Sharp 8K Video Camera appears at CES 2020 with some specs and availability details

During last year’s CES event, Sharp introduced a Micro Four Thirds camera prototype simply referred to as the ‘8K Video Camera.’ Details about the camera at the time had largely come from Kinotika, which had the chance to spend some hands-on time with the model. The company was back with more details about this model during CES 2020 and this time they come from a video published by Personal View.

During the video interview below, Sharp’s vice president of New Business Development Cliff Quiroga revealed some details about the company’s 8K camera, which was demonstrated with a working model at the most recent Consumer Electronics Show. The camera will be able to record 8K/30p, 4K/60p and 1080/60p video, it was confirmed.

The latter two recording options will be at 200Mbits/s at 10-bit, according to the interview, which reveals that the camera will feature a full-size HDMI output port, a 14cm (5.5″) fully articulating touch LCD, headphone and audio jacks, as well as a mini XLR port. The camera was demonstrated with an 8K external display.

Sharp is aiming for an H2 2020 release date in Japan and plans to launch the camera in the United States at some point ‘shortly after that.’ The price is still expected to fall below $ 4,000, but additional details are still pending.

New video shows off what appears to be DJI’s rumored ‘Mavic Mini’ drone

We’ve already seen purported images and rumored specs of DJI’s impending compact drone. Now, a video posted to YouTube shows off what appears to be the same device detailed in the previously-reported photographs.

Originally posted to TikTok by a user of a closed Facebook group dedicated to DJI drone equipment and subsequently uploaded to YouTube, the 23-second video shows a drone that appears to be the rumored ‘DJI Mavic Mini.’ On the front of the light grey drone is a white DJI logo. The arms of the drone are collapsed in their stored position and appear to have the protective tape still wrapped around them. The front and bottom obstacle avoidance sensors can also be seen in the video as the drone is rotated around.

Interestingly, the area of the drone where the camera/gimbal would normally be installed appears to be missing. As noted by DroneDJ, it’s unknown whether it’s ‘been removed or has not yet been installed on this particular drone.’ The battery door appears identical to the one shown off in the previous images we’ve seen and show the same placement for the USB connector and Micro USB port.

Between our last post and this one, a leaked spec sheet has also been revealed that appears to contradict the initial report that the impending drone will weigh more than 250g. According to the purported spec sheet, the drone will come in at 245g, putting it under the FAA’s weight limit for registration requirements. DroneDJ has shared a follow-up article detailing why this is even more likely be the case considering DJI’s statements at its May 2019 event titled ‘Elevating Safety: Protecting the Skies in the Drone Era.’

Whatever the case is, there’s a lot of smoke hovering around the DJI rumor mill. Now the question is how much longer before the flames are found?

Unreleased Sony 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS FE lens prototype appears on auction website

Last month, a rumor surfaced that Sony has a new ‘wildlife/sports’ lens announcement scheduled for the first week of June. Following that leak, a new Sony 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS FE lens prototype appeared for sale on Yahoo! Japan’s auction website for 20,000 JPY ($ 185 USD). A number of images were included with the auction, which detailed the lens as ‘junk / for parts.’

The auction went live on June 1 and ended at a price of 31,500 JPY ($ 291 USD) on June 2. The prototype’s origins remain a mystery; the product was listed as slightly disassembled with ‘unconfirmed’ functionality. No box or accessories were included with the product, fueling speculation that the prototype was either stolen or found discarded.

The lens visibly contains Sony branding, as well as the model info stamped into the housing. The company hasn’t commented on the auction, which is still visible on Yahoo! Japan, but no longer open to bidding. It’s unclear whether the prototype was sold or the auction was cancelled. At this time, the lens doesn’t officially exist.

Instagram appears to be testing new video control feature

Nearly six years after launching video sharing on its platform, at appears Instagram is finally working on adding the ability to fast-forward through videos in your timeline.

Discovered by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, the new feature makes it possible to skim through videos in your timeline. Until now, videos in your timeline timeline would simply play from beginning to end and repeat themselves. Now, it’s possible to effectively fast-forward through videos with a little swipe of your finger, as seen in Wong’s GIF below:

It’s perplexing it’s taken this long for Instagram to implement an otherwise common feature, but that seems to be the ongoing theme for Instagram.

ZTE appears to be getting ready to launch smartphone with 32MP front camera

Smartphone front cameras used to be overshadowed by their counterparts on the rear of mobile devices, offering low pixel counts, fixed focus lenses and generally simple specs. This is changing quickly, however, with some front cameras on the latest high-end smartphones featuring high-resolution sensors, AF-systems, computational bokeh modes, HDR and other advanced functions.

It looks like ZTE is now about to take things to a new level by launching a smartphone with a 32MP front-facing camera. The new device, which is said to be the ZTE Blade V10, has emerged in a regulatory filing on China’s TENAA website and is thought to use Samsung’s ISOCELL GD1 sensor.

