Audio Hop: Best NYC Art Gallery Tour You Have Ever Heard

20 Aug

nyc gallery audio tour

A new way to experience galleries, their artwork and the city they inhabit, even calling it a tour sells short this extremely impressive multimedia experience. Complete with props and layered audio recordings, all interspersed with civic trivia and high-speed humor, the whole Audio Hop production feels like an well-executed piece of dynamic performance art, in which you can play any number of parts. Launching next month, this hop is well worth a stop, a look and a listen.

David Behringer, the curator of this experience, is exuberant, knowledgeable and very dedicated, visiting over 250 galleries in Chelsea each month to find the five most worthy ones to show any given group (and rotating with each tour). From start to finish, his personality and enthusiasm make it work. For an simple sample, check out his video recap below showing ten of his favorite exhibits from 2013 – then click here to buy tickets for the program starting next month.

Unlike a traditional audio walking tour, this one features both live and prerecorded sound, all delivered wirelessly to an inconspicuous device, letting its guests meander through the galleries but also break away from the group. The clips include carefully curated and edited interviews with artists and other soundbites related to a given work or its context. “A hidden radio transmitter allows you to hear your guide from any distance (in total secret) AND listen to insightful audio clips of the artists themselves while you’re in the gallery.”

Effectively, you and your fellow half-dozen tour-takers feel both empowered to enter galleries that might seem open or feel welcoming you but also liberated from the the feeling of being tied to a traditional clustered bunch of gawking tourists. You can fall behind and linger, or stride ahead to the next stop, all while absorbing auditory input in the background.

30 out of 30 reviewers on TripAdvisor rated David’s private tours as ‘Excellent’, effectively a unanimous a 5-star recommendation. WebUrbanist’s own Executive Editor had the opportunity to a sneak peak at his new and more-public offering this summer and was beyond impressed – what were individual tours are morphing into something suddenly more accessible.

If it was not already clear: we would strongly recommend taking a trip with David to anyone who wants to get a glimpse of the art world … or simply wishes to take a artfully curated walk through New York City, learning about the neighborhood, its architecture and artwork alike. Even if you are not in the area, you can still check out the blog to learn about fantastic new works.

Sound in Sand: Complex Visualizations of Audio Frequencies

07 Jun

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

Sound in Sand 1
Grains of sand arrange themselves into complex geometric patterns according to audio frequencies in these fascinating resonance experiments by Youtube user Brusspup. The sand is sprinkled onto a black metal plate attached to a tone generator, which emits a series of increasing frequencies. The higher the frequencies, the more intricate the designs become.

Sound in Sand 2

This experiment is based on the Chiadni plate, invented by German physicist Ernst Chiadni in the 18th century. Chiadni used a violin bow along the edge of a glass plate covered with sand to create visualizations of sound. The plate is divided into regions vibrating in opposite directions, bounded by lines of zero vibration called nodal lines.

Sound in Sand 3

The plate was bowed until it reached resonance, at which point the vibration causes the sand to concentrate along the nodal lines where the surface is still. This technique is still used in the design and construction of acoustic instruments like violins and guitars.

Sound in Sand 4

Brusspup often experiments with the intersection of science and art. Previous projects have included running water through sound waves to produce incredible zig-zagging shapes, and a sound-based camera trick that makes water appear to travel backwards.

Canon EOS 60D HD Video + Zoom H4n Audio Test

13 Jan

www.emmettlollis.com – I just got my Canon EOS 60D today. I decided to do a recording test using the 60D for video and the Zoom H4n for audio. I’m very pleased with this combination. The audio and HD video are both fantastic when combined. Yes the focus is a little blurry but I’m still learning the features. I also made some test clips at a concert tonight and that came out great as well. Be sure to visit my site and don’t forget to view this video in HD!

www.arthurwoo.com Had a chance to watch and record the band “Makru” — great music! I’ve had my Zoom h4n for a couple of weeks and it was a good test to see how the audio was coming out of the main mixing board. The quality I got on the recording was pretty good! The low end isn’t a beefy as I’d normally like. With that I would have had to use the mics on the Zoom recorder to get some of the ambient sounds, but I wasn’t able to do so due to the set up of the mixer and the outputs they had available. It was recorded to the “external” mic 1 plug on the back of the Zoom. Kit used: Canon 60D Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 LCDVF 3:2 Zoom H4N Plugged into the main output of the mixing board

Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash and Zeikos D5000 Battery Grip Overview on a Nikon D5000 After a few days, the battery grip was becoming to much of a burden for me to carry around. It added a small but very noticeable amount of weight to my already heavy lens, which I did not need. I returned it, and glad I did. I’ll be using that money towards a 35mm 1.8 lens now. As for the SB-400, I LOVE IT! I decided not to get the SB-600 because I was happy with SB-400 and its compact size, and while the SB-600 has more features, the portability of the SB-400 is amazing. I’m an on-the-go, hang-out-with-family-and-friends, hobbyist photographer. I used to carry a big bag with three lens which was hassle. Now all I carry is my D5000, 18-270mm all-around lens, SB-400, and spare battery. All I’ll ever need, and very happy this way.

Flight 1549 Alternate Audio, Multi-Perspective Composite Animation

29 Jan

project homepage: www.exosphere3d.com This video presents the alternate audio tracks and does so by splitting to L and R channels. The audio presented is: LaGuardia ATCT Cab Coordinator, LaGuardia ATCT South Terminal Control, New York TRACON South Control, and Teterboro ATCT Local Control position Radar data is displayed in the upper right quadrant with aircraft identification and altitude (100’s of feet). The audio transcripts of the aforementioned audio tracks are displayed on screen for nearly all communications from the mentioned audtio recordings. Continuity is maintained with the audio transcript display, however the audible tracks are faded in and out and selected based on perceived importance to the accident timeline. This combination of information is not a likely candidate for final presentation because of information overload. However, it does illustrate the usefulness and capabilities of a fully integrated reconstruction technique.
