New Novoflex adapters let you use full-frame lenses with the Hasselblad X1D

Owners of the mirrorless medium format Hasselblad X1D will soon be able to mount a series of full-frame lenses to their medium format body, in some cases with minimal vignetting, thanks to a new range of adapters launched by Novoflex. The company has produced a set of adapters that allow you to mount Nikon F, Canon FD, Leica R, and Leica M lenses, as well as one for Hasselblad’s own V range of legacy optics, to the newer, sleeker X1D.

Novoflex says that many older lenses have such wide covering circles that vignetting will be marginal on the 43.8×32.9mm sensor of the X1D, and of course, tilt and shift lenses will cover comfortably.

The Nikon model features a mechanical iris lever so modern G lenses can be used, while adapters for Contax/Yashica and Minolta MD/MC will be introduced next month. The adapters cost between €139 and €229 (approx. $ 160-285 USD), and can be viewed and bought from the Novoflex website.

NOVOFLEX announces lens adapters for Hasselblad X1D – Greater lens variety formedium format cameras

The mirrorless medium format camera Hasselblad X1D is one of the most advanced cameras in the HighEnd sector. The sensor size of 43.8 mm x 32.9 mm with a resolution of 50 megapixel is the best choice for both – professional photographers and prosumers. The only disadvantage is that Hasselblad offers only a small number of lenses.

Since the firmware update 1.17.2, however, the camera incorporates an electronic shutter, allowing the use of lenses from other manufactures. That is why NOVOFLEX is now announcing a series of lens adapters allowing 35mm and medium format lenses to be used on the Hasselblad X1D camera. The first adapters are available now for Leica R-, Leica M-, Nikon F- as well as Hasselblad V-type lenses. The adapter for Nikon lenses comes with a built-in mechanical aperture control to also allow the use with G-type Nikkor lenses. Fading in and out can be done infinitely. The introduction of adapters for Canon FD, Contax/Yashica, Minolta MD/MC and for the universal bellows of the NOVOFLEX BALPRO series is planned for early April, 2018.

Especially interesting are the lens adapters for 35mm-format mount for tilt-/shift lenses, as their image circle is always big enough, to fully illuminate the larger sensor format of the X1D. However, many 35mm-format lenses have an image circle which is bigger than the actual 35mm-format itself, this results into only marginal vignettings. In additon, many old or classic 35mm-format lenses are based on lens calculations of large or medium format lenses. Potential vignetting could be used creatively or cases later corrected through software.

None of the adapters will transfer information between camera and lens

Fujifilm recalls nearly 300,000 camera power adapters due to ‘shock hazard’

Fujifilm has launched a massive power adapter recall that might affect a good number of readers. If you purchased a Fujifilm XP90, XP95, XP120, XP125, X-A3 or X-A10 camera from June 2016 onward, the wall plug that shipped with your unit might be at risk of cracking and/or breaking, “exposing live electrical contacts and posing a shock hazard” according to Fujifilm USA and the US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC).

The specific power adapter that is at risk is the AC-5VF, and according to Fujifilm, it was shipped with some XP90 and XP95 cameras sold from June of 2016, XP120 and XP125 cameras sold from January 2017, X-A3 cameras sold from October 2016, and X-A10 cameras sold from February 2017.

According to the CPSC, Fujifilm is recalling about 270,000 of these power adapters in the US, and another 24,000 in Canada.

As with most recalls of this type, not all cameras were affected. To check if your serial number is affected, grab your XP90, XP95, XP120, XP125, X-A3 or X-A10 camera and find the serial number as shown in the picture below:

To see if your camera shipped with one of the affected wall plugs, here’s where you’ll find your camera’s serial number to plug into Fuji’s Search Tool.

Then take that serial number and plug it into Fujifilm USA’s search tool at this link, or reach out to Fujifilm directly via email at productsafety@fujifilm.com or by toll-free number 1-833-613-1200.

If your camera doesn’t come up in the search tool, you’re safe to keep using the wall plug that came with it. If it does come up, you’ll need to contact Fujifilm via the email or phone number above, at which point they will “arrange to mail you a free replacement wall plug and associated adapter unit.”

Nine new lens adapters announced for the Fujifilm GFX

A host of new adapters have just been launched that allow owners of the Fujifilm GFX 50S to attach new and historic lenses from other brands to their mirrorless medium format camera.

K&F Concept has introduced eight of the adapters, and is offering completely manual mounts for some surprising brands, including Olympus OM. The K&F adapters are brass on both sides and have matte black interiors to prevent flare.

