Atomos is working on a Ninja V update to bring 12-bit 4K/30p ProRes RAW to Nikon Z6 II, Z7 II cameras

The cameras haven’t even his the shelves of retailers yet and already Atomos has announced its Ninja V monitor/recorder will support ProRes RAW recording over HDMI on Nikon’s forthcoming Z6 II and Z7 II camera systems.

While both the Z6 II and Z7 II have respectable internal recording capabilities in their own right — 4K/60p for the Z7 II out of the box and with the Z6 II via a future firmware update — the addition of ProRes RAW recording further adds to the creative capabilities of Nikon’s latest mirrorless cameras.

Atomos says both the Z6 II and Z7 II will be able to output up to 4K/30p 12-bit ProRes RAW video over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V recorder when it receives an AtomOS firmware update later this year. Atomos also notes that Nikon’s N-Log profile is fully supported in its AtomHDR monitoring pipeline ‘with the ability to add built in 709 preview, custom 3D LUTs and LOG to HDR conversion for both monitoring and output.’

Atomos launches Connect, a $79 capture card

Atomos has launched a HDMI-to-USB video capture card that allows any HDMI camera or recorder to be used to live stream or record to a PC or Mac. Connect is a tiny device that plugs directly into a USB port and accepts HDMI input to provide a video feed of up to 1080p at 60fps in up to 12-bit color.

The device can accept 4K at 30p, and needs no additional drivers, software or power supply to work. And best of all, it costs $ 79. Unlike most capture cards, the Connect doesn’t use a USB out cable, so the full weight of the HDMI cable will be borne by the USB port on your computer, making this perhaps a solution when a short cable is in use or when the cable can be supported.

Atomos is promoting Connect to use with its range of video recorders, but it can also work directly with any camera, or device, that can output via HDMI. The company points out though that when used with the Shogun7 users can switch between up to four simultaneously streaming cameras using the Shogun’s multiple-camera recording capabilities.

Atomos, Olympus working to bring ProRes RAW to E-M1X, E-M1 Mark III by end of year

Atomos and Olympus have teamed up to announce the duo is co-developing firmware updates that will enable ProRes RAW footage to be captured on the OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras when paired with the Atomos Ninja V over HDMI.

This partnership is the latest in many that have seen numerous cameras gain ProRes RAW output over HDMI when recording to an Atomos Ninja V recorder, including the Sigma fp, Fujifilm GFX100 and many others. The announcement doesn’t lay out the video specifications that will be able to be captured, nor a date we can expect the firmware updates to go live, but the press release says we can expect them before the end of 2020.

We’ll be sure to share an update article when the firmware updates go live later this year.

Atomos announces ProRes RAW support for Olympus OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras

Together these powerful Olympus cameras and the Atomos Ninja V will record Apple ProRes RAW directly from the camera’s sensor.

Atomos Ninja V adds ProRes RAW capture to GFX 100, Sigma fp over HDMI

Atomos has released the latest firmware update for its popular Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables ProRes RAW capture over HDMI with the Fujifilm GFX 100 and Sigma fp camera systems.

Fujifilm GFX 100

On a GFX 100 running firmware version 2.01 or later, the Ninja V can now record 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW video at up to 30p over HDMI. This marks the first time users can capture Raw footage on the large format camera.

If you don’t need the Raw video, the Atomos firmware update also enables 10-bit 422 ProRes and DNx 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) capture up to 30p or 4K DCI (4096?×?2160) at up to 24p. Multiple monitoring modes have also been added for viewing and playing back Raw footage.

Sigma fp

Moving onto the Sigma fp, the Ninja V can now record 12-bit ProRes RAW at 4K DCI up to 24p or 4K UHD up to 30p over HDMI using the full width of the sensor. You can even capture 120p (119.88p) 12-bit ProRes Raw if you knock the resolution down to 1080.

10-bit ProRes 422 and DNx can also be recorded at 30p and 120p (119.88p) at 4K UHD and 1080 resolutions, respectively, if you don’t need Raw footage. Like the GFX 100, multiple monitoring modes have also been included for viewing and playing back Raw footage.

