Mount any Canon EF lens to Fujifilm’s GFX cameras with Metabones new EF-GFX Smart Expander adapters

Metabones has announced the release of the EF-GFX Smart Expander, a new adapter that makes it possible to use every Canon EF mount lens on Fujifilm GFX camera systems.

The adapter uses an optical design consisting of five elements in three groups to multiply the focal length and F-stop of Canon EF-mount lenses by 1.26x to match the image circle of EF lenses to Fujifilm’s GFX cameras while retaining the same diagonal field-of-view.

The EF-GFX Smart Expander offers electronic integration, including support for phase-detection autofocus (PDAF), in-body image stabilization (IBIS), optical image stabilization on stabilized lenses and smooth iris on lenses that support it. The adapter features a physical toggle that can switch between auto aperture (for use with Program and shutter priority shooting modes) and manual aperture (for use with aperture priority or manual exposure). If an entirely manual lens is attached, the button will bring up the manual lens selection option on the GFX camera system being used so you can manually enter the focal length to account for IBIS operation and EXIF data.

As you would expect for such an all-encompassing adapter, there are some limitations in place. Below are a number of issues Metabones is aware of as of the initial release of the adapter:

  • In some rare cases lens hoods designed for 3:2 may need to be removed for 4:3 use with Smart Expander.
  • Each lens needs to go through a calibration procedure when first used. Refer to the online user manual on Metabones’ web site for instructions.
  • Autofocus may have unsatisfactory performance and may not work at all with some lenses
  • For video autofocus, increasing FOCUS SENSITIVITY and decreasing AF SPEED are required under the AF-C CUSTOM SETTING (MOVIE) menu.
  • AF+MF and lens aberration correction are not supported.
  • Some film-era lenses may not be able to achieve the sufficient AF accuracy required for digital cameras. Worn lenses with faulty sensors may lead to AF problems on a mirrorless camera even though the lens may appear to function normally on a DSLR.
  • Aperture diaphragm makes frequent noises with older lenses. Use aperture priority and manual exposure modes, or use a lens which supports smooth iris.
  • With IS/OS/VC lenses the IS MODE setting is ignored and both SHOOTING ONLY and CONTINUOUS modes behave in the same way which is similar to a Canon camera but different from what Fujifilm OIS lenses do. This is done to maximize IS effectiveness. A negative consequence of this is that there may be no OIS during focus check.
  • MF Distance Display does not work (although AF Distance Display does if the lens transmits distance information).

Metabones has included a Micro USB port on the adapter so future firmware updates, some of which may address the above issues, can be installed via its macOS and Windows Metabones app.

Sigma releases slew of minor firmware updates for its lenses, mount adapters

Sigma has unveiled a number of firmware updates for its lenses and adapters to improve features and address various issues.

Specifically, Sigma has published firmware updates for its 45mm F2.8 DG DN for Sony E-mount, 100–400mm F5–6.3 DG OS HSM for Canon EF-mount, some of its Sigma SA-mount lenses and its MC-11 SA-E/EF-E mount converter.

The Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN for Sony E-mount has received firmware version ’02,’ that Sigma says corrects an issue wherein blur can occur when using the lens with Sony’s in-body image stabilization. You can download firmware version ’02’ for macOS and Windows computers on Sigma’s support page.

The Sigma 100–400mm F5–6.3 DG OS HSM for Canon EF-mount has received firmware version ‘2.06,’ which ‘[optimizes] the operation of Mode 2 in Optical Stabilizer when used in combination with the SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-21 EF-L.’ It’s not a major update, particularly if you don’t use the MC-21 adapter, but even if you aren’t experiencing the issue, it’s still a good practice to keep your firmware fresh. The updated firmware is available within Sigma’s Optimization Pro program, which works alongside its USB Dock to upgrade the in-lens firmware.