K&F Concept adapters:

  • KF-LRG: Leica R – Fujifilm G

Contax 645 users will be more interested in this adapter from Fringer, which allows full electronic contact between the Fujifilm GFX and Contax 645 lenses.

The extent of the communications provides autofocusing for 35mm f/3.5, 45mm f/2.8, 80mm f/2 and 140mm f/2.8 lenses, aperture control on all lenses through the camera body, and full EXIF information in the image file. Fringer admits ‘AF performance is not as good as native GF lenses!’ but some AF is usually better than no AF. The Fringer Contax 645 – GFX smart adapter costs $ 750.

Fotodiox’s DLX Stretch adapters feature a built-in extension tube for macro photography

Accessories manufacturer Fotodiox has launched a versatile new series of lens adapters for mirrorless camera users. The Fotodiox Pro DLX Stretch adapters not only allow you to mount off-brand lenses onto several major camera mounts, they also feature a built-in variable extension tube for macro shooting.

The DLX Stretch is a regular DLX lens adapter with one major difference: it features a barrel that turns to extend the distance between the lens and the sensor, endowing the set-up with the macro shooting capability of an extension tube. It isn’t clear how great the extension is for each of the adapters, but total distance will be dependent on the type of lens used.

The new adapters will be available for Sony E, Micro Four Thirds and Fujifilm X cameras and will come in a choice of 24 permutations to suit a collection of eight lens mounts—Canon EOS, Canon FD, Contax/Yashica, Leica R, Minolta MD, Nikon, Olympus Zuiko (OM), and Pentax K. If your particular lens mount doesn’t have an aperture control ring, the adapter will throw that in as well.

Finally, in conjunction with this adapter release, Fotodiox has also introduced a range of filters for the DLX Stretch that drop in to the rear of the barrel and stay in place using magnets. Three ND filters—an ND4, ND8 and ND16—come with the kit, and feature their own leather case.

Viltrox launches lens adapters for Sony E-Mount and Micro Four Thirds cameras

Hong Kong based manufacturer Viltrox has announced three new electronic lens adapters for Sony E mount and Micro Four Thirds cameras. The NF-E1 model lets you use Nikon Nikon F mount lenses on Sony E mount cameras. The EF-M1 and EF-M2 models let you connect Canon EF and EF-S lenses to your Micro Four Thirds camera.

The latter comes with with four optical elements in four groups. According to the manufacturer this design results in a, compared to the EF-M1, one stop faster aperture and a focal length multiplier of 0.71x.

All adapters are made of metal and come with a USB port for firmware updates and gold-plated electronic contacts. Autofocus and aperture-adjustment from the camera are supported and Viltrox says the EF-models are compatible with all Canon EF lenses. Pricing and retail information have not yet been released.

Mount your EOS lenses on the Fujifilm GFX with Cambo’s new adapters

Dutch accessory manufacturer Cambo has announced it is to produce an adapter to allow full-frame Canon EF lenses to work with the new Fujifilm GFX 50s medium-format camera. The CA-GFX sits between the camera body and the EOS lens and offers its own control dial for adjusting apertures. A small LCD displays the selected aperture but no EXIF data will be recorded by the camera.

Cambo says the adapter has been designed with the Canon T-SE tilt and shift lenses in mind as they have particularly wide covering circles which will fill the 43.8×32.9mm sensor of the GFX 50s. It isn’t clear whether other Canon lenses will cover the sensor to the same extent, but with some cropping of the edges of the frame most vignetting can be removed – with the loss of a certain number of pixels.

Earlier this month Cambo released a new ACTUS unit designed for the Fujifilm camera. The ACTUS-GFX is a bellows-and-non-rail unit that allows tilt, shift and swing movements in the front standards, as well as 27mm of vertical and 40mm of horizontal movement at the rear. The bellows unit accepts a range of medium and large format lenses via adapters. The ACTUS-GFX costs €2250 plus tax in Europe and $ 2795 in the US. No price has been released for the CA-GFX yet.

Cambo Lens Adapter for Fuji GFX50s

Cambo announces a new lens adapter to fit Canon lenses to the Fujifilm GFX50s.

The CA-GFX will be the third Canon lens adapter that Cambo have manufactured and marketed for camera movement. Having successfully adapted Canon lenses to the Cambo ACTUS (ACB-CA) and more recently the WIDE series camera (WRES-CA.) It was a natural transition to manufacture the adapter as it gives many photographers the option of using their existing lenses with the latest mirrorless, large sensor, Fujifilm GFX50s (CA-GFX.

Cambo CA-GFX Adapter
The CA-GFX adapter fits directly to the bayonet of the GFX camera body and the lens aperture is controlled electronically when dialling in the required f-stop. As there is no direct connection between lens and body, there is no data received; aperture, auto-focus or EXIF, from the lens.