The latter comes with a 0.8 micron pixel pitch and pixel-binning technology, merging four adjacent pixels into one for better dynamic range and lower noise levels. The sensor also comes with real-time video HDR, so the ZTE could be a good option in difficult high-contrast scenes.

Other specs put the new model into the mid-range bracket of the market. There’ll be a 6.3-inch full-HD+ LCD display, an octa-core chipset and a 3,100mAh battery, according to the filings. The main camera comes with a 16MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor, likely for depth sensing.

Rare, original Marilyn Monroe contact sheet by Bert Stern appears on eBay for $195K

A new eBay listing is offering a 76 x 99.7cm / 30 x 39.25in contact sheet created by commercial photographer Bert Stern that features a dozen images of Norma Jeane Mortenson, more widely known as Marilyn Monroe. The mounted photo worksheet, which is described as being in excellent condition, was acquired by the New York-based seller rarepics914 from ‘an artist friend.’

The rare contact sheet features images captured during Stern’s ‘The Last Sitting’ portrait series, which was notably Monroe’s last photo shoot before she passed away due to a barbiturate overdose. Though the contact sheet shows some marks and minor wear from handling, it was kept safe for more than four decades in a storage facility, according to the seller, where it was protected from fading and damage.

The contact sheet is currently listed for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $ 195,000 USD. Interested potential buyers can also make an offer and request to arrange a private viewing with the seller. Seller rarepics914 has a 100% rating with 633 confirmed reviews.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F4 D II ED lens with rare grey color appears on eBay

A new eBay listing details a rare grey Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F4 D II ED lens in ‘very good’ condition with included case and accessories. According to the auction listing, the lens is fully functional with only ‘minimal to moderate’ signs of use on the barrel. ‘The glass is clean,’ according to the seller midwestphotoexchange, an authorized Nikon seller with a 99.8% positive rating with more than a thousand transactions. ‘The aperture blades are oil and corrosion free, and their action and control are snappy.’

The lens features the Nikon F mount and is compatible with all of the company’s SLR and DSLR models, though the seller warns it won’t meter on camera bodies made before 1977. The telephoto lens was manufactured in Japan at an unknown date and notably features a grey body overlaid with a prominent, bright red Nikon logo.

The lens is offered with a CT-502 hard case, HK-28 lens hood, both the front cover and rear cap, lens and case straps, and an extra drop-in filter holder. The seller, who will ship the item from Columbus, Ohio, is offering the lens bundle on eBay with the Buy it Now price of $ 3,995 USD, though the listing also allows interested buyers to make an offer on the item.

1959 Canon 45-200mm F2.8 (C35) ‘rarest’ prototype lens appears in eBay auction

An eBay listing is offering what the seller calls the ‘rarest prototype lens on Earth,’ a Canon 45-200mm F2.8 (C35) prototype lens. According to the listing, the lens was produced in Japan in 1959 and only “four or five” units were given to professionals for testing. Canon ultimately decided not to launch the lens commercially, possibly due to its heavy weight (approx. 3kg / 6.6lbs) and expensive price.

The seller goes on to claim that there are only two or ‘maybe three’ people in possession of these lenses globally. This particular unit, which is offered via auction with a starting price of $ 29,999 USD, is described as being in ‘Excellent+++’ condition for its age.

‘The lens was recently serviced, optics are cleaned,’ the campaign reads, ‘and [the] rear optic has minor sign on the coating in the corner, as it was properly cleaned from fungus and is missing [a] little coating.’ The product is said to be mechanically ‘perfect.’

The campaign references a 1959 Canon press release for the lens, but doesn’t provide a copy of it. Canon’s Lens Museum website doesn’t include any listing for this prototype, leaving only the seller’s claims. The seller has a 100% rating on more than 380 sales, but that doesn’t necessarily mean this listing is accurate.

The seller told DPReview the lens was acquired from ‘a very old studio’ that was torn down and sold off ‘a lot of stuff in auction.’ According to the seller, ‘some old movies were shot with the lens.’ DPReview is waiting to hear back with confirmation of what movies they were.

The auction includes the original metal lens storage box, front cap, filter, hood, focus knob and lens sliding attachment.

Google Clips smart camera will launch soon, appears in FCC documents

During its October 2017 event, Google surprised the camera world by introducing a small AI-powered lifelogging camera named Google Clips. And now, thanks to some uncovered FCC documents, it looks like we’re getting close to an official release date.

Google Clips is an interesting concept. Unlike other cameras that require a bit of input from the user, Google said Clips could analyze situations and automatically capture memorable moments, growing smarter over time—just place it on a shelf and it would ‘learn’ to capture your most important moments as they unfolded. Several months later, however, we still haven’t heard anything from Google about a release date. We know it’ll cost $ 250 USD when it launches, and the Google Clips product page offers prospective buyers the option to join a waitlist, but Google hasn’t revealed anything more.

That’s where the eagle-eyed folks at Variety come in. Earlier this week, they noticed that the camera recently passed through the FCC, indicating that a launch is imminent. In other words: if you’re holding out for the Google Clips, your wait is almost over.