Sigma has also released firmware updates for a number of its SA-mount lenses. The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG HSM now has ‘reduced the aperture drive noise’ when used with the MC-21 SA-L adatper, while the Sigma 14–24mm F2.8 DG HSM has improved autofocus when used with the MC-21 SA-L adapter.

Both the Sigma 100–400mm F5–6.3 DG OS HSM and 500mm F4 DG OS HSM lenses for Sigma SA-mount have also received an update that optimizes ‘the operation of Mode 2 in Optical Stabilizer’ when used with the MC-21 SA-L adapter. All of these updates can be downloaded through Sigma’s Optimization Pro program, which is available for macOS and Windows computers.

Lastly, Sigma has released a firmware update for its MC-11 SA-E and EF-E converters. The updates, which can be installed via Sigma’s Optimization Pro program, adds support for the aforementioned lenses in their respective mounts.

Kipon releases two Mamiya 645 to Sony E mount adapters with electronic aperture control

Photography accessory manufacturer Kipon is now shipping two new adapters for mounting medium format lenses to Sony E mount camera systems.

The adapters come in two varieties: the M645-S/E E, which adapts Mamiya brand Mamiya 645 mount lenses to Sony E mount cameras while the M645-S/E ES adapters Phase One or Schneider brand Mamiya 645 lenses to Sony E mount cameras.

The two adapters are constructed of aluminum and brass, offer an infinity focus feature, and offer electronic aperture control through the camera. A previous Mamiya 645 to Sony E mount adapter has been available for some time, but it doesn’t offer the electronic contacts for aperture control and features a less pleasing design.

The M645-S/E E and M645-S/E ES are available to purchase for $ 289 and $ 389, respectively. Shipping dates vary depending on your geographical location.

Select Metabones adapters can now shoot up to 10 fps AF-C on Sony a7 III cameras

In 2017, Metabones released a firmware update for its EF-E Speed Booster and EF-E Smart Adapter lines that added a 10 fps maximum continuous autofocus (AF-C) frame rate to the Sony A9. In an announcement today, the company revealed it’s brought that same functionality to the Sony a7 III model.

The latest update brings 10 fps AF-C to the a7 III via firmware version 62 for the EF-E Speed Booster Ultra I and II, EF-E CINE Speed Booster Ultra, EF-E CINE Smart Adapter and the EF-E Smart Adapter IV and V. These products can be updated over USB with firmware version 62 available to download in the Metabones app.

Metabones explains the 10 fps in the ‘Advanced Mode’ is the theoretical maximum, with both subject movement and the lens AF speed both impacting the actual shooting speed. The company recommends users set the in-camera ‘Priority Set in AF-C’ to ‘AF’ for the best accuracy and hit rate, but warns that it will come with a decrease in frame rate.

The company says older adapter models can be updated to firmware version 62, as well, including the original EF-E Smart Adapter I and II launched in 2012 and the EF-E Speed Booster launched in 2013. These older models don’t feature USB ports, however, so customers will require factory service to get the upgrade. As well, these models will only work in APS-C mode.

Metabones® Firmware Pushes A7 Mark III Maximum AF-C Frame Rate up to 10 fps

Vancouver, Canada, June 24, 2019 – Two years ago, Metabones® added support for Sony A9 with a maximum continuous autofocus (AF-C) frame rate of 10 fps by firmware to its EF-E Speed Booster® and EF-E Smart Adapter™ lines of fully-electronic adapters. Today, the same feat is extended to A7 Mark III.