Why make this lens adapter?
The Fujifilm GFX50s sensor measures 33x44mm and Canon lenses such as the 17mm T-SE and 24mm T-SE have very large image circles, they will cover the sensor size and will enable the photographer to apply movement.

Fotodiox Pro launches five GFX lens adapters

Fotodiox Pro has launched five new lens adapters for the forthcoming Fujifilm GFX medium-format system. This will allow lenses from other systems to be used with the GFX 50S, though as Fotodiox’s website points out, not every lens will give great results. All tilt-shift lenses and many full-frame lenses longer than 50mm will cover the GFX’s sensor, but anything wider will produce vignetting.

The new lineup features adapters for the Canon EF-Mount, Nikon F-Mount, Olympus OM-Mount, Mamiya 645, and Contax. The adapters are priced at $ 150 with the exception of the Mamiya 645, which is priced at $ 170.

The adapters are made entirely from metal with chrome-plated brass mounts and a ‘precise fit and solid connection.’ The company also says it uses ‘enhanced craftsmanship and high-tolerance construction for demanding professionals.’

Finally, Fotodiox cautions, ‘This is a manual adapter, so lens functions that rely on electronic communication with the camera body (autofocus, AE metering, image stabilization, etc.) will be disrupted.’ All five lens adapters are available from the company’s website now.

Kipon launches EF to Sony E adapters with built-in variable ND filter

Chinese lens and accessory maker Kipon has introduced an adapter that includes a variable neutral density filter, primarily for video shooters. The filter is placed between a Canon EF-S mount and a Sony E-mount body. The Kipon EF-S/E AF ND retains the autofocus and image stabilisation features of the lens, according to the company, and EXIF data is communicated so it can be recorded in the image files. The adapter also allows manual focusing of the lens to trigger MF assistance features of the camera – such as peaking or magnification.

Kipon has produced adapters that contain graduated neutral density filters before but this is the first that has a variable ND filter. The filter is turned via a wheel that sticks out of the barrel and is marked with values between 1.5 and 7 f-stops. The idea of the adapter is that wide apertures can be used with shutter speeds appropriate for shooting video – as well as for stills shooters who want a shallow depth of field outdoors on bright days.

The adapter features an EF-S mount, so that it can use both EF and EF-S lenses but covers the full frame image circle for use on a7 series cameras.

The company suggests that the selling price should be 45,000 yen before tax, which is approximately $ 430.

Metabones unlocks native Sony focus modes for Canon-mount adapters

Updated firmware allows Sony users to use all their AF modes when shooting Canon EF-mount lenses with Metabones adapters. It does so by emulating a native Sony lens, much like the recent Sigma MC-11 adapter. This update to the Metabones line of Smart Adapters and Speed Boosters enables the use of modes such as continuous Eye-AF and Direct Manual Focus. Updated firmware also brings smoother aperture control to most of Metabones’ adapters. And though the company doesn’t make any claims as to video focusing, if the adapters do truly emulate native E-mount lenses, we’d expect full phase-detect AF functionality during video.

The Metabones is only the second E-mount adapter to offer ‘native’ lens functionality with adapted lenses, with the Sigma being the first.* However, in practice the Sigma MC-11 has had many issues, too often reverting to contrast-detect AF off-center, and constantly hunting back and forth in minute increments in AF-C.

It’s not surprising, then, that Metabones lists a series of caveats and exceptions, most of which reflect the range and diversity of EF lenses that people might use. There are also warnings of increased battery usage and of poor continuous AF performance from lenses that aren’t designed to be driven in the pattern required for fast contrast-detection AF. Finally, Metabones mentions potential problems when shooting stopped down, undoubtedly a result of Sony’s ‘stop-down focusing’ that cripples the AF system if you shoot at smaller apertures by depriving the AF system of light, and literally shutting off phase-detection altogether at apertures smaller than F8.

Firmware for the latest adapters can be downloaded from the Metabones website. Owners of Mark I, II or III Smart Adapters and original Speed Boosters will need to return their adapters to the factory, where they will be updated free-of-charge. We’ll keep you apprised of actual performance once we’ve had an opportunity to try out the new firmware with a variety of lenses.

Vancouver, Canada, June 23, 2016: Metabones® releases Metabones App 2.3, a major firmware update with the following additional features.

  • Eye-AF (A6300/A7series).
  • Fast contrast detect AF for all E-Mount cameras.
  • DMF (direct manual focus) for E-Mount cameras, where the camera switches to MF as soon as AF completes. This is useful for checking AF accuracy when used with focus peaking.
  • Smooth iris for Sony E-Mount and FZ-Mount cameras and Blackmagic, JVC and Panasonic Micro Four Thirds Mount cameras.

