Sarah Moon: A Master Speaks

10 Jun

“How can one live without hope and longing?”
-Sarah Moon

Sara Moon and her work have always been a big inspiration for me. Her work is soulful, it’s work that obviously comes from a very deep and emotional person because it provokes the viewer in a deep and meaningful way. Her work is pure. I’m sure she has never had her work in photoshop, ever. I love that about it. It’s grainy, soft focused, blurry at times and utterly flawless. I recently found this video and 5 seconds in, I was hooked. To hear one of the great masters of fashion photography speak her mind about the art and the craft is a gift. And so I listened and learned. I replayed one section over a few times. It was so beautiful, the way she described her process of shooting fashion. It reminded me of my own process, my own desire to capture a moment, an instant where everything makes sense to me and the line between reality and delusion is blurred. I believe magic resides on that line, and magic is what I as a photographer, try to create. I want to seduce my viewers and please my audience with visual pleasure. The section I am speaking of is where she talks about how she has the model in front of her but she’s not “seeing” the shot. So she waits. The model becomes discouraged. She take a few photographs to appease the model but still, nothing. She begins to panic, telling herself she doesn’t want to be a photographer anymore ( I can’t tell you how many times I say this to myself and others. You’d be surprised, probably). But then something changes! Maybe, she says, I’m at the right place at the right time. Or maybe it’s because she starts to believe in it. But for a split second she sees a sparkle of beauty passing by and then everything goes so quickly within that stillness and she’s carried away….at last she likes what she is seeing and she can’t stop finding it and then losing it. All day long she keeps on, because it once existed.

And that is absolutely the process for me of taking photographs. Chasing something I see that lasted a second. A moment of grace. A moment of beauty. Sometimes it can never be recaptured.Sometimes it’s gone, disappeared, never to return. But I’ll tell you what….. I’m going to die trying.

Google Chrome – Google’s Own Screen Capture Tool Supports Full Page Capture, Editing, and Sharing

07 Jun

Take screen captures of entire web pages viewed in Google Chrome, then add highlights to focus on important elements and share the captures via Facebook.

Looking to capture screenshots while browsing the web in Google Chrome, and want to print and share them with friends and coworkers? While many screen capture extensions exist, you may wish to consider Google’s own Screen Capture tool.

Features include visible web tab or freeform region capture, plus the ability on many pages to capture the entire page with the screen capture tool handling horizontal and vertical scrolling (the author tested this on a couple of pages with good results – your mileage may vary with especially large pages)….

Hanging Rock by Moonlight – Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park

05 Jun

There are few things that pique the curiosity of night sky watchers more than the moon. Even my son at 10 months old started to point out the moon. If you see it enough it seems anything but special, but the moon is amazing. It’s an amazing sight to witness and an amazing subject to photograph. One thing that amazes photographers the most is that the full moon gives off so much light.

Overhanging Rock by Moonlight – Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park

The moon is one gigantic reflector in the sky. The moon reflects ~1/7th of the sun’s light back to Earth, so with the right exposure (~7x’s longer than normal) you can get an image that looks nearly indistinguishable from a daytime photo. If you’re walking at night under a full moon you might not think that much light is there to see, but on the contrary once your eyes adapt it can look incredibly bright. The moon is pretty cool all around so be sure to take the time to appreciate it on your next night walk or night photo shoot. The experience will more than likely awaken a primal curiosity no different in experience than our caveman relatives might have felt.

[MODIFIED] Digital Night Photography – Reduce Camera Shake with Special Lens

04 Jun

A special lens may help you take better night photos by reducing ‘camera-shake’.

Obviously a tripod or other stabilizing device makes taking digital photographs at nighttime much easier. With a stabile digital camera you can take longer exposures that make up for the reduced lighting, and these photos should not suffer from the dreaded “camera shake”. The built-in or a shoe mount flash can also help in some situations.

However, there are times where your subject is too far away and too large to be affected by flash. Perhaps you are shooting panoramic photos on top of a skyscraper, and your flash unit is simply not going to illuminate buildings miles away. Or, you may be taking photos in an urban environment and tripods may be bulky or simply not allowed. …

Take a photo every day in 2009
I went along to the Birmingham City University School of Art Bournville show today, I was lucky to have one of the students guide me around the work which is very enlightening. Once you know what the contextual thought process is behind a piece it certainly aides the enjoyment of the visit to the show. This piece at first looked like a pile of cardboard boxes and then you notice a sparkling light and inside … well see the next picture 170-365 part 2