How to upgrade:

  • EF-E Speed Booster ULTRA I/II, EF-E CINE Speed Booster ULTRA, EF-E Smart Adapter IV/V and EF-E CINE Smart Adapter are equipped with USB ports and they can be upgraded to firmware v62 by downloading the latest Metabones App. Choose the “Advanced Mode” checkbox before clicking the “Update” button. To encourage new firmware adoption, the user is assured that the upgrade is reversible to any previous version released in the last 2 years.
  • New customers may set the adapter to “Advanced Mode” with Metabones App or by following the procedure in the online user manual.
  • Even the original EF-E Smart Adapter I/II from 2012 and the original EF-E Speed Booster from 2013 can be updated to v62 and benefit from 10 fps AF-C with A9 and A7 Mark III, but without any USB ports, factory service is required to upgrade the firmware of these discontinued products, and they work only in APS-C mode. EF-E Smart Adapter III (2013) can also be factory-serviced to v62 and is the earliest adapter with full-frame camera support. Please contact Metabones customer service for details.

To achieve the highest possible AF-C frame rate on A7 Mark III, the adapter is set to “Advanced Mode”. On the camera we recommend setting “Priority Set in AF-C” to “AF” for the best accuracy and the highest hit rate, even though that will decrease the frame rate. 10 fps is the theoretical maximum and just how close we get to that is highly dependent upon the AF speed of the lens used and the speed of subject movement.

The fastest frame rate is achieved when the subject is at or near the center where phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) is used. Unfortunately only the central PDAF points are effective, because using all of the PDAF points of the camera would have required metadata about the optical formula of the specific lens used, which we do not have. All the PDAF points can be used by setting the Speed Booster or Smart Adapter to “Green Mode”, although the periphery points will still not be as effective as the central ones.

Some older lenses may have reduced accuracy and/or speed in “Advanced Mode”, but they can still be used in “Green Mode” on A7 Mark III at a lower frame rate (3 fps). “Green Mode” is also faster at single autofocus (AF-S).

With Speed Boosters and Smart Adapters breaking down compatibility barriers, Metabones believes that the products themselves need to be continuously updated with new firmware to cope with new technologies, new cameras and new lenses. Sigma announces pricing, availability of its MC-21 SA- and EF- L-mount adapters

Earlier this month, at CP+, DPReview got its hands on the Sigma MC-21 adapters, a pair of adapters that allow either Sigma’s SA- or Canon EF-mount lenses to be used on L-mount cameras. At the time we weren’t given details on pricing or availability, but today that changes. Sigma has announced the Sigma MC-21 SA-L and EF-L adapters will be available starting April 2019 for a cost of $ 169 USD and $ 249 USD, respectively.

As we were told at CP+, the SA-L and EF-L adapters can be used with 29 existing Sigma lenses, including 23 full-frame lenses and 6 APS-C lenses from the Global Vision lineup. This brings the total number of supported L-mount lenses to 40, including the 11 DG Art primes and and native L-mount lenses.

Sigma also confirms that data pre-loaded on the MC-21 adapters ensures autofocus and aperture control have been optimized for the supported lenses and says future lenses will hold the required data in the lens itself, meaning no firmware updates will be needed. The MC-21 adapters also support EXIF data transfer and various in-camera correction functions including chromatic aberration, peripheral illumination, magnification and distortion.

Additional features include an integrated tripod socket for mounting larger lenses without tripod support and an internal flocking that’s used to reduce internal reflections.

On the Foveon front, Sigma notes it ‘will aim to [eventually] replace its SA-mount lenses with the native L-mount versions, but until then, Foveon shooters can rely on the existing offering of Sigma MC-21 at a lower price point to ease the transition to the new system.’

If you own a Nikon Z camera and still have a bunch of older lenses from other brands sitting around, K&F Concept’s new line of Nikon Z lens adapters, which will start shipping on January 22, could be worth a look. They could give your old lenses a new lease on life.

In total ten different Z-mount adapters will be available:

Gear Review – Fikaz Sony E-Mount Lens Adapters

Not too many years ago, in a sad and dark time, there weren’t many ways for us adventurous types to branch out in ways we used our photography gear. Namely, our camera lenses weren’t easily usable across platforms. It was possible, but adapters and converters weren’t plentiful or easy to find.

