evolving phenomena at picosecond temporal resolution,’ according to the study, referring to space, time of arrival, and angle of linear polarization. The study goes on to explain:

Disruptively advancing existing CUP techniques in imaging capability, SP-CUP enables simultaneous and efficient ultrafast recording of polarization in three-dimensional space. Compared with available single-shot ultrafast imaging techniques, SP-CUP has prominent advantages in light throughput, sequence depth, as well as spatiotemporal resolution and scalability in high-dimensional imaging.

Wang and his lab first detailed the 70 trillion frames per second camera back in May, explaining that such speeds were capable of capturing the fluorescent decay from molecules and waves of light as they traveled.

That particular camera technology was called compressed ultrafast spectral photography (CUSP), and it followed Wang’s past work on similar technologies, including the phase-sensitive compressed ultrafast photography (pCUP) device, Caltech had explained in a release.

With the newly detailed SP-CUP technology, the camera captures stereo imagery — 10 billion images in the blink of an eye — using a single lens that has been halved in order to capture two different slightly offset channels of the subject. This is similar to how the human eye works, enabling humans to perceive depth. The image data can be processed to create 3D content, which itself exceeds the capabilities of the human eye by including data on the polarization of light.

The sum total of this new photography technology opens the door for various scientific applications, including research in the field of physics. In particular, Wang sees the potential use of this camera in exploring the mystery of sonoluminescence, a phenomenon in which sound waves produce small bubbles in liquids that, when they collapse, produce tiny bursts of light.

Wang explained:

Some people consider this one of the greatest mysteries in physics. When a bubble collapses, its interior reaches such a high temperature that it generates light. The process that makes this happen is very mysterious because it all happens so fast, and we’re wondering if our camera can help us figure it out.

Instagram allegedly raked in $20 billion in ad revenue last year

YouTube, the most popular video platform on the Internet, didn’t manage to make as much revenue in 2019 as image-based social network Instagram, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Sources claim that Instagram made $ 20 billion in ad revenue last year compared to YouTube’s $ 15.1 billion in ad revenue during the same time period.

The $ 20 billion figure, assuming it is accurate, is almost unfathomable compared to the $ 715 million Facebook paid for Instagram when it acquired it in 2012. Facebook does not officially disclose Instagram’s ad revenue separately from its other products; the company hasn’t commented on the report. As of 2018, Facebook said that it had more than 1 billion users on Instagram.

At $ 20 billion, Instagram would have represented more than a quarter of Facebook’s 2019 revenue, according to Bloomberg. Facebook has made a number of changes to Instagram since acquiring the service, the most recent being its decision to hide public ‘likes’ on the platform. Sources claimed late last year that Facebook decided to hide ‘likes’ so that users will post more often, boosting ad revenue as a result.

Adobe announces record Q4 with annual revenue of $11 billion in 2019

Adobe has announced its fiscal fourth quarter and fiscal 2019 financial results, revealing that they set new quarterly and annual revenue records for the company.

During its fourth quarter, which ended on November 29, Adobe saw quarterly revenue of $ 2.99 billion, a 21% year-over-year increase. With that quarter finalized, Adobe has revealed record annual revenue totaling $ 11.17 billion, a 24% year-over-year increase over its fiscal year 2018.

Adobe President and CEO Shantanu Narayen called the performance ‘phenomenal,’ citing both loyal customers and product innovation as among the reasons for its success.

The company reports growth across multiple business segments, including a 22% year-over-year Digital Media segment quarterly revenue increase to $ 2.08 billion. Adobe’s Creative and Document Cloud segments also grew during Q4 with revenues of $ 1.74 billion and $ 339 million, respectively.

Adobe expects its performance to continue trending upward through its first fiscal quarter of the new year. In Q1 2020, the company is aiming for around $ 3.04 billion in quarterly revenue with continued growth in its Digital Media and Digital Experience segments.

Looking outward at the full fiscal year 2020, Adobe is targeting annual revenue of around $ 13.15 billion with significant growth in its Digital Media and Digital Experience segments, as well as growth in its Digital Experience subscription revenue and bookings.

Copytrack report claims 2.5 billion online images were stolen per day in 2018

Image rights enforcement company Copytrack has released its new Global Infringement Report 2019 study detailing the current state of unauthorized image use around the world. According to the company, it performed a statistical analysis of more than 12,000 Copytrack user profiles as part of its new report, which details the number of ‘potential copyright violations’ the company dealt with from December 2017 to December 2018.

Based on its analysis, Copytrack estimates more than 2.5 billion images are stolen every day with potential daily damages estimated at up €532.5 billion / $ 598 billion. Due to the vast number of images used daily, the company found that most photographers and agencies were unaware of many instances of image infringement.

The study found that the majority of copyright infringement cases originated from North America at 33.90%, with Europe coming in second at 31.40% and Asia in third with 29.38%. The company isn’t able to answer why Asia had lower rates of infringement than NA and EU regions but speculated it may be due, in part, to the percentage of regular Internet users in each continent.

Looking at infringement numbers by country, Copytrack found the US had the highest percentage at 22.96%, followed by Panama at 6.76%, China at 6.57% and Germany at 6.32%. The percentage drop quickly from there, coming in at 3.75% for the UK all the way down to 1.25% for Switzerland, 1.16% for the Netherlands and 1.05% for Vietnam.

Of the infringing use, Copytrack found Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution images were the most commonly used. Most unauthorized use involved images with 3:2, 2:3, and 1:1 format ratios, as well as 640 x 400 and 800 x 800 resolutions. Copytrack concludes its report, stating, ‘This problem will most likely continue at a similar rate until major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and the like figure out a way to reliably identify the authors of images posted online.’