Known limitations

SIGMA fp

• In some instances when using LUTs banding artifacts may be observed in some areas of the display on the Ninja V for

4KUHD video modes. (This behaviour is only limited to the display of the Ninja V and not the recordings).

• On occasion if the camera is. powered down whilst connect to the Ninja V and set to RAW mode, the Ninja V may enter a locked state.

– Switch between Record and Play back mode, Unplugging and re-plugging the HDMI, or Power cycling Switching will all resolve this issue.

• ISO metadata reported in Final Cut Pro X may occasionally be incorrect if using 1/3 EV ISO adjustments on the camera. – Incorrect for camera ISO setting 1000, 8000, 16000.

• Update in future firmware release for camera.
– White balance adjustment is not available in Final Cut Pro X.

FujiFilm GFX100

• Interaction with the EVF eye sensor may cause freeze frame or black frames in the recording. – Not using the EVF or tilting the LCD screen can resolve the issue.
– Removal of the EVF from the camera is advised to avoid issue.

• White balance metadata is not reported in Final Cut Pro X.
– Update in future firmware release for camera and Ninja.
– White balance adjustment is not available in Final Cut Pro X.

General

• RAW to HDR HDMI output – PQ / HDR10 output conversion may appear slightly incorrect.

Atomos releases full Ninja V firmware update for recording 5.9K 12-bit ProRes Raw with Panasonic S1H

Atomos has announced the full firmware update for its Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables 5.9K ProRes Raw video capture from a Panasonic S1H.

It’s been just one week since the pre-release beta firmware was released alongside Panasonic’s S1H 2.1 firmware update, but the full version is up and ready to go. The full firmware update enables Ninja V units to record 12-bit ProRes Raw video over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. Also new is a 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode that makes it easier to record footage shot on anamorphic lenses.

To accompany the new recording options, Panasonic has released a new LUT that can be downloaded for free on its website. The Atomos Ninja V firmware update (AtomOS 10.52) can be downloaded from the Ninja V product page, under the ‘Support’ tab.

Last week Atomos launched a Pre-Release Beta for Ninja V users to try out on their Panasonic LUMIX S1H. Today Atomos announces the full firmware update for the Ninja V.

From today Ninja V & Panasonic LUMIX S1H users will be able to record:

Simply stunning 12-bit RAW

The Ninja V captures the unprocessed highly detailed 12-bit RAW signal files directly from the full frame sensor of the S1H over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in Full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. These unprocessed files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and every detail from the S1H. The resulting ProRes RAW files allow for greater creativity in post-production with perfect skin tones and easily matched colors, ideal for both HDR and SDR (Rec.709) workflows.

Anamorphic RAW

More and more cinematographers are now choosing to shoot with anamorphic lenses and the Ninja V and S1H combination caters to them with the new 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode. An even bigger world of cinematic opportunities opens up as the Ninja V and S1H can now be used as an A-camera or smaller B-camera on an anamorphic RAW production.

Improved color pipeline

LUMIX S1H ProRes RAW files recorded to the Ninja V can now benefit from an improved color pipeline in Apple Final Cut Pro X. Panasonic have published a new LUT based workflow that allows the enhanced potential of ProRes RAW files captured from the LUMIX S1H to be realised in the NLE software.

Ninja V advantage

The Ninja V allows users to accurately monitor the RAW signal on its daylight-viewable 5” 1000nit brightness HDR screen. Setup is simple when the camera is attached with perfectly tuned color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the RAW image accurately in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification and focus peaking, allowing them to perfect their RAW video. Sony a7S III to get 4K/60p ProRes Raw capture over HDMI with Atomos’ Ninja V monitor/recorder

To coincide with the announcement of Sony’s a7S III, Atomos has announced it will release a firmware update for its Ninja V recorder/monitor that will enable it to record 4K/60p ProRes Raw video over HDMI.

The 16-bit linear Raw video output of the a7S III is sent via HDMI to the Ninja V recorder, which then compresses and records the video as 12-bit ProRes Raw at up to 4K/60p. The Ninja V will also be able to record the a7S III’s 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI video output as 10-bit 4:2:2 Log or Rec.709 video at up to 4K/60p in ProRes or DNx codecs.