Metabones® has already added fast EF lens autofocus to its Micro Four Thirds Mount Speed Boosters® and Smart Adapters™ last year. With this speedy advantage now extended to E-Mount, EF-Mount lenses are now capable of focusing quickly across the widest variety of mirrorless cameras with trusted Metabones precision and reliability.

The smooth iris feature slows down the movement of the electromagnetic aperture diaphragm so that video footage transitions smoothly when the aperture changes, with reduced tick noise from the lens. The latest Canon and Tamron SP lenses have special support for this feature and Metabones® makes use of it if the lens supports it.

Limitations:

  • E-Mount “native” autofocus features may not work with all lenses.
  • “Native” autofocus may be lesser in performance and/or accuracy compared to the original “Green” mode phase-detect autofocus for A6300, A7 Mark II and A7R Mark II.
  • AF-C and video autofocus may have unsatisfactory AF performance and/or accuracy. This is a limitation inherent in DSLR lenses, which lack the low latency required for making many fine movements in rapid succession during AF-C and video focusing.
  • Excessive hunting may occur if a small aperture is used with AF-C, video or “Liveview Display Setting Effect” turned on.
  • The first few autofocus attempts may result in false positives where the camera gives focus confirmation but the subject is not in focus. This issue goes away on its own after a few trials with most lenses.
  • No support for in-camera correction such as peripheral shading, CA and distortion.
  • Power consumption may increase compared to the original “Green” mode autofocus. We recommend turning off the “Pre-AF” option to conserve battery power. On A7 series cameras and A6300 the option is on page 3 under the “gear” tab.
  • Actuations of the electromagnetic aperture diaphragm and/or the focus motor of the lens result in noises which may be picked up by the camera’s internal microphone during video recording. Use of an appropriately placed external microphone is required for video work.
  • The aperture moves in 1/3 stop steps with most Panasonic cameras and 1/8 stop steps with other cameras, which may be noticeable in video recordings. Programmed exposure mode and shutter priority exposure mode should not be used for video. Lenses supporting “smooth iris” smooth out the transition but do not increase iris resolution.

Leica releases audio and S-lens adapters for SL mirrorless

Leica has announced the availability of a pair of adapters for its SL full frame mirrorless camera that will allow users to fit lenses from the S medium format system and to use microphones and headphones when shooting video. The Leica S-Adapter L opens the camera to 16 lenses from the S system including the company’s collection of leaf-shutter lens. While this doesn’t add any focal lengths that aren’t available via the existing SL zooms it will allow access to wider apertures for some and will also save existing S users having to buy extra lenses.

The new audio adapter uses the camera’s USB port and provides a pair of 3.5mm jack sockets for connecting a microphone and audio monitors for those shooting video with the SL.

The Leica S-Adapter L is available now and will be priced at £950, while the audio adapter AA-SCL4 will be on sale at the end of the month for £120. US pricing has yet to be announced.

– Leica S-Adapter L enables S-lenses to be used with the Leica SL
– Leica AA-SCL4 Audio Adapter available end of June

Leica Camera has today announced that the Leica S-Adapter L for the Leica SL mirrorless camera system is now available. This adapter further extends the range of lenses that can be used with the Leica SL to include those of the Leica S medium format camera system.

The S-Adapter L allows the use of 16 Leica S-Lenses with focal lengths from 24 to 180mm (including six central shutter lenses), in addition to the system’s own lenses, the Vario-Elmarit–SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. and the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4. The exceptionally fast S-Lenses are the result of more than 100 years of experience and expertise in optical design and precision engineering. Combining traditional Leica quality with cutting edge technology, they achieve uncompromising imaging quality in virtually all photographic situations, in the studio and on location.

Furthermore, the outstanding compatibility of the Leica SL-System grants photographers access to almost every Leica lens ever made. For example, Leica T lenses can be mounted on the Leica SL without an adapter, the M-Adapter T (already available) enables the use of almost all Leica M-Lenses with the Leica SL, while the R-Adapter L (available Q3/2016) will provide access to an entire range of Leica R-System lenses.

Leica AA-SCL4 Audio Adapter

Another new addition to the range of accessories and equipment for the Leica SL camera system is the AA-SCL4 Audio Adapter, which is scheduled to be available at the end of June 2016.

Pricing and availability

The Leica S-Adapter L is available now from Leica stores and authorised Leica dealers in the UK at a suggested retail price of £950 including VAT. The AA-SCL4 Audio Adapter, available at the end of June 2016, will have an SRP of £120 including VAT.