Today, mirrorless, full-frame, and crop-sensor cameras are essentially pairable with many lenses. Adapters for these lenses are relatively easy to find too. So much so, that there is an over-saturation of the lens conversion market making most lens mount adapters affordable for any budget.

Unfortunately, not all lens adapters are created equal. So when Fikaz, a company I had never heard of, approached me to test out some of their new Sony E-Mount (NEX) adapters, I was open-minded but still cautious of yet another lens adapter-maker.

Luckily, all of my reservations about the Fikaz Sony E-Mount lens adapters were unfounded. As it turns out, the two adapters I received were pleasantly high-quality pieces of kit. Let me explain to you what I thought about these nifty little adapters from one of the newest kids on the lens converter block.

As I said, the lens adapter world is a hot commodity right now and being able to use your lenses (especially manual vintage lenses) is currently in vogue. The two adapters I evaluated were the Nikon F (G) to Sony E-Mount and M42 to Sony E-Mount. Both adapters were high quality in both aesthetics and their build.

Nikon F (G) Adapter

Until their recent leap into the full-frame mirrorless realm, and since the late 1950s, all of Nikon’s lens mounts have been variations of the “F” mount. So technically, virtually all Nikon lenses should be compatible with a Nikon F-mount adapter.

The caveat is that later “G” series lenses (read as modern) don’t sport a physical aperture ring on the lens itself. This missing aperture ring means that while the lens is physically shootable with most F-mount lens adapters, there is nowhere for the photographer to change the aperture. A dedicated G-mount adapter comes in handy because the shooter can use the aperture ring on the adapter to physically control the amount of light entering the camera via the lens.

The Nikon F (G) adapter is solidly built and feels extremely substantial in the hand. The aperture controller ring is a nicely contrasting silver against the black frame of the adapter.

The Nikon F (G) adapter was tested using my relatively ancient Nikkor 70-300mm F/4-5.6 lens. Both the lens and camera sides of the adapter fit extremely snug…but not too snug…to the lens bayonet and the camera mount. Absolutely no play or movement was observed.

A well placed and crisply-springy release slider is also present on the adapter which is, again, in the visually pleasing contrasting silver tone. Fikaz has also included a highly visible red bead for easy mating of both the lens and camera with the adapter.

From what I would approximate, the aperture ring, or rather more accurately, the “aperture approximator” ring works in full stop increments with six stops of adjustment. Basing my lens at 70mm and F/4, the apertures provided from the adapter should be approximately F/4, F/5.6, F/8, and so on. The adapter has a visual representation to aid you in selecting aperture size.

M42 Adapter

I had intended to test the Fikaz M42 to Sony E-mount adapter using a fan-favorite lens, the Helios 44-2. Unfortunately, I realized far too late that my Helios was not in my bag. Seeing as I’m currently 3,000 miles from my test lens, this portion of the review shows my impressions of the build and appearance of the M42 adapter only. Which I must say, is extremely impressive for its price tag.

The M42 adapter from Fikaz is incredibly Spartan in its appearance. The majority of the converter is mostly flat black with accenting bare aluminum areas which cut an understated yet classical form. Like the Nikon adapter, the markings are well executed and quite clean. The threads on the M42 side are very uniform and smooth with no burrs or metal shavings present.

This same level of craftsmanship also holds through for the Sony bayonet end of the adapter which shows no flaws in the cutting or finish of the mount. The perimeter of the M42 adapter sports deep cut serrations offering a superb grip even with gloved hands.

Final Thoughts on the Fikaz Sony E-mount Adapters for Nikon F(G) and M42

In the grand scope of things, both the construction quality and thoughtfulness of design displayed with Fikaz’s first entries into the world of mirrorless adapters impressed me. Hopefully, both the build and looks of the adapters hint at great things to come too.

The Nikon F (G) adapter worked extremely well to allow a large measure of aperture control with newer Nikon lenses and mated perfectly to my 70-300mm test lens. However, I wasn’t able to test the M42 mount with a lens, the build and precision left little doubt that it would also perform well.