Atomos to record 4Kp60 ProRes RAW over HDMI from Sony’s Alpha 7S III

Melbourne, Australia – July 28, 2020 – Atomos are today announcing RAW recording at up to 4Kp60 via HDMI from Sony’s new Alpha 7S III (ILCE-7SM3) full-frame mirrorless camera to the Ninja V HDR monitor-recorder.

The Alpha 7S III has a state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor and the Ninja V can record its full dynamic range in Apple ProRes RAW for maximum detail and latitude in post-production. The RAW files are optimal for HDR finishing, or for greater flexibility in SDR (Rec.709), giving stunning results in either. Images are recorded directly to affordable, reliable AtomX SSDmini or other compatible SSD drives for quick transfer to your editing system.

Unrestricted RAW recording
RAW recording with the Ninja V from the Alpha 7S III is only limited by your imagination. The combination will record ProRes RAW video for as long as you have disk space on your SSD and power for the camera and recorder. The active cooling employed means that internal record time limitations can be bypassed making a perfect setup for performances and long interviews. Optionally, RAW video can also be captured on the Ninja V at the same time as compressed video is recorded internally to memory card on the Alpha 7S III, providing several workflow options and a useful backup

Making low light RAW video a reality
Alpha 7S III low light performance is especially impressive, with the data from the camera’s large photosites making recording RAW in dim conditions a practical option. The Alpha 7S III also has 5-axis optical image stabilisation that is available while shooting RAW video, allowing for amazingly stable and detailed handheld RAW shots.

16-bit Linear RAW perfectly captured as 12-bit Log RAW
The data-rich 16-bit linear RAW output of the Alpha 7S III is compressed and recorded in the Ninja V as 12-bit ProRes RAW at up to 4Kp60. The result is a high quality ProRes RAW file that combines the superb visual quality of the Alpha 7S III with the workflow advantages of RAW and the incredible real-time performance of ProRes. One key benefit, especially in low light, is that the ProRes RAW files allow you to take fine control of how noise reduction and sharpening is applied to images, tuning these precisely for each shot.

A defined standard
Atomos believes ProRes RAW is the new standard for RAW video capture, which is supported by an ever growing number of cameras outputting RAW over HDMI to the Ninja V. The format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows. 10-bit 4kp60 Apple ProRes or Avid DNx for extended recording
For the first time in a mirrorless camera from Sony there is also a 10-bit 422 HDMI video output option available. The Ninja V and other current Atomos monitor-recorders can record this as 10-bit 422 Log or Rec.709 video at up to 4Kp60 into production ready ProRes or DNx codecs. These provide long record times and practical data rates when the additional flexibility of RAW is not required. This is ideal for situations where the camera needs to integrate into an established post workflow, or a fast turnaround is needed.

HDR monitoring perfection
The accurate 5” 1000nit HDR high brightness display of the Ninja V allows users to view the Alpha 7S III RAW signal in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats or view natively in Sony’s S-Log profile and used with LUTs. The monitor offers touchscreen access to tools like waveform, magnification and peaking so users can check focus and make adjustments to get the perfect HDR or SDR shot.

Launch film from filmmaker Philip Bloom
Renowned filmmaker Philip Bloom has shot a short film titled ‘The Paddleboarder’ to test the ProRes RAW capabilities of the Alpha 7S III with the Ninja V. Shot on the river Thames in just one day it clearly demonstrates just how filmic the RAW images look. In his time with the camera he has also shot ProRes RAW in various lighting conditions including near darkness.

He said: “Sony’s Alpha 7S III is incredibly powerful and does pretty much everything I need from a camera. Having the ability to record RAW over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V is the icing on the cake. Not only can I record at full quality 10-bit 4K internally to the camera’s memory cards, I can simultaneously record 12-bit ProRes RAW to an SSD which gives me more flexibility to grade and bypass things like the in-camera sharpening and noise reduction. This is especially invaluable when shooting at very high ISO where working with RAW allows me to adjust the noise in post processing with much more precision.”

