Barack Obama photo and quote becomes most popular tweet of all time

Former president Barack Obama’s recent photo response to the violent events in Charlottesville, VA has officially become the most popular tweet of all time. The 44th President of these United States tweeted the official White House photograph above—captured by the great Pete Souza—alongside part of a quote by the late Nelson Mandela:

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

As of this writing, the tweet has received over 53,000 replies, 1.3 million retweets and nearly 3.4 million likes.

The new record just goes to show: pair a powerful message with a powerful photograph, and you’ve got a lot more power than the proverbial “1,000 words” that photo is supposedly worth.

KitSplit acquires CameraLends, becomes largest peer-to-peer camera rental platform

Peer-to-peer camera equipment rental platform KitSplit has acquired its rival CameraLends to form the world’s largest peer-to-peer gear rental community. The combined entity will be managed under the KitSplit brand from headquarters in New York and CameraLends founder Adam Derewecki will join KitSplit as an advisor. 

“There are more content creators today than ever before and they all need access to top quality, affordable gear. Since launching a little over a year ago, KitSplit has made huge improvements in gear rentals, making creative work and connecting with creators even easier and more affordable. The CameraLends acquisition will further our goals of democratizing access to great gear and empowering creators,” says KitSplit cofounder and CEO Lisbeth Kaufman.

CameraLends user accounts including gear information have already been integrated into the Kitsplit web platform to smooth the transition for existing CameraLends users. In addition to individuals, KitSplit also works with rental houses and production companies to expand its gear pool. More information is available on the KitSplit website.

GoPro mount becomes standard accessory for next year’s Toyota Tacoma, as GoPro plans user-generated-content licensing deals

Toyota has revealed that the 2016 version of its adventure truck will come pre-fitted with a windshield mount for a GoPro camera. Those interested in filming their muddy, dusty and rocky scrambles will be able to fit a camera to point forwards or backwards to capture either the ‘flight’ or passengers reactions. Read more

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM becomes a reality

The much-rumored replacement for Canon’s aging EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L has officially arrived. Announced in 1998, the original trombone-style lens is replaced by a traditional rotating zoom design and boasts a number of optical enhancements. It’s scheduled for December availability at a price of $ 2199. Read more

Carl Zeiss drops ‘Carl’, becomes ‘ZEISS’

We’ve all been there – your friend Carl is over by the fridge, getting some ice, and there you are with an expensive new Carl Zeiss lens, and you’re describing it to someone, and Carl keeps saying ‘What? What did you say? Do you want ice?’ It’s confusing. No wonder then that German lens manufacturer Carl Zeiss has decided to officially drop the ‘Carl’ and will henceforth be known simply as ZEISS. According to the manufacturer’s blog, the decision was taken to ‘create consistency’ across its brand communications. Click through for more details (and no more terrible Carl puns, we promise).

Abandoned Church Becomes Brilliant Urban Art Installation

Abandoned Church Art 1

A languishing, yellowed church in Washington D.C. underwent a dramatic transformation in every shade of the rainbow, with street artist HENSE using it like a massive urban canvas. The church is in a downtrodden area with the potential to become the city’s next arts district, and this project represents the hope for a more colorful future.

Dramatic and abstract, the project turns the former Friendship Baptist Church at 700 Delaware Avenue into an oversized mural just across the street from an abandoned lot set to become the site of a new art museum. Atlanta-based Alex ‘HENSE’ Brewer was commissioned to cover the church with paint.

The project not only brightens the neighborhood and gives it a sense of a new identity, it also draws attention to a structure that has been abandoned and overlooked for many years. Like many other abandoned building art projects, 700 Delaware Ave forces people to acknowledge urban blight in the hopes of encouraging action.

“Taking an existing building like the church and painting the entire thing re-contextualizes it and makes it a sculptural object,” HENSE told Design Boom. “We really wanted to turn the church into a three-dimensional piece of artwork. With projects like this one, we really try to use the existing architecture as inspiration for the direction of the painting.”

Stripped to Skeleton, Old Building Becomes Bright Art Lab

An unused building at the Monterrey Institute of Technology’s León Campus in Mexico was stripped to its frame and re-imagined as a dynamic ‘creative laboratory’ with transparent walls and an undulating wooden facade. Shine Architecture and TA Arquitectura removed exterior walls, interior partitions, windows and staircases to reconstruct all but the building’s most basic footprint.

The intent of the architects was to create a ‘blank page’ for the students, a 24/7 studio for art, design, model-making and photography. All of the natural daylight that floods the building during the day is ideal for these activities; of course, darkened interior spaces are available for photo processing and similar activities.

The ‘shield’ of jagged timber and steel offers shade and privacy on one side of the building, as well as space for a ramp leading to the second floor. The glass walls let both light and air into the structure.

“Morphologically its inner industrial look like tectonic embracing 3 main parts; a large glazed box in conjunction with a smaller solid volume and external circulation appendix,” say the architects. “In terms of general aesthetic, the purpose was to look as part of a context, respecting existing materials, but be different and recognizable as an experimental-design building.”

Shanghai Bomb Shelter Becomes Bustling Underground Night Club

With a population of nearly 13.5 million packed into just 2,448 square miles and a large network of disused bomb shelters, it’s no surprise that some Shanghai businesses are going underground. The Shelter is a new nightclub that makes use of one of the roughly 2,000 bomb shelters that can be found beneath the Xuhui district alone, leaving many of the original elements intact.

To get to the club, you’ll have to make your way down a long, narrow stairway and through a dark, cave-like cement tunnel that twists and winds beneath street level. For The Shelter, the rawness and darkness of the setting is part of the appeal.

There are hundreds of thousands of bomb shelters all over China, built in the ’60s and ’70s to prepare for possible air raids from the Soviet Union. “Some projects remain as secrets,” said Tong Songyan, an official at the Xuhui district government, in an interview with Reuters.

Other businesses that have made their home in these underground passages range from the appropriate to the incongruous including a wine shop, a men’s gay bar and a men’s underwear store. The location currently inhabited by The Shelter was formerly a vegetable market, ice storage facility, massage parlor and public bath house.