That said, there are some things to keep in mind about the M42 (and any other non-AF adapters). Essentially, all that is needed is a mount conversion. There is no real need for the relatively large size of the adapter which can affect infinity focus. While the M42 adapter has an excellent build, it may be beneficial to search for a slimmer “ring” adapter if you are worried about focusing issues.

On that note, the Fikaz adapters both feature black paint on their interior but no flocking to eliminate possible reflections. This shouldn’t be a problem, but maybe a concern for those seeking complete security for lengthy exposures.

Currently, the Fikaz Sony E-mount adapters are available for the following lens mounts: Nikon F (G), M42, Pentax K, and Fuji X mount. I have been informed that Canon EF mount will be available in the future. At the time this review, these adapters have a selling price of around US$ 24, making them a bargain. There are plenty of choices for lens adapters and converters today. Some are high quality and others, well, not so much.

I feel as if Fikaz can now join the ranks of some of the better budget adapters currently on the market. A bonus for those who are looking at a cost-effective way to use their lenses across a wide range of camera systems.

First lens adapters for Nikon Z already appearing

British photographic engineer MTF Services is claiming to have created the world’s first third-party lens adapters for the new Nikon Z system, with a collection of four units designed to allow cinema lenses to be mounted on the mirrorless full frame bodies. The adapters are made with stainless steel and HE30 aluminum, and feature a toe support with steel helicoil 1/4″ threads.

The lenses the adapters are aimed at are PL, Panavision, B4 and Arri bayonet, so they are intended to appeal to filmmakers and broadcasters. The adapters come pre-shimmed, and spare shims will be included.

The PL to Nikon Z version is available to order on the company’s site for £350 + VAT (approx $ 460), and the other models are expected to follow soon. For more information see the MTF Services Lens Adapter website.

Three EF-to-RF adapters available for EOS R

Alongside the new RF lens mount, Canon has announced a trio of RF-to-EF adapters for owners of current Canon DSLR lenses. There’s a basic adapter, another with a customizable control wheel and a third with support for drop-in filters. The Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R are compatible with both EF and EF-S lenses.

Video: Testing all the Nikon F to Sony E-mount AF adapters on the market

Photographer Matt Granger has taken to YouTube to share a useful little gear video for those people who want to use Nikon F glass on their Sony E mount camera. In the video, he tests out all of the current Nikon F to Sony E-mount autofocus adapter on the market.

The video compares three adapters in all—the models available from Commlite, Vello, and Fotodiox Pro—which cost $ 400, $ 400, and $ 350, respectively. To test the gear, Granger tries them out on four lenses in turn: the Nikon 85mm F/1.4G, Nikon 200mm F/2G ED VR II, Nikon 24-70mm F/2.8G ED and the always-trusty 70-200mm F/2.8 ED VR II.

Although unconfirmed, Granger also shares a little tidbit of information from an unnamed source who told him that all of these adapters are effectively made with the same internals, as there’s only one company that’s managed to reverse-engineer Nikon’s tricky lens coding system.

Interestingly enough, this claim seems to be substantiated by the fact that all three adapters are absolutely identical, down to the cutouts, caps, desiccant and screw locations. The only difference is the location of markings on the devices and the fact that the Fotodiox adapter features gold metal mounting plates and gold release buttons, whereas the other two feature silver mounting plates and black release buttons.

We’ll leave it to Granger to break down every detail of the three adapters in the video up top, but we can summarize his experiences by saying that each adapter seemed to have strengths and weaknesses depending on which lens it was being used with.

In the end, Granger says it’s ultimately up to you to decide which one best fits your needs based on price and the location of each company’s respective support services. He also notes that, while each of the adapters do work in environments where your subject isn’t moving much, don’t expect to shoot a football game with one of them—the speed just isn’t there. Still, the adapters left Granger impressed.