Sigma fp gets 4K raw output to Atomos and Blackmagic recorders in firmware 2.0

Sigma has released a major 2.0 firmware update for its fp camera that adds, amongst numerous other new features, the ability to record Apple ProRes Raw over HDMI when paired with an Atomos Ninja V monitor/recorder and Blackmagic Raw over HDMI with a Blackmagic Video Assist 12G.

When paired with an Atomos Ninja V updated with the latest firmware, the fp is able to record Apple ProRes RAW at up to DCI 4Kp24 or UHD 4Kp30 directly from the camera’s full-frame sensor. Additionally, this update will make the fp the first mirrorless camera in the world capable of recording Raw Full HD (1080p) video at 120 fps. Sigma doesn’t specify the exact framerates or resolutions that are possible when capturing Blackmagic Raw on Blackmagic’s Video Assist 12G recorder, but like the Atomos, it will require a firmware update.

Other new and improved features include cinemagraph creation and playblack, CinemaDNG footage playback, still capture during live view and movie shooting, still image capture from recorded footage, support for camera movement control with Zhiyun’s Weebill S gimbal and camera control support while in USB mode. Sigma also says the update adds ‘HDR in movie shooting,’ but it doesn’t divulge any specifications. We have contacted Sigma to request additional information on this front.

Sigma has also updated and improved upon existing functionality, including explicit stating of dual base ISOs (100 and 3200), improved autofocus performance, improved exposure metering accuracy and support for multiple CinemaDNG capture modes. An issue where flickering could appear in dark footage has also been corrected in the firmware update.

Atomos shares info on S1H ProRes Raw update, to offer 16-bit Raw capture with Sony FX9

Atomos has made two announcements that will bring improved video recording capabilities to two recently-released cameras: the Panasonic Lumix S1H and the Sony FX9.

First up, Atomos has shared more information regarding a previous announcement that it was working alongside Panasonic to co-develop a means to capture Raw video for the Lumix S1H. Atomos has now provided both a timeframe (albeit a rough one) and official specifications for the impending firmware update.

Atomos says the S1H firmware update will make it possible to record 5.9K/29.97p Raw and C4K/59.94p video on the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder over HDMI. Currently, the Lumix S1H can record 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/29.97p (16:9 aspect ratio) and 59.94p 4K/C4K, so this update will be a substantial bump in recording capabilities.

In its announcement, Panasonic also revealed that ProRes Raw would be the codec supported for Raw recording. The firmware is scheduled to be launched in early 2020.

Atomos has also announced that it’s Neon 8K MCU (Adorama, B&H) will support 4K 16-bit Raw recording from Sony’s recently-unveiled FX9 camera. Details are scarce, but Atomos’ press release, embedded below, implies the functionality will be available when the FX9 ships later this year in December 2019.

It seems Atomos is adamant on working alongside camera manufacturers to get the most from the sensors inside the manufacturers’ latest cameras. In January 2019, Atomos said it was working with Nikon to bring 4K Raw video capture over HDMI to its Ninja V external recorder.

We’ve since learned this update won’t be free and will require cameras to be sent into Nikon service centers to perform an ‘internal upgrade’ to the camera, but the promise still remains. According to the latest information, the 4K Raw video update is still scheduled to be released before the end of the year.

LUMIX S1H Firmware Development Underway for 5.9K/29.97p and C4K/59.94p RAW Video Data Output to Atomos Ninja V

Newark, NJ (September 13, 2019) – Panasonic is proud to announce the development of firmware for the LUMIX S1H full-frame mirrorless camera which enables the output of 5.9K/29.97p RAW and C4K/59.94p video data to the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder. The firmware is scheduled to be launched in early 2020.

The LUMIX S1H is the world’s first camera to combine professional-level video quality, the high mobility of a mirrorless camera and a Full-Frame sensor. It is currently capable of video recording at 6K/24p*1 (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/29.97p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 59.94p 4K/C4K.*2 *3 The LUMIX S1H will be introduced in late September 2019.

Panasonic has a long history of collaboration with Atomos. This relationship will deliver new RAW video functionality for the S1H. 5.9K up to 29.97p and C4K*3 up to 59.94p in RAW delivered over HDMI is in development. With this firmware Apple ProRes RAW can be recorded on the Atomos Ninja V.

