Final Cut Pro X 10.4.9 adds ProRes Raw camera setting adjustments, improved vertical editing and more

Apple has released its latest update to Final Cut Pro X, bringing with it a number of new features, including the ability to finally adjust ProRes Raw camera settings.

Although it’s listed under ‘Other new features,’ one of the most welcomed additions in the update is the ability to adjust ProRes Raw camera settings, such as ISO, color temperature and exposure compensation in the new controls within the inspector.

These new options address what was a big hole in the ProRes Raw workflow with FCPX. We asked our own Jordan Drake of DPReview TV for his thoughts on these new additions and he had the following to say:

’Working with ProRes Raw was initially jarring, as it did not respond like other photographic or cinematic raw formats. White balance and ISO were not directly adjustable, and attempting to use the built in tools to simulate those adjustments often led poor colors or noisy shadows. This new update allows adjustments to white balance, exposure and ISO and will hopefully allow ProRes Raw to behave more like R3D Raw, or Apple’s primary competition Blackmagic BRaw. Camera manufacturers aside from Blackmagic seem to be moving towards ProRes Raw, so this added functionality will be a big benefit for many current and future cameras.’

Also new is an improved proxy workflow with the ability to generate proxy media in custom frame sizes (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, or full resolution), the ability to create proxies in either ProRes Proxy or H.264 and the ability to create a proxy-only copy of a library to reduce the size of a project.

It’s now easier to compose footage for use in vertical-preferred platforms, such as Snapchat, Instagram TV, TikTok and others.

Apple has also added a number of new social media tools within FCPX, including automated project transformation for square of vertical delivery via the new ‘Smart Conform’ tool, the ability to view footage outside the viewer boundary for easier composing in non-traditional formats, as well as custom overlays for guides and a new ‘Duplicate Project As’ option that works with the new ‘Smart Conform’ tool to make creating videos for multiple platforms easier.

Hasselblad adds iPhone connectivity to its Phocus Mobile 2 application

Hasselblad has announced a major upgrade to its Phocus Mobile 2 application. The mobile app, which had previously only offered Apple iPad support, is now compatible with iPhone, making it an even better option for Hasselblad photographers on the go.

Phocus Mobile 2 offers photographers advanced remote control, live view, tethered image capture and importing, image conversion and exporting, image rating and filtering, and the ability to update the firmware of your camera and lenses directly in the app. On the iPad version, users can also edit their raw files and perform color correction. A video overview of a previous version of Phocus Mobile 2 can be seen below running on an iPad Pro.

In addition to offering Live View on the new Phocus Mobile 2 app for iPhone, the latest version of the app allows users to update the Hasselblad X1D II 50C, 907X Special Edition and 907X 50C to firmware 1.3.0, adding Live View functionality to these cameras in Phocus Mobile 2 on iPad. When remotely shooting, the app offers a newly designed focus wheel for remote manual focus control. Further, the app now includes focus peaking, simulated exposure, depth-of-field preview and improved AF area position control.

With respect to iPad models, Phocus Mobile 2 is compatible with iPad Air (2019 and newer) and iPad Pro (second generation and newer) models with a minimum of 3GB of RAM. On iPhone, Phocus Mobile 2 works on any iPhone model running iOS 12 or later. However, 100 percent magnification in the application requires an iPhone with at least 3GB of RAM (iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus and X models or later).

Blackmagic adds Windows support for BRAW 2.0 with DaVinci Resolve 16.3 update

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve 16.3 Beta 2, DaVinci Resolve 16.3 Studio Beta 2 and Blackmagic RAW 2.0 Beta 2. Together, these updates add support for viewing and editing Blackmagic RAW 2.0 footage on Windows computers.

Just last month, Blackmagic Design released the Blackmagic RAW 2.0 Beta 1, which added Blackmagic’s new fifth-generation color science, support for dual card recording and support for the new URSA Mini Pro 12K. In addition to general performance and stability improvements, this second beta also adds support for Blackmagic RAW 2.0 on Windows computers.