Instagram reaches 1 billion active users

With its stand-alone IGTV video app Instagram had a big product announcement this week, but at the launch event in San Francisco the company had another milestone to talk about: after surpassing 800 million active users last September, Instagram has now reached the 1 billion mark.

After Messenger (1.3 billion), Whatsapp (1.5 billion) and Facebook itself (2.2 billion), this makes the mobile image sharing platform the fourth Facebook-owned social media app to reach this lofty number. When Instagram was taken over by Facebook in 2012, it had approximately 40 million users. The app’s massive growth makes the 1 billion dollar price tag back then look like a very sound investment now.

It also shows that the recent privacy controversies around Facebook after the misuse of data belonging to 50 million of its users don’t appear to have a lasting impact on the company’s apps’ and services’ user numbers.

Adobe posts record revenue yet again, earning $2.08 billion in Q1 of 2018

It’s starting to feel old hat by now: another quarter, another record-breaking earnings report coming out of Adobe. No matter how much people—present company certainly not excluded—gripe about Adobe’s move to the Creative Cloud subscription model, the software company is absolutely raking in the dough as a result.

The last record-breaking revenue report we shared out of Adobe came in Q3 of 2017, when Adobe announced that it had earned $ 1.84 billion that quarter. Now, in Q1 of 2018, the company is staring at that figure in the rearview mirror.

This quarter, Adobe is posting record quarterly revenue of $ 2.08 billion, $ 1.23 billion of which came straight from Creative Cloud in the Digital Media Segment. That $ 2.08B figure represents a jump of 24 percent year-over-year, and contributes to the 43 percent growth in YoY operating income and 64 percent growth in YoY net income that Adobe also revealed.

Creative ARR Exceeds $ 5 Billion in Q1 FY2018

Financial Highlights

  • Adobe achieved record quarterly revenue of $ 2.08 billion in its first quarter of fiscal year 2018, which represents 24 percent year-over-year revenue growth.
  • Diluted earnings per share was $ 1.17 on a GAAP-basis, and $ 1.55 on a non-GAAP basis.
  • Digital Media segment revenue was $ 1.46 billion, with Creative revenue growing to $ 1.23 billion and Document Cloud achieving revenue of $ 231 million.
  • Digital Media Annualized Recurring Revenue (“ARR”) grew to $ 5.72 billion exiting the quarter, a quarter-over-quarter increase of $ 336 million. Creative ARR grew to $ 5.07 billion, and Document Cloud ARR grew to $ 647 million.

Adobe announces record-breaking $1.84 billion in revenue for Q3

Adobe has once again posted record quarterly revenue, this time for the fiscal quarter that ended on September 1, 2017. The software company experienced a 26% year-on-year revenue growth with $ 1.84 billion in its third fiscal quarter this year. Of that, $ 1.27 billion came from the company’s Digital Media segment, including Creative Cloud. On a GAAP basis, Adobe saw its year-on-year net income grow 55% and its operating income grow 48%.

We’ll give you a moment to take that in… 55% net income growth, and a fiscal quarter of $ 1.84 billion. The jump to a subscription model is treating the company VERY well.

This marks yet another high point for Adobe, which previously posted record revenue during its second fiscal quarter ending in June 2017. During its Q2, Adobe made then record-setting $ 1.77 billion with its Digital Media segment having driven that revenue.

Looking forward, Adobe anticipates fourth fiscal quarterly revenue of $ 1.95 billion, which would once again keep it in line with analysts’ expectations and set yet another record. Financial highlights from Adobe for Q3 are listed below:

Global digital photography market value to grow to $110.79 billion by 2021

The digital photography market, including cameras, software and processing equipment, is expected to grow to $ 110.79 billion by the year 2021, according to a new report from Zion Market Research. The research firm valued the digital photography market at $ 77.66B USD in 2015, and anticipates a 6.1-percent growth rate between 2016 and 2021. Asia Pacific is expected to represent the greatest regional market growth during this time frame.

According to the report, Asia Pacific is estimated to hold a ‘significant’ share of the digital photography market due to growing economies, with North America coming in second. The research firm anticipates an increased demand for replacement devices among consumers in Europe and North America, while Asia Pacific countries have seen digital photography market growth due to, among other things, ‘steady income’ in select countries. Also contributing to expected market growth in coming years is ‘strong product penetration’ throughout Latin America.

Social networks including Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr are helping drive digital photography market growth, as well as software including Photoshop and other photo editors. ‘Digital photography allows consumers to take professional quality photos themselves,’ the study notes as one driving force, as well as digital photography’s suitability for a variety of industries beyond the scope of traditional photography, including surveillance, science, machine vision, and more.

Yahoo discloses new data breach affecting 1 billion user accounts

Yahoo has disclosed a new data breach affecting more than 1 billion user accounts. According to the company, this data breach – which is different than and unrelated to the one disclosed this past September – involved an unknown third party stealing user account data in August 2013. The stolen data includes names, email addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, MD5 hashed passwords and both encrypted and unencrypted security Q&As.

Yahoo detailed the news yesterday evening in a Tumblr post. According to that statement, Yahoo was made aware of a possible data breach via an alert from law enforcement. A company investigation into the matter revealed the August 2013 data theft, though the company states it hasn’t figured out how the intrusion took place.

Affected Yahoo users are being notified of the data theft. The company has invalidated unencrypted security questions and answers, and is requiring users to reset their account passwords. The company further advises its users to monitor their accounts for suspicious activity and messages, and to avoid providing personal info or clicking links/downloads within suspicious emails. This security breach, of course, potentially affects users across all Yahoo properties that require a Yahoo account for access, including Flickr.