A LUMIX S1H prototype with this firmware will be exhibited along with the Atomos Ninja V in the Panasonic booth (Booth No. C45, Hall 11) at the IBC2019 (International Broadcasting Convention) to be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from September 13-17, 2019.

Atomos and Panasonic to co-develop Raw video for the Panasonic S1H

In a brief press release, Atomos announced that it’s working with Panasonic to bring Raw video recording via HDMI to Panasonic’s new S1H camera. According to the company, Raw recording will be supported using its Ninja V HDR monitor/recorder.

Atomos previously announced a collaboration with Nikon to support ProRes Raw recording from the Nikon Z6, which Nikon indicated will be available later this year. Curiously, today’s announcement from Atomos doesn’t specify what Raw format it intends to support on the S1H. We reached out to the company for clarification but were told it’s unable to provide additional information at this time.

According to Atomos the Raw update will be free to Atomos users, though it’s unknown whether there will be any cost associated with the upgrade on the Panasonic side. No timeframe for availability was provided.

Atomos’ new Neon monitors/recorders will have 8K/60p ProRes RAW module option

Atomos has announced Neon, a new lineup of on-set and in-studio 4K HDR monitors/recorders designed for commercial high-resolution HDR capture. At launch, the four monitors in the lineup will be capable of recording 4K video, but a subsequent 8K master control unit will eventually give each of the monitors the ability to record 8K/60p video.

The Neon lineup consists of four different unit sizes: 17″, 24″, 31″ and 55″ with the following resolutions and pixel densities:

• 17″ — Full HD (2048px x 1080px, 142ppi)
• 24″ — 4K DCI (4096px x 2160px, 193ppi)
• 31″ — 4K DCI (4096px x 2160px, 147ppi)
• 55″ — 4K UHD (3840px x 2160px, 84ppi)

According to Atomos’ press release, each of the units were designed to serve a specific role in the monitoring and recording of footage:

‘[The] 17in is for focus pullers and as an on-set buddy reference monitor for laptops. The 24in and 31in is perfect for the video village, DIT, cinematographer, editor, director and a reference monitor for an iMac or Mac Pro. The 55in is a must have for clients, showrooms and color graders.’

Unlike previous Atomos units, the Neon lineup drops the touchscreen in favor of remote control via Atomos iOS app. The app will be able to control up to 1,000+ units at once via Bluetooth (each of the Neon units will communicate using sub-gigahertz RF with a range of 200m/656ft) and will provide real-time tools like focus peaking, exposure, calibration, zoom, waveform monitor, LUT selection and more from a single device. It will also enable the Neon units to be perfectly synced up with the recorded footage for matching timecode.

With the default 4K master control unit, the monitors support up to DCI 4K input and display the image with 10-bit DCI-P3 color, 1000 cd/m² brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. When recording the units can capture ProRes, ProRes RAW, Avid DNx and Cinema DNG formats up to 4K/60p using 2.5″ HDD or SSD media with Master Caddy II or AtomX SSDmini adapters, neither of which are included.

The Neon units feature HDMI 2.0b in/out connections, two mic/line input, one 3.5mm headphone output and come with Atomos’ SDI Expansion Module that offers 12G-SDI in/out.

The displays are constructed of an aluminum alloy frame with a polycarbonate back plate, while the 17″, 24″ and 31″ Neons will come with their own crush-proof and water-tight travel case. Mounting points on the unit include VESA mounts, feet for placing on the ground or desk and ARRI-standard edge mounting points.

To ensure the units are future-proof, Atomos has also announced an 8K Master Control Unit that will allow for recording and monitoring of 8K/60p video with support for both ProRes and ProRes RAW straight out of camera, a world first by our records. Additional details are scarce, but Atomos says the 8K Master Control Units are ‘due to hit the market in 2019.’

The Neon17 and Neon24 units are expected to be available in August 2019 for $ 3,999 and $ 6,499, respectively. The Neon31 and Neon55 units are set to ship September 2018 for $ 7,999 and $ 16,999, respectively.

It’s safe to say these units aren’t for your run-and-gun shooters or even mid-level commercial work. These are full-fledged units designed for the most high-level operations and the most discerning eyes—and that doesn’t come cheap.