To accompany the Blackmagic RAW 2.0 update, Blackmagic has also released the second beta of its DaVinci Resolve 16.3 and DaVinci Resolve 16.3 Studio programs. For those unfamiliar, the non-Studio version of DaVinci Resolve is free to use, but limits project mastering and output to Ultra HD (UHD 4K) resolution or lower, and doesn’t offer additional support for multiple GPUs, advanced editing tools and more.

Olympus to ship 150-400mm F4.5 this winter, adds 8-25mm F4 Pro to lens roadmap

Olympus has released a little more detail about its upcoming 150-400mm F4.5 with built-in 1.25x teleconverter. The lens’ development was first announced in January 2019, and Olympus says it will arrive on the market in winter of 2020. A couple of images of the final lens have also been shared.

Additionally, two more M.Zuiko Pro lenses have been added to the roadmap: an ED 8-25mm F4 Pro and an ‘unspecified’ macro lens which appears around the 100mm equiv., focal length on the chart.

OM-D E-M1X owners can also look forward to a firmware update in winter 2020 adding bird detection to the camera’s Intelligent Subject Tracking Autofocus.

OLYMPUS UNVEILS UPDATED M.ZUIKO® DIGITAL LENS ROADMAP

Provides Updates on the Development of the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400 F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO Lens and Announces the Development of Firmware to Support Bird Subject Detection Autofocus for the OM-D® E-M1X

Center Valley, PA, July 2, 2020 – Olympus is pleased to announce an updated M.Zuiko Digital lens roadmap, outlining plans to expand the M.Zuiko lens lineup and including an update of anticipated availability of the previously announced M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO super telephoto zoom lens with built-in 1.25x teleconverter.

The upcoming M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO lens, for which development was announced in January 2019, continues with an estimated scheduled release of winter 2020. This is the first Olympus® interchangeable lens with a built-in 1.25x teleconverter, extending the maximum focal length to 1000mm1 (35mm equivalent). Final images of the lens are now available.

Two new lenses, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 8-25mm F4.0 PRO lens, as well as an unspecified macro lens, will join the M.Zuiko lineup as part of Olympus’ commitment to broaden the field of photographic expression. Olympus will continue enhancing its lens lineup to maximize the unrivaled system portability made possible by the compact, lightweight, high image quality of the Micro Four Thirds® System.

Furthermore, to make super telephoto shooting more convenient and to fulfill the growing needs of birding and wildlife photographers, development is underway to newly add Bird Detection capability to Olympus’ Intelligent Subject Detection Autofocus on the OM-D E-M1X camera. This new feature will be available for the E-M1X via a firmware update that is scheduled for release in Winter 2020.

Fujifilm adds Raw video output, gimbal support and Film Simulation modes to GFX100

Fujifilm has issued firmware updates to the GFX100 and GFX 50 models, with the 100MP camera gaining the most significant improvements.

The GFX100 will gain the ability to output a Raw video stream that can be encoded in Apple’s ProRes RAW format by an Atomos Ninja V recorder. This provides a much wider degree of processing latitude than the gamma-encoded, compressed files the camera saves internally.

In addition, the firmware expands the camera’s USB control protocol, giving more control over the camera’s settings when shooting tethered, and allowing remote control of various camera features when mounted on a drone or gimbal.

Face and eye detection AF is said to be improved, as is the performance of phase detection AF in low light. New focus bracketing options have also been added.

Finally, the GFX100 gains the Classic Neg and Eterna Bleach Bypass Film Simulations introduced since its launch.

GFX 50S and 50R users also gain Classic Neg, along with the original Eterna Film Simulation mode in an update to their cameras. This update also adds the subtle skin-smoothing feature from the GFX 100.

Apple adds more powerful GPU option to its 16″ MacBook Pro, new SSD option to Mac Pro Tower

Apple has released a new graphics option for the 16in version of its MacBook Pro which should deliver a dramatic increase in speed when dealing with large files. The AMD Radeon Pro 5600M is said to be a desktop-class GPU that comes with 8GB of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) that Apple claims will make the top-spec machine 75% faster than the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M standard option. The upgrade adds $ 700 / £700 to the cost.

The standard 16in MacBook Pro model comes with 1TB of SSD storage, but options of up to 8TB are available for an extra £2200/ which, along with all the other upgrades – 64GB of 2666MHz DDR4 memory and the 2.4GHz i9 processor with Turbo Boost to 5GHz – can take the price of the machine to a cool $ 6699 / £6699.

Mac Pro desktop users can also now buy user-changeable SSD kits for their Tower models, with 1TB, 2TGB, 4TB and 8TB options available. The kits come with two sticks each of half the total of the capacity and are designed to replace the existing storage in the machine. In order to replace them, Apple says a second Mac running Apple Configurator 2 is required. Prices for the SSD kits range from $ 600 / £600 for 1TB to $ 2800 / £2800 for 8TB.

GoPro releases GoPro Labs, a beta update that adds experimental features to your HERO8 Black

GoPro has announced the release of GoPro Labs, a new program that allows GoPro HERO8 Black owners to sign up as beta testers to test out experimental features that haven’t yet made their way into final products. In GoPro’s own words, ‘Think of GoPro Labs as an insider look at innovative features our top engineers are playing with.’

The first release of GoPro Labs includes a pair of features that were first developed via internal [hackathons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackathons: ReelSteady GO optimization and QR Codes for camera control.

Earlier this year, GoPro acquired ReelSteady, a team of FPV drone operators and visual effects experts that have developed some of the most advanced stabilization and image correction software out there for GoPro cameras. Nothing has come from the acquisition as of this time, but the ReelSteady GO optimization in the GoPro Labs firmware update will allow GoPro HERO8 Black owners to optimize the in-camera rolling shutter correction to better work with ReelSteady’s post-production software.

The QR Codes for camera control in the GoPro Labs firmware update is exactly what it sounds like. By creating custom QR codes with embedded commands, GoPro HERO8 Black owners can add new functions to their action cam without the need for Wi-Fi connectivity. Below are a few examples of features you can tweak via QR code:

  • Wake-up timer for remote start capture
  • Save favorite modes as a visual preset/QR code Motion detection start/stop — only capture video when something is happening
  • Speed detection start/stop — use GPS to determine your speed and automatically start capture at a defined speed
  • Camera scripting — e.g. shoot a time-lapse of a construction site but only during daylight hours (and many other detailed camera controls)
  • Personalize your GoPro with owner information Larger chapters for fewer files when taking long video captures — e.g. 4GB chapters will increase to 12GB.

GoPro has created and shared ten pre-built command QR codes with variables, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also create your own using GoPro’s list of action commands and settings commands. Additional support can be found on the GoPro Labs community within the GoPro forums.

To show off what’s capable with the new functionality, GoPro showed how the QR code camera control feature was used by GoPro Technical Fellow (and creator of the QR code feature), David Newman, worked alongside Northrup Grumman Corp. to capture the launch of a resupply mission to the International Space Station. Since the GoPro’s had to be set 72 hours in advance and not touched, he teamed up with his daughter to trigger each camera with a QR code before securing them to the launch pad. As the below video attests to, the results worked perfectly, despite none of the action cams having external power or displays.

GoPro says these features could one day be unveiled alongside a new camera, but also notes there’s a chance ‘these features may never make it to a camera release.’

Adobe updates Creative Cloud video and audio apps, adds GPU-accelerated encoding, ProRes RAW support and more

Adobe has released updates for a variety of its software products, including major updates to Adobe Premiere Pro. Adobe Premiere Pro version 14.2 includes GPU acceleration for encoding on Windows, promising export speeds up to five times faster than encoding performed using only the CPU.

For Nvidia and AMD GPUs which support hardware encoding, the new versions of Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, After Effects and Audition on Windows promise vastly improved performance when exporting files. Of the new update, Adobe senior engineering manager Manish Kulkarni says, ‘With new support for NVIDIA GPUs on Windows, exports are hardware accelerated leveraging the power of the GPU to make Premiere Pro more powerful and keep video creators productive and nimble.’

Adobe has also introduced ProRes RAW support in Premiere Pro and After Effects on Windows, a very welcomed change that’s been a long time coming. The graphics workflow in Premiere Pro has also been enhanced through the addition of an improved Pen tool with better support for Bezier curves. This will allow users to more easily create lines and shapes.

Further, in After Effects, motion graphics artists have new tapered shape strokes to use when creating animations and designs. There are also new repeating concentric shape parameters and Mask/Shape cursor indicators.

In addition to faster encoding through hardware acceleration on Windows, users can also expect faster Auto Reframe across all devices. Utilizing its artificial intelligence, Adobe Sensei, Auto Reframe now automatically reformats and repositions video across varying aspect ratios. Speaking of aspect ratios, Adobe Premiere Rush users will now be able to automatically resize projects to the 4:5 aspect ratio frequently used for Facebook and Instagram videos.

On the workflow side of things, Adobe has added support for audio files within Creative Cloud Libraries, which allows users to save, organize and share audio assets for easier access through the CC Libraries panel. For macOS users, automatic audio hardware switching has been added to After Effects, Media Encoder, Audition, Character Animator, Prelude, Premiere Pro and Premiere Rush. This means that when changing audio devices, Adobe applications will now automatically switch to the current hardware.

Improving software performance and stability is Adobe’s top priority. Alongside today’s updates, Adobe has published a new blog post outlining the various efforts the company and its engineers have made over the past year. Further, as many performance updates depend upon the user’s hardware, Adobe has also expanded its research into crash reports and how users are taking advantage of the company’s suite of software. Capture One releases Nikon-specific version, also adds improved clone and healing brushes

Earlier this month, Capture One teased a variety of new features in an upcoming free update to Capture One 20. Today, this free update has been released to all existing Capture One 20 users. Further, Capture One has released a new dedicated version of their software specifically for Nikon users, Capture One for Nikon.

The new Nikon version of Capture One follows the same pattern as existing Fujifilm and Sony versions, meaning that the software will only work with files from Nikon cameras. Profiles for each supported Nikon camera have been specifically built for Capture One by the software team in Denmark using an exhaustive lab-based process. Further, the Vivid, Neutral, Standard, Landscape and Monochrome profiles in Nikon’s cameras are supported, allowing Capture One for Nikon to match the colors you see on your camera.

The list of supported Nikon cameras is exhaustive and includes the company’s DSLR and mirrorless Z cameras. Many cameras also support tethered capture. You can view the full list of supported cameras and features by clicking here.

Returning to the newly-released update for all versions of Capture One 20, we were previously shown the new heal and clone brushes plus an improved before/after viewer. The revised healing and clone brushes now create dedicated healing and clone layers, respectively, and utilize more intelligent source point technology. You can also now utilize as many source points per layer as you desire with no discernible impact on performance.

With respect to the before/after view, users can now click a button in the toolbar to select from new before/after view modes. This is a much simpler and more streamlined process than in prior versions of Capture One and can be used across multiple images at varying zoom levels.

Another new feature that was not shown off during Capture One’s livestream in early May is an improved Lightroom Catalog Import tool. The tool now allows for importing files located on disconnected drives. Capture One will automatically import the files once the drive has been connected. Further, when importing a Lightroom catalog, some basic image adjustments and catalog structure can be imported into Capture One 20. The update to Capture One 20 is available now at no cost for all existing users. If you don’t own Capture One 20 and would like to try it, there is a free trial available on Capture One’s website.

Pixelmator Photo 1.2 update adds cursor support, ML Color Match, Split View and more

Pixelmator has released a 1.2 update for its powerful iPad photo editing app Pixelmator Photo that adds cursor support, an improved Split View mode, a Match Colors tool, a new copy/paste function and much more.

The update comes on the heels of Apple’s new iPad Pro models and accompany Magic Keyboards, which offer not only a tactile typing experience, but also an integrated trackpad that works alongside iPadOS 13.4 to bring mouse-like support to iPadOS apps. By adding support for the new cursor functionality, Pixelmator Photo adds yet another means of input for editing photos on the go (it works with third-party Bluetooth cursors and trackpads as well).

Also new is Split View support, which lets you use Pixelmator Photo alongside another app without interrupting your workflow, as well as a new ML Match Colors function, which allows you to ‘match the look and feel of one photo to another’ thanks to machine-learning. Pixelmator has also added a new intensity slider for color adjustments and presets and the ability to share images directly from the Photos browser within the app without opening each image individually.

Other improvements and fixes addressed in the 1.2 update include improved screenshot capture, new default color adjustment options, a collection of user interface changes and a handful of bug fixes to smooth out the overall experience.
